  • Regis Jesuit now No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

Regis Jesuit is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A boys basketball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After last week’s big win, it was assumed that Regis Jesuit boys basketball would take over the top spot in Class 5A. Monday, the Raiders officially moved up.

Regis Jesuit received 15 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and had 159 overall points. This came on the heels of a 3-0 week to open the season, which included a win over preseason No. 1 Overland.

But Regis was far from the only mover. ThunderRidge also started its season 3-0, and has jumped from preseason No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The 5A poll also added four new teams: No. 7 Aurora Central, No. 8 Dakota Ridge, No. 9 Cherry Creek and No. 10 Rock Canyon.

Things changed in 4A, too. Longmont stayed put as the No. 1 team, but there are three new teams — led by No. 2 Golden, which had an impressive opening week, including wins over Vista PEAK and then-No. 6 D’Evelyn. Also joining are No. 6 Pueblo Central and No. 8 Air Academy.

In 3A, there’s another new No. 1 team. Colorado Springs Christian assumes the top spot there after Colorado Academy lost to Fossil Ridge’s JV team last week.

New to the 3A poll are Alamosa (No. 8) and Manitou Springs (No. 9).

The No. 1 teams stayed put in both 2A (Sanford) and 1A (McClave).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Overland heads preseason 5A boys basketball rankings

    Denver East Overland boys basketball
Austin Conway and Overland are the preseason No. 1 team in 5A boys basketball. (Pam Wagner).

Overland, a final four team a season ago, is the preseason No. 1 pick in Class 5A boys basketball.

The Trailblazers return a talented roster, as well as three of their four leading scorers from 2013-14. Included are senior Division I commits Austin Conway (Wyoming) and Ryan Swan (Air Force), as well as top 2016 national recruit De’Ron Davis.

Overland got 10 first-place votes, and had 151 total points.

Regis Jesuit is No. 2 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll, while defending champion Denver East begins at No. 3. Eaglecrest is fourth, and ThunderRidge rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked in the preseason is No. 6 Chaparral, No. 7 Abraham Lincoln, No. 8 Arvada West, No. 9 Rangeview and No. 10 Mountain Vista.

Elsewhere, Sanford is the lone defending champion to open up as a preseason No. 1 team. It heads the 2A poll.

Reflecing the uncertainty of the 4A this year, eight different teams received first-place votes in that classification’s preseason ranking.

Longmont got five of those votes, and leads the 4A poll as preseason No. 1. Pueblo South also got five first-place votes, and is No. 2.

Lewis-Palmer is third, Thomas Jefferson is fourth and Valor Christian rounds out the top five. Defending champion Pueblo East is No. 9 in the preseason. Holy Family, last season’s 3A champion which moved up to 4A this year, is No. 8.

In 3A, Colorado Academy leads the way. The Mustangs, runner-up last season, received seven of the 11 first-place votes.

1A’s preseason poll is led by McClave. Defending champion Hi-Plains is No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

DENVER — When the match ended, she sought out each player for a hug, some words, and a smile.

To the end, she more than a coach. Chaparral volleyball’s T.R. Ellis, a legend in the sport, was like a mother to her players. All of them.

Ellis coached her final match on Saturday, a win over Fairview in the Class 5A state tournament. The 36-year veteran is retiring.

“Volleyball is for sure the true team sport,” Ellis said on Saturday morning. “And if you love kids, and you want to coach a sport where everybody has to be involved to be successful, volleyball is the sport to coach. I’ve preached that forever.

“And I’ve been so blessed because I got to go to Chaparral, where athletics is important, it was valued, and we had great players but we also had great fans and great parents and great support. So we got to build this successful program because of all that.”

Ellis’ career — which included two state championships, multiple All-Americans, collegiate players, players-turned-coaches — started at a junior high school in Texas. She then spent eight years at Olathe, seven at Douglas County, and the final 18 at Chaparral, making her the only coach in the Wolverines’ history.

Ellis retired as a teacher prior to last season. During her time in the building at Chaparral, she was instrumental in creating one of the most supportive student sections in the state — for any sport.

“That influence that I had because I taught there, those kids, you build those relationships,” Ellis said. “If you’re just coaching there, you don’t have those. I think the coach needs to be a teacher.”

Ellis announced to her team before the season that this would be her last.

“First of all, I want to get somebody in place. I hope my JV and sophomore coach all just move up,” she said. “But I think it’s important that the girls know (about the retirement), because you don’t spring something like that.”

She called the end “difficult.” But that was mostly the lingering bitter taste from a five-set loss to Rampart on the first day of the 5A tournament, one in which Chaparral surrendered an 11-2 lead in the final set.

It meant Saturday’s win didn’t lead to a semifinal berth as Rampart had already won the pool.

“If Rampart would have just beat us, we’d have said, ‘You know what? They’re just better,’” Ellis said. “But because we had the big lead, and we squirreled it away, and because went down like that, it’s just such a bitter pill. But we came back this morning, and all the girls, as soon as I saw them in the cars, they were bright, they were ready. They knew they were playing for pride, they were playing to have fun with each other because they wanted to play together on the court.

“That’s kind of been their legacy at Chaparral since we had all those great teams, is they really do like each other. And when they like each other, they can play better. That’s what’s so disappointing about yesterday: They feel like if they like each other so much, well how can they lose?

“It was tough,” she continued, “and the best part was playing first (on Saturday) because of all the energy and the music and doing the chicken dance — we love doing that — that’s what the game should be about. So that was really fun. That just got them pumped up. So they were ready.”

Earlier this season, there was a point where Olathe, Douglas County and Chaparral were all ranked by CHSAANow.com. It was like some cosmic message, recognizing where the coach had been, the impact she’d had. She printed those rankings out and hung them on the door to her office at Chaparral.

“I thought, ‘That’s cool,’” Ellis said.

Each year, Chaparral puts out a team program early in the season around the same time. This season, it was a bit delayed.

“I was like, ‘Darn.’ I was so disappointed,” Ellis said. “I wanted it ready.”

Well the delay (it was only a week) had good reason. Chaparral’s booster club president reached out to past booster presidents to ask former players and parents to write words of thanks. The result was four pages of admiration, thank yous and more — all addressed to Ellis.

“It was so, so sweet,” Ellis said. “And you know, that’s the relationship that you build.”

And really, that’s Ellis’ legacy. Yes, she’s won championships, coached stars, but it’s about all the players who are keep coming back. Nicole Dalton, one of those All-Americans who is now playing at Texas, often texts Ellis and current players.

“They’re just so proud to be alums, and so happy for us,” Ellis said. “It’s just a big family. The legacy is that. It’s not, ‘How many times have you won? How many times have you been to state?’ It’s, ‘What kids still come back?’ It’s just neat.”

The volleyball world will miss a coach like Ellis, who had a certain touch about her. At the state tournament, she always made a point to interact with and show genuine interest toward the ball runners, officials, or anyone else who happened by.

“She just made everyone feel so special,” said Bethany Brookens, CHSAA assistant commissioner who oversees volleyball.

Ellis said she’d miss “the highs of when we win,” but not the lows. And she’ll miss practice.

“Practice is fun for us,” Ellis said. “Going to the gym, and being with the kids. I love high school kids. I love them. I love their energy and I love their hearts and I love their humor. I love when they’re happy. I’m going to miss that.

“But I won’t miss all the really hard work. It’s just changed so much. You can’t just coach anymore. You coach 20 percent of the time, and you manage and take care of your social obligations 80 percent.”

    As for what’s next?

“I’ve taken up golf. I’m terrible,” she said. “And my husband and I are scuba divers. We love to travel. … I’m a licensed Zumba instructor. That’s really, really fun. We did Zumba for warmup, the girls and I, all this week. They loved it. It’s just so much fun.

“And I’m a step grandma, and my son — he and his beautiful wife have moved to Parker are trying to start their family. So I’m going to just be a super, duper grandma.”

Highlands Ranch dropped its first match of the Class 5A volleyball regionals on Saturday. It was a grueling, five-set affair — but that it went five sets later turned out to be a major advantage.

The Falcons rallied from dropping that match to later win 5A’s Region 11 in a tiebreak over Rocky Mountain, 25-15. With the win, Highlands Ranch moves on to the 5A state tournament.

But things looked bleak for a while.

For starters, since volleyball’s regionals moved to three-team pools a few years ago, the overwhelming majority of those advancing no longer drop a match. It has turned the tie-break scenario, once a common occurrence, into a rarity.

Ralston Valley, the region’s host and No. 11 seed in 5A, had already beaten No. 27 Rocky Mountain in four sets to open regional play.

So when No. 14 Highlands Ranch lost to Rocky Mountain in the region’s second match (19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14), it had one last-gasp shot at qualification: knock Ralston Valley off.

The Falcons did that, by a 3-1 margin. All three teams in the regional, at that point, were 1-1 — dusting off the tiebreak scenario. In the event of a three-way tie, two teams faceoff in a one-set playoff, with the winner facing the third in a second one-set playoff match.

Highlands Ranch was set aside for the first tie break because it had won a higher percentage of total sets played (5 of 9) during the regional compared to Ralston Valley (4 of 8) and Rocky Mountain (4 of 9). Rocky Mountain beat Ralston Valley 25-15 in that first tie-break, then advanced to play Highlands Ranch.

Highlands Ranch then won the second playoff match, 25-15, to advance to the state tournament.

The 5A field will consist of: Eaglecrest, Grandview, Regis Jesuit, Rampart, Chaparral, Pine Creek, Cherokee Trail, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Fairview, Highlands Ranch and Legend

Headed to 4A’s state tournament are: Lewis-Palmer, Ponderosa, Cheyenne Mountain, Montrose, Valor Christian, Mullen, Mead, Berthoud, Battle Mountain, Pueblo West, Niwot and Air Academy.

In 3A’s tournament: Eaton, Valley, Bayfield, University, Colorado Springs Christian, Manitou Springs, Platte Valley, Sterling, Faith Christian, Pagosa Springs, Coal Ridge and Olathe.

Comprising the 2A field: Swink, Resurrection Christian, Paonia, Simla, Sargent, Yuma, Dolores and Colorado Springs School, as well as four Wildcard teams to be selected on Monday.

And 1A’s field: Sangre de Cristo, Kit Carson, Otis, Weldon Valley, Norwood, Springfield, Idalia and Fleming — as well as four additional Wildcard teams.

    Notables:

    • A seeding committee will meet on Monday morning to finalize the pools for the state tournaments. The Wildcard selections in 1A and 2A will be selected based on the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings published on Monday. The next four highest-ranked teams who made it to regionals but didn’t advance will be the selections.
    • All five defending champions have made a return trip to the state tournament. They are: Grandview (5A), Lewis-Palmer (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A).
    • Chatfield is the highest-remaining regional seed of any of the 5A, 4A and 3A regions. The Chargers were No. 17, and upset No. 8 Douglas County. (The 1A and 2A regions are not seeded across the classification, but instead set by district finish.)
    • Of those seeded regionals (5A-3A), the host teams went an astounding 70-2 in matches, including 212-36 in terms of sets won.
    • 5A’s Region 10 wore out the courts in its first two matches. First, No. 10 Fairview rallied to beat No. 27 Rangeview in five sets — 26-28, 25-18, 17-25, 28-26, 15-13. Rangeview then turned around and went another five sets in losing to No. 15 Arapahoe, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-9. The final match only went four sets, a 3-1 Fairview win over Arapahoe to claim the regional crown.
    • Kit Carson trailed its first match in 1A Region B 0-2, but rallied to take a five-set win (20-25, 12-25, 27-25, 25-15, 16-14) and later won the regional.

  • Notebook: State’s top three girls lacrosse programs undergo coaching changes

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
When Centaurus and Air Academy met last season, it was a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Next season, both teams will have new coaches. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

For each of the past four seasons, girls lacrosse’s semifinals have had one thing in common: Cherry Creek, Air Academy and Centaurus have all been there.

Well, those schools now have another common thread: all three programs — at this moment, the top three in the sport — will have new head coaches going into the 2015 season.

Centaurus’ Genny Horning has stepped down as the Warriors coach, BoCoPreps.com reported on Monday. That followed Air Academy’s Sean Harmon and Cherry Creek’s Brianne Tierney, who resigned within a day of one another in June.

Cherry Creek has since hired longtime assistant Kathryn Ames as its new coach. Air Academy has not yet made a new hire.

It may mean that new blood will rise. Chatfield, for instance, made its first-ever semifinal appearance last season; Arapahoe’s been in the quarterfinals for each of the past three seasons; Chaparral is another possibility.

Or old blood could reemerge. Kent Denver, which has won three state titles in school history, made four-consecutive semifinal appearances from 2009-12.

Now, this isn’t to say that Ames, or whoever Air Academy and Centaurus eventually hire, won’t have immediate success. Tierney won a state championship in her first season (2013). That could very well happen again.

And, mind you, Cherry Creek has appeared in every single state championship game in the sport’s 17-year sanctioned history. So change hasn’t seemed to bother the Bruins in the past.

But that these three giants of the sport are all changing coaches in the same offseason may signal there’s a bit of transition ahead for girls lacrosse, at least in the short term.

DSST-Green Valley Ranch volleyball makes history

When Denver Science & Tech-Green Valley Ranch qualified for the Class 3A volleyball regionals on Monday, it marked the first time in school history a team was headed to the postseason.

The Raptors, 10-7-1 this season, earned the No. 36 seed, and are playing in Region 1 with top-seeded Eaton and No. 24 Middle Park.

It’s DSST-GVR’s first year as a sanctioned member of CHSAA.

“We’re super pumped about it,” athletic director Jamelle Austin said on Wednesday. “We’ve got to go to Eaton, Colorado at 4:30 on Halloween night, so we’re going to have some fun with it.”

The school put up a 20-foot poster congratulating the team, and is planning a pep rally on Thursday.

“Once we got the news, that was Monday morning, we made an announcement to the school and the girls were really excited,” Austin said.

    Short stuff

    • It’s always fun when this happens: Grand Junction was on the outside of the 5A playoffs looking in until a win from rival Montrose pushed the Tigers over the 32-team threshold by adding to their Wild Card point totals.
    • Volleyball regionals are this weekend. That means the state tournament is next Saturday. In my mind, volleyball’s tournament is the only thing that can come close to matching the atmosphere at state wrestling, which is probably CHSAA’s premier event with its huge attendance and the fact that it draws athletes from all corners of the state to one location. State volleyball is chaotic with five courts going at once, but it’s a good chaos. The event is also unique in that it’s the only team sport where all classifications come together under one roof to decide championships.
    • Lewis-Palmer volleyball remained ranked No. 3 in MaxPreps’ latest national poll.

    CHSAA regional seeding/pairing procedure

    1. All league champions will automatically earn a berth to regionals.

    2. The remaining teams (up to 36) will be selected based on the MaxPreps Rankings published at the end of the regular season.

    3. Teams will then be seeded on the CHSAA regional seeding criteria:

    • The MaxPreps rankings will be the primary consideration
    • The CHSAA Seeding Committee will only make changes based on splitting up league opponents and geographical considerations (if and when possible)

    4. Teams seeded Nos. 1-12 will host regionals.

    5. All regional winners will automatically advance to the state champions

  • Volleyball releases regional tournament brackets in all classes

AURORA — Eaglecrest, Lewis-Palmer and Eaton nabbed the top seeds when volleyball’s regional tournament brackets were released on Monday morning.

Eaglecrest is the top seed in the Class 5A field and is set to host No. 24 ThunderRidge and No. 36 Liberty in its regional.

Grandview, Regis Jesuit, Rampart, Chaparral, Pine Creek, Cherokee Trail, Douglas County, Cherry Creek, Fairview, Ralston Valley and Legend will also host regionals. See the full 5A bracket here.

The top 12 teams (and regional hosts) were all seeded strictly based upon the MaxPreps computer rankings at the regular season’s end. All league champions earned automatic bids to regionals, and the remaining teams were selected based on the same MaxPreps rankings.

Lewis-Palmer heads the 4A field, and will host No. 24 The Classical Academy and No. 36 Weld Central. Ponderosa, Cheyenne Mountain, Montrose, Valor Christian, Mullen, Mead, Berthoud, Pueblo West, Niwot and Air Academy are also regional hosts.

Find the entire 4A bracket here.

The 3A regional tournament field is led by No. 1 Eaton, which will host No. 24 Middle Park and No. 36 Denver Science & Tech – Green Valley Ranch. This is the first postseason appearance for a GVR team in the school’s short history.

Other 3A regional hosts are Valley, Bayfield, University, Colorado Springs Christian, Manitou Springs, Platte Valley, Sterling, Faith Christian, Pagosa Springs, Coal Ridge and Olathe.

The full 3A bracket is here.

The 1A and 2A regional brackets were also released after those two classifications completed district play this past weekend. Those fields were not seeded by a committee, but instead the districts determined regional placement.

Here is the 2A bracket. The 1A bracket is available here.

The 3A-5A tournaments each have 36-team fields, while 1A and 2A have 24-team regionals.

All classes will complete play by Saturday. The winners of each region will move on to the state tournament, set for Nov. 7-8 at the Denver Coliseum.
