  • No. 8 Montrose girls soccer uses big first half to beat Grand Junction Central

    (Photo: Heather Jennings)

MONTROSE — Eighth-ranked Montrose girls soccer is now 5-0 this season following a 3-0 win over Grand Junction Central on Saturday.

“We played a totally solid game, especially having come off a two week period with no games,” Montrose coach Cassie Snyder said. “Our possession was consistently strong and we had a lot of opportunities to score. We are getting better all the time and plan to continue to grow and improve.”

Montrose jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half when Euraylie Cantu scored off an assist Shayla Geesing, and Joise Coulter scored from an assist by Olivia Haga.

Tate Dunnagan scored in the second half on an assist from Coulter to give Montrose the 3-0 win.

“Montrose was well organized and physical,” Central coach Jason Clare said. “We needed to match it and we fell short. … I think Montrose was better in the first half and we were better in the second half, but chasing the game is always difficult and we rushed things in the final third.”

Montrose plays at Palisade on Monday. Central (1-2) plays at Coal Ridge on Tuesday.

  • Grand Junction Central names Brandon Milholland its new football coach

Grand Junction Central has turned to an alum to be its next football coach.

The Warriors announced that Brandon Milholland, formerly of Cedaredge, has been hired to head their program. Milholland replaces Shawn Marsh, who was hired at Eaglecrest last month.

Milholland has been the head coach at Cedaredge since 2010, going 53-39. He led the Bruins to a state title in 2012, winning Class 1A.

He graduated from Central in 1998, where he was an all-state quarterback. After graduating from college, Milholland returned to Central as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach at Cedaredge.

At Grand Junction Central, Milholland will take over a program that went 7-4 last season and made the 4A playoffs.

  • Eaglecrest names Grand Junction Central’s Shawn Marsh its new football coach

    Cherry Creek Eaglecrest football
    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Shawn Marsh, a veteran of creating successful football programs on the Western Slope, has been named the head football coach at Eaglecrest.

Marsh spent the past six seasons as the head coach at Grand Junction Central

Eaglecrest announced the hire on Friday morning, and Grand Junction Central also announced Marsh’s resignation.

“We are excited to welcome Shawn Marsh to Eaglecrest High School,” Raptors athletic director Vince Orlando said in a statement. “Coach Marsh is a great fit for our school and community. We are confident that he will provide outstanding leadership for our young men and lead our program to continued success in the coming years.”

Marsh was 24-38 in six seasons leading the Warriors, primarily in Class 4A, though they were 3A in 2014 and 2015. He took over a team that went 0-10 the year prior to he was hired, and built them into a program that was 7-4 last season, and made the postseason. His team also made the playoffs in 2016, the program’s first winning season since 2004.

Prior to joining Central, Marsh was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Division II Colorado Mesa University. He has also been a head coach for 15 seasons, including stints at Paonia (1995), Fruita Monument (2010) and Grand Junction (2001-07). He led the Tigers to a runner-up finish in the 4A title game in 2005.

“I want to thank Eaglecrest High School and the Cherry Creek School District for the opportunity to coach football in such an amazing high school an school district,” Marsh said in a statement. “My family and I are excited to be part of the Eaglecrest family and community.”

At Eaglecrest, Marsh will take over one of 5A’s top programs. The Raptors, runner-up in 2017, have reached at least the quarterfinals each of the past three seasons — one of six 5A teams to do so.

After Dustin Delaney resigned early in the 2018 season, Eaglecrest was led by Garrett Looney on an interim basis last fall.
