THORNTON — After coming ever so close the previous two seasons to bringing home a coveted first place at the Class 5A state swimming and diving meet, ThunderRidge junior Annie Ochitwa has an air of determination in voice.

Ochitwa had posted the state’s fastest times in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles entering Friday’s preliminary round of the state meet at Veterans Memorial  Aquatics Center. She reinforced that during her two individual races to enter Saturday’s finals as the favorite in both events.

Ochitwa blazed to a time of 23.14 seconds in the 50, bettering her season best by 0.38s of a second.

An hour later, swimming in the 100 free prelims, she clocked a time of 50.64 seconds, better than six-tenths of a second faster than any other swimmer and more than a second faster than her previous best.

After finishing second at the state meet in the 50 as both a freshman and sophomore and second and third, respectively, in the 100, Ochitwa is bound and determined to get over the hurdle.

“It’s motivation for sure,” she said. “I think what really bothered me is I knew I could do it.”

That’s what got her out of bed for early morning workouts this season, what pushed her to put in the extra laps at practice.

She began her tapering routine on Monday. It undoubtedly helped her more mentally than physically.

“I think not thinking about swimming helped,” she said of having the week to focus on her academics and other interests.

As a result, Ochitwa entered the state meet not really knowing what to expect.

“I didn’t really know how I’d feel in the water,” she said.

Having posted the fastest prelim times Friday was another help.

“It’s another confidence booster she said.

But she’s far from resting on her laurels, although she plans no change from her normal preparation.

“I’ve got a routine and we’re going to stick with it,” she vowed.

“I’ll definitely do better (Saturday),” she said of predicting personal bests in both events in the finals.

Saturday’s diving prelims begin at 9 a.m., with the swimming finals set to begin at 2 p.m.

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Regis Jesuit’s top-ranked girls basketball team beat No. 8 ThunderRidge 54-32 on Friday. Kelsi Lidge and Jordan Molyneaux each had 10 points, and the Raiders led 36-14 at halftime.

  • Lots of changes to girls basketball rankings, including Lakewood at No. 3

This week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings look mighty different than they did a week ago.

No, there are no new No. 1 teams in any of the five classifications. However, there were a number of big movers.

Included, in 5A: Lakewood going from No. 6 to No. 3, Mountain Vista from No. 9 to No. 4 and Cherry Creek from No. 8 to No. 6.

Lakewood has now won eight games in a row. Mountain Vista, meanwhile, beat then-No. 5 ThunderRidge last week.

Rock Canyon shoulders at least part of the blame for the shakeup. The Jaguars upset then-No. 4 Highlands Ranch last week as they went 3-0, and are now ranked No. 10.

Highlands Ranch tumbled to No. 9 after losing its third-straight game. ThunderRidge dropped to No. 8.

Regis Jesuit stayed atop 5A, and Grandview remained at No. 2.

The week’s other big mover was Peak to Peak, which went from No. 9 to No. 4 in 3A. That ranking added three new teams this week: No. 7 Platte Valley, No. 8 Grand Valley and No. 10 Trinidad.

Other newcomers: No. 10 Palmer Ridge in 4A and No. 10 Heritage Christian in 2A.

Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Lutheran (2A) and Caliche (1A) all stay atop their respective polls this week.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • ThunderRidge upsets No. 2 Highlands Ranch girls basketball

    (Jordan Morey)
    (Jordan Morey)

HIGHLANDS RANCH — Four of the top-20 girls basketball teams in all of Colorado play in the Continental League.

“This league is unlike anything I have been apart of,” ThunderRidge coach Paula Krueger said Friday night. “I spent 17 years at the college level and I still don’t know if I’ve seen from the top, to the middle, to the bottom the kind of parody they have in this league. It’s a fun league to be a part of, and you need to show up everyday to play. There’s no days off.”

No. 8 ThunderRidge took down the second-ranked team in the state, Highlands Ranch (15-2, 4-1), 55-43 at home on Friday. Sophomore Alyssia Martinez scored a career-high 16 points for ThunderRidge.

“I would say we should be at the top, since we took down the second-ranked team,” Martinez said. “We can do a lot, and go far.”

This season, Highlands Ranch has averaged 60.4 points — the 19th most in the state. Those numbers put them on a 12-game winning streak that started on Dec. 7. Their 43 points against ThunderRidge was a season-low for a team that can put up big numbers.

“Defensively, we planned to keep them off balance a little big by switching things up,” Krueger said. “We went between the man and zone defenses throughout the game, and my kids did a heck of a job. They were fantastic.”

ThunderRidge never trailed Highlands Ranch. After finishing the first quarter up 11-10, the Grizzlies had a even better second as they led 33-24 behind three 3-pointers from Taylor Rusk. Highlands Ranch started the second-half strong by closing the deficit to 35-40 after three. However, Highlands Ranch couldn’t get past ThunderRidge’s stifling defense in the fourth, as they only scored eight points. Senior Taylor Reinier closed the game out with six of her eight points in the final quarter as ThunderRidge ran away with the lead.

“Tonight we proved what type of team we are,” Reinier said. “We proved that we can come out and play defense, hit big shots and play confident but calmly.”

Up next, the teams have polar-opposite schedules. Highlands Ranch will take on No. 1 Regis Jesuit (14-2, 4-0) on Feb. 5, and ThunderRidge will play Heritage (1-15, 0-4) on Feb. 4. ThunderRidge and Regis Jesuit, the top two teams in the Continental League, will face off on Feb. 14 at ThunderRidge High School. Regis Jesuit’s entire girls basketball attended the game between ThunderRidge and Highlands Ranch.

“This game gives us confidence especially after the losses to Denver East and Broomfield earlier this month,” Martinez said. “This is a tight division, and I can’t wait to play Regis.”

  • Overland’s Thomas picks CSU, Windsor’s Noller to Navy as commits keep rolling in

As Signing Day draws increasingly near, seniors continue to make their college decisions.

A host of Colorado kids made their decisions over the weekend, including Overland linebacker Tre Thomas, who committed to Colorado State, and Windsor lineman Trenton Noller, who committed to the Naval Academy.

Thomas is the fifth in-state senior to pick CSU this cycle, following Loveland athlete John Freismuth, Douglas County running back Trey Smith, Pomona lineman Zach Stefo and Valor Christian defensive back Marcus Wilson. He chose the Rams over offers from New Mexico, San Jose State, UTEP, Wyoming and Northern Colorado, according to his Rivals.com profile.

Thomas, 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, had 219 total tackles last season, a figure that led the state across all classifications. He also had four sacks and 16 hurries, along with two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and two blocked kicks.

“It’s a great school, a great community,” Thomas told GreenandGoldNews.com. “The players are good. I like the players, I like the coaches, and it’s in my home state, not too far from my family. So it seemed like the perfect fit for me.”

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Noller also had offers from Arizona, Army, Georgia Tech, New Mexico State, Wyoming and Northern Colorado, according to Rivals.com. He announced his commitment over Twitter on Sunday morning:

“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders,” Noller told the Fort Collins Coloradoan. “I love it here. They told me straight up that it will be hard, but I can get through it, and it will be more rewarding than if I go anywhere else.”

Additionally, Fairview lineman Connor Spencer announced his commitment to San Diego, an FCS program.

With the three new commits, Colorado now has 35 players committed to Division I football programs — 25 to FBS schools and 10 to FCS. The 35 total is the most since the class of 2008, according to a search of the Rivals.com database. That year, the state produced 38 Division I recruits.

The 25 FBS commits are also the most since 2008, when the state had 33.

A few locals also declared their intention to head to Division II programs.

Included are Legend wide receiver/defensive back Elijah Cherrington (CSU-Pueblo), Smoky Hill quarterback Trent Clay (Black Hills State), ThunderRidge wide receiver Mark Hopper (Colorado School of Mines), Poudre quarterback Cody Limmer (Colorado School of Mines), Clear Creek wide receiver/defensive back Tevin Lucas (Sioux Falls), Lakewood quarterback Casey Nicholls (Sioux Falls), Dakota Ridge lineman Brant Seeley (Adams State), and Regis Jesuit linebacker Quinn Vandekoppel (CSU-Pueblo).

A full list of football commits can be found here.

Elsehwere, Monarch’s Parker Sitton committed to Arkansas State for track, and Legend’s Peyton Remy committed to New Mexico for baseball. Remy’s commitment means Colorado now has 29 Division I baseball recruits this class.

Mountain Vista has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball ranking in 5A.

The Golden Eagles, who have won 11 straight games, toppled then-No. 6 Rock Canyon as part of a 3-0 week last week. They are now ranked No. 9.

Aside from Rock Canyon, ranked teams in 5A went 20-0 last week. Regis Jesuit held on to the top spot in that poll.

However, there is a new team in the 2A poll, where Lutheran takes over for Yuma. The Lions moved up from No. 2 after Yuma lost to then-No. 4 Akron on Saturday. Lutheran also went 2-0 last week.

Akron moved up to No. 2 this week, while Yuma dropped to No. 4. Heritage Christian was the lone newcomer in 2A, joining at No. 10.

The other No. 1 teams stayed put. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Caliche (1A).

The 3A poll added No. 10 Brush, while 1A added No. 7 Briggsdale and No. 9 South Baca.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
