  • Chaparral boys hoops grabs ticket to 5A Great 8 with win over Dakota Ridge

LITTLETON — Chaparral used the effective one-two punch of seniors Jake Holtzmann and Chris Moody on Wednesday night to advance to the Class 5A boys basketball Great 8.

Holtzmann (30 points) and Moody (20 points) scored all but 10 of the Wolverines’ points in a 60-47 road victory against 5A Jeffco League champion Dakota Ridge.

“It’s hard to stop both of us (Holtzmann and Moody) at the same time,” said Holtzmann, who closed out the game strong with a 17-point fourth quarter.

Dakota Ridge closed to within three points — 45-42 — on a layup by senior Mason Grothuesmann with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter. However, Chaparral (18-7) responded with Holtzmann scoring 13 points in the final few minutes to allow the Wolverines to win going away.

“When you have guys that are big, skilled and can shoot free throws, it’s really hard to defend,” Chaparral coach Rob Johnson said. “They (Holtzmann and Moody) have had some moments this year where they didn’t have that consistency. Once they find it, it makes everyone better.”

Chaparral made a living at the free-throw line. At one point the Wolverines were 17-for-17 from the charity stripe. They finished 23-for-28.

Dakota Ridge had its struggles at the free-throw line. The Eagles shot just 8-for-14 from the line.

“Chaparral played very, very well. They made their free throws and rebounded very, very well. That is how you close out games,” Dakota Ridge coach Curi Yutzy said. “They did a great job closing out the game.”

Senior Chase Coon was Chaparral’s third leading scorer with eight points, which all came in the second quarter. Coon’s pair of 3-pointer sent the Wolverine fans into a frenzy.

The crowd couldn’t have been much better. It was nearly a standing-room only crowd with large student sections for both teams.

“We’ve played in front of big crowds all year. We are prepared,” Holtzmann said of playing in the load environment. “We have a loyal student section. We love them all and they love us. We are having a fun year with them.”

The Wolverines and their faithful fans head to the Great 8 at the Denver Coliseum on Saturday. Chaparral will face No. 1 seed ThunderRidge (22-3) in the Chauncey Billups Region championship game with a ticket to the Final 4 on the line.

Chaparral is very familiar with ThunderRidge, it’s Continental League foe.

“Awesome. We’ve already played them twice,” Holtzmann said when he was told ThunderRidge defeated Rampart on Wednesday to set-up a third go-around with Chaparral. “It will be fun for a third time. Rubber match.”

Dakota Ridge junior Devante Jones (23) takes a shot in the lane during the first half Wednesday night. Jones led the Eagles with 14 points in the season-ending loss for the Class 5A Jeffco League champions. (Dennis Pleuss)

ThunderRidge pinned a 15-point loss on Chaparral in the ThunderRidge/Chaparral Tip Off Tournament back in early December. However, Chaparral handed the Grizzlies their worse loss of the season a few week ago with the Wolverines taking a 66-42 victory.

“It’s going to be interesting. Joe (ThunderRidge coach Joe Ortiz) is a tough coach to go against three times, that’s for sure,” Johnson said. “We are going to have to find a way to do what we did last time.”

Dakota Ridge (22-3) closed out its most successful season in more than a decade. The Eagles won their first conference title since 2004 and was the lone 5A Jeffco team to advance to the Sweet 16.

“I’m going to choose to enjoy the process we had this year and the journey we had this year,” Yutzy said. “We had an amazing time as a group together as a basketball team that has done some really special things.”

Junior Devante Jones led the Eagles with 14 points. Junior Tyler McFarland also reached double-digits with a dozen points, including three 3-pointers.

“We aren’t going to get too high or too low,” Yutzy said of the Eagles’ season-ending loss. “Obviously, it’s tough because you don’t get to practice tomorrow.”

  • State basketball brackets out in 5A, 4A girls and boys basketball

Overland and Eaglecrest are both No. 1 seeds in the 5A boys brackets. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

The brackets for the Class 5A and 4A boys and girls basketball state tournaments were released on Sunday.

Overland, Regis Jesuit, Eaglecrest and ThunderRidge each earned No. 1 seeds in the 5A boys tournament. Each of those teams, save for Eaglecrest, were ranked No. 1 in CHSAANow.com’s poll at some point this season.

No. 2 seeds in 5A boys include Mountain Vista, Legend, Dakota Ridge and Rangeview.

The Continental League, viewed by many as the toughest in the state, ended up with six teams getting first-round byes, including No. 3 seeds Chaparral and Rock Canyon. The other No. 3s are Fort Collins and George Washington.

Also getting byes in the first round were No. 4 seeds Cherokee Trail, Rampart, Grand Junction and Fossil Ridge.

Defending champion Denver East drew a No. 6 seed, and opens at home against No. 11 Fairview.

On the 5A girls side, Highlands Ranch, Broomfield, ThunderRidge and Monarch earned the No. 1 seeds.

The No. 2s are Cherry Creek, Rampart, Lakewood and Arapahoe.

Also receiving first round byes are No. 3 seeds Grand Junction, Ralston Valley, Grandview and Denver East; as well as No. 4 seeds Legacy, Westminster, Pine Creek and Fossil Ridge.

Two-time defending 5A champion Regis Jesuit is a No. 6 seed, and plays No. 11 Pomona in the first round.

In 4A girls, Canon City, Pueblo West, D’Evelyn and Holy Family were the No. 1 seeds. The No. 2s are Pueblo South, Palisade, Sand Creek and Valor Christian.

Defending champion Mesa Ridge is a No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 Silver Creek to open the tournament.

The 4A boys field is led by No. 1 seeds Longmont, Golden, Holy Family and Denver South.

Valor Christian, Air Academy, Sierra and Pueblo West are No. 2 seeds.

Pueblo East, the defending champion, missed the 4A field.

  • ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

AURORA — No. 1 Regis Jesuit boys basketball needed to bounce back from a devastating loss to No. 2 Thunderridge, and they did just that with a 100-63 thrashing of No. 5 Chaparral Friday night.

Five players scored in double figures for Regis, led by senior Bryan Staerkel’s 19 points and five 3-pointers. Sophomore Geoffrey Kelly was close behind after dropping 17 points and three 3-pointers.

Chaparral was led by Jake Holtzmann’s 18 points and four 3-pointers. Seniors Peter Wilson and Chase Coon added 11 points each.

Regis (20-1, 7-1 Continental League) hit a staggering 16 3-pointers in the game. They will travel to Mountain Vista next Tuesday.

Chaparral (15-6, 5-3), having now lost two straight, will have a tough test when they host No. 2 ThunderRidge next Tuesday.

  • Photos: Mountain Vista boys basketball upsets No. 5 Chaparral

PARKER — Mountain Vista boys basketball used a huge second-half effort to upset the No. 5 Chaparral Wolverines, 70-54, on Tuesday night.

The Golden Eagles were led by senior Ray Beresford who had 23 points, 16 coming in the fourth quarter.

“We ran the floor on them, we started to pressure them and pressure them to make them tired,” Beresford said. “That’s Vista basketball.”

With 3:15 to go in the game, Beresford drove the baseline and was taken to the floor by Chaparral’s Jake Lane. Beresford watched his bounce around and drop in while being fouled. He converted the and-one to push the lead to 13.

“The play hurt a bit, but as I saw the ball roll around and go in I knew that the game had changed,” Beresford said.

“Our effort was great tonight,” Mountain Vista head coach Bob Wood said. “Our plan tonight was to full-court press all night and to get after them and keep the tempo of the game up. We felt they had less depth than us, and by the fourth quarter they would be the tired team. We were excited and more fresh than they were in the last minutes of the game.”

Golden Eagle Brady Subart poured in 18, with a strong second and third quarter.

“It feels good to be back on track, and this was a team effort, everybody stepped up,” Subart said.

“It got to the point where we were frustrated with our self,” said Chaparral head coach Rob Johnson. “We weren’t finishing our shots, and lost focus. It got down to where their two best players started scoring. We feel that we are better than the last two or three weeks; we have had one good game in the last three weeks.”

Chaparral was led by senior Jake Holtzman who had 24 points, with 11 points coming in the third quarter. Senior Chris Moody added 16.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

Lutheran is now No. 1 in the 3A poll. (Courtesy of Lutheran HS)

For the second straight week, there’s a new team atop the Class 3A boys basketball rankings.

Lutheran knocked off Faith Christian, last week’s No. 1, with a 65-55 win on Saturday. Monday, the Lions received eight of the 14 first-place votes and totaled 128 points in taking over atop that poll.

Faith Christian dropped to second, just ahead of Colorado Springs Christian, which occupied the top spot prior to Faith. Colorado Academy, the preseason No. 1 team in 3A, is fourth this week and Jefferson Academy rounds out the top five.

With Lutheran, Faith, CA and Jefferson Academy all hailing from the 3A Metro, it means that league currently has four of the top five teams in 3A. No. 8 Kent Denver gives the league five ranked teams.

In 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 pick. ThunderRidge (No. 2) and Eaglecrest (No. 3) continued to follow the raiders.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 4, and Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Chaparral also moved up, to No. 6, while Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 following its first loss.

Denver East is up to No. 8, Fossil Ridge is now No. 9 and Monarch joined the poll at No. 10.

The 4A poll continued to be led by Longmont. That ranking added No. 8 D’Evelyn and No. 10 Lewis-Palmer this week.

Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) held firm atop their respective polls.
