5A boys basketball: ThunderRidge tops George Washington to end 19-year title drought
COLORADO SPRINGS — For nearly 20 years, ThunderRidge has been trying to get back to the top of the mountain. The Grizzlies have had their chances, even coming painstakingly close on one of them.
The fifth attempt turned out to be the charm as they knocked off George Washington 68-59 to claim the Class 5A boys basketball championship at the Broadmoor World Arena.
It’s the first championship for ThunderRidge since the school won back to back titles in 2002 and 2003.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about that,” coach Joe Ortiz said. “I’ve chronologically gone through every year and how they’ve finished several times. I did it today.”
He did it with the weight of the missed opportunities sitting on his shoulder. For the next year when he thinks about the chronological finish, it ends with his guys as the defending state champions.
He knew it was never going to be easy, however. This was the third matchup between the Grizzlies (13-2 overall) and the Patriots (13-4). George came away with the first win and the lesson learned from that one remained fresh in ThunderRidge’s mind at the start of the state title game.

More photos. (PaulDiSalvoPhotography.com) “The first game we just realized they were a physical team,” Jason Simental said. “Nobody could really match up with us before so they were the first team to really put it to us.”
The game plan for the Patriots was pretty simple. Apply pressure and be the more physical group. It worked for the first quarter as the teams were locked in a 16-16 tie, but ThunderRidge clamped down in the second and held George to just four point on one field goal and two free throws.
“It helps playing here to be honest,” Ortiz said. “It’s a bigger court, it’s a bigger feel and in a smaller type of confined area it’s tougher because there’s more pressure. Our big guy Nolan Marld was huge. He’s a mismatch and they’re not going to pressure him with a guard.”
Marld led all scorers with 17 points and Simental added 16. Joey Bilello and Jackson Brennan also scored in double figures, Brennan getting all 11 of his points in the first half. Zach Keller had nine, nearly giving the Grizzlies five players in double figures.
“We have a very balanced team,” Ortiz said.
ThunderRidge last played in the 5A title game in 2015 and lost to Overland 55-42. George Washington made it to back-to-back title games in 2017 and 2018 but lost to Eaglecrest and Grandview, respectively.
Jarmell Johnson and Kijuan Thompson led the Patriots with 10 points each, but the combined effort keeps a state basketball title out of George’s grasp for at least another season.
For ThunderRidge, it’s the culmination of a championship drought that began before anyone on the roster was even born.
“We were on a dry streak but we came here to break it,” Simental said. “We had to do that.”

Ball Fever: Previewing the 5A boys basketball Great 8
It’s that time, folks! #MileHighMadness has arrived and after our COVID-shortened season the postseason in our big school Class 5A boys hoops has not let us down in terms of excitement.
Down to our Great 8, our four quadrants are boasting three undefeated squads, rematches, and some who will see each other for the third time. Familiarity will breed some great games and memories, we’re sure!

Quadrant 1

(Steve Abeyta) They always say it’s hard to beat a team three times in the same season but that’s exactly what our overall No. 1 seed Cherry Creek Bruins will try to day when they host Eaglecrest. In their first match up the Bruins jumped out to a 22-8 first quarter advantage that led to a 9-point home win. The Raptors didn’t allow that fast of a start in the second tilt but still lost to the Bruins at home by seven.
This game is littered with two sport studs and the 16-0 Bruins rely heavily on their back court tandem of Myles Purchase and Julian Hammond.
Purchase, affectionately known as THE HEARTBEAT of 2021 in our camp, is the defensive heart and engine of the Bruins while Hammond is as slick and smooth of a scorer as you will find anywhere averaging 23 points per game.
Another D1-bound athlete, Arden Walker, controls the paint and leads the Bruins in rebounding.
The Raptors have a “freakish” athlete of their own in Ty Robinson who is worth the price of admission for his above-the-rim action and averaging 16 points per game on the season himself. It will take a supreme effort from Robinson and crew to knock off No. 1 in their house.

Quadrant 2

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com) In a year where we’ve gotten used to saying, “that seems weird,” it feels very much that way that Chaparral and ThunderRidge haven’t faced each other this year. With Chap finishing league play with one loss and the Grizzlies undefeated in league play they’ll get to settle the Continental clash in true elimination fashion.
The Wolverines lead man is junior big man Joel Speckman who is almost averaging a double-double on the season with 15 points and 9 rebounds per outing, while the Grizzlies tout strong senior leadership behind assist machine Garrett Arnold at point guard with fellow senior Nolan Marold who is not afraid to bang with the best of them on the inside.
For adding scoring punch, keep an eye on guard Luke Williams from Chap and senior Jason Simental for T-Ridge. Both can score in bunches and make a difference down the stretch!
The Grizzlies boast 4 players who average in double figures and 70 points per game vs. Chap’s 59. The question here will be can Chap match the pace and scoring.

Quadrant 3

(Austin Hogan-McCool) This Great 8 Match up doesn’t bring a ton of familiarity and no head to head match up to draw on but it’s one of the most intriguing “public vs private” “city vs suburb” match that could go right down to the wire. 14-1 Regis will host George Washington in an early 4:30 pm start on Tuesday.
This should be a fun pace with GW averaging 77 points per game and the Raiders not too far behind at 70.
The Patriots have felt disrespected by the polls and rankings all season and this is their chance to make a huge statement for themselves and the city regarding the attention they feel they earned this season.
The Patriots earned impressive mid-season wins over Chaparral and ThunderRidge, teams that join them in the Great 8, although T-Ridge did balance that loss with a tight 3-point win in a March rematch. Nonetheless, the Patriots enter the game with extreme confidence behind Jarmell Johnson (19 points per game) and Trey Edmonds (11 points and 8 rebounds).
The wildcard here for the Patriots could be another senior, Kendale Johnson, who has the ability to step up when it counts.
The Raiders don’t boast as many seniors as the Patriots but do have four scoring in double figures on the season led by Michael Wolf and Blakely Stoughton’s 18 points per game each.
The floor general dishing assists all season has been Alonzo Paul who scores in double figures along with dishing out 5 assists each night.
The first game of the day may just be the best!

Quadrant 4

(Steve Abeyta/steveabeytaphotography.com) Might have spoken too soon about Regis/GW maybe being game of the night. Back on February 1, Rock Canyon gave our state’s team with the longest winning streak a true scare in a 46-44 thriller that unbeaten Rangeview pulled off late.
The Raiders are veteran heavy and an extremely poised team down the stretch which has led them to winning four games with a margin of four points or less this season. They have been tested but find a way to pull it out in the end.
Got to see them in person when they were down 18-12 to a talented Fountain Fort Carson squad Sweet 16 and they simply didn’t panic, just stuck to the game plan and their strengths.
Speaking of strength, it is simply amazing the late run the RC Jags are on late season and doing it without their leading scorer/rebounder DeAngelo Horn (electrifying two sport stud!!). The Jags blew us all away beating a well-coached perennial Ball Fever favorite in Overland by 31 points in round 1 with 17 points from senior Nick Fallin and if that wasn’t enough senior PG Fallin followed that performance up with a 35 point explosion at Fossil Ridge — one of our best, senior heavy teams in the state.
There’s no doubt the Jags are for real but they’ll have to deal with the savvy guards of Rangeview in Cade Palmer, Demajio Merritt, and Chris Watkins. A tough trio on the perimeter and a mainstay Raider down low in Jayden Foster doing all the dirty work!
Palmer paces the crew in scoring at 16 points per night and he’ll look to push the Raiders to a faster pace than that 46-44 win back in February.
That pace and heavy weight “sluggin” favors the Jags, can’t wait to see if the Raiders can speed this up and continue “The Streak”!

Ralston Valley girls hoops downs ThunderRidge to advance to Great 8
ARVADA — Ball movement Thursday night was a key to advancing Ralston Valley into the quarterfinals of the Class 5A girls state tournament.
It took a little while for the No. 5-seeded Mustangs to hit their stride against No. 21 ThunderRidge in the Sweet 16 game at Ralston Valley High School. The Mustangs (14-2 record) held just a 8-6 lead after the first quarter, but turned things around to take an eventual 57-29 win.
“I feel like we were slow out of the start,” Ralston Valley junior Saya Sabus said. “Then we just turned it on and it was go, go, go from there.”

Ralston Valley senior Brooklyn Seymour (14) goes up between ThunderRidge senior Angel Makoski (5) and freshman Halle Hanchett (11) during the Class 5A round of 16 game Thursday night at Ralston Valley High School (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Ralston Valley went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter and held the Grizzlies (8-7) scoreless for more than 8 minutes from the end of the first quarter until ThunderRidge freshman Alexis Baker scored and was fouled with 1:20 left in the second quarter.
Senior Sydney Bevington and Sabus poured in six points each in the second quarter for the Mustangs. Senior McKenna Nichols and freshman Hannah Somorin both hit a 3-pointer each to help Ralston Valley take a 26-9 lead at halftime.
“When our post start touching the ball and we can go inside-out against the zone the shots are easier,” Ralston Valley coach Jeff Gomer said of how the Mustangs attacked ThunderRidge’s zone defense after the first quarter. “Once we realized we could use our posts it’s amazing how it changed.”
What hasn’t changed over the past four years for Ralston Valley is where Bevington continues to do her damage offensive. The senior has more that 1,200 points career points and isn’t afraid to pull up with the old-school mid-range jumper.
“She (Bevington) has so much confidence in that mid-range shot,” Gomer said. “People say, ‘Why not have her step out to the 3 with her?’ She is just dead-eye with the 15 to 12-footer. Even on the break she’ll put up for a 10-footer. She shoots it well. It works.”
Bevington scored a game-high 21 points, shooting 10-for-16 from the field against the Grizzlies.

Ralston Valley freshman Sophia Sabus takes a 3-pointer during the second half Thursday night against ThunderRidge. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) “That’s how I’ve always played with driving and the mid-range shots,” Bevington said. “It’s always open with the offense we run. It’s been successful so I’ve been keeping it that way.”
ThunderRidge couldn’t get much going offensively with Ralston Valley using pressure defense through the first three quarters to keep the Grizzlies from getting into a rhythm offensively.
“I think with our defensive pressure and size we were able to get traps in the corners,” Bevington said. “I think that helped swing the momentum with forcing those turnovers.”
Ralston Valley advances into the Great 8 for the third time over the past four years. The Mustangs hit the road to face No. 4 Highlands Ranch on Monday in the 5A state quarterfinals. The impending snowstorm predicted to hit Colorado from Friday night through Sunday moved all Great 8 basketball playoff games from Saturday to Monday, March 15.
“We sure would like to take another step here,” said Gomer, who guided the Mustangs to the state quarterfinals last year where Cherry Creek ended Ralston Valley’s season. “Highlands Ranch is hard to play against. We’ll watch some film, get them on the floor, roll the ball out there and see what happens.”
Ralston Valley has won 12 straight games. The Falcons (13-2) have won 9 straight games.
“We just have to go out and play our best,” Sabus said. “That’s it.”
