  • Rock Canyon boys hoops grabs emotional OT win over Chaparral

    (Zach Marburger/CHSAANow)
    (Zach Marburger/CHSAANow.com)

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Led by senior guards Mitch Lombard and Tyler Garcia, the Rock Canyon Jaguars pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory 66-59 at home over Continental League rival Chaparral Friday night.

“It’s so sweet,” said Garcia, who finished with a team-high 21 points. “We haven’t beaten them in the four years I’ve been here. It’s awesome to finally win one my senior year.”

The Jaguars (13-3 overall, 3-0 5A Continental League), ranked 8th in CHSAAnow.com’s weekly boy’s basketball rankings, had their hands full right out of the gate. The No. 6-ranked Wolverines (11-4, 1-1) were able to jump out to an early lead behind the work of seniors Jake Holtzmann and Chris Moody, who were each able to get into the paint at will in the first half.

And when the shots weren’t falling for Chaparral, they were able to out-muscle the Jaguars for offensive rebounds that lead to easy put-backs or fouls. At half, the Wolverines led 30-20.

About the only thing keeping Rock Canyon in the game was the work of Garcia, who was all over the floor — picking someone’s pocket in the backcourt, or streaking down the court for a coast-to-coast lay in.

“Tyler — I’ve never met a kid with more competitiveness in his heart and soul,” Rock Canyon head coach Kent Grams said. “It’s all he is. He’s the heart and soul of our team. When Tyler goes, we go.”

Still, despite Garcia’s best work, Rock Canyon still trailed big in the third quarter. That’s when Lombard — who’d been quiet for most of the game as Chaparral did a great job cutting off the passing lanes — began looking for his own points, hurling himself into the lane again and again.

“We talk about Mitch all the time,” said Grams. “He’s such a special kid. He does a great job of being able to put his team on his back when he needs to. It was an outstanding job by him. The leadership he brings to our team is outstanding.”

“We just got a sense of urgency in the second half, and we just realized it was go-time,” said Lombard. “We had to do something. We just decided to take over the game, and a lot of that was made possible by my teammates being open and making their shots.”

The deficit narrowed to six by the end of third quarter, but Rock Canyon still trailed — in fact, their first lead of the game didn’t come until overtime, when the Jaguars won the tip and Garcia slipped out for an easy lay-in to gain a 52-50 advantage.

From there, it was all Lombard, who barreled into the lane for lay-ins to stretch Rock Canyon’s lead out even further. Chaparral, despite a great effort from Holtzmann (who finished with 19 points) and Moody (who finished with 16, including a late three that kept the game tight), simply ran out of gas on the road.

Lombard finished with 19 points, including six in overtime.

“Resilience is something coach talks about day-in and day-out,” said Lombard. “He just says every time we get knocked down we’ve got to come together as a team and bounce-back, and that’s what we did.”

“We’ve been talking about facing adversity all year,” added Grams. “I’ve had these guys for three years now and we haven’t had a win like that. I’m just proud of our guys. We stuck together.”

Rock Canyon will look to ride their emotional high to another victory against Ponderosa on the road Tuesday, while Chaparral will try and bounce-back Tuesday on the road against Castle View.

  • Rock Canyon returns to 5A basketball ranking at No. 8

Rock Canyon has returned to CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A boys basketball rankings. The Jaguars are No. 8 in this week’s poll.

They were last ranked just prior to the break, but fell out last week. Rock Canyon’s return means the Continental has five ranked teams for the fourth straight poll.

Elsewhere in 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 selection with all 16 first-place votes. In fact, teams Nos. 1-4 stayed put, including No. 2 ThunderRidge, No. 3 Dakota Ridge and No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Overland returned to 5A’s top-5, while Chaparral dropped one place to No. 6.

Mountain Vista is No. 7, Denver East is No. 9 and Montbell is No. 10.

The four other No. 1 teams also remained the same: Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

In 4A, Pueblo West (No. 8) and Sierra (No. 9) joined this week. The lone newcomer in 3A this week was Manitou Springs (No. 10), while 2A added Caliche (also No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Legend, Denver East join first boys basketball rankings after the break

    Legend Dakota Ridge boys basketball
Monroe Porter, left, and Legend joined the 5A poll at No. 9 this week. Dakota Ridge, meanwhile, is up to No. 3. (Dennis Pleuss)

Legend and Denver East have joined CHSAANow.com’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A this week. The Titans are No. 9, and the Angels are No. 10.

Legend, 9-3 this season, has won seven consecutive games. It plays at No. 8 Mountain Vista on Friday.

Denver East, meanwhile, returned to the poll after a short hiatus. At 5-6, the record is somewhat deceiving. Three of the losses came at an out-of-state tournament, and a fourth, to Chaparral, came in a wild double-overtime matchup. They own wins over Legend and No. 2 ThunderRidge.

Regis Jesuit continued its stay atop the 5A poll, and are a unanimous pick with 16 first-place votes. The Raiders are 10-0. ThunderRidge also kept its No. 2 spot.

Behind those two, however, the movement began.

Dakota Ridge (11-0) shot up to No. 3, and Eaglecrest bumped up one place to No. 4. Chaparral rounds out the top five.

As was the case before the break, a total of five teams from the Continental League are ranked. With that league now in the thick of its schedule, it should be a battle every night.

Each of the other No. 1 teams also stayed put. Those are Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

  • Chaparral boys basketball finishes with four players in crazy 2OT win over Denver East

Somehow, Chaparral boys basketball beat Denver East in double overtime on Thursday night.

Despite finishing the game with four players on the court. Despite 46 points from Denver East star Brian Carey. Despite its own stars, Jake Holtzmann and Chris Moody, fouling out.

“You hear about (playing with four players), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that,” Chaparral coach Rob Johnson said on Friday morning.

Less than 12 hours earlier his third-ranked team had pulled off an 82-78, double-overtime win over the defending Class 5A champions.

Denver East's Brian Carey (11) had a big game for the Angels. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Chaparral’s bench shortened on Thursday when one player hurt his ankle in PE class and was unavailable to play. That followed another player unexpectedly moving to Florida a few days ago. So the Wolverines had nine players available against Denver East. Five fouled out by game’s end, leaving Chaparral to play the final 10 seconds with four players.

“There were so many crazy things that happened just to even go to that point,” Johnson said.

Up two with less than 10 seconds to play in regulation, Denver East had Brian Carey at the line to ice things. Carey entered the game 45-of-49 on free throws (92 percent), and was 10-of-10 at that point in the game. He hit the first shot, but missed the second.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Johnson said. “He never misses free-throws.”

(Indeed, Carey finished 18-of-19 from the line. “He’s an unbelievable guard that’s very hard to contain,” Johnson said. “Just unbelievable.”)

Moody grabbed the rebound, and pushed the ball up the court. Holtzmann was to his left. The defender slid over to Holtzmann to try and anticipate the pass, so Moody pulled up and hit the game-tying 3-point shot.

In the first overtime, Chaparral was up two when Moody was fouled intentionally going for an open bucket. A flagrant foul was called on East, but Moody was also whistled for a technical due to his reaction. That was his fifth foul, and so he fouled out with 21 points.

The two teams traded a pair of free-throws. Eventually, East’s Ben Potts tipped a missed layup in at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime — but only after the refs huddled for a minute-long conversation to discuss whether the shot came before the buzzer. They eventually ruled that it did.

Jake Holtzmann (10) had 26 points to lead Chaparral. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

As the second overtime opened, both teams continued to lose players due to fouls. Chaparral’s Holtzmann (26 points) fouled out on the first possession of the second overtime. By the time the game ended, Denver East also had five players foul out and had junior varsity players playing significant time.

For Chaparral, that meant it was up to Chase Coon. He responded by hitting free-throw after free-throw in the second overtime. He finished with 15 points in the game, including 11-of-14 shooting from the line.

“He had been struggling from the free-throw line the last couple of games and really stepped it up,” Johnson said. “He had a big steal to tie it up, and in double-overtime he kept making free-throws. He just took it over.”

With 25 seconds left, Chaparral’s Peter Wilson had four fouls.

“I said, ‘Peter, you cannot foul, we don’t have any players left on the bench.’ He goes in there and gets a foul,” Johnson said, laughing.

So Chaparral finished the game with four on the floor, the final touch of adversity to overcome on Thursday night.

“That’s exactly what we talked about,” Johnson said. “Not only those things, but there are some little things within our own team that we were battling through and overcame. Then, obviously the situation they played through. It was really good for us. Hopefully it can kind of define who we are.”

  • Continental League has top three teams in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Dennis Pleuss)
ThunderRidge is among five teams from the Continental League ranked in 5A this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

The Continental League has an early grip on the Class 5A boys basketball rankings.

With changes this week, league members now own the top three spots in CHSAANow.com’s poll. A total of five Continental teams are ranked this week.

The group is led by Regis Jesuit, which continued to lead the 5A poll. ThunderRidge remained at No. 2, and Chaparral moved up one place to No. 3.

Also ranked from the Continental League are No. 9 Mountain Vista and No. 10 Rock Canyon. Additionally, Legend received votes this week.

The Centennial League has three teams ranked — No. 4 Overland, No. 5 Eaglecrest and No. 8 Cherry Creek. No other league has multiple members ranked this week.

In 4A, Valor Christian and Conifer had both joined.

The Eagles joined at No. 8 following a 77-59 win over then-No. 3 Pueblo Central on Friday. The Lobos, meanwhile, are No. 10 after starting the season 8-0.

Elsewhere in 4A, Air Academy moved up two spots from No. 5 to No. 3, and Pueblo South jumped from ninth to fourth. Palmer Ridge, 6-0 this season, rounds out the top five after moving up from No. 8.

Longmont retained its perch on top of the 4A poll.

The three other No. 1 teams also stayed the same this week: Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

  • Photos: No. 2 Grandview girls hoops stifles Chaparral with stingy defense

AURORA — No. 2 Grandview girls basketball smothered Chaparral with tight defense and strong play from sophomore Michaela Onyenwere to win 61-38 in the first round of the Grandview Invitational Tournament on Wednesday.

The Wolves jumped out to a 18-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Their defense forced multiple turnovers, from back-court violations to steals to double dribbles. The full-court press proved to be too much for Chaparral.

Onyenwere was unstoppable, scoring 10 points in the first quarter and finishing with 20. Chaparral’s Margaux Bess netted 13 points.

Grandview moves on to play the winner of Grand Junction Central and Rampart at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while Chaparral will face the loser of that game at 4:30 p.m.

  • Montbello, Mountain Vista join new-look 5A boys basketball rankings

Troy Green (24) and Montbello are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A this week. (Dennis Pleuss)

Montbello and Mountain Vista have joined this week’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Chaparral moved into the top-5 following a big win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest on Friday. Chaparral is No. 4 this week, Eaglecrest is No. 5.

Cherry Creek bumped up three places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge also moved up to No. 8 and Rock Canyon remained ranked at No. 10.

In 4A, the changes continued. Pueblo Central spear-headed the movement with its jump to No. 3 this week, while Mead (No. 6), Palmer Ridge (No. 8) and Evergreen (No. 10) are all newcomers.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) also joined the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.
