  • Rock Canyon leads host of new teams in baseball rankings

Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.

The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).

Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.

Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.

Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.

Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.

The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).

The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).

The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.

There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Cherry Creek baseball takes over as No. 1 in 5A ranking

    Cherry Creek Legend baseball
Cherry Creek is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A baseball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.

The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.

However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.

Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.

There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.

With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Three new teams join 4A baseball rankings

Things got a bit crazy when this week’s Class 4A baseball poll was released.

Three new teams — Pueblo West, Pueblo East and Mountain View — joined CHSAANow.com’s ranking after going unranked in the preseason.

Pueblo West jumped all the way up to No. 3 following its 4-0 start which includs a win over then-No. 4 Palmer Ridge, as well as an impressive showing at a tournament in New Mexico.

Pueblo East is No. 5 this week, while Mountain View is No. 8.

Green Mountain remained No. 1 in the 4A poll. In fact, none of the No. 1s changed from the preseason, meaning Regis Jesuit (5A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Dove Creek (1A) all held firm.

In 5A, Columbine joined the poll at No. 9. They were the lone newcomer to that ranking.

The 3A poll added La Junta (No. 10), while Dayspring Christian (No. 9) and Dolores (No. 10) are new to 2A. 1A added No. 9 Springfield and No. 10 Fleming.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

BOULDER — Valor Christian seniors Kendall Bradbury and Caroline Bryan were simply unstoppable Thursday night at the Coors Events Center in Boulder.

Bradbury and Bryan combined for 53 points as the Eagles showed off its offensive capability with an 87-64 victory over Pueblo West in the Class 4A girls basketball semifinal. The win puts Valor (25-3) in its first girls basketball state championship game.

“We are so motivated. We’ve had a chip on our shoulder and we’ve had something to prove,” said Bradbury, who finished with 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting. “Everyone went out and did their thing. Everyone did their part. It’s amazing to go play for a state championship on Saturday.”

The 4A championship game tips off at 1 p.m. Saturday back at the Coors Events Center. Valor fell short of the title game last year losing to Broomfield in the semifinals.

“We are going to celebrate tonight and enjoy it for the next 20 minutes or so, then get right back out on the court and prepare for Saturday,” Bryan said minutes after the Eagles’ 23-point victory.

Valor raced out to an early 9-0 lead and never trailed. Bradbury was unstoppable in the first half shooting 8-for-11 from the field for 19 points. Fellow senior Caroline Bryan added a dozen points in the first half as the Eagles took a 44-35 lead into halftime.

Pueblo West senior Haley Simental did everything in her power to prevent Valor from mounting a bigger lead at halftime. Simental (23 points, including four 3-pointers) led the Cyclones with 11 points at halftime, including a half-court shot at the buzzer of the first quarter.

Junior Shannon Sanchez also had an impressive scoring output, pouring in 19 points for Pueblo West.

However, Valor went on a 15-0 run to start the second half to build its lead to 24 points midway through the third quarter. Pueblo West didn’t score in the second half until Sanchez hit a 3-pointer with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

“We had a really great run,” Bryan said of the Eagles’ start to the second half. “We maintained the pressure on defense. Pueblo West really couldn’t find a rhythm. We never let them get comfortable. I think that was the key.”

Bryan, along with junior teammates Madison McCoy, Sara Gibson and Heidi Hammond looked very relaxed combining to score the Eagles first 13 points of the third quarter. Bryan finished with 25 points.

“I think they (Bradbury and Bryan) work so well off one another,” Valor coach Jessika Caldwell said. “Pick your poison. If you want to double one on the block the other is standing open for a great mid-range shot.”

Gibson (11 points) and Hammond (10 points) each finished in double-figure for Valor as the Eagles shot 57.7 percent from the field for the game.

“I have a lot of confidence in our offense,” Bryan said. “Our coaches trained us very well from the beginning. We have really perfected the offense she (Caldwell) has given us. We executed well tonight.”

Valor is seeking its first basketball state championship in the school’s history. The private school in Highlands Ranch opened in 2007 is aiming for a third girls team title. The Eagles have state titles in girls soccer (2011) and softball (2014).

There are just three blemishes on Valor’s record this season. The Eagles lost to Windward, Calif. at the Nike Tournament of Champions in December. The other two losses were to 4A Jeffco rival D’Evelyn.

Without Bryan because of injury, D’Evelyn defeated Valor 67-63 on Jan. 29. The other loss to D’Evelyn came by forfeit. Valor scheduled one too many and had to forfeit its last regular season game against D’Evelyn on Feb. 20. Valor self-reported the scheduling mistake Feb. 16 to the Colorado High School Activities Association.

“I think it motivated us to go out every day and work harder,” Bradbury said having to forfeit the rematch against D’Evelyn. “We’ve pushed each other to the extreme.”

Pueblo West (22-5) was the last remaining No. 1 seed in the 4A tournament.

    (Via @GoTrojanNation on Twitter)

Longmont, a No. 6 seed in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament, upset No. 1-seeded Canon City on its home court on Friday night.

The Trojans led 23-16 at the break, and then used a 9-0 run late in the third quarter to go up 34-23. It was 39-29 after three quarters

Canon City did cut the lead to 39-33, but that was as close at the Tigers would get.

Longmont’s Sydney Wetterstrom finished the game with 28 points and 16 rebounds, according to Brad Cochi of BoCoPreps.com.

Longmont returns to the Final 4 for the first time since 2011.

The semifinals are next Thursday at CU’s Coors Events Center.

    (2) Sand Creek 59, (1) D’Evelyn 56

A close game throughout, Sand Creek was able to pull out the win in the final minute.

The Scorpions held a five-point lead at 54-49 with 1:53 to play, but a quick 5-0 D’Evelyn run tied the game with 44 seconds remaining.

Sand Creek had lost in the Great 8 each of the past three seasons. This is the program’s first-ever trip to the Final 4.

    (1) Pueblo West 61, (3) Mullen 45

Pueblo West held just a slim 27-25 margin at the break, but a massive 26-5 advantage in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Cyclones advanced to the Final 4.

The lead got as wide as 53-30 before a 7-0 Mullen run in the fourth closed the gap a little.

Pueblo West was last in the semifinals in 2013, when it lost to D’Evelyn. This marks the third time the Cyclones have been to the Final 4 in four seasons.

    (2) Valor Christian 53, (1) Holy Family 37

On the road, Valor Christian went in and upset Holy Family.

Valor led 27-21 at halftime, and then 38-32 after three quarters, but widened the gap in the fourth.

Kendall Bradbury had 29 points in the win.

With the win, Valor Christian returns to the Final 4. The Eagles lost to Broomfield in Boulder last season.

  • ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the final polls of the regular season.
