GOLDEN — Dealing with finals week and an impending Wednesday flight to Florida for a holiday tournament was surely on the mind of Golden’s boys basketball team Tuesday night.

The Demons, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Class 4A CHSAANow.com poll, was able to keep their focus on the court in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory against 5A’s Fort Collins.

“It was a grinder for sure,” admitted Golden junior Ryan Blodgett who scored a game-high 12 points in the Demons’ 46-36 home victory to keep Golden (5-0 overall) undefeated on the season.

The Lambkins held a 26-24 lead through three quarters during the defensive struggle. Golden finally got its offense on track in the final 8 minutes. A key 9-0 run by the Demons during a three-minute stretch late in the game allowed Golden to pull away.

Senior Jason Johnson hit a key 3-pointer for the Demons. Senior Ryan Thistlewood pulled off his second 3-point play with a layup and foul.

“I wasn’t really trying to get the and-one. Honestly, I didn’t think I got fouled,” Thistlewood said. “It worked out and making the free throws always helps.”

Blodgett capped off the run with six straight points.

“We can score a lot of different ways, but we are only going to be good if our big guys (Blodgett, Cole Greff and Nick Capaul) score,” Golden coach John Anderson said. “I think Fort Collins did a good job of rushing our guys early. The key was the guards being able to penetrate and break them down to give our bigs some good scoring opportunities.”

Greff and Capaul each finished with eight points. Thistlewood finished with nine points.

Blodgett was held scoreless in the second and third quarters, along with picking up his third foul with 4:18 left in the third quarter.

“I was frustrated, but you have to keep your poise,” said Blodgett about his four points and three fouls heading to the fourth quarter. “You’ve got to slow down. You have to play smart and know what you can and can’t do.”

Blodgett dominated the fourth quarter with eight points, which included going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

“I think we had a lot more movement on offense,” Blodgett said of the Demons’ 22-point fourth quarter. “It took us that long to adjust to the tempo.”

Fort Collins (3-3) was led in scoring by seniors Brydon Campanella (nine points) and Andrew Pfaffinger (eight points). The Lambkins’ biggest lead was five points. An 11-0 run in the second quarter gave Fort Collins a 20-15 advantage.

“The tempo of the game favored Fort Collins,” Anderson said. “I talked about it during pregame that we have to be able to win ugly style games, high scoring games and games where we score in the 40s. Defense always gives us a chance to win.”

Golden heads to a much warmer climate Wednesday. The Demons will play in the 2014 Kreul Classic in Florida from Dec. 19-22. After the winter break Golden jumps into 4A Jeffco League play hosting Conifer on Jan. 7.

“It’s going to be a big test. It’s a business trip,” Anderson said. “We’ve got good momentum going and we want to keep it.”

Fort Collins stays on the road for a 2:30 p.m. non-league contest at Ponderosa in Parker on Saturday before winter break.

Montbello and Mountain Vista have joined this week’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A.

The Warriors are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week, while the Golden Eagles are No. 9. Both teams are 5-1.

That wasn’t the only change. Top-ranked Regis Jesuit and No. 2 ThunderRidge stayed put, but Overland moved up to No. 3 after a solid showing at an out-of-state tournament.

Chaparral moved into the top-5 following a big win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest on Friday. Chaparral is No. 4 this week, Eaglecrest is No. 5.

Cherry Creek bumped up three places to No. 6, Dakota Ridge also moved up to No. 8 and Rock Canyon remained ranked at No. 10.

In 4A, the changes continued. Pueblo Central spear-headed the movement with its jump to No. 3 this week, while Mead (No. 6), Palmer Ridge (No. 8) and Evergreen (No. 10) are all newcomers.

Colorado Springs Christian (3A) and Sanford (2A) both stayed put atop their respective rankings this week.

In 1A, top-ranked McClave lost to unranked Wiley last week. As a result, McClave dropped to No. 6 and Wiley is No. 10 in this week’s poll.

It also left a gap at the top, where Sangre de Cristo is now the No. 1 team. But voters were split, as a total of six teams received first-place votes this week.

Arickaree/Woodlin (No. 8) also joined the 1A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Regis Jesuit now No. 1 in 5A boys basketball rankings

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A boys basketball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

After last week’s big win, it was assumed that Regis Jesuit boys basketball would take over the top spot in Class 5A. Monday, the Raiders officially moved up.

Regis Jesuit received 15 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll this week, and had 159 overall points. This came on the heels of a 3-0 week to open the season, which included a win over preseason No. 1 Overland.

But Regis was far from the only mover. ThunderRidge also started its season 3-0, and has jumped from preseason No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The 5A poll also added four new teams: No. 7 Aurora Central, No. 8 Dakota Ridge, No. 9 Cherry Creek and No. 10 Rock Canyon.

Things changed in 4A, too. Longmont stayed put as the No. 1 team, but there are three new teams — led by No. 2 Golden, which had an impressive opening week, including wins over Vista PEAK and then-No. 6 D’Evelyn. Also joining are No. 6 Pueblo Central and No. 8 Air Academy.

In 3A, there’s another new No. 1 team. Colorado Springs Christian assumes the top spot there after Colorado Academy lost to Fossil Ridge’s JV team last week.

New to the 3A poll are Alamosa (No. 8) and Manitou Springs (No. 9).

The No. 1 teams stayed put in both 2A (Sanford) and 1A (McClave).

ARVADA — D’Evelyn’s boys soccer program is in uncharted territory.

The Jaguars, No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 4A boys’ soccer rankings, have never won a conference title. D’Evelyn (11-1, 7-0 in league) took one step closer to staking claim to the 4A Jeffco League championship Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over rival Golden.

“It’s really big for them,” D’Evelyn coach Paul Moline said of his team’s season so far that includes a current eight-game winning streak. “We’ve got a great group of seniors who have been around for four years. They were here for my first year here. For them to taste this is great for them too.”

Seniors Christian Denton and Dewitt Davis combined to produce D’Evelyn’s first goal Wednesday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. Denton streaked down the left side and fired a shot on Golden senior goalie Jasper Hughes. A diving Hughes saved Denton’s shot, but the rebound went to Davis who was able to put the rebound into the back of the net.

“Our game plan was when we got shot on goal we had to shoot low,” Denton said. “That goalie (Hughes) is good. Dewitt did a good job following and sliding one home.”

The Jaguars extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Sophomore Wesley Tedstrom ripped a shot past Hughes in the 44th minute. It was Tedstrom’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Golden (9-4, 5-2) put heavy pressure on D’Evelyn after the Jaguars took the two-goal lead. Senior Casey Crowley had a pair of free kicks just outside D’Evelyn’s goalie box. D’Evelyn senior goalie Chris Linden came up big with a four second-half saves.

It was the fifth game this season Linden hasn’t given up a goal.

“We trained all week that Chris (Linden) had to win everything in the air. He did it tonight,” Moline said. “He did a great job for us.”

    D'Evelyn Golden boys soccer

Linden is no stranger to playing in close games. D’Evelyn has eight wins by a one-goal margin this season. The Jaguars’ lone loss was to 5A Jeffco’s Chatfield back in early September.

“I just try to keep myself calm and composed,” Linden said of playing in several tight games. “I try not to get to wrapped up in the game.”

Golden senior Mark Seaholm, who rocketed a shot off the cross bar just before halftime, was robbed by Linden in the 70th minute on a diving save by the senior.

The loss moved the Demons a pair of games behind the Jaguars in the conference standings. Golden’s next game is 6 p.m. Friday back at NAAC against Conifer.

D’Evelyn plays at Lakewood Memorial Field at 6 p.m. Friday against Arvada. With only two conference games remaining for the Jaguars, that first league title is well within reach.

“We aren’t done yet. We want to finish it out. We’ve got Arvada and Green Mountain left,” Denton said. “Those are two games we should win, but we’ve got to come out and play hard. Then get ready for a deep playoff run.”

  • With numbers up, field hockey growing in programs around the state

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ield hockey, first sanctioned in 1997, has stayed constant with about 13 programs around the state. On the surface, the numbers haven’t changed.

The coaches know that’s not the truth.

Kent Denver coach Kathy James, a longtime presence in the sport and the head of the winningest program in state history, says interest in the sport has grown immensely.

    Kent Denver field hockey
Kent Denver has won nine of the 17 championships in field hockey’s sanctioned history. (Matt Daniels/MaxPreps)

“We don’t have a lack of girls,” James said. “Right now our biggest problem is that we have so many girls that want to play, that we end up having to turn some away. There are school programs that it’s not feasible for them to carry 25 girls on the team and so they have to cut some girls.

"Anybody who wants to play, we want them to have the opportunity.”

In the past six years, two club teams formed, the Denver Field Hockey Club and Club Lewy. James, a coach of the Denver Field Hockey Club, said the senior class’ team has fourteen girls from seven different schools this year.

“They are traveling together to compete at the U.S. Field Hockey Festival, which is the largest field hockey tournament in the world,” James said. “We are in the second highest pool, which means we’re competing against the top-10 clubs in the nation. Even though we’re small, the players are performing very well nationally.”

James added that the caliber of play has grown exponentially since the sport was first sanctioned.

“At that point, it was unheard of for people to get scholarships to D-I programs,” James said. “Now the festival team, we have four Division I athletes with a couple of them with scholarships. We’ve got four or five that are going to top-10 Division III programs.”

Level of play has been upped and numbers in the youth programs have grown. The Denver Field Hockey Club currently has about 50 girls between the age of five and eighth grade in it, while Colorado Springs-based Club Lewy has 20.

St. Mary’s Academy coach Sarah Jacobs, who played for James at Kent before enjoying a successful career at Johns Hopkins University, says the clubs have been huge.

“What’s wonderful now is that there’s full clubs and year-round opportunities to play as well as going around and traveling to tournaments,” Jacobs said. “I think that’s the number one thing that wasn’t included when I was around.”

Several of the high school teams have seen their numbers rise, as well. Last season, 591 girls participated around the state, up from 563 the year prior.

Golden coach Marissa Copan is a 2006 graduate of the school and was a member of the first hockey team it fielded. She played at Division III Goucher College in Maryland before returning to her home state to coach. Copan says the 2014 team is the largest in the school’s history with 30 members, but the district will not fund a junior varsity team.

“We are all technically just one big varsity team,” Copan said. “Every single year that I’ve been coaching, more people have been interested. We have girls from eleven different schools.

“There’s only a couple different girls that actually go to Golden, but since we are the only program in Jeffco, a lot of the girls that play lacrosse together or play soccer together, tell their friends and we’ve gotten a pretty big turnout.”

Denver East has long had enormous numbers for field hockey. In 2013, 97 girls tried out for the program. This year, 87 attended tryouts. East carries about 20 girls on each of its four teams.

The Angels’ coach, Elise Landau, another former Division III field hockey player, said East has been fortunate enough to be able to carry a large team, a luxury most don’t have.

“I think we get a lot of girls from different schools that transfer into East that have been playing field hockey in middle school,” Landau said. “We have close to 50 freshmen try out. We have a reputation for not cutting girls, until recently, so mostly the freshmen who try out will come in knowing that they can play the sport and have fun and try something new.”

Smoky Hill coach Natalie Foerster, a 2011 alum of the school who was a member of four semifinal teams in her playing days, says it’s rewarding being part of the Colorado field hockey community again. She has embraced being a first-year head coach in the growing sport.

“I love seeing where we started this season with how much progress we are making,” Foerster said. “Scores may not reflect it, but our girls are getting better and for me, that is a great feeling knowing that the girls are learning and really taking in what we are teaching them.”
