No. 4 Pomona football shuts out Lakewood in Jeffco League opener
LAKEWOOD — In a shortened prep football season with a 6-game regular season and eight teams qualifying for the postseason there is no room for error.
“We just have to keep plowing ahead,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said after the Panthers’ Class 5A Jeffco League opener Thursday night at Jeffco Stadium. “Every week is like a playoff game because you never know where you are going to be at the end of the year.”

Pomona senior AJ Zamora (5) tries to bring down Lakewood quarterback Max Schadler during the first quarter Thursday at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Pomona — No. 4 in the CHSAANow.com football rankings — took care of business against Lakewood on Thursday night. The Panthers rolled to a 42-0 victory. It was the second straight shutout win for Pomona, who defeated Chaparral 35-0 last week.
“Our defense is really looking good this year,” Pomona senior linebacker AJ Zamora said.
Pomona’s defense was impressive allowing just one Lakewood first down on the Tigers’ first six drives of the first half. Pomona junior Dante Kirklin intercepted Lakewood quarterback Max Schadler in the third quarter that set up Zamora’s 2-yard touchdown run that pushed Pomona’s lead to 42-0.
“I thought the kids really flew around tonight,” Madden said of his defense. “If they play that fast they are fun to watch.”
Pomona senior Jack Pospisil was also fun to watch. One of the top wide receivers in the state now turned quarterback for Pomona rushed for touchdowns of 50 and 7 yards, along with throwing a 43-yard touchdown pass to junior Isaiah Alvarez to open up a 21-0 lead in the first half.
“That was actually the first touchdown pass I’ve ever thrown in a game,” said Pospisil of his touchdown pass to Alvarez.

Pomona senior quarterback Jack Pospisil ran for a pair of first half touchdowns in the Panthers’ victory over Lakewood at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Pospisil has rushed for six touchdowns on the season to give a different dimension to the Panthers’ offense.
“He (Pospisil) has a great arm,” Madden said. “He just runs the show. He keeps the other team off balance because they need to think about him every single play. When he gets in the clear he isn’t going to get caught.”
Seniors Ian Dexter, Ben Cruz and Zamora all had touchdowns runs to help Pomona (2-0 record, 1-0 in league) induce a running clock with a 42-0 lead with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter.
“We have really been focusing and practicing hard,” Pospisil said. “Everyone is super into it this year. Everyone is playing for the team and not themselves.”
Pomona continues conference play with the Panthers hosting rival and No. 5 Ralston Valley (2-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the North Area Athletic Complex. The Mustangs took a 21-3 league win over Mullen on Thursday night in their conference opener at NAAC.
“We are super excited,” Zamora said of facing Ralston Valley, who has won its last two meeting against the Panthers. “Two years in a row we have lost to them. We are going to come out, hit them in the mouth and take away their run game.”
Lakewood’s competition doesn’t get any easier. The Tigers (0-2, 0-1) face No. 2 Columbine next Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.
“Our road is not easy. Our league is not easy,” Lakewood coach Jeff Braun said about facing last year’s state runner-up. “I just want my kids to come back and compete.”

Chatfield and Dakota Ridge grab team titles at 5A Jeffco League XC Championships
ARVADA — Pomona sophomore Emma Stutzman added to her growing resume Friday afternoon during the Class 5A Jeffco League Cross Country Championships.
Stutzman easily cruised to the girls individual title with a time of 18 minutes, 57.7 seconds on the grounds of the Standley Lake Basketball Barn near Stoney Creek Golf Course in north Arvada.

Chatfield freshman Reese Tucker helped the Chargers bring home the 5A Jeffco League girls team title. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “It means a lot because last year I came in third and blew the finish a little bit,” said Stutzman, who broke the school cross country record at Pomona earlier this season. “It feels really good to be able to win this one.”
The sophomore didn’t mind the several surface changes and uneven ground of the new course that hosted the 4A Jeffco League championships the day before.
“It was good. It’s a nice course. It was kind of lonely, but you just got to work with you got,” said Stutzman, who’s time was nearly 40 seconds faster that second-place. “It hits home a little bit. I train a lot in the mountains. It was nice to have a similar surface and not have a concrete course.”
Chatfield grabbed the team title with 55 points. Freshmen Reese Tucker (2nd) and Aspen Webb (4th) led the Chargers to the team victory.
Now it’s onto regionals next week. Stutzman and the Panthers will head to Monarch High School for the 5A Region 3 meet on Thursday, Oct. 8.
“It’s definitely to win regionals,” Stutzman said of her goal next week.

Dakota Ridge senior Jacob White is alone as he nears the finish-line during the 5A Jeffco League XC Championships on Friday. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) On the boys side, Dakota Ridge senior Jacob White continued his winning ways. The three-time state placer grabbed his first individual conference title with a time of 15:52.1.
“I just ran,” said White, who was all by himself for the majority of the race defeating the rest of the field by nearly a minute. “I feel ready for regionals.”
Dakota Ridge grabbed it third straight 5A Jeffco team title with four runners — White, Ethan Straub, Chance Heisler and Silas Thompson — all finishing in the Top-10. Ralston Valley boys finished second with seniors James Ramey (2nd) and Jack Donze (4th) leading the way for the Mustangs.
White is looking forward the facing some tough competition at the 5A Region 1 meet Friday, Oct. 9, at Clement Park. Mountain Vista senior Harrison Witt will give White a good gage of where he is at heading into state.
“It will be so much fun. I can’t wait for next week,” White said. “It will truly be something.”

Boys golf: Breaking down each state tournament heading into Monday’s start

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com) State championship season rolls on as the boys golf tournaments are set to begin play on Monday. The Class 5A tournament will take place at Rolling Hills in Lakewood, the 4A tournament will be played at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs and the 3A tournament is at Dos Rios in Gunnison.
Each classification has several standout teams as well as multiple teams that can battle for a team state championship. Below is breakdown of what to expect at each tournament when the boys start launching them Monday morning.

Class 5A

(Brad Cochi/For CHSAANow.com) Course: Rolling Hills Golf Course in Lakewood
2019 individual champion: Will Kates (Arapahoe)
2019 team champion: Fairview
Weather forecast: Sunny, temperatures in high 70’s (both days)
Outlook: The 5A tournament might have some of the best talent the state has on display. Cherry Creek sophomore Charlie Flaxbeard and teammate TJ Hicks both shot career rounds at regionals and will take a lot of momentum into state. Combined with the veteran presences that players like Kates and teammate Matthew Wilkinson bring and it could make for a fun two-day battle at Rolling Hills. The team race between Cherry Creek, Arapahoe, Lakewood and Ralston Valley should also be fun to track.
Others to watch: Ralston Valley’s Gage Messingham is the top-ranked 5A player according to iWanamker rankings, Lakewood’s Ryan Liao has finished in the top four in the last two years of the 5A tournament and Prairie View’s Jeff Nelson has put together some of the best rounds in the state during the course of the regular season.

Class 4A

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) Course: Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs
2019 individual champion: Micah Stangebye (Montrose)
2019 team champion: Montrose
Weather forecast: Sunny, temperatures in mid-to-high 70’s (both days)
Outlook: After winning the last three team championships, Montrose is going to have its work cut out for it this year. Micah Stangebye is gone but Jordan Jennings has done a great job of leading the team as a senior. The individual race should be an intriguing one as Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford and Northfield’s Hunter Swanson return after tying for second place. Lewis-Palmer’s Greg Lewis was right there as a sophomore and has only gotten better in the last year. The team race could come down to host Cheyenne Mountain battling it out with the likes of Mullen, Pueblo West and Windsor.
Others to watchk: Falcon’s Reese Knox has been on fire lately as has Coronado’s Noah Keller. Frederick’s Jake Chesler has been steady all year and Durango junior Levi Tichi has found himself under par on several occasions.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com) Class 3A
Course: Dos Rios Country Club in Gunnison
2019 individual champion: Westin Pals (Lutheran)
2019 team champion: Lutheran
Weather forecast: Sunny, temperatures in low 70’s (both days)
Outlook: The 3A tournament certainly brings the most collective talent from the widest range across the state. Aspen’s Nic Pevny finished with in a three-way tie for third with Kent Denver’s Jeffrey Zhou and Stering’s Tayleb Schaefer at the end of last year’s tournament. All three competitors are back which means the second day of the tournament could look more like a men’s club Friday night shootout than a final round of stroke play. Aspen, Kent Denver, St. Mary’s, Sterling and Vail Christian will all have a shot to make a run at a team title and it could be the results on the first day that could put either of those teams in the driver seat.
Others to watchk: Montezuma-Cortez’s Thayer Plewe has more poise on a golf course as a sophomore than most men have in their 30’s. He’s looking to keep his hand steady and play his way into contention. Primero’s Lance Peters has shown no fear when feeling the need to pull driver out of his bag. The narrow fairways of Dos Rios might give some players pause before going for the big dog, but if Peters has a spot in mind and needs driver to get there, he’ll waste no time swinging away.
