Regis Jesuit girls basketball, winner of the last two Class 5A titles, heads the classification’s preseason poll.

The Raiders received 11 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, which was released Monday. They also had 139 overall points, edging preseason No. 2 Broomfield (130).

Regis hasn’t lost to an in-state team since dropping a game to ThunderRidge in Feb. 2013. That’s a span of 28 consecutive wins against Colorado teams. The school is also 42-1 against in-state teams since the start of the 2012-13 season.

Broomfield lost in last season’s 4A title game, and is making the move to 5A this season.

Grandview is No. 3, and No. 4 Highlands Ranch and No. 5 Fossil Ridge round out the top 5.

Also ranked in the preseason are No. 6 Lakewood, No. 7 Cherry Creek, No. 8 Rampart, No. 9 Horizon and No. 10 ThunderRidge.

In 4A, Valor Christian is the preseason No. 1. Pueblo South is No. 2, and defending champion Mesa Ridge is No. 3. Holy Family, winner of last year’s 3A title which has moved up to 4A, is No. 7.

Sterling leads 3A’s preseason poll. Pagosa Springs, last season’s runner-up, is No. 2.

Yuma is the favorite in 2A. It was runner-up last season to Lutheran, which opens as No. 3.

Briggsdale heads the 1A ranking. Defending champion Norwood is No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Shining Mountain’s Ginger Hutton goes all in for cross country

Ginger Hutton of Shining Mountain Waldorf can’t stop running.

After nabbing all-state cross country honors as a junior and placing sixth at the 2013 Class 2A state championship, she spent part of her summer competing at the track and field Junior Olympics in Texas, where she placed sixth in the 800-meter run and seventh in the 1500-meter run.

If Hutton seems born to run, perhaps it’s because it’s in her genes. While initially hesitant to go out for cross country, Hutton credits her sister Birdie, who holds a number of Shining Mountain Waldorf records in track and field, for guiding her into the sport as an uncertain freshman.

“My sister Birdie is an awesome runner and a great role model. When I was going into high school, she was always trying to get me out to run, and finally at the start of track season my freshman year I agreed,” said Hutton. “Thus I will never forget that season of falling in love with running, and running one and two at state (track and field meet) in the mile with her.”

Despite being an excellent overall athlete who competes in the high jump and has played other varsity sports, this fall Hutton is cutting down her schedule to focus strictly on cross country. And after training most of the summer for track and field, she might be in an even better position to compete — which doesn’t bode well for other runners looking to catch her.

“I’ve only run one cross country season during which I also played varsity volleyball, so up until now I concentrated more on the track season,” said Hutton. “This fall I will be focused solely on cross country and we will see how my late track season (training and racing) rolls over.”

As one of just two returning members of the 2A all-state squad from a year ago, Hutton has high expectations for the upcoming season.

Shining Mountain Waldorf returns a number of excellent runners from last year’s group that placed sixth at the 2A state championship, names Hutton is quick to bring up when discussing her team’s expectations for 2014.

“I’m hoping that our team wins state,” said Hutton. “I feel that we have a very strong girl’s team (with) Paisley Sheehan, Ella Baca (and) Inaya Shore for cross country and I am excited to see how the season plays out.”

  • George Washington’s Hall breaks 100 hurdles record at 5A girls track

LAKEWOOD — George Washington’s Dior Hall has been a national phenom in the 100-meter hurdles for many years, but accomplished something Saturday that no one in Colorado history had at the State Track and Field Championships.

She ran a 13.09 100-hurdles in the Class 5A finals, smashing the 1996 all-classification record of 13.23 held by Denver South’s Dominique Calloway. The time was the third fastest in U.S. history for a high school girl.

Perhaps the most amazing thing is that Hall’s 13.09 wasn’t even a personal best. The senior holds the national record in the event with a 13.01, a time she ran to win silver at the World Youth Championships last summer. At a March meet in New York, Hall set the 60-meter hurdles national record with a time of 8.11.

On Saturday, Hall put on a show in the first event of the final day of State at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. Her competition was Cherry Creek’s super sophomore Ashley Miller, already one of the fastest Colorado girls hurdlers in history herself.

From the gun, Hall and Miller took control but the George Washington star’s speed and picturesque form cruised her past the field to the near sub-13 performance. Miller placed second in the fourth-fastest time in state history, 13.38.

“I just wanted to complete my race plan,” Hall said of her preparation for the final. “Going into finals I wanted to run 12.9, but I ran 13.09. It’s pretty good.”

Hall, who has mostly focused on the 100 hurdles and the Patriots’ always blistering relay squads during high school, displayed versatility senior year.

“I split a 54 on the sprint medley (relay),” Hall said. “It was my first event of the year. I was actually not supposed to run as fast as I did, but I felt like someone was behind me, so I felt like I had to go faster. I was really happy with a 54.”

Hall’s performance was enough to help George Washington become the first Colorado sprint medley relay team to break 1:43. They own the all-classification record with a 1:42.98, the top time in America when they ran it.

The Patriots chose not to stack the relay at State, but Hall was certainly busy Saturday. Less than an hour after her 100 hurdle performance, she placed second in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.69, a new personal record. Pine Creek’s Ally Watt claimed the 5A crown in a time of 11.53.

Hall also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 24.26 seconds. Watt won the double with a blistering 23.73.

Hall even ran a leg on George Washington’s second place 400-meter relay (47.13). Pine Creek claimed the title in 46.55, a mere .04 seconds off the Colorado record of 46.51, which GW set in 2007.

Hall’s impressive weekend helped the Patriots place fifth in the 5A girls team standings with 51 points. Fort Collins won the state championship with 84 points, four points ahead of Pine Creek.

Elise Cranny-led Niwot won its second straight 4A championship with 66 points. Thompson Valley finished second with 57.5 and Broomfield was third with 55 points.

The Classical Academy won its third consecutive team title in 3A with a dominating 111-point tally. Eaton was second with 82.5 points.

In 2A, Paonia held off a game Hotchkiss 102-86 to claim back-to-back team crowns.

Jennifer Celis did her best to give Hotchkiss a chance at victory with 30 individual points in the 400 (57.84), 800 (2:11.43), and 1,600 (4:58.55) by herself. She also anchored the state championship 1600-meter relay in a time of 3:59.78.

    Hotchkiss' Jennifer Celis. (Brock Laue)
    Hotchkiss’ Jennifer Celis. (Brock Laue)

Celis broke her own 2A records in the 800 and 1,600. She closed with a scorching fast kick in both races to beat West Grand’s Tabor Scholl. Celis’ 800-meter race was especially impressive.

“The past few years I would take it on pace and then slow up to make sure I had enough for the kick,” Celis said of her 800-meter state championship. “This year I really just wanted to run my own race. I knew I wanted to break 2:13 this year, but for that race I kind of just wanted to run it to win it and hopefully the time would come.”

One event later, Celis won the 400-meter dash despite admittedly tired legs.

The Hotchkiss star might be a 2A athlete, but will be competing for a big-time college program next season — Oklahoma State University — after winning six individual state titles and three relay titles in her career.

In 1A, Shining Mountain Waldorf won an exciting battle for the State Championship with 74 points. Heritage Christian (71), Dove Creek (68), and Vail Christian (65) were all in the mix late into the weekend.

On a day filled with spectacular performances, Hall’s 100-hurdle state championship run stood out. The senior exudes humility and class, but is honest about her long-term goals.

“To make the Olympics in 2016, win, and break the world record,” Hall said of her ultimate dream.

The George Washington star seems capable of anything after a breathtaking Saturday morning at Jeffco Stadium.

  • Denver East narrowly holds onto top spot in 5A boys basketball ranking

With one week to go in the regular season, Fossil Ridge nearly overtook Denver East atop the Class 5A basketball rankings.

    Nearly.

The SaberCats remained in the No. 2 spot despite the fact that both schools received 10 first-place votes. Denver East, though, held on to its top ranking by one overall point.

The Angels have been No. 1 all season, save for one week in mid-January when Fossil Ridge led the poll.

Mountain Vista stayed put at No. 3 this week, and continued to be followed by No. 4 Regis Jesuit and No. 5 Eaglecrest.

Overland bumped up on place to No. 6, while Highlands Ranch went from No. 10 to No. 7 after going 2-0 last week.

Arapahoe dropped two spots to No. 8, Rangeview is the poll’s lone newcomer at No. 9, and Grand Junction rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The Centennial and Continental leagues both have three teams in the top-10 this week. The Denver Prep, Front Range and East Metro and Southwestern all have one ranked team.

Elsewhere, the 1A poll has a new No. 1 team. Hi-Plains took over for Caliche after receiving eight of the 11 first-place votes in that class. Hi-Plains went 3-0 last week, while Caliche went 1-2, though both losses were to ranked 2A teams.

That ranking added No. 9 Cheraw and No. 10 Briggsdale.

Jefferson Academy moved up to No. 3 in 3A this week. (Pam Wagner)

The No. 1 teams in 4A (Valor Christian), 3A (Holy Family) and 2A (Ignacio) stayed the same this week.

The 4A poll added No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 10 Denver West. 3A added No. 7 Denver Science & Tech and No. 10 Platte Valley.

Holyoke (No. 9) and Meeker (No. 10) were the new teams in the 2A ranking this week.

As the regular season ends for all classes this week, these will be the final rankings of the season.

  • 5A boys basketball ranking adds Grand Junction at No. 9

Grand Junction started the 2013-14 campaign 7-0. The Tigers then lost two straight just prior to the winter break. However, since that break, GJ is 9-0.

This week, the Tigers cracked the top-10. They are ranked No. 9 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll.

Elsewhere in 5A, Denver East extended its stay at No. 1. Fossil Ridge remained at No. 2, and Mountain Vista at No. 3.

Regis Jesuit moved back up to the No. 4 spot after a 2-0 week. Eaglecrest dropped one place, and rounds out the top 5.

Arapahoe is sixth, Overland is seventh and Chatfield is eighth. Highlands Ranch rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The 4A poll added Golden at No. 10. Other newcomers included No. 8 Centauri in 3A, No. 10 Denver Christian in 2A and No. 8 Shining Mountain in 1A.

Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A), Ignacio (2A) and Caliche (1A) held firm atop their respective polls.
