  • Aurora Public Schools will combine its boys lacrosse teams in 2017

There will only be one Aurora Public Schools boys lacrosse team starting next season, as the school district has opted to combine its two programs.

District athletic director Mike Krueger informed the CHSAA office of the change on Tuesday.

APS recently has fielded two teams, one at Gateway and one at Rangeview. For at least the next two-year cycle — which includes the 2017 and 2018 boys lacrosse seasons — those programs will combine and be housed at Rangeview.

Krueger cited a decrease in participation, as well as “an effort to create a program that allows for the development of younger players,” in combining the two programs.

The change means that boys lacrosse will now have 76 teams — a split of 41 in 5A and 35 in 4A. The South Suburban League, of which Gateway and Rangeview both were set to play in, will have seven teams in 2017 and 2018.

Rangeview boys lacrosse finished 1-14 in Class 5A last season, while Gateway was 1-12, also in 5A.

Rangeview also has a girls lacrosse program.

  • Gateway’s Dylan Paulsen has stolen 30 bases so far this season

    (Courtesy of Gateway HS)
Dylan Paulsen and Gateway coach Brian Dossey. (Courtesy of Gateway HS)

Dylan Paulsen stole his 30th base of the season on Wednesday, a number that is among the highest totals of any Class 5A player in recent seasons.

Paulsen’s figure ranks second among 5A players dating back to 2008, just behind Highlands Ranch grad Nick Shumpert, who stole 33 last season. His figure is ahead of Prairie View’s Caleb Dameron, who stole 24 in 2014.

No official state record book exists for CHSAA baseball — yet, it is being worked on.

This season, Paulsen has had 11 games in which he has stolen at last two bases. His season high came against Westminster on Wednesday, when he swiped four bases.

Beyond that, Paulsen has been thrown out while attempting to steal just twice, making him 30-of-32 in attempts this season. The 30 steals are a Gateway record.

Paulsen is hitting .404 with two home runs and 14 RBIs this season.

Gateway finishes its regular season against Far Northeast on Saturday.

Editor’s note: This story was updated on Friday afternoon after Gateway sent updated stat totals.

  • Cherokee Trail girls basketball tops Gateway to advance in 5A playoffs

    Cherokee Trail Gateway girls basketball
    (Stephen Priest/CHSAANow.com)

AURORA — After a tough loss to Arapahoe to close out the regular season, Cherokee Trail coach Jerry Austin and his veteran Cougar squad knew they had to come into Tuesday’s game against Gateway focused and ready to send a message.

After a close first half that saw both teams start off hot shooting the basketball, particularly from three-point land, the Cougars were eventually able to gain control of the game and finish strong, earning a 72-47 win over the Olympians to advance in the Class 5A state playoffs.

“Friday’s loss was actually really hard on us so we knew we had to come in and dominate the game,” Cherokee Trail senior Jaleesa Avery said.

Avery helped set the pace for the Cougars (15-9 overall) with 15 points on the night.

The Olympians (10-14) played inspired basketball in the first half, putting pressure on Cherokee Trail to perform and making the game close.

Part of the reason the game was close early on was due to the incredible shooting display put on by Gateway’s leading scorer for the year in senior Carmen Ramey, who finished the night with a game-high 21 points.

“In the first half, Ramey hit some great shots, having 19 points in the first half which made a big difference in the game,” Austin said. “And we figured in the second half, she wasn’t going to shoot that well and we could get back into control of the game.”

Ramey’s 19-point first half was largely created by her scoring outburst in the second quarter as she was responsible for eight points (six coming from long range) on her team’s 9-3 scoring run to start the second period; in addition, to producing 14 points overall in the quarter.

Austin’s halftime prediction came to fruition as Ramey went cold the rest of the game, only scoring two more points the rest of the way.

“We started off a little slow, but we knew this was a team we could get past and it wasn’t anything that we couldn’t handle,” junior Taryn Foxen said. “We just had to make sure we came out harder in the second half and work together as a team.”

And that they did as Cherokee Trail managed to blow open the game in the second half, not only by eliminating Ramey’s impact, but through an abundance of turnovers and domination on the boards to allow for second and third chances offensively for the Cougars.

Foxen led the Cougars’ scoring effort with 19 points.

By the fourth quarter, the game became a track meet for Cherokee Trail as almost every possession they were on defense progressed into a forced error by Gateway allowing the Cougars to get out into transition for an easy two.

After disposing of the Olympians to begin their tournament run, Cherokee Trail remains focused on the next task at hand, which is Pine Creek in a second round game Friday. Yet, that isn’t to say that this Cougar team doesn’t have their sights set on the bigger picture which is a 5A state title.

“(If we) continue to play hard and as a team and if we don’t’ give up on each other while going at team’s the way we have been all year, we have a chance,” Avery said.

But before they can achieve such a satisfying accomplishment, they must take care of business against Pine Creek and coach Austin knows the type of problem the Spartans present.

“They’re a good basketball team,” Austin said. “They press and they do a lot of good things”

  • Football roundup: No. 7 Arapahoe escapes Gateway’s upset bid with goal-line stand

Arapahoe made a stop at the goal-line on the final play of the game to hold off an upset bid from Gateway and win 28-24.

The Warriors, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, trailed nearly the whole game but rallied to take the lead late in the fourth quarter and then held on to keep their perfect record intact. They are now 6-0 for the first time since 2005.

Nick Thompson scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run with 2:52 to play.

Gateway jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, and was up 24-14 at the break.

But Arapahoe’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, and the offense slowly chipped away.

Harper Silliman kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired to lift the seventh-ranked Eagles (5-1) to their best win of the season so far.

It turns out Silliman is Dakota Ridge’s backup kicker. The starter was out with a concussion.

“Harper had made two extra points earlier in the game, and missed a field goal earlier in the game. And I told him, ‘You’re going to be a hero tonight. Keep your head in there. You’re going to have a chance to win it,’” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It was a 44-yard field goal, and it probably went 44-and-a-quarter yards.

“We really felt at that point (of the final attempt) that we were either going to win it or we were going to go to overtime, and so we let him give it a shot. He came through. Big-time, clutch kick for us.”

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Ponderosa grabbed a 24-19 lead at halftime. The lead grew to 27-17, but Dakota Ridge answered with a rushing touchdown from Jeremy Lujan to make it 27-24 with 4:38 to go in the third quarter. A field goal late in the third quarter tied the game.

The teams were scoreless until the fourth quarter — until Silliman’s kick.

Lujan had four touchdowns for Dakota Ridge.

    3A: (9) Lewis-Palmer 63, Canon City 48

The Rangers won a wild one with all kinds of offense.

The two teams combined for 1,184 yards of total offense — the 11th-highest combined total in a single game — and dotted the record book with new entries. Ultimately, Lewis-Palmer’s ground attack won out over Canon City’s passing offense.

Lewis-Palmer rushed for 547 yards and nine touchdowns as a team. Of that, Nick Pavlik had 404 yards and seven touchdowns. The seven TDs are tied for the fifth-most in state history, while the 404 yards are No. 14 all-time.

There’s more: Canon City quarterback Luke Nethercot tied the state record, set just last week against Lewis-Palmer, with 41 completions on 50 attempts. He threw for 461 yards and six touchdowns.

    Lewis-Palmer is now 5-1.

    1A: (3) Paonia 34, (9) Meeker 30

Panoia pulled out the close win to move to 5-1.

“It was a fun night here in Paonia. They had a great gameplan ready for us, and it worked,” Paonia coach Brent McRae told the Scoreboard Show. “It was back-and-forth, and you just kind of had to hold your breath there are the end.”

    2A: (4) Platte Valley 37, (5) Brush 0

Platte Valley jumped out to a 29-0 halftime lead, and cruised from there. The Broncos are now 5-1, and have won five in a row.

“When you lose some of the skill kids we did in the past, some explosive ones, we had to replace them,” Platte Valley coach Troy Hoffman told the Scoreboard Show. “Tanner Schwindt coming in as a quarterback, being a senior, a lot of his time was in the backup role or in some other spot duty, so we had to find a way for him to gain some experience early on, and really just gain some confidence. That’s really, truly, what he’s done.

“Where we are right now, and what we’re doing, I’m very proud of where Platte Valley football is.”

    2A: (2) Bayfield 27, (9) Gunnison 7

Bayfield led 19-7 at halftime, then added to that in the second half to pull out the important top-10 win.

The lead was actually 19-0 in the second quarter before Gunnison got a late score just before the half.
