  • Resurrection Christian joins hockey rankings at No. 10

    Regis Jesuit Heritage hockey

Resurrection Christian is the lone newcomer to CHSAANow.com’s hockey rankings this week. The Cougars are No. 10.

Other than that, though, there wasn’t much change overall. Outside of Mountain Vistsa jumping Monarch for the No. 4 spot, teams Nos. 1-9 all stayed put.

That means Ralston Valley retained its No. 1 ranking again this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

Troy Green (24) and Montbello are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

Montbello and Mountain Vista have joined this week’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Chaparral moved into the top-5 following a big win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest on Friday. Chaparral is No. 4 this week, Eaglecrest is No. 5.

Cherry Creek bumped up three places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge also moved up to No. 8 and Rock Canyon remained ranked at No. 10.

In 4A, the changes continued. Pueblo Central spear-headed the movement with its jump to No. 3 this week, while Mead (No. 6), Palmer Ridge (No. 8) and Evergreen (No. 10) are all newcomers.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) also joined the 1A poll.

  • No. 8 Dakota Ridge edges Legend in boys hoops thriller

LITTLETON — Dakota Ridge junior Matt Newkirk came up with perhaps his most decorated rebound and free throw of basketball career Tuesday night.

Legend spent the majority of the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter on its offensive end attempting to break the 57-57 tie with Dakota Ridge on the Eagles’ home court. After several Titan shot attempts that just wouldn’t fall, Newkirk finally got his hands on the ball and was fouled in the paint with 0.9 seconds left on the clock.

“I was just going for the ball. Doing everything I could for my team so Legend couldn’t get another shot,” Newkirk said of the chaotic final seconds. “There were some nerves, but I slowed down and took a deep breath. Just shot the ball.”

    Legend Dakota Ridge boys basketball

Newkirk made both free throws in the double-bonus situation to give Dakota Ridge (4-0 overall), ranked No. 8 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll, a 59-57 lead. A last-second pass and heave by the Titans hit the top of the backboard and the Eagles escaped with a two-point victory.

“I thought it was a travel,” Dakota Ridge senior Cody Pittman said of his thoughts when the whistle blew as Newkirk fell to the floor with the ball in his hands. “They called the foul and I had faith in Matt (Newkirk) that he would knock down the free throw.”

Dakota Ridge coach Curi Yutzy had asked Newkirk to miss the second free throw after making the first so Legend (1-2) wouldn’t have the opportunity to throw the ball the length of the court for a possible tip-in at the buzzer.

“It was a great job by Matt to knock down those free throws. Well, knock down the first free throw,” Yutzy could say with a smile. “We were trying to miss the second. He (Newkirk) couldn’t miss it to save his life.”

Clearly, Legend coach Kevin Boley was disappointed the whistle blew with under a second to play giving the Eagles the chance to win the game in regulation.

“I don’t know whether there is a foul or not, but you swallow your whistle in that situation and go to overtime,” Boley said. “You make the kids decide the game.”

The non-league game was close the entire contest. Neither team ever held a double-digit lead. Dakota Ridge took its biggest lead of 34-26 midway through the third quarter. Four different Eagles drained five 3-pointers in the period during Dakota Ridge’s run.

Pittman led the way with a pair of 3-pointers in the third. He ended up leading the team with 18 points. He was the only Eagle to reach double-digits.

“We are a good shooting team I think,” Pittman said of the 21-point third quarter. “It was one our streaks.”

Legend junior Monroe Porter was on a streak most of the night. He finished with a game-high 23 points, including six 3-pointers. Junior Jared Small, in his first game on the court for the Titans after transferring from Regis Jesuit, had a breakout fourth quarter.

“Clearly he (Porter) was the one making the plays,” Boley said. “We got into our press in the fourth quarter. Jared (Small) started making some plays and getting to the rim. We got some energy going on the defensive end.”

Despite playing with four fouls the entire final quarter, Small poured in 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

“It was tough to find an answer to guard him (Small),” Yutzy said. “He did a great job attacking the paint.”

A big loss for the Titans was when Small fouled out with 34 seconds left in the game. Dakota Ridge senior Tanner Lukens hit both free throws after getting fouled by Small to tie the game at 57-57.

“When we schedule games the previous year we look for these type of games,” Yutzy said. “I have upmost respect for coach Boley and the Legend program. I love competing against the best. I love the challenge and gives us the opportunity to get better.”

Dakota Ridge finishes off its schedule before winter break with four straight road games starting with a 7 p.m. tipoff Thursday, Dec. 11 in Colorado Springs against Doherty.

Legend competes in the Smoky Hill Shootout starting Thursday. The Titans open the three-day tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday against Horizon at Smoky Hill High School.

  • Regis Jesuit now No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A boys basketball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After last week’s big win, it was assumed that Regis Jesuit boys basketball would take over the top spot in Class 5A. Monday, the Raiders officially moved up.

Regis Jesuit received 15 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and had 159 overall points. This came on the heels of a 3-0 week to open the season, which included a win over preseason No. 1 Overland.

But Regis was far from the only mover. ThunderRidge also started its season 3-0, and has jumped from preseason No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The 5A poll also added four new teams: No. 7 Aurora Central, No. 8 Dakota Ridge, No. 9 Cherry Creek and No. 10 Rock Canyon.

Things changed in 4A, too. Longmont stayed put as the No. 1 team, but there are three new teams — led by No. 2 Golden, which had an impressive opening week, including wins over Vista PEAK and then-No. 6 D’Evelyn. Also joining are No. 6 Pueblo Central and No. 8 Air Academy.

In 3A, there’s another new No. 1 team. Colorado Springs Christian assumes the top spot there after Colorado Academy lost to Fossil Ridge’s JV team last week.

New to the 3A poll are Alamosa (No. 8) and Manitou Springs (No. 9).

The No. 1 teams stayed put in both 2A (Sanford) and 1A (McClave).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

LAKEWOOD — Broomfield might have preferred higher than a No. 11 seed for the Class 4A state football playoffs, but the Eagles had no issues when they left Jeffco Stadium in a driving rain Friday night.

“You are never satisfied with a low seed, but we made the best of it,” Broomfield senior defensive back Shane Watzel said after a 27-17 victory over No. 6 Dakota Ridge. “It turned out alright.”

21-unanswered points by Broomfield propelled the Eagles to a 24-3 lead late in the third quarter. The big turning point was a span of less than four minutes in the second quarter where Broomfield turned a 3-3 game into a 17-3 lead.

Dakota Ridge kicker Zach Barwick tied the game with a 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Broomfield quickly responded on the next play from scrimmage with a 74-yard touchdown run by sophomore Jalon Torres with 8:45 left in the second quarter.

“We kind of took the momentum back and never gave it back to them (Dakota Ridge),” Broomfield coach Gary Davies said of the Eagles’ 14-point barrage in less than four minutes.

Broomfield intercepted a pass on Dakota Ridge’s next offensive drive. Senior Jack Sherwood scored on a 20-yard touchdown run with 4:51 left before halftime to extend the lead to 17-3.

“We knew coming in the run game was going to be big for us,” Broomfield senior quarterback Logan McCormick said. “Dakota Ridge manned us up and made us throw the ball a little, but it was all our run game. Our (offensive) line did a good job. That was key.”

McCormick got into the running action himself with a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:38 left in the third quarter to make the score 24-3.

Broomfield was able to control the line-of-scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

“We don’t do a lot very well, but we will play physical,” Davies said. “That’s what we try to do. We were pretty physical tonight.”

Dakota Ridge junior Jeremy Lujan has been unstoppable for most of the season. The tailback had an 8.5 yards per rush average while racking up 1,714 yards on the ground coming into Friday’s playoff opener.

“I’m totally please with how the defense played,” Davies said. “It was awesome.”

Broomfield was able to bottle up Lujan for the most part. The tailback had a 25-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and a touchdown catch from junior quarterback Adam Clary in the final minutes, but it wasn’t enough for Dakota Ridge.

“We knew Broomfield was going to be physical and they are a senior-laded team. They are going to do some damage in the playoffs,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “We’ve got good some good players coming back, but it just sucks right now for these seniors. We had a great group of seniors.”

Following a 28-16 loss to Ponderosa on Oct. 2, Dakota Ridge rolled to four straight victories entering the postseason. The Eagles outscored opponents 188 to 13 in the four-game stretch.
