The Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings has some fresh faces with the release of this week’s rankings, and it’s happening at the right time.

Pueblo West comes into the poll at No. 9 and Skyline is right behind them at No. 10.

With a 28-0 win over Niwot on Friday, the Falcons remain undefeated on the year and received enough support from the voters to be regarded as a top-10 team.

The Cyclones have won three-straight games after surrendering their first two of the season. Wins against Pueblo South and Dakota Ridge got them votes, but it was the  57-20 win over Coronado on Saturday that pushed them into the poll.

Denver South hung on to the top spot in 4A, taking 16 of 17 first-place votes.

Coming off a bye, Pomona hung on to the No. 1 position in 5A, but Mullen was able to jump one spot to No. 2.

Fairview (No. 6) and Doherty (No. 9) also jumped one spot from a week ago. Despite coming up short against No. 8 Valor Christian last Thursday, Cherry Creek stayed in the rankings at No. 10 meaning no new teams broke into the 5A rankings.

    Discovery Canyon Vista Ridge football
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Discovery Canyon made a statement against Vista Ridge Friday night and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 3A.

After snagging a couple of first-place votes, Lewis-Palmer jumped to No. 3, one spot above where they were a week ago.

Longmont made the big 3A jump of the week, leaping three spots to come in at No. 7.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings this week.

In 2A, both La Junta (No. 1) and The Classical Academy (No. 2) maintained their spots after a thrilling showdown Friday night that saw the Tigers come away with the late win.

La Junta’s schedule does not get any easier this week as they host Manitou Springs, which jumped to No. 4 after a homecoming win over Lamar.

At No. 10, sterling is the only new team to break into the 2A poll.

Strasburg hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 1A as all 10 teams from last week’s rankings remained in the this week’s poll.

Peyton made the big jump of the week to come in at No. 7, two spots better than they were previously ranked.

In 8-man, Sargent took five of 13 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot.

Merino made a three-spot leap to come in at No. 4.

There were no new teams in the 8-man rankings.

Still undefeated, Fleming holds strong as the No. 1 team in 6-man with Kit Carson hanging tight at No. 2.

Cotopaxi (No. 5) and Peetz (No. 6) each jumped three spots from last week’s rankings.

At No. 10, Genoa-Hugo is the only new team in the 6-man rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

To the victors go the spoils.

After wins last week, Denver South now sits atop the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings while La Junta takes the top spot in the 2A poll.

Discovery Canyon also jumps to No. 1 in the 3A poll despite previous No. 1 Fort Morgan not losing this week. Strasburg had a similar fortune this week, taking the No. 1 spot in 1A despite Paonia winning this weekend.

The Rebels got a hard-fought win over Heritage on Saturday and with Chatfield’s loss to Columbine earlier in the week, they traded places this week in the rankings.

Pine Creek (No. 4) and Ponderosa (No. 7) each jumped two spots from last week’s poll.

At No. 10, Mesa Ridge is the only new team in the 4A rankings.

Thanks to a huge win over Longmont, Mead arrives to the 3A poll as the only newcomer, taking the No. 9 spot this week.

Meeker made a two-spot jump this week, landing at No. 5.

Peyton was the only new team to jump into the 1A poll, landing at No. 9.

The top seven teams overall from last week’s rankings held their position this week.

At No. 9 and 10 respectively, Pikes Peak Christian and Soroco are the two new teams in the 8-man poll.

Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 6-man with Kit Carson holding firm at No. 2.

Fort Morgan is the new No. 1 team in 3A football. (Brandon Boles/Fort Morgan Times)

There is a new top dog in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Following a loss to Discovery Canyon — which lands at No. 2 this week — Pueblo East fell out of the No. 1 spot and Fort Morgan took its place.

No new teams made their way into the 3A rankings, but there was plenty of movement as Lewis-Palmer (No. 5), Palisade (No. 6) and Silver Creek (No. 7) all climbed two spots.

The 1A rankings also saw a new team land in the No. 1 spot as Paonia now sits atop the poll. The Eagles topped Ridge View Academy to move to 3-0 and Buena Vista fell out of the top spot with a 16-8 loss to Platte Canyon.

The Demons come in at No. 6 this week.

Burlington is the only newcomer to the 1A poll, coming in at No. 10 this week.

A 57-0 win over Fowler helped Sargent move into the top spot in the 8-man poll with former No. 1 Sedgwick County falling to No. 3.

That was the only big change in 8-man as there were no newcomer to those rankings.

In 5A, Pomona remains and No. 1 with Mullen still on its heels at No. 2.

Only one new team jumped into the 5A rankings this week as Legend breaks in at No. 10.

Chatfield holds a firm grip on the No. 1 spot in 4A, taking 14 of 17 first-place votes.

With a win over Greeley Central on Saturday, Loveland jumped three spots to land at No. 3. Vista Ridge also climbed three spots after an impressive 24-22 win over Dakota Ridge.

With a showdown looming with No. 9 Ponderosa, Rampart is new to the 4A rankings this week. The Rams round out the rankings at No. 10.

Kent Denver holds on to the No. 1 ranking in 2A this week as La Junta makes the one-spot jump to No. 2. The Sun Devils and Tigers play each other on Friday night.

The Classical Academy jumps two spots to land at No. 3, just two weeks ahead of their league-opener against La Junta.

Manitou Springs jumps into the 2A rankings at No. 8. Through three games, the undefeated Mustangs have already matched their win total from a year ago.

Fleming got eight of 12 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot in the 6-man poll.

Cheyenne Wells made the big jump of the week, moving up two spots to land at No. 5.

At No. 10, North Park is the only new team to the 6-man rankings.

The Raptors got what proved to be the winning touchdown from Jalen Mergerson with 5:34 remaining. Quetin Bowen then had a huge interception with 2:12 left to seal things.

This marks the first time Eaglecrest has started 3-0 since the 2006 season.

The Wizards mishandled two punts which were recovered by Broomfield, and the Eagles also scored on a fumble recovery.

Windsor actually led 7-0 early, but Broomfield scored 19 unanswered points to lead 19-7 at halftime.

    3A: (4) Discovery Canyon 41, (1) Pueblo East 26

Discovery Canyon handled the defending champs, and handed the Eagles their first loss in 15 games. That streak was tied for the longest in the state.

“I was really happy with the way the guys played, and I thought they really stepped up to the challenge,” Thunder coach Shawn Mitchell told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show.

Josh Tomjack had two touchdowns for the Thunder, while Trevor Ivy also scored.

Fountain-Fort Carson kicked a field goal in overtime to secure the win.

The two teams, who hadn’t played since 2013, were tied at 7 at halftime, and it stayed that way in the second half.

Fountain-Fort Carson got the ball first in overtime, and settled for a field goal. Pine Creek didn’t score when it got the ball.

    3A: (2) Fort Morgan 45, (6) Holy Family 28

McBride had three receiving scores from Dalyn Knapp, and he also added an interception return for a score.

    2A: (5) The Classical Academy 42, (4) D’Evelyn 14

The Titans handled the Jaguars in this top-5 showdown.

It was just 14-7 at halftime, but The Classical Academy pushed it to 28-7 after three quarters, and then 35-7 early in the fourth.

“They’re a good team, and we’re going to see them in November,” coach David Bervig told the Scoreboard Show of D’Evelyn.

Austin Weingart and Rhys Ryba each had two touchdowns for the Titans.

TCA also gave star kicker Anders Carlson a shot at breaking the state field goal record with a 71-yard attempt, but he was short.

“He is a weapon, and last year we had four (field goals) over 50 (yards) in key games, so I’m not worried about kicking a 60-yarder,” Bervig said. “At 60, I think he can make those. … He’s a great weapon to have. He’s a stud.”

  • Football rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
Pomona is the new No. 1 team in 5A football. (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Three new schools are staking their claim as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes of this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Pomona (Class 5A), Kent Denver (2A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all come in as the top teams in the polls after sitting lower in the preseason rankings.

Pomona moves into the top spot after beating Mullen 28-21 in Zero Week. The Panthers lost at Glynn Academy (Ga.) Friday, but that did not affect their standing to Colorado voters.

Mullen jumps one spot to No. 2 after an impressive win over Valor Christian and Grandview lands at No. 3 after a 30-7 win over Chaparral.

After a 0-2 start, defending 5A champion Valor Christian slipped to No. 6.

Windsor remains atop the 4A rankings after a 33-21 win over Vista Ridge to start the season. The Wizards will have a top-10 match-up this week against No. 7 Pine Creek, who lost to No. 3 Chatfield on Friday.

The Chargers are new to the rankings this week along with Pueblo South (No. 6) and Monarch (No. 8).

After an impressive win over Longmont to start its season, defending 3A champion Pueblo East remains at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

Fort Morgan jumps one spot to No. 2 and Discovery Canyon lands at No. 3 this week.

A 1-1 start has Durango as the lone newcomer to the 3A poll. The Demons come in at No. 10.

Along with win No. 306, Kent Denver coach Scott Yates is also the man behind the Sun Devils team that now resides at the top of the 2A rankings.

Resurrection Christian is sitting right behind them at No. 2, jumping a staggering six spots this week. With four first-place votes, La Junta is sitting firmly at No. 3.

Eaton (No. 9) and Moffat County (No. 10) are the two teams who join the rankings for the first time this season.

In 1A, Buena Vista still holds the No. 1 spot, but Paonia continues to nip on the Demons’ heels as they sit at No. 2 and are only two points behind the defending champs.

Strasburg (No. 3) and Meeker (No. 7) are the 1A teams that made the biggest from the preseason rankings, each improving their position by three spots.

At No. 9, Rye is the only newcomer to the 1A poll.

With six of the 10 first-place votes cast this week, Dayspring Christian is the new No. 1 in the 8-man rankings.

Sargent takes over the No. 2 spot and despite starting 2-0, Sedgwick County drops two spots to No. 3.

Fresh behind getting Chris Brown his 307th career win, West Grand breaks into the 8-man polls at No. 8. Haxtun (No. 9) and Holly (No. 10) are also new to the rankings this week.

Kit Carson hangs on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 30-22 win over Pawnee this weekend.

La Veta (No. 3) and Cotopaxi (No. 7) each jumped three spots this week.

Sierra Grande (No. 6) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 6-man poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football preview: La Junta returns strong senior class with championship ambitions

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

A 47-7 loss in the Class 2A state semifinals is not the way the La Junta Tigers envisioned ending their season.

Especially considering that in the 11 games prior to their loss at the hands of eventual state champion, Bayfield, the Tigers surrendered less than six points per game.

But with 11 starters returning on the defensive side of the ball, La Junta is looking to put its stamp on the 2016 season and reach heights that will they hope will include a state title trophy at the end of the year.

“We have to play great defense,” coach Clint Buderus said. “That’s a big emphasis for us and if we can stay in a game and keep it close, that’s all we can ask for.”

It’s not just the defense that will provide the experience that the Tigers will need to overcome last year’s loss. For the last two seasons, La Junta has steadily become a better team and the senior class as a whole has had its eyes on this season as one that can be truly special.

“The first time we went (to the playoffs) three years ago, these kids were all sophomores and they were all playing,” Buderus said. “This class has been together for a long time. The majority of them got a taste of it and they’re excited to get going again.”

But excited doesn’t quite cover the range of feelings going through this senior class. The players were dominant in the regular season and for their first two playoff games.

With Bayfield proving to be just as good as advertised, the Tigers know that they have something to prove as the regular season prepares to kick-off.

“Our mentality right now is to ficus on one game at a time,” running back/linebacker Dax Bender said. “We know our expectations and we just need to be solid throughout the year.”

Bender was one of the key two-way players for the Tigers a year ago, running for over 500 yards while registering six turnovers on the defensive end.

He’ll be just one La Junta player amongst a strong senior class that Buderus will lean on for the Tigers.

“I really think we have a 12 leaders,” Buderus said. “I really do. Our kids are so close. They do everything together, they spend all their time together. It’s good to have a leader (like Bender) to put everybody on his back and take you.”

And that’s exactly what he plans on doing. The Tigers have been without a state football championship since 1958 and there is no doubt in their mind that they have the talent on the field this season to end that streak.

“We’ve been working really hard since our freshman year and we have a lot of varsity experience,” Bender said. “That’s the plan (to bring home a title) but we have to play really hard every game. We can’t let anyone undercut us.”

And if anything, that disappointing loss to Bayfield will only serve as firewood for La Junta. Buderus knows that that the season ending the way it did will only provide fruitful longterm results.

“The kids were upset,” Buderus said. “But I think it was good for us to get there. Obviously we wanted to get the win, but I don’t think the outcome should’ve been what it was. I think we were a little in the spotlight and we’d never been there. I think you need to knock on the door before you can kick it in.”
