  • Cheyenne Mountain’s Hall repeats as 4A girls tennis champ

    PUEBLO — When No. 1 singles player Kalyssa Hall needed to be her best, she was Saturday.

    The Cheyenne Mountain sophomore cruised through a second-set tiebreaker against St. Mary’s Academy’ Alex Weil 6-3, 7-6 (2) to capture here second-consecutive Class 4A state title at the City Park Tennis Complex.

    “I just kept my head together and I didn’t get too nervous and I stayed relaxed,” the 5-foot-11 Hall said. “It’s so cool to be a two-time state champion. I’m so excited. It’s kind of surreal. I was especially relaxed in the tiebreaker. I decided I wasn’t going to go three sets. I loosened up and everything clicked and I pulled it out.”

    Hall also won state a year ago at No. 1 singles. Hall, who was unbeaten this season, is on pace to become Cheyenne Mountain’s only second four-time No. 1 singles state champion, joining Becky Varnum. Varnum, who finished her prep career with a 68-0 record, won her titles from 1995-98.

    “That’s my goal,” Hall, 16, said about being a four-timer.

    Veteran Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams praised Hall.

    “Kalyssa did a good job of not getting drawn into a total power game because (Weil) hit just as hard as Kalyssa did,” Adams said. “She did a good job of counter punching a little bit and she was willing to just roll the ball back in play. She took a little pace off on occasion and mixed it up with a couple of big serves here and there. It was a great match. Kalyssa was playing a little tight in the last game or two (of the second set) and she did a great job of just resettling herself and playing focused tennis in the tiebreaker and she didn’t give her any free points. That was the difference.”

    Hall jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker before claiming the 7-2 decision to win the match.

    Hall was joined atop the podium by her teammates Casey Ahrendsen and Ally Arenson (No. 1 doubles), Tory Lewis and Claire Dibble (No. 2 doubles) and Megan Dibble and Chelsey Geisz (No. 3 doubles). The Indians’ Daniella Adamczyk (No. 2 singles) lost in the finals 6-3, 6-3 to Kent Denver’s Delaney Nalen 6-3, 6-3.

    There was no drama in the team race.

    Cheyenne Mountain clinched its 19th state girls tennis team title Friday. It was also the Indians sixth Class 4A title in a row. More impressive is the team has no seniors.

    Cheyenne Mountain finished with 80 points, followed by St. Mary’s Academy (53), Kent Denver (50) and Niwot (42).

    “We are very fortunate because we are not losing anybody, but one thing we have learned is we can sit and rest on our laurels,” Adams said.

    Ahrendsen and Arenson, who are freshmen, defeated Niwot’s Lauren Richards and Maura Derr 6-4, 6-3.

    “I always dreamed about it (winning a state tennis tennis championship at Cheyenne Mountain), but it always seemed far in the future and I didn’t expect it,” Arenson said. “Casey and I have been playing tennis together forever and we were so excited we got to be partners together and to win state is just awesome. (Saturday) we lobbed a lot and really attacked the net and we just did a really good job and pulled through. I think I’ve recognized it happened, but I don’t think it has sunk in what a big deal and honor it is to win state as a freshman.”

    Megan Dibble and Geisz muscled past Kent Denver’s Lily Rogers-Masamori and Tempel Haifleigh 6-4, 6-2.

    With the victory, Geisz adds more state championship history to her family. Geisz’s mother, whose maiden name was Laurie Gardner, won No. 2 singles state championships in 1985 and ’86 at Cheyenne Mountain.

    Speaking of history, at No. 3 singles, Pueblo West’s Caitie McCarthy made some her own Saturday.

    The sophomore outlasted Kent Denver’s Maeve Kearney 7-6 (4), 6-3 to capture her first state tennis championship and the inaugural state tennis state championship – boy or girl – in the history of Pueblo West which opened in 1997.

    “Caitie came out and she had a lot of nerves and she also was playing against a left-handed player,” Pueblo West coach Sam Pisciotta said. “She came through it and figured out how to play against her and this was just a huge win for Caitie and our school.”

  • Nethercot leads Canon City’s upset of Pueblo West baseball

    PUEBLO — The Pueblo West baseball team seemed prime to write another chapter Tuesday in what was becoming a Cinderella South-Central League for the Cyclones.

    Canon City, however, had other ideas.

    Logan Nethercot collected four hits and pitchers Trey Owen and Dante Teigen stymied West’s offense, powering the Tigers to a 12-2 upset in an S-CL game at Andenucio Field.

    “This was a very big win for us,” said the senior Owen, who had solid outing, allowing just two runs before being relieved in the fourth inning. “We stayed focused and made the routine plays.”

    Canon City improved to 6-2 overall and more importantly put itself back in the league race with a 1-2 record. The Cyclones dropped to 5-4-1 overall and to 3-1 in league. West, with a roster full of seniors, advanced to its first Class 4A state title baseball game in school history a year ago before losing to Mountain View 7-6 in eight innings.

    “Our mission (Tuesday) was to get back in the S-CL race,” Ritter said. “If you go 0-3, you make it real tough on yourself in this league. The kids did what they had to do to come out and get a win. We have been finding ways to win and this was a new way for us to win. We haven’t scored a lot of runs this year and we got some timely hits and scored some runs.”

    Canon City lost to upstart Centennial (12-5) and South (7-0) in its first two S-CL games.

    Those losses were a distant memory against the Cyclones as the Tigers roared out to a 5-2 lead after two innings off of West starting pitcher Dallas Dwyer.

    “We needed to just bounce back and keep doing our thing and that’s what we were able to do,” said Nethercot, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior. “We played relaxed and we had a heck of a lot of fun (Tuesday).”

    The Tigers pounded out 15 hits off of Dwyer and relievers Cam Brinkley and Zack Maize.

    Trailing 5-2, the Cyclones had a grand opportunity to cut into the Tigers’ lead when they loaded the bases with no outs in fourth inning.

    West failed to seize the moment.

    The Cyclones’ Josh Drury was picked off of third base and the next two batters were retired in order.

    Wasted opportunities became a theme for the potent West offense. In the fifth and seventh frames, the Cyclones also loaded the bases and came up empty on the scoreboard.

    “We were just not ready to play at all,” veteran West coach Dan Sanchez said. “They threw out some slower pitchers and we hit better velocity, but we just have to make adjustments. We were just mentally flat and they beat us in all aspects of the game. We just deserved to get our butt kicked because we were not ready to play.”

    Tim Ritter, Canon’s coach, knows his squad needs to use the West victory for a springboard as it also plays S-CL games against Pueblo East (Thursday) and Pueblo Central (Saturday) this week.

    “We need to focus on East and then just take things one game at a time from there,” Ritter said. “We got ourselves back in the league mix.”

  • Bruner, Griffin lead Ponderosa boys lacrosse over Pueblo West

    PUEBLO – This wasn’t a statement game for the Ponderosa High School boys lacrosse team.

    Mustangs’ coach Pat Tierney, however, was satisfied with the final result.

    Blake Bruner scored six goals and Jack Griffin tacked on three more, powering the Mustangs to a 15-7 win over Pueblo West Thursday in a Pikes Peak League game at Cyclones Stadium.

    “This was a tough game,” Tierney said. “Sometimes you think you are just going to walk into an easy game and Pueblo West played well. Pueblo West is making strides, but I think our team overall played gutsy. Blake and Jack are great players and we do not have a chance to compete without great players.”

    Ponderosa improved to 4-1 overall with its third-consecutive win. The Mustangs’ only loss was 14-8 to Brighton High School out of Salt Lake City, Utah on March 13. Pueblo West dropped to 0-4 with the loss.

    “We just didn’t move the ball well,” second-year West coach Jason Pacheck said. “We are getting better, but we just have to move the ball. It comes down to passing the ball and we aren’t doing that right now.”

    The Mustangs set the tone for the game in the opening 24 minutes, taking a 10-4 halftime lead.

    “We just wanted to go out there and get better,” said Bruner, a senior, attacker. “We were moving the ball in the first half and working the fundamentals.”

    Griffin, a junior midfielder, echoed his teammate.

    “We were winning ground balls and face-offs, the easy things,” the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Griffin said.

    During the second half, the Cyclones tried to change the pace of the game, but could never cut into the Mustangs’ advantage.

    “They definitely became more physical because we had a lead on them,” said Bruner, who has signed to play lacrosse at Westminster College, an NCAA Division II school in Salt Lake City. “The game became a little bit more chippy, but we were able to handle it.”

    Although the season is still very young, Tierney, who is in his third season at the helm of Ponderosa, has bold expectations for his squad.

    “Winning state has to be our goal, absolutely,” said Tierney, whose team lost in the state quarterfinals to Air Academy last season. “I think we have a good team. We have talent. We going to face some issues like injuries and we are going to need some luck, and we are going to need to improve. We try and take something out, hopefully out of every game, and make ourselves better.”

    Bruner, a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder, knows the challenge his team faces to win state, but he’s embracing the challenge.

    “The state championship is our goal,” Bruner said. “I think we are very capable of reaching that goal. We are all good buddies on this team. We all get along and we all push each other to get better. It is a good group of players that we have. Whatever team we face, we just want to go out there and get the win.”

    They accomplished that mission Thursday and will look to do it again Friday as they face Grandview.
