  • Football postseason preview: 5A, 4A and 3A first round games

    The state football playoffs are underway this week. Each bracket consists of eight teams with quarterfinals taking place this week before semifinals are played next week, ahead of the state championship games, all of which will be played at Colorado State University Pueblo.

    With four games in all seven classifications, here is a breakdown of this week’s big-school matchups:

    Class 5A

    (8) Regis Jesuit at (1) Cherry Creek

    Date and time: Nov. 20, 4 p.m.

    Breakdown: There has been no slowing down for Cherry Creek (6-0) since the Bruins claimed the 5A title last December. They haven’t been shy about putting up points and have only surrendered 28 total points all year. Quarterback Julian Hammond has thrown for 1,027 yards and 17 touchdowns while James Walker II has rushed for 566 yards and four touchdowns.

    Regis Jesuit (5-1) has put together some impressive wins this season but fell to Legend, the only playoff team on its schedule. The Raiders have been paced all year by senior running back David Dody. Through the course of the season, he has rushed for 514 yards and nine touchdowns.

    (5) Eaglecrest at (4) Pomona

    Date and time: Nov. 20, 5 p.m.

    Breakdown: As has been tradition in recent years, Pomona (6-0) has taken care of business this season. The Panthers won a key battle with Columbine to end the regular season and officially punch their ticket to the postseason. A big reason for that is Jack Pospisil. The senior has rushed for 593 yards and 10 touchdowns this year.

    A Week 1 shootout made a lot of people pay attention to Eaglecrest’s (4-1) offensive potential. The Raptors got solid games from JP Luketu (547 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns) and anything can happen when quarterback Khalil Howard finds wide receiver Ty Robinson.

    (7) Cherokee Trail at (2) Valor Christian

    Date and time: Nov. 19, 6 p.m.

    Breakdown: Under first-year head coach Donnie Yantis, Valor Christian (5-0) is looking to return to the state title game for the first time in two years. To get there, they’ll rely on Gavin Sawchuk, who has rushed for 993 yards and 16 touchdowns.

    After dropping the first two games of the year, Cherokee Trail (4-2) battled its way into the 5A field. Quarterback Jayden Lavigne has been a big reason for those four straight wins as he’s totaled 1,287 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.

    (6) Fairview at (3) Legend

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 2:30 p.m.

    Breakdown: In the first four games of the season, Legend surrendered just seven total points to its opponents. The Titans are looking strong heading into the postseason thanks in large part to the running game of Connor Eise (798 yards, eight touchdowns) and the complementary passing attack of Kalen Shoemaker (890 yards, 14 touchdowns).

    After finding its footing through the first two games of the year, Fairview found its rhythm offensively. The Knights scored at least 42 points in each of their last four games of the year. Liam O’Brien threw for a staggering 310 yards per game and 18 total scores to just one interception.

    Class 4A

    (8) Montrose at (1) Dakota Ridge

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 3 p.m.

    Breakdown: Dakota Ridge (6-0) meant business from the second the first whistle blew to start the season. The Eagles outscored their first three opponents 155-26 and haven’t looked back since. Ben Gultig is completing 69 percent of his passes and has totaled 920 yards and 14 touchdowns.

    A tough schedule put Montrose (4-2) right on the bubble, but they’ll have a chance to pull off a major shocker on Saturday. The team showed it can play with the best in 4A after leading Palmer Ridge at halftime of their game back on Oct. 30.

    (5) Broomfield at (4) Loveland

    Date and time: Nov. 20, 6:30 p.m.

    Breakdown: A hard fought victory over Skyline last week kept Loveland (6-0) undefeated on the year and more importantly, battle tested heading into the postseason. Zack Rakowsky leads Loveland with 860 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

    After getting to last year’s state title game, Broomfield (5-0) has every intention of making a return trip. Sophomore Cole Lacrue has shown poise at the quarterback position while throwing for 841 yards and nine touchdowns. As a team, the Eagles have forced a staggering 16 takeaways.

    (7) Pine Creek at (2) Palmer Ridge

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.

    Breakdown: Arguably the most anticipated matchup of the week sees two teams who both claimed state titles last year. Palmer Ridge (4-0) won the 3A title while Pine Creek enters the postseason as the defending 4A champ. Luke McAllister has paced the Bears offensively with 1,070 passing yards and 16 touchdowns.

    Playing a full 5A schedule should make Pine Creek (2-2) battle tested heading into the tournament. Beau Freyler and Zion Hill have rushed for a combined 555 yards and four touchdowns this year.

    (6) Fountain-Fort Carson at (3) Ponderosa

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 10:30 a.m.

    Breakdown: A strong showing in the regular season saw Ponderosa (6-0) go undefeated. That included a thrilling last-minute win over Montrose on Nov. 6. Quarterback Jack Hanenburg has shown strong leadership all year as well as solid play. He has thrown for 1,078 yards and 11 touchdowns this year.

    Fountain-Fort Carson (5-1) got rare regular season retribution to end the year by knocking off Rampart, the very team that handed FFC its lone loss of the season just a week earlier. Q. Jones is in the conversation for 4A player of the year as he averages over 232 rushing yards per game and has scored 16 rushing touchdowns this season.

    Class 3A

    (8) Fort Morgan at (1) Roosevelt

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.

    Breakdown: Since beating Mead 21-20 in overtime on Oct. 16, Roosevelt (5-0) has been the clear No. 1 in the 3A field. Brig Hartson is the catalyst of the team’s offense as he’s thrown for 838 yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 204 yards and two scores.

    With just one loss in the regular season, Fort Morgan (4-1) is looking to pull off a major upset in the quarterfinals. Briggs Wheatley has thrown for 563 yards and rushed for 417 and will need to pace the Mustangs in their bid to shake up the 3A field.

    (5) Mead at (4) Pueblo South

    Date and time: N/A

    Breakdown: COVID-19 concerns prompted Mead (5-2) to withdraw from the game. Pueblo South (5-0) wins via forfeit and advances to the semifinals.

    (7) Evergreen at (2) Holy Family

    Date and time: Nov. 20, 6 p.m.

    Breakdown: If there is one thing Holy Family (6-0) likes to do, it’s score points. The Tigers cross the 30-point mark in all but one of their games this season. Michael White and Trevin Johnson give the offense a bit of balance as White has thrown for 903 yards while Johnson has rushed for 786.

    Losses to Palisade and Durango got Evergreen (4-2) off to a 2-2 start, but the Cougars finished strong to earn a postseason berth. They’ll have to rely on Noah Martens (871 rushing yards, three touchdowns) to control the time of possession and keep Holy Family off the field.

    (6) Lutheran at (3) Durango

    Date and time: Nov. 21, 1 p.m.

    Breakdown: An undefeated regular season has given Durango (5-0) confidence that it can claim its first state football title since 1954. Jordan Woolverton has a cool command of the Demons offense, throwing for 629 yards and six touchdowns while adding five rushing touchdowns.

    The lone loss of the year for Lutheran (4-1) came in the regular season finale against Holy Family. The Lions are hoping that a steady passing attack from Clayton Jacobs (1,082 yards, 13 touchdowns) will be too much for Durango to hang with.

    Legend football beat Pine Creek 21-20 in a key matchup that featured top-10 teams from 5A and 4A.

    PARKER — By all accounts, Pine Creek’s second-half rally should have been enough to at least force overtime. But after scoring a touchdown to cut Legend’s lead to one point, it all came down to the extra point attempt.

    With the wind howling all day accounting for the gust became a factor as Jackson Issac’s kick veered right to give Class 5A No. 7 Legend a narrow 21-20 win over 4A No. 3 Pine Creek.

    “We want to give Pine Creek a lot of credit,” Legend coach Monte Thelen said. “They were all the opponent that we thought they’d be.”

    That may not have appeared to be the case in the first half as the Titans (5-0 overall, 4-0 5A/4A Southern League) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

    Kalen Shoemaker tossed touchdown passes to Carter Helfrich and Jackson Brush to build the lead and give Legend what turned out to be a much-needed cushion in the first half.

    The biggest momentum shift in that span came as a botched Eagles (2-1, 2-1) toss send a squad of Titans after the ball and Caleb Bouldin came up with it. It wasn’t long after that Shoemaker found Brush. Points off turnovers is certainly one way to beat a Pine Creek team that has been a state powerhouse for the better part of the last decade.

    “There’s no better feeling than that,” Bouldin said. “Knowing that you changed the tide of the game and made that big of a play, it feels great.”

    Pine Creek made crucial adjustments in the second half which resulted in points on the board and a big swing of momentum. The Eagles were facing fourth down, going with the wind, and opted for a fake punt to generate some offense. It paid off and not long after, Josiah Roy found Beau Freyler for a 20-yard touchdown pass.

    Roy found paydirt again later in the quarter, finding William Kea for a 13-yard touchdown pass. A once promising 14-point lead for Legend had been completely erased, but the Titans never allowed themselves to panic.

    “We had to keep trucking, keep going and keep grinding,” Shoemaker said. “It was nothing new to us.”

    The only problem is that the Legend offense wasn’t getting as many chances to keep trucking. The Titans ran all of three plays in the entire third quarter, three runs to Connor Eise, and couldn’t generate any of the progress that was frequently made in the first half.

    They needed just one big play and got it when Shoemaker found Brush for a 40-yard touchdown pass, his third of the game, with 9 minutes left in regulation.

    “I was kind of hoping and praying it would happen, but not expecting it to,” Shoemaker said. “I was expecting to put together a drive and put it in (that way).”

    With newfound rhythm of their own, the Eagles were able to put together a methodical march down the field and Roy broke into the end zone on a one-yard run. That’s when Issac’s extra point missed.

    The Eagles couldn’t recover the onside kick and a few solid runs from Eise put the game out of reach, but not before Pine Creek showed its ability to hang with a top-notch 5A team.

    “It means a lot,” Shoemaker said. “They’re the defending champs in 4A and they’re usually a powerhouse. Coming out here and getting to play them actually gave us the first taste of blood in a regular season game.”

  • All-state girls cross country teams for the 2020 season

    The win was led by seniors Kalen Shoemaker and Connor Eise, who each had two touchdowns: Shoemaker with one throwing and one rushing, and Eise with two on the ground.

    Legend is now off to a 3-0 start for the second consecutive season, and the win marked a program first for the Titans, who had yet to beat Regis Jesuit. The schools met each of the past two seasons.

    Five minutes in, Legend took a 7-0 lead when Eise snuck in on the left side from 1-yard out.

    Then early in the second quarter, on third down, Shoemaker rolled to his right and threw back left, finding Carter Helfrich on a 10-yard score that made it 14-0.

    A few minutes after that, Shoemaker dashed 90 yards on the ground to make it 21-0.

    Regis scored just before halftime to cut the lead to 21-7 when Dervin Taylor scored up the middle from 10 yards out.

    Legend added a 25-yard field goal from Caden Smith, and it was 24-7.

    In the fourth, Eise capped the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown.

    6-man: (1) Fleming 32, (5) Prairie 8

    Scoreless at halftime, and a one-score game after three quarters, Fleming broke things open to come up with a major top-5 win on Friday night.

    “We did some things well, and there’s some things we definitely have to work on, but I guess we did enough well,” Fleming coach John King told the Scoreboard Show.

    A defensive struggle through the first two quarters, Fleming scored two touchdowns in the first minute of the third quarter to go up 16-0.

    “We finally kind of settled down and started executing better offensively, and then really had all the momentum in the world,” King said. “The next two possessions in a row, we turned the ball over. We could have really taken the game over, but we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot and let them hang around.”

    Prairie scored two minutes after that, making it 16-8 heading to the final frame.

    Fleming scored on the third play of that fourth quarter, pushing their lead to 24-8, and added a final score with 4:31 to play on fourth down.

    “It was a really nice battle for us,” King said. “We had some kids who are starting for us the first time this year.”

    2A: (3) Sterling 31, (5) Platte Valley 21

    Kaeden Sheets threw four touchdowns as Sterling held off a rally from Platte Valley to win the top-5 battle.

    Sheets’ big night started off with three first-quarter touchdowns, two to Tucker Myers, as the Tigers built an 18-0 lead.

    Sterling’s lead grew to 24-7 with 6:12 to play in the third quarter when Sheets found Jackson Keil from 6 yards out.

    Platte Valley rallied. McDaniel had a 2-yard run with 4:35 left in the third, and two minutes after that, McDaniel hit Lauer for a 12-yard score to make it 24-21.

    In the fourth quarter, Peyton Rose sealed the game with an 8-yard run.

    A week after dropping a tough game to Roosevelt in OT, No. 5 Mead rebounded in a big way with a win over No. 6 Fort Morgan.

    “It was a fun night to be a part of Mead,” Mead coach Jason Klatt told the Scoreboard Show.

    • In double overtime, Windsor beat Erie 38-32. “Different players stepped up at different times and made big plays,” Windsor coach Chris Jones told the Scoreboard Show. “It was a wonderful team effort on defense.” The Wizards are now 3-0.
    • 8-man No. 1 Sedgwick County won its 20th consecutive game, the longest streak in the state, with a 60-14 win over No. 10 Haxtun.
    • In their first game of 2020 following a two-week quarantine, 4A No. 3 Pine Creek beat 5A Chaparral 17-7.
    • In the annual Whistle Game, 2A No. 4 Lamar beat rival La Junta 43-14 after building a 28-0 lead. “We started out pretty fast. We were able to grab some pretty big chunks there,” coach Jason Tice told the Scoreboard Show.
    • 3A No. 4 Lutheran was impressive in a top-10 game for the second consecutive week, this time beating No. 7 Palisade 54-24.
    • After moving up to No. 1 this week, Roosevelt beat Thompson Valley 42-0 in 3A.
    • In 5A, Douglas County beat Doherty 27-24 on a last-second field goal.
