Grandview is the No. 1 team in the 5A preseason girls soccer rankings. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

The defending girls soccer champions will go into the 2016 season still standing tall.

Grandview, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Academy and Vail Mountain will start the season ranked No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com girls soccer polls.

Grandview stormed through the Class 5A state tournament last year, shutting out their opponents every game en route to the state title.

The Wolves too eight of the 11 first-place votes, with the other three going to Broomfield. The Eagles will start the season as the No. 2 team in the state.

Seven of the eight teams from last year’s state quarterfinals all debuted in this year’s preseason rankings.

Cheyenne Mountain capped off the 2015 season with their third-straight 4A state championship. They narrowly edged Lewis-Palmer in the title game.

The Rangers come in at No. 2 to start the year, getting four first-place votes, one shy of the number that the Indians received.

Colorado Academy earned the top ranking in 3A after winning the second of its back-to-back championships in 2015.

Kent Denver came in right behind the Mustangs, taking three first-place votes in the process.

The Academy (No. 3) was the only other team to take a first-place vote.

In 2A, Vail Mountain came away with the classification’s first state title and according to the voters, is the favorite to take the championship this season. They received five first-place votes while the Dawson School (No. 2) took one.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

  • Pott leads No. 6 Faith Christian boys soccer over No. 10 Frontier Academy

    (Andre Lyseight/CHSAANow.com)
    (Andre Lyseight/CHSAANow.com)

ARVADA — Garret Pott scored two unanswered goals in the second half to lift Faith Christian boys soccer over Frontier Academy on Tuesday.

The Eagles, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A this week, beat No. 10 Frontier Academy 2-1.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Pott took over the game for Faith Christian.

Pott was clearly the fastest player on the field and displayed his speed throughout the whole game. On his first goal he sped pass Wolverine defenders all the way from midfield, leading to a powerful goal which tied the game at 1.

Pott’s second goal occurred after Frontier Academy goalkeeper Hunter Umholtz was forced to move up and block a shot, leaving the goal open for Pott to kick a long 30-yard goal.

“Once again, can’t say enough about Garret Pott and how incredible of a talent he is individually,” said Eagles assistant coach John Doody. “When you have a player of the caliber you always have a chance even when you’re not at your best.”

Frontier Academy strung together nice passes and controlled the ball throughout the first half. Wolverines forward Carlos Vargos had a few early attempts but didn’t finish.

However, Vargos was finally able to score after a collision between the Faith Christian goalkeeper and another player set him up for an easy goal for the 1-0 lead.

After Pott’s two goals, Faith Christian was able to control the ball the rest of the game and prevent Frontier Academy from gaining any type of momentum.

Wolverines coach Kennan Reinert was disappointed in how his team played in second half.

“I thought we had a lot of intensity and a lot of passing, and then we score and we lose that edge and start to coast as a team,” Reinert said.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Four new teams join 5A poll

Niwot is up to No. 5 in 3A boys soccer. (Kai Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Despite the top teams remaining the same in the Class 5A, 4A and 3A CHSAANow.com soccer polls, there was plenty of changes from last week.

Of the four new teams who joined the 5A rankings, two of them fell out of the polls just last week. Arvada West (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 9) rejoin the top 10 after playing their way out of last week’s rankings. They’re joined by Legacy (No. 8) and Rocky Mountain (No. 10), who make their first appearance in the polls this season.

ThunderRidge also made a significant jump this season, going from No. 9 to No. 6 after going 2-0 last week.

Broomfield remained No. 1 in 5A.

The 10 teams from last week’s 4A polls remained the same, but Valor Christian did jump from No. 8 to No. 4. Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the 4A ranking.

Pagosa Springs, which was unranked in the preseason, has made the jump to No. 3 in 3A this week. Salida climbs back into the polls at No. 5 after falling out of the top 10 last week. Aurora West lands at No. 8 as the other newcomer in 3A.

Kent Denver stayed on top of the 3A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain new No. 1 in 4A

Cheyenne Mountain boys soccer opened the season with a big win last week, and finds itself ranked No. 1 in Class 4A this week.

Cheyenne Mountain beat then-No. 2 The Classical Academy 3-2 in a season opener. Coupled with former No. 1 Air Academy’s loss to Evergreen, Cheyenne Mountain took over.

Evergreen, No. 8 in the preseason, moved up to No. 2 in the 4A poll, which is conducted by CHSAANow.com. The Classical Academy is No. 3, and Littleton made a big jump from No. 7 to No. 4.

Denver West, unranked in the preseason, is No. 5.

Niwot held steady at No. 6, Air Academy dropped to No. 7 and newcomer Valor Christian is No. 8. Ponderosa is No. 9 and another newcomer, Greeley West, rounds out the ranking.

Things were pretty crazy in the 5A ranking, which added six new teams. Yes, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams — Broomfield and Boulder — held their respective spots, but that was just about it.

    (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)
Fort Collins was one of six new teams to the 5A poll, checking in at No. 3. (Aislyn Carrillo/CHSAANow.com)

Joining the ranking were No. 3 Fort Collins, No. 5 Rangeview, No. 7 George Washington, No. 8 Denver East, No. 9 ThunderRidge and No. 10 Far Northeast (formerly Montbello). Fairview (No. 4) and Cherry Creek (No. 6) were the other holdovers from the preseason.

The 3A poll also had similar shakeup. Four new teams joined: No. 4 KIPP, No. 8 Pagosa Springs, No. 9 Colorado Springs Christian and No. 10 Denver Science & Tech Stapleton.

Kent Denver retained the No. 1 spot in that poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.
