  • Jeffco League has a stranglehold on 4A baseball

Life in baseball’s Class 4A Jeffco League is cutthroat. It borders on cannibalism.

Within this ecosystem, 10 teams are battling for three automatic berths into the 4A postseason field. As of Monday, five of them are ranked. That includes three in the top five, and the No. 1 (D’Evelyn) and No. 2 (Evergreen) teams — who meet on Tuesday evening.

And they’re all beating up on one another.

For example: On Monday, No. 6 Wheat Ridge upset No. 1 D’Evelyn. It was the second-consecutive week in which a top-ranked 4A Jeffco team fell to a league foe.

“It’s tough, man,” said longtime D’Evelyn coach Dan Porreco. “I mean everybody is really good. We ran into Wheat Ridge last night, and they did a nice job. They’re good. Every day, you’ve got to be ready and do your best. It’s crazy.”

Added Evergreen coach Steve Jones: “It’s like a heavyweight prize fight each time you take the field.”

Last week, Jeffco had the top three teams in the poll, with Green Mountain, D’Evelyn and Evergreen. But then Valor Christian — another 4A Jeffco team — upset No. 1 Green Mountain.

Shortly, the Eagles, too, found themselves ranked. They are No. 9 this week. Green Mountain is now No. 5.

“It does put a little more emphasis on the games, but it makes the regular season fun,” said Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller, who is in his 13th season with the Farmers. “I think the kids look to it as a challenge, and if you present it that way to them, every day is a fun day.”

The league placed three teams in the Final 8 last year — but that doesn’t include current league member Valor, which played independent schedule last season and also reached that stage. And Green Mountain won last season’s 4A title, the first for a team in the league since Golden won in 2003.

Is this the start of a shift in power?

“When you’re looking at the Northern League … they’ve produced a few state champions over the last number of years,” said Valor Christian coach Keith Wahl. “At some point in time, when you’re looking at the best league, you’re looking at the best playoff record, you’re looking at the state champions coming out of the league, and (the 4A Jeffco is) right there. But I think for us to be considered (the best), you’ve got to continue to hold up the trophy at the end.”

This season, the strength has been evident. Teams from the 4A Jeffco are a combined 25-4 against other 4A leagues this season. The includes an astonishing 17-0 mark from the current top eight teams in the league standings.

Shoot, the 4A Jeffco is 20-10 against 5A teams to this point.

Consider for a moment just the top five:

    • Wheat Ridge is 11-3, but one loss is to a team from Arizona, and the other two were one-run losses to 5A teams.
    • Evergreen is 12-1, with the lone loss coming to a team from Oregon.
    • D’Evelyn was 13-0 before losing to Wheat Ridge on Monday.
    • Green Mountain? 10-4, with three out-of-state losses, and a fourth to Valor, a league foe.
    • Even Valor’s 7-6 record is deceiving. The Eagles have four out-of-state losses, one loss to a 5A team, and their other loss came to Littleton — which, yes, plays in the 4A Jeffco.

“It prepares our kids for the every day,” said Wahl, now in his seventh year at Valor. “Today we go against Golden, we have to bring our best. Tomorrow we go against Evergreen, we have to bring our best. It helps our guys. And ultimately, it does season you for playoff time.”

“There’s lot of good teams, and I think the better pitching you see, the better it makes you come playoff time,” added Green Mountain coach Brad Madden. “Because you’re not getting any (No. 3 or 4 pitchers) in the playoffs. It’s all 1s and 2s.”

Said Jones, the Evergreen coach: “It’s like the old saying from the Bible: ‘Iron sharpens iron.’ Playing the toughest competition day-in and day-out, it’s just going to make you better.”

But there’s one catch: You’ve got to make the playoffs first.

“It pays off,” Jones said. “It does pay its dividends — if you can survive.”

Because the league only gets three automatic qualifiers, it leaves the other seven fighting for five at-large berths with the rest of the teams in 4A. One of those berths will almost certainly go to Ponderosa, which will automatically qualify if it wins 10 games. The Mustangs already have nine wins.

So, really, the 4A Jeffco teams are fighting for four at-large berths, which are based upon standings in the Wild Card points. That’s tough.

“If we don’t keep winning, we could be on the outside looking in. If Golden doesn’t keep winning, they could be on the outside looking in,” Wahl said. “I mean, it’s a tough deal to stare down the barrel of that gun.”

If the season were to end today, the league would get five teams in the postseason, including two at-large berths. One of those berths would go to Littleton, meaning Valor Christian — currently the ninth-best team in 4A, according to voters — would stay home.

The Eagles have some ground to make up in terms of Wild Card points. They are currently six spots outside of an at-large berth, so their focus right now is on securing an automatic spot.

“This group this year is young for us, they’re inexperienced, but what they’re getting an opportunity to experience is every game matters,” Wahl said. “I don’t think they’ve ever had that before.”

And in the 4A Jeffco this season, that feeling is only magnified.

“There’s no breathers, especially when we get backed up (by weather) like this,” Madden said. “There’s no chance to go get a JV guy some work on the mound. You’ve got to go with your guys the whole way through.”

Added Jones: “There are any number of teams in the Jeffco 4A league that are worthy to be in the playoffs, and some of them aren’t going to make it. It’s a tough thing to embrace. But, of course, that’s the system and we’re going to live under it and do our best to qualify.”

Porreco, now in his 20th year at D’Evelyn, said this is as good as he’s ever seen the league.

“I mean there’s been some great teams in the past — you know Golden when they won the state tournament (in 2003); Wheat Ridge when they dropped down (from 5A), they’ve been good every year, and Evergreen’s always really good,” the coach said. “This is, I would say, might be the best the league’s been in a long time.”

“I don’t think there’s an easy team in our league,” added Miller, the Wheat Ridge coach. “You’ve got to rev it up pretty much every day.”

LAKEWOOD — There were plenty of exhausted soccer players looking toward the sky after 100 minutes of play Thursday at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Class 4A Jeffco League rivals Golden and Wheat Ridge, ranked No. 5 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A girls soccer poll, settled for a 1-1 tie after 80 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods.

“It was a tough tie. Two really great teams out there. They both left it all out there,” Golden coach Luke Vanderglas said. “I’m proud of my girls and proud of (Wheat Ridge’s) girls too.”

The Demons (3-2-1, 1-2-1 4A Jeffco League) looked primed to pull off the upset. After a scoreless first half, Golden senior Hannah Stoner fired a laser in the 49th minute that beat Wheat Ridge goalkeeper Abby Bausch to give Golden a 1-0 lead.

“She (Stoner) stepped up and played it to the right side,” Vanderglas said. “She buried it to the near post. It was a great shot and great composure.”

However, with less than two minutes to play in regulation time the Farmers (8-1-1, 3-0-1) got the equalizer. Junior Frankee Broer got her foot on the ball in the goalie box. The ball spun toward the far side of the net and just got inside the post with 1:27 left in the second half.

“I think we were was a little scared, but our team always plays to the end, the last second, the last minute. I knew we were going to get it,” Broer said. “I honestly was scared it wasn’t going in. It went in. That’s all that matters.”

It was the fourth time this season Wheat Ridge has gone into overtime. The Farmers got overtime victories against Holy Family and Standley Lake, but lost to Ponderosa nearly a month ago.

“We threw some players forward. I don’t think we necessarily panicked, but I think with that sense of urgency we created a lot of energy,” Wheat Ridge coach Dan Watkins said. “When you throw the ball into the box with extra players there good things happen.”

Wheat Ridge junior Eliza Van Wetter and freshman Macie Browne had the best scoring chances in the extra sessions. Both of their shots sailed just wide of the net.

“Based on being down and needing to claw back into it to get a result in league, but we wanted to get the win for sure,” Watkins said. “The kids were very resilient, but credit Golden. They did a really nice job closing down opportunities for us.”

The Farmers were missing leading goal scorer in sophomore Alexandra Nillen and freshman defender Kyra Midroy. Both were out of town with club teams, according to Watkins. Nillen and Midroy will be back in town Sunday and with the team in another critical conference game next week.

Wheat Ridge has a key showdown with Evergreen (9-0, 4-0) at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, back at Lakewood Memorial Field.

The Cougars, ranked No. 2, has given up just one goal so far this season. Evergreen stands atop the very competitive 4A Jeffco standings after a 1-0 win Thursday over its chief rival Conifer.

“Evergreen is the next one up and they are a fantastic team, a very talented team, but we’ve got a good group too,” Watkins said. “We are going to go out and give our best effort and see if we can pull out that one.”

Golden has a pair of non-league road games coming up. The Demons head to District 6 Stadium in Greeley for a 7 p.m. game Friday, April 10, against Greeley Central. Golden stays on the road when it faces Englewood at 6 p.m. Monday, April 13.

“We are getting better every single day,” Vanderglas said. “That’s all I’m asking from these girls.”

  • 4A boys basketball Great 8 roundup: Longmont wins in final moments

No. 1 Longmont snuck past Valor Christian 47-46 in a back and forth battle to move to 26-0 and more importantly, earn a bid to the Final 4 for the first time since 2010.

The Trojans’ Kolton Bachman drained a shot with 3.9 seconds remaining to edge out the No. 2 seeded Eagles. Longmont had made at least the Sweet 16 the past three seasons, but this was their first Great 8 since 2011.

Longmont will face Sierra, a No. 2 seed which claimed the Colorado Springs Metro crown, in the state semifinals.

    (2) Sierra 56, (4) Pueblo South 47

A seesaw battle in Colorado Springs saw the Sierra Stallions squeeze out a 56-47 win over Pueblo South in one of four outstanding 4A Great 8 games.

Tevion Thompson left the game with an injury in the second half, but returned shortly to give the Stallions a much-needed boost. The Stallions return to the Coors Events Center where they won back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010.

    (2) Air Academy 45, (1) Golden 41

Despite a scoring drought for most of the second quarter, the Air Academy Kadets hung on to topple No. 1 Golden and advance to next weekend’s Final 4.

Austin Dewing knocked down key free throws with the waning seconds to seal the victory for the Kadets. They’ll face Pikes Peak Athletic Conference foe Lewis-Palmer Friday for a chance to go to the state championship game.

    [divider]

    (4) Lewis-Palmer 57, (3) D’Evelyn 55

Lewis-Palmer got a late steal, and then two game-winning free throws with 7.2 seconds left to pull the upset on the road.

D’Evelyn led 55-52 with 42.6 seconds remaining. Jonathan Scott hit two free throws to make it 55-54. Then, Lewis-Palmer tied the game.

It marks a return to the stage that Lewis-Palmer is very familiar with. The Rangers won titles in Boulder in 2012 and 2013.

Golden basketball players celebrate after the Demons rallied in the final minute to defeated Thomas Jefferson 69-65 in the Class 4A boys basketball state Sweet 16 game Saturday night at Golden High School. GOLDEN — Golden needed a furious last-minute rally to avoid being the third No. 1 seed to bow out of the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament Saturday in the round of 16.

The Demons, top seed in the Richard Tate Region, trailed No. 4 Thomas Jefferson 65-60 with less than a minute to play. On its home court, Golden rallied with a 9-0 run to close the game to take a 69-65 victory and advance to Great 8.

“Everyone made a shot when they had to. Everyone did their job,” Golden junior Nick Capaul said. “What really helped us was no one was getting down when we were down by five points. Nobody thought it was over.”

Golden sophomore Kayden Sund (45) takes a jump over a trio of Thomas Jefferson defenders Saturday night. Sund's eight-point outburst in the fourth quarter helped the Demons rally for a 69-65 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

Senior Jason Johnson started the rally for the Demons (22-3 overall) with a driving layup. Senior Ryan Thistlewood tied the game with 43 seconds left with a long 3-pointer coming out of a timeout.

“I felt confident in it. I let it go and it went in. It felt good,” said Thistlewood, who led the Demons with 18 points.

Golden coach John Anderson called a timeout when the Demons got the ball back after Johnson’s layup to draw up an inbound play to get the ball to Thistlewood for a 3-pointer.

“Situations like this you get the ball into your best player’s hands to get a shot,” Anderson said. “It wasn’t the greatest shot. He (Thistlewood) was off balance a little bit. It was a deep NBA 3-pointer. He knocked down the shot.”

TJ missed a runner in the lane with the game tied, 65-65. Anderson called a timeout with 19.8 seconds left to set up what would be the eventual game-winning bucket.

Despite not scoring for the entire game, Capaul was confident he could deliver in the final few seconds.

“(Capaul) says, ‘Coach if you give me the ball I’ll make the shot,’” Anderson said of the conversation during the timeout. “That wasn’t the plan, but he (Capaul) tips it in. That’s what you want. It eased me a little bit because I knew guys wanted the ball in their hands.”

Thistlewood found himself one-on-one and drove down the lane. His floater didn’t drop, but Capaul came from the baseline to tip the ball in with 4 seconds left to give Golden a 67-65 lead.

“I said a pray to God that I get a chance to get a shot up,” Capaul said. “I got the tip. I was at the right place at the right time.”

Thistlewood stole the ball as TJ attempted to get down the court in the final seconds. He was fouled and made both free throws with a second remaining to seal the victory and close the book on the dramatic ending.

“Unbelievable game,” Anderson said. “Grant (TJ coach Grant Laman) and I said before the game this isn’t a Sweet 16 game this is like a Final 4 game. It was a tough match up.”

TJ (13-12) held a double-digit lead in the first quarter on the Demons’ home court. Seniors Josh McNair (18 points) and Jalen Rose (17 points) dominated down low while senior Sergio Garcia, juniors Evan Gould, Henry Cooper and sophomore Ravel Moody combined for seven 3-pointers on the night.

“That was the best inside team we’ve played all year long, hands down,” Capaul said. “(McNair) is probably the best player I’ve played against all year. Their 3-point shooting was unbelievable too. They came ready.”

Golden’s five starters all finished in double-figures. Junior Ryan Blodgett (14 points) had a huge first half and senior Cole Greff (10 points) had a steady game on both ends of the court facing the athletic Spartans.

Sophomore Kayden Sund (12 points) came up big in the fourth quarter scoring eight straight points for the Demons.

“That was the plan going in. We couldn’t have just one guy scoring all the points,” Thistlewood said. “We had to have a total team effort. That’s what we did.”

Golden’s opponent in the state quarterfinals will be Air Academy. The No. 2 seed Kadets defeated Pueblo Central 64-54 earlier in the day to advance. The Great 8 game will be played March 7 at Golden High School.

The brackets for the Class 5A and 4A boys and girls basketball state tournaments were released on Sunday.

Overland, Regis Jesuit, Eaglecrest and ThunderRidge each earned No. 1 seeds in the 5A boys tournament. Each of those teams, save for Eaglecrest, were ranked No. 1 in CHSAANow.com’s poll at some point this season.

No. 2 seeds in 5A boys include Mountain Vista, Legend, Dakota Ridge and Rangeview.

The Continental League, viewed by many as the toughest in the state, ended up with six teams getting first-round byes, including No. 3 seeds Chaparral and Rock Canyon. The other No. 3s are Fort Collins and George Washington.

Also getting byes in the first round were No. 4 seeds Cherokee Trail, Rampart, Grand Junction and Fossil Ridge.

Defending champion Denver East drew a No. 6 seed, and opens at home against No. 11 Fairview.

On the 5A girls side, Highlands Ranch, Broomfield, ThunderRidge and Monarch earned the No. 1 seeds.

The No. 2s are Cherry Creek, Rampart, Lakewood and Arapahoe.

Also receiving first round byes are No. 3 seeds Grand Junction, Ralston Valley, Grandview and Denver East; as well as No. 4 seeds Legacy, Westminster, Pine Creek and Fossil Ridge.

Two-time defending 5A champion Regis Jesuit is a No. 6 seed, and plays No. 11 Pomona in the first round.

In 4A girls, Canon City, Pueblo West, D’Evelyn and Holy Family were the No. 1 seeds. The No. 2s are Pueblo South, Palisade, Sand Creek and Valor Christian.

Defending champion Mesa Ridge is a No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 Silver Creek to open the tournament.

The 4A boys field is led by No. 1 seeds Longmont, Golden, Holy Family and Denver South.

Valor Christian, Air Academy, Sierra and Pueblo West are No. 2 seeds.

Pueblo East, the defending champion, missed the 4A field.

  • No. 2 Golden boys hoops one win away from capturing 4A Jeffco title

WHEAT RIDGE — Golden had a little unfinished business to take care of before turning its attention to the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament.

The Demons, ranked No. 2 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys hoops poll, hasn’t claimed the 4A Jeffco League title since the 2008-09 season. Golden (19-3, 13-1 in league) took one step closer to ending the drought Wednesday night with a 56-47 victory against its biggest rival — Wheat Ridge (15-7, 8-6).

“We haven’t won league in six years. It’s always been Valor or D’Evelyn,” said Golden senior Ryan Thistlewood who led the Demons with 18 points in the road win. “It’s our turn.”

Golden closes out its regular season at No. 8 D’Evelyn on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. If the Demons defeat the three-time defending league champ D’Evelyn (15-7, 11-3) on its home court Golden will win the conference title outright.

Golden sophomore Kayden Sund, 45, elevates for a shot over Wheat Ridge seniors Vedin Kozic (3), Jordan Jones (1) and Dan Rankin (44) on Wednesday night. (Dennis Pleuss)

No. 5 Valor (17-5, 12-2) knocked off D’Evelyn 61-50 on Wednesday to end a four-peat for the Jaguars. Valor could still share the conference with Golden.

It will be the third meeting of the season between the Demons and Jaguars. Golden was victorious in both meetings so far this season. The Demons defeated the Jaguars in the championship game of the Preview Classic, which both teams co-host back, in December. Golden edged D’Evelyn 51-48 in a conference game a month ago.

“It’s good. I love playing in front of a full house,” Golden coach John Anderson said of facing the Jaguars on Friday. “It’s probably going to be for a No. 1 seed and a league championship. I’m glad we’re playing them (D’Evelyn).”

Golden threatened to blow out Wheat Ridge early on Wednesday. The Demons grabbed a 12-2 lead in the first quarter. However, the Farmers chipped away at the lead.

“Wheat Ridge kept battling back,” Thistlewood said. “All of the sudden it was a close game. It was going to be a dogfight the rest of the game.”

Wheat Ridge took its first lead of the game with 2:20 left in the third quarter. A bucket by senior Jordan Jones gave the Farmers a 33-32 advantage.

“We clawed our way back into it. We could have lay down,” Wheat Ridge coach Tommy Dowd said. “Our problem is never heart. We’ve got heart. The problem is we are what we are. We are athletic guys who play basketball.”

Golden answered with a 14-0 run to regain the lead and momentum. During a stretch of 5 minutes, 20 seconds to end the third quarter and start the fourth quarter the Farmers were held scoreless.

Golden’s defense employed a box-and-one zone defense in attempt to limit Wheat Ridge’s leading scorer Vedin Kozic. The senior still managed 18 points, but Golden received some key contributions of its own.

Junior Ryan Blodgett had his typical double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kayden Sund hit a huge 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter on his way to nine points and seven rebounds. Junior Cole Harris came off the bench for the Demons with seven points, including a key fourth-quarter 3-pointer.

Golden junior Ryan Blodgett, left, looks for room to operate under the basket as Wheat Ridge senior Vedin Kozic (3) makes it difficult during the first half Wednesday. Large student sections on both sides kept the atmosphere buzzing throughout the rivalry game.

“It’s awesome. It’s a playoff-type of game. I’d like to play these guys (Farmers) all the time,” Anderson said. “You get better. You learn. You make mistakes. (Wheat Ridge) plays so hard that we need to step up our intensity a little bit.”

Wheat Ridge’s inside presence of seniors Willie Harris and Dan Rankin kept the Demons from dominating the inside. Harris finished with nine points.

“Golden is a hard match-up for us with their size, length and they can shoot it,” Dowd said. “I thought they played hard and did a good job. I wish them good luck in the tournament too.”

Wheat Ridge hosts No. 5 Valor Christian at 7 p.m. Friday to wrap up the regular season.

Golden, D’Evelyn, Valor and Wheat Ridge are locks to qualify for the 32-team 4A state tournament. The rest of the 4A Jeffco teams will have to hope to be one of the five at-large bids when the state bracket is released Sunday, Feb. 22, on CHSAANow.com.

  • ThunderRidge takes over as No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

ThunderRidge took down No. 1 Regis Jesuit last week, and took over the top spot in the Class 5A boys basketball poll this week.

The Grizzlies received 21 of the 22 first-place votes and amassed 219 total points in rising to the top of CHSAANow.com’s ranking. They beat Regis Jesuit 59-36 on Tuesday.

Regis dropped to No. 2. Behind them, Overand (No. 3) and Eaglecrest (No. 4) held steady while Rock Canyon moved up to No. 5.

Rangeview jumped up four places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge fell to No. 7 and two newcomers were next — eighth-ranked Mountain Vista and No. 9 Cherokee Trail. Chaparral rounds out the 5A ranking.

There was little change to 4A, where Longmont continued to be a unanimous No. 1 selection.

In 3A, Grand Valley joined at No. 9. Faith Christian remained atop that poll.

Likewise, the No. 1 teams in 2A (Resurrection Christian) and 1A (Sangre de Cristo) also stayed the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the final polls of the regular season.

Rangeview is No. 10 in this week’s 5A boys basketball rankings. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Rangeview has joined this week’s Class 5A boys basketball ranking at No. 10.

The Raiders, who are riding an eight-game winning streak, totaled 18 points to crack CHSAANow.com’s ranking.

The 5A poll continued to be led by Regis Jesuit, which got 18 of the 20 first-place votes in the classification. ThunderRidge, which got the other two first-place votes, stayed put at No. 2. Those two teams play on Tuesday.

Overland bumped up one spot to No. 3, leaping Eaglecrest. Chaparral rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked this week in 5A: No. 6 Dakota Ridge, No. 7 Rock Canyon, No. 8 Denver East and No. 9 Fossil Ridge.

In 4A, Longmont extended its stay atop the poll. The Trojans are a unanimous pick with all 20 first-place votes following their one-point win over then-No. 2 Holy Family.

Golden returned to the No. 2 spot in 4A this week, just ahead of Holy Family, which fell to No. 3.

The 4A poll added Air Academy (No. 9) and Pueblo South (No. 10) this week.

For the third time in three weeks, there is a new No. 1 atop the 3A poll after Lutheran was upset by Jefferson Academy last week.

Faith Christian makes a return after garnering nine of the 15 first-place votes. Colorado Springs Christian, another former No. 1, got the other six first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Lutheran dropped to No. 3, while Jefferson Academy is No. 4.

That ranking added Alamosa (No. 10) this week.

Elsewhere, Resurrection Christian (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A) both stayed atop their respective rankings.

The 2A poll added Sedgwick County. 1A added Kit Carson. Both are ranked tenth this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
