Palisade edged then-No. 1 Rifle last Friday after rallying from a 27-14 halftime deficit. Tuesday, Palisade is on top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 3A football poll.

The Bulldogs received all 13 first-place votes in moving up from No. 2 taking over at No. 1. Rifle dropped to third. Unbeaten Coronado, which has the most wins in the state at 7-0, is second.

The 3A ranking added Roosevelt (No. 10) this week.

In the 5A poll, Fairview has moved up to No. 2 from No. 3.

The Knights (5-0) are 5A’s lone remaining unbeaten team, and got one first-place vote. Valor Christian got the other 23 and remained atop the ranking.

Regis Jesuit is third this week, and is followed by No. 4 ThunderRidge and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Columbine rejoined the 5A ranking at sixth after its wild win over then-No. 2 Chatfield. Chatfield dropped to seventh this week.

Arapahoe is eighth, Pomona is ninth and Cherokee Trail fell to tenth after its loss to Cherry Creek last week.

Montrose, idle last week, remained in 4A’s No. 1 spot. Monarch moved up to No. 2, and Standley Lake is No. 3 this week. That ranking added Pueblo South at No. 8 and Durango at No. 10.

  • Football roundup: No. 8 Pine Creek storms back to beat No. 2 Falcon

The big showdown down South took a turn at halftime.

Trailing second-ranked Falcon 13-8, No. 8 Pine Creek scored the game’s final 21 points en route to a 29-13 win in Class 4A football.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and really came out and played well,” Pine Creek coach Todd Miller told ColoradoPreps.com’s Built Ford Tough Scoreboard Show on Friday night. “We got them off the field, our offense controlled the second half, and that was able to keep (Falcon star Kalen Ballage) from carrying the ball. We’ve got a chance of winning when he’s not carrying it.”

Ballage did finish the game with 196 yards and two scores.

“We kind of took a punch in our mouth in the first half — playing in about 40 mile-per-hour winds — and we were able to adjust,” Miller told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids just controlled the line of scrimmage and Scott Savage and James Fisher had space and they found creases, and we were able to get up on people. And Lavanson Coffey, our blocking fullback, just had a great game and we just kind of went back to old-fashioned football, running between the tackles and getting chunks of yardage and able to put some points on the board.”

Pine Creek is now 3-0 against 4A competition. The Eagles opened 1-2 against 5A foes Fountain-Fort Carson, Lakewood and Columbine.

“Going through Columbine, going through Lakewood and Fountain-Fort Carson prepared us for this (game against Falcon),” Miller said. “We had a couple of tough losses early, but we went through some hard practices and hard losses against tough, physical teams and they pay dividends on nights like tonight.”

The other monster game on Friday night ended with No. 2 Palisade nipping No. 1 Rifle in 3A, 28-27. The Bulldogs’ Levi Hoaglund found John Goff with 17 seconds remaining to secure the win.

“We had a group of guys that just persevered and hung with it,” Palisade coach Joe Ramunno told the Scoreboard Show.

    Palisade trailed 27-14 at halftime.

“That’s just kind of the nature of kids that we have here at Palisade,” Ramunno said. “It’s been that way for many, many years — you can go back to the 50s. They’re tough guys that just kind of hang in there. And we got out-played tonight. I really felt like we were outplayed for almost three-and-a-half quarters. Very fortunate to come out with a win, and they just have that mentality: there’s a lot of fight in that dog.”

At the 5A level, it was another week of destruction. No. 2 Chatfield lost to unranked Columbine in a wild game, No. 8 Cherry Creek topped No. 4 Cherokee Trail and Overland upset No. 7 Grandview, beating the Wolves for the first time in a very long time. Since 2004, Overland was 0-9 against Grandview and was outscored 103-336 over that span.

Mullen very nearly took down No. 10 Arapahoe, but the Warriors survived in overtime, 27-21. Arapahoe was up 21-0 at halftime.

When the dust cleared, it left Fairview as 5A’s lone remaining unbeaten team. The Knights (5-0) topped Arvada West 41-21 on Friday.

Elsewhere, it was No. 8 Paonia beating No. 10 Meeker in 1A despite six turnovers.

“I hope it was six. I don’t know, I kind of lost count,” Paonia coach Brent McRae told the Scoreboard show. “We just kind of huddled them up and said, ‘Here’s the deal, boys: this happens. This happens in life. And you can pick it up and finish and keep believing and keep fighting or you can lay down.’  They fought for each other.”

Also, 2A’s eighth-ranked Florence rebounded from last week’s loss to Manitou Springs to beat No. 5 Lamar.

“They knew what they had to do, what they had to clean up, and they had a pretty good week of practice and took a lot of pride in cleaning up what we needed to clean up,” Florence coach Jeremy Nix told the Scoreboard Show.

  • No. 8 Cherry Creek tops No. 4 Cherokee Trail in back-and-forth football affair

    (Logan Borgmann)
    (Logan Borgmann)

The anticipation of the game between Centennial League rivals Cherry Creek and Cherokee Trail was palpable in spite of the cold and wet weather that greeted both teams at Legacy Stadium.

Cherokee Trail entered the game ranked No. 4 and Cherry Creek ranked No. 8 in the latest CHSAANow.com poll.

The fans in attendance were not disappointed as the two inter-league foes went toe-to-toe for four quarters. And, if not for an errant extra point attempt, they might still be playing.

Cherry Creek left the stadium with a 28-27 win after the Cougars missed on the PAT that would have tied the game with just 29.3 seconds left. The kick went wide left and the Bruins improved to 5-1, while Cherokee Trail fell to 4-2. Creek now sits alone in first place in the Centennial Conference at 2-0.

Cherokee Trail, the Class 5A runners up last season, struck first as the Cougars’ Isaiah Lottie picked off and errant Cameron Brucker pass and raced 59 yards for a touchdown. Jerdan Daniels hit the extra point and the home team led 7-0. In Brucker’s defense, he was hit by a CT lineman just as he released the pass.

It didn’t take Cherry Creek long to get even in the game, as the Bruins used a combination of outside runs by Milo Hall and inside power running by DJ Luke to move down the field.  Hall evened things up when he burst through the left side for 25 yards. A Henry Lyon PAT made the score 7-7 with 6:42 left in the first.

Cherry Creek continued to put on the offensive pressure, primarily on the ground and moved ahead in the second quarterback as Luke dove into the end zone from a yard out. Another Lyon PAT gave the Bruins a 14-7 lead at 10:48.

The teams traded possessions for the next six minutes until the Cougars mounted a drive that Cameron Smith capped off with a 6-yard plunge. Daniels’ PAT tied the game at 14-14, where it stayed through halftime.

Turnovers looked to be the difference in the contest in the third when Cherokee Trail’s Aric Johnson fumbled on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. It didn’t take long for Cherry Creek to capitalize, as Luke scored from four yards out and the PAT made it 21-14 in favor of the visitors.

Another fumble by the Cougars gave the Bruins excellent field position again in the third, but after three stops by the CT defense, a 29-yard field goal attempt failed and Cherokee Trail got the ball back. The Cougars moved down the field and at 6:49 in the third, Smith ran in from the six, and Daniels’ PAT tied the game at 21-21.

Cherokee Trail threatened again in the third, but turned the ball over on an interception.

Cherry Creek’s Luke picked up his third touchdown of the game when he burst up the middle from 25 yards out. Lyon added his fourth PAT and Cherry Creek led 28-21 with 1:51 left in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter found both defenses standing up to the offensive challenges of their opponents and both teams had turnovers in the quarter. As the game see-sawed back and forth with first one team, then the other moving the ball a bit but then having to punt, it looked as if the Bruins could close out the game with just over three minutes remaining. Cherry Creek intercepted a Johnson pass with 3:14 and looked to run out the clock.

The Cougar defense stiffened yet again, forcing Cherry Creek into a passing situation. As the home team defense pressured Brucker, Evan White stepped in front of a Bruin receiver and intercepted the pass, giving Cherokee Trail one last shot at tying the game.

Several runs by Smith and a 26-yard Johnson to Keeland Thompson pass moved the Cougars down to the 11 when Smith ran around the left side for a score at the 40.2-second mark. But, a holding penalty brought the ball back to the 12. Undeterred, Smith pin balled off two Bruins on the next play and scored at the 29.3 mark. The extra point kick sailed wide left and Cherry Creek recovered CT’s onside kick attempt to hold on for the win.

For the Bruins, Hall ran 22 times for 68 yards and the one TD, while Luke had three scoring runs on 14 attempts for 80 yards. Joseph Parker added 17 yards on his one carry. Brucker was six of 12 for 60 yards, two interceptions and no TDs passing.  Parker had two receptions for 38 yards, Mikey McCauley had three catches for 11 yards, and Hall one for 12.

For the Cougars, Smith ran 21 times for 97 yards and three TDs, while Johnson carried 12 times for eight yards and Cameron Currington added three yards on two carries. Johnson completed 13 of 21 passes for 133 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Isaiah Kaiser had three receptions for 20 yards, while Currington had three for 10, Smith two for 27, Thompson three for 55 and White one for 13.

The two teams each had four turnovers, Cherry Creek with two in each half. All of Cherokee Trail’s came in the second half.

Cherry Creek plays Smoky Hill next, while Cherokee Trail goes up against Grandview. Both games are slated for October 11.

Fossil Ridge made a big move in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A volleyball poll.

  • Widespread changes as Valor Christian takes over atop 5A football poll

The weekend’s turmoil has bled over into CHSAANow.com’s football polls.

Though, when a total of 17 ranked teams lose in a week — including the No. 1s in classes 5A, 4A and 3A — it’s not hard to see change coming. So, yes, there are new teams atop 5A (Valor Christian), 4A (Montrose) and 3A (Rifle).

But the change didn’t only affect the top. In 5A, where three of the top four teams lost last week, that meant Chatfield, Fairview, Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit all made big jumps.

Valor Christian leads the 5A poll for the second time this season. The Eagles are 4-1, but unbeaten against Colorado competition this season, and received 21 of the 24 first-place votes.

Chatfield moved up to No. 2 from No. 5, Fairview went from No. 7 to No. 3 and Cherokee Trail moved into fourth from sixth. Regis Jesuit, which last week knocked off then-No. 1 ThunderRidge, went from No. 9 to No. 5.

ThunderRidge dropped to sixth, and is followed by Grandview and Cherry Creek.

The 5A poll added two new teams this week: No. 9 Pomona and No. 10 Arapahoe.

In 4A, Montrose takes over following its come-from-behind win over then-No. 1 Monarch. The Indians were a unanimous No. 1 pick, getting all 21 first-place votes.

Falcon is No. 2 this week, and Monarch dropped to No. 3. Loveland stayed at No. 4, Montbello moved up one place to round out the top-5.

Pueblo Centennial (No. 9) and Longmont (No. 10) are 4A’s newcomers this week.

Rifle takes over atop the 3A ranking following Silver Creek’s loss to Frederick. New to 3A this week are Mead (No. 7) and D’Evelyn (No. 10).

Brush continued to lead 2A’s poll, which added Bennett at No. 10.

Likewise, Buena Vista remained atop in 1A. That poll added Paonia (No. 8) and Jefferson (No. 9). Jefferson’s addition is especially noteworthy because the Saints were a combined 3-85 from 2004-12.

  • Other schools help restore Overland’s flooded baseball field

Valor Christian, Team Colorado, Cherokee Trail

On Sept. 12, floodwaters consumed Schenbeck Field located in Utah Park in Aurora and home of Overland High School baseball program.

The scene was grim. The scoreboard was completely engulfed in the 10-foot high water, as were the dugouts, batting cages, storage sheds and concession stand. Not a single part of the field was untouched.

When the water receded, it was clear to Overland’s head baseball coach, Michael Prichard, that he had another challenge to conquer. The force of the water had turned the benches in the dugouts upside down, displaced the bolted-down bleachers, engulfed the tractor used for field maintenance, washed rocks onto the playing field, flooded the concession stand, and drenched equipment and other team necessities.

The job would be daunting. Enter a new team of 60 baseball players, their coaches and parents from across the metropolitan Denver area. In consultation with coach Prichard, Allen Dyer (head coach of Cherokee Trail/Team Colorado) and Brian Bonn (Valor assistant coach) organized 50 individuals from their schools and organization, who worked alongside Overland baseball representatives on Sept. 21.

This group descended onto Schenbeck Field, with shovels, brooms, muscles and commitment to help a competitor in need. For three hours on a sunny Saturday, these volunteers worked diligently to bring the field back to life. On this day, they were all Trailblazers at heart.

Because of this team effort, Fall practices are possible, and in Spring, we’ll be able to welcome everyone to Overland’s field of dreams. Play ball!

  • Brush in charge of 2A football poll after beating Platte Valley

    (David Samples/lastingimagesbydave.com)
    (David Samples/lastingimagesbydave.com)

Brush took down former No. 1 Platte Valley on Friday. Monday, the Beetdiggers took its spot atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 2A football poll.

Brush, which won the game 28-10, was ranked second last week. It received all 10 first-place votes in the poll. Platte Valley dropped to third, behind Kent Denver.

The 2A poll added Faith Christian (No. 8) and Aspen (No. 10) this week.

In 5A, ThunderRide continued to lead the way and received 13 first-place votes to No. 2 Valor Christian’s 11. Columbine remained in third, and Ralston Valley stayed at No. 4.

Chatfield moved up from seventh to fifth, and is followed by No. 6 Cherokee Trail and No. 7 Fairview. Grandview is eighth, Regis Jesuit is ninth, and Cherry Creek rejoined the ranking at No. 10.

Monarch stayed atop 4A’s ranking, but there’s a new No. 2 team in that poll: Montrose, which moved up from third. It’s excellent timing, considering the two teams play Friday.

Falcon is third this week, followed by Loveland, Wheat Ridge and Montbello, which beat former No. 2 Denver South on Saturday. South dropped to No. 8.

Montbello and Wheat Ridge play Friday.

Pine Creek was the lone new team to the 4A poll.

The 3A ranking added No. 9 Delta and No. 10 Evergreen. Silver Creek remained at No. 1.

In 1A, Meeker (No. 10) was the lone newcomer.

There were no new teams to the 8-man poll, but 6-man added Briggsdale (No. 4).

  • Douglas County joins 5A football poll following big upset

    (Kay Livingstone)
Douglas County is ranked sixth in this week’s 5A poll. (Kay Livingstone)

Douglas County took down then-No. 3 Cherry Creek on Monday night. Tuesday afternoon, the Huskies find themselves ranked.

Douglas County jumped into this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in 5A at No. 6. It is the first time this season the Huskies have been ranked.

Cherry Creek, meanwhile, dropped all the way out in something of a surprise.

Cherokee Trail returned to the 5A ranking following a week on the outside looking in. The Cougars are eighth.

ThunderRidge held on to 5A’s top spot — but only narrowly. The Grizzles edged No. 2 Valor Christian by two overall points, despite beating then-No. 4 Grandview last week.

Columbine bumped up to third from fifth, and Ralston Valley went from sixth to fourth. Regis Jesuit rounds out the top five.

Chatfield is No. 7, Fairview is No. 9, and Grandview dropped from No. 4 to No. 10 following its loss to ThunderRidge.

Monarch continued to lead the 4A poll, which added Montbello for the first time this season, at ninth. Along with Denver South (No. 2 in 4A) and Denver West (No. 9 in 2A), it means Denver Public Schools has three ranked schools.

  • Lakewood joins 5A volleyball ranking at No. 6

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)
Grandview is ranked third in this week’s 5A poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Here comes Lakewood. The Tigers, who knocked off then-No. 1 Doherty as part of a 6-0 week last week, joined the CHSAANow.com volleyball poll.

Lakewood is now 6-3, ranked sixth, and even received one first-place vote this week.

Doherty dropped to second this week, and was replaced by Arapahoe atop the ranking.

Lewis-Palmer continued to lead the 4A ranking, which added Montrose (No. 8).

The 3A poll got a facelift, of sorts. Manitou Springs jumped from No. 4 to No. 1, and that ranking added Olathe (No. 8), Frontier Academy (No. 9) and Fort Lupton (No. 10).

Likewise, there is a new No. 1 team in the 2A ranking: Fowler. C.S. School (No. 6), Sangre de Cristo (No. 8) and Lyons (No. 9) all joined that ranking.

The 1A poll features two new teams in No. 9 La Veta and No. 10 Rocky Mountain Lutheran.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
