ARVADA — It isn’t easy to run the table in the Class 5A Jeffco softball conference.

The Dakota Ridge Eagles, No. 1 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A rankings, were flying high with a seven-game winning streaking coming into Saturday’s league contest against Ralston Valley. The Mustangs (10-7, 3-2 in league) were saddled with a three-game losing streak, but were able to buck the skid.

Ralston Valley knocked off the top-ranked Eagles with a 7-6 victory at home in eight innings. Senior Kat Schaefer crossed the plate for the game-winning run, scoring all the way from first base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Sydney Harsh in the bottom of the eighth inning.

“I saw third base was open and coach (Wendy Davies) was telling me to go,” Schaefer said about what she saw rounding second base as Dakota Ridge’s defenders charged to field the bunt. “Right when I saw the catcher not cover home I knew we won. It felt good.”

The throw to third base in attempt to get Schaefer out sailed into the Mustangs’ dugout to score the final run. It was the third error in the final three innings for the Eagles (13-3, 4-1).

“We knew this was going to be a tough game. Wendy always prepares her teams well from year-to-year,” Dakota Ridge coach Marv Van Lingen said. “I knew with a three-game skid that we would be fighting a team that is trying to break that skid.”

It was déjà vu for the Eagles. Ralston Valley took a 2-1 victory against Dakota Ridge in extra innings last season on the Mustangs’ home field.

Ralston Valley led for the majority of Saturday’s game. Sophomore Alexa Samuels led the way with an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning to give the Mustangs an early lead. Samuels finished 3-for-3 from the plate with a pair of triples.

The Mustangs led 4-1 through five innings before Dakota Ridge rallied with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Kacey Valerio came off the bench with a pinch-hit two-run single and her older sister, Dani Valerio, followed that up with an RBI single to get the Eagles right back into the game.

Ralston Valley regained the lead at 5-4 in the bottom half of the sixth when freshman Gianna Browdy scored from second base on a fielding error.

The top-ranked team responded again with a two-run top of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead. Down to their final strike, Dakota Ridge sophomore Melissa Mages looped in an RBI double to tie the game at 6-6. Junior McKenzie Wilhelm gave the Eagles their first lead of the game with an RBI single.

The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff triple by Samuels.

“She (Samuels) is definitely a clutch player,” Schaefer said.

Junior Maddy Smith drove in Samuels with an RBI single to send the game into extra innings. Ralston Valley managed seven hits and was opportunistic capitalizing on eight walks the Eagles issued.

Dani Valerio was left stranded at second base in the top of the eighth inning for Dakota Ridge. Ralston Valley jumped on the chance to put the game away after Schaefer led off the bottom of the eighth with a single.

“I think we all focused on playing as a team and didn’t focus on who we were playing,” Samuels said. “It was a good team win. It was fun.”

Ralston Valley junior Rylie Strong picked up the victory on the mound. She gave up nine hits in the complete-game victory. Dakota Ridge junior Megan Sansburn pitched the first two innings, but struggled with her command giving up four walks. Sophomore Carlye Levy took over in the circle for the Eagles in the third inning. Van Lingen put Sansburn back in at pitcher in the bottom of the eighth inning to face Harsh, who put down the perfect bunt on the game-winning play.

“We got the bunts down and got the hits when we needed them,” Davies said. “It was a whole team effort.”

Dakota Ridge can still take the conference title. The Eagles close out league with road games against Columbine (Tuesday) and Lakewood (Thursday) next week.

“In hindsight, this is probably going to be a good thing hopefully to get the girls refocused,” Van Lingen said. “It might have happened at the right time.”

Ralston Valley closes it regular season against Bear Creek (Tuesday) and Columbine (Thursday) next week before heading to the postseason.

“It’s really good for our confidence coming off those big losses,” Schaefer said. “We know Dakota is a great opponent. We came out strong and finished strong today.”

  • Not much movement in football rankings after top-10 teams go 54-11 in Week 4

    Legend Highlands Ranch football
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Ranked football teams had an outstanding weekend last week, and as a result, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement in the latest CHSAANow.com rankings on Monday.

Top-10 teams went a combined 54-11 last week, and only two of those losses came to unranked foes.

So it follows that all seven No. 1 teams remained the same this week. Leading their respective rankings are Valor Christian (Class 5A), Pine Creek (4A), Lutheran (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Arickaree/Woodlin (6-man).

There wasn’t a whole lot of change elsewhere.

In 5A, the teams ranked Nos. 1-6 — Valor, Pomona, Grandview, Ralston Valley, Fairview and Regis Jesuit — didn’t budge.

The classification did add at Rocky Mountain at No. 10, and Overland jumped Cherry Creek for the No. 7 spot, but it was a quiet week otherwise. Regis Jesuit remains No. 9.

The 4A poll added Greeley West at No. 8. The biggest mover there was Fort Collins bumping up to No. 4 this week.

Palisade rejoined the 3A poll at No. 10, while 2A added No. 10 Montezuma-Cortez. Platte Canyon (also No. 10) was 1A’s newcomer, and Flagler (another No. 10) joined the 6-man ranks.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Fossil Ridge now No. 3 in 5A softball rankings

Fossil Ridge softball is now ranked No. 3 in the 5A poll. (Pam Wagner)

Fossil Ridge moved up four spots in this week’s Class 5A softball poll from CHSAANow.com.

The Sabercats, who went 4-0 last week to improve to 12-1, are now No. 3.

Dakota Ridge remained on top of the 5A ranking again this week, though voting continues to be split. The Eagles got five of the 11 first-place votes, with No. 2 Brighton getting two and Fossil Ridge the other four.

The 5A poll got two new teams this week: No. 9 Grandview and No. 10 Grand Junction Central.

In 4A, Berthoud (No. 8) and Erie (No. 10) joined. That ranking continued to be led by Frederick.

Strasburg stayed atop the 3A poll, and rightfully so. The team beat then-No. 2 Sterling and then-No. 3 Valley as part of a 4-0 week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Lujan cracks 300-yard mark in Dakota Ridge football’s win over Wheat Ridge

    Dakota Ridge Wheat Ridge football

LAKEWOOD — The question Friday night at Jeffco Stadium was straightforward: Which team would bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season?

Dakota Ridge junior running back Jeremy Lujan showed he didn’t want anything to do with a two-game losing streak. Lujan had a monster game with 321 yards rushing on 25 carries and added five catches for 56 yards in the Eagles’ 38-14 victory against Wheat Ridge, who was saddled with its second straight loss.

“All week he (Lujan) was kind of in a grumpy mood. I didn’t know if he was worried because he didn’t get a lot of yards last week, if he was just down, hurt or just focused,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “After that first run we knew he was pretty focused on what he wanted to do tonight.”

    Dakota Ridge Wheat Ridge football
Dakota Ridge junior Jeremy Lujan (1) breaks through a tackle attempt by Wheat Ridge senior Brandon Saunders (70) on Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. Lujan had a huge game with 25 carries for 321 yards on the ground and four touchdowns in Dakota Ridge’s 38-14 victory. (Dennis Pleuss)

On the second play from scrimmage Lujan broke off a 64-yard touchdown run. He added scoring runs of five and 27 yards before halftime to give the Eagles a 21-0 advantage at the break.

“I was just really focused this week. I wanted to come out here and have a big game,” Lujan said. “It’s been hard the first couple of weeks on offense for me.”

Defending 4A state champion and top-ranked Pine Creek pounded Dakota Ridge 31-3 last Saturday. Lujan had just 56 yards on the ground in the loss. Wheat Ridge didn’t fair much better last week against Pueblo South, ranked No. 2 in this week’s CHSAANow.com 4A football poll. The Farmers were handed a 37-20 loss in their homecoming game.

Despite the losses, Wheat Ridge (No. 9) and Dakota Ridge (No. 8) stayed in the 4A’s top-10 rankings before heading into the non-league game Friday night.

“We had a good week of practice. I’m really proud of our kids and coaches for bouncing back against a really good Wheat Ridge team,” Woitalewicz said. “I’m proud of our kids on how they responded.”

The Farmers showed some life in the second half scoring on their opening drive. Senior Jordan Jones scored on a 4-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to get Wheat Ridge on the board. Jones had another impressive game with 23 carries for 181 yards, but the night belonged to Lujan.

Dakota Ridge’s junior tailback ripped off an 81-yard run for his fourth touchdown of the night on the first play from scrimmage after the score by Jones.

“He is a dynamic player,” Woitalewicz said of Lujan. “He was awesome tonight.”

Lujan credited his offensive line for more than doubling his yards on the ground this season in just one game.

“Our offensive line was doing everything they could tonight. Without them we wouldn’t be anything on offense,” Lujan said. “We knew we had to bounce back tonight. Everything just kind of went our way tonight.”

The Eagles finished out their scoring with 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Clary to senior Jack Cavallaro late in the third quarter. Dakota Ridge added a 36-yard field goal by Zack Barwick.

Dakota Ridge will get a good test against Standley Lake next Friday night. That game will be played at Broomfield High School’s stadium. The Gators have won two straight after starting the season 0-2.

Wheat Ridge senior Anthony McGinnis capped off the Farmers’ scoring with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

Wheat Ridge’s next game will be 4 p.m. Friday at Jeffco Stadium against Green Mountain (1-3).

  • Notebook: 5A softball only grows more confusing by the week

    Brighton Grandview softball
Brighton softball is among the many contenders in Class 5A. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

A little more than three weeks ago, Eaglecrest softball went to Dakota Ridge and easily handled the Eagles.

The final was 8-1 that day. They’d already beaten Douglas County, a quarterfinal team last season, as well as Rock Canyon, another quarterfinalist in 2013. No one is going to anoint a state champion after three games — but Eaglecrest sure looked like a favorite at that point.

Well, here’s the state of Class 5A softball at this moment: Dakota Ridge is ranked No. 1, Eaglecrest is now No. 9. And both are still very much in contention for the No. 1 overall seed come next month.

The classification has been crazy. Consider that there ceased to be an unbeaten team in 5A softball on Sept. 11 — less than three weeks into the season.

But what makes it all the more confusing is the sheer amount of parity.

Chaparral shot up to No. 5 in this week’s ranking after 10-consecutive wins. The Wolverines dropped their first two games this week.

After Eaglecrest’s 3-0 start, the Raptors lost to Brighton. Two games later, Brighton lost to Columbine. Columbine turned around and lost to Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista then fell to Cherry Creek. Two games after that, Cherry Creek lost to Lakewood, which then lost to Chatfield.

Dakota Ridge is currently the No. 1 team in the state. They have won four games in a row, but have the loss to Eaglecrest and another to Mountain Range. Two games after beating Dakota Ridge, Mountain Range lost to Fossil Ridge.

“When the committee sits down to figure out head-to-head, it’s going to be: ‘What week?’” joked Bud Ozzello, CHSAA’s assistant commissioner who administers softball. “That’s how good this classification is.”

So who will end up as the No. 1 seed? Who knows. What’s clear is that there’s no clear-cut favorite.

Dakota Ridge has a win over Legend, which beat Douglas County, which has beaten Columbine, which has topped Brighton, which owns a win over Grandview, which beat Eaglecrest — which, of course, beat Dakota Ridge.

The classification has become a snake eating its own tail.

Ultimately, what this regular season is proving is that it likely won’t even matter much who gets the No. 1 overall seed. Or the Nos. 8, 9 or 10, for that matter.

Because in order to reach the state tournament, and move on once there, “You’re going to have to battle,” Ozzello said.

    • Berthoud football is off to a 3-0 start, and ranked No. 10 in 3A this week. This may be a case of those special graduating classes that come through schools at one time or another. According to John Hall of the Berthoud Surveyor, this year’s junior class was a stellar bunch dating to their youth, including winning the Northern Colorado Championship.
    • Due to low numbers, Deer Trail will forfeit its game to Peetz this week. Deer Trail was down to five guys.

Turns out a win over a No. 1 team does help you move up to the top spot.

Arickaree/Woodlin, No. 2 in CHSAANow’s 6-man football poll last week, moved up to No. 1 this week following its 60-30 win over Stratton/Liberty on Friday night.

Coach David Saffer was expecting the move after the game on Friday.

"We’ve got a target on our backs," he told Colorado Preps’ Scoreboard Show. "We’ve just got to stay focused and keep working."

Saffer’s squad was the only new No. 1 team this week. Valor Christian (5A), Pine Creek (4A), Lutheran (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all held firm atop their respective rankings.

Valor held on to the top spot despite its loss to Chandler (Ariz.). But the Eagles are no longer a unanimous selection: they received 13 of the 18 first-place votes this week.

No. 2 Pomona, No. 3 Grandview and No. 4 Ralston Valley — which got three — also received first-place votes in 5A this week. Fairview rounds out the top five after bumping up one spot.

Regis Jesuit is sixth, Cherry Creek fell to seventh following its loss to Jordan (Utah), Overland moved up to eighth and Cherokee Trail fell to No. 9 after losing to Regis Jesuit. Doherty is the lone newcomer in 5A this week, and joins at No. 10.

Among the biggest movers this week was Fort Collins, which jumped up from No. 9 to No. 5 in the 4A poll following its win over Windsor last week.

The 4A ranking added Pueblo Centennial (No. 10), 3A added Berthoud (also No. 10) and St. Mary’s joined 2A (No. 9). In 1A, newcomer Rye is No. 10, and 6-man has two new teams this week: No. 9 Hanover and No. 10 Weldon Valley.

  • Dakota Ridge remains No. 1, but 5A softball rankings continue to change

Things remain crazy in Class 5A softball this season. For the first time this season, the No. 1 team in CHSAANow’s rankings stayed put, but five different teams received first-place votes.

It speaks to the season as a whole, where seemingly every week another ranked team is upset.

So while No. 1 Dakota Ridge actually extended the gap its has on No. 2 Brighton this week, things remained shaky behind them. Castle View moved from No. 8 to No. 3, Chaparral went from unranked to No. 5 and Fossil Ridge from No. 9 to No. 7.

Dakota Ridge (six), Brighton, Chaparral, Mountain Range (two) and Fossil Ridge all received first-place votes this week.

The 4A poll continued to be led by Frederick and added Pueblo West (No. 7) and Woodland Park (No. 10).

In 3A, Strasburg extended its stay at No. 1. Cedaredge (No. 7) and Rocky Ford (No. 10) both joined this week.
