Fourth-ranked Montrose baseball scored seven runs on ten hits en route to a 7-2 win over Grand Junction on Friday.

Dustin Boone led the way for Montrose with a two-run home run, and Dylan James went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Trey Schwardtfeger pitched 5 2/3 innings in the win, allowing just one earned run. He struck out 10.

“Our guys played tough and executed well,” Montrose coach Landon Wareham said. “We were ready to get after a good pitcher and good team.”

After Grand Junction grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Boone hit his two-run home run, which gave Montrose the lead for good. They added a run in the second, and another in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Grand Junction scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half at 4-2. But Montrose responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth.

“Hits are contagious and right away we were hitting, so it spread around,” said Montrose senior Indy Laird. “We all stuck to the same approach and it works.”

Montrose, now 15-3, plays at Durango next Friday and Saturday. Grand Junction (10-7) hosts Eagle Valley on Monday.

MONTROSE — Katy Coffin scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the second half as Grand Junction girls soccer beat Montrose on Thursday.

The Tigers came out on top, 3-2, and are now 7-3 this season.

“Playing in Montrsoe is always a challenge,” Grand Junction caoch Joseph Graham said. “Their team plays with a lot of pride and plays hard until the end. The Montrose goalie made multiple great saves in the first half to keep us out of the back of the net.”

Grand Junction took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Dannon Yake, which was assisted by Dolcie Hanlon.

Montrose equalized when Josie Coulter scored from an assist by Caroline Graham.

Grand Junction went back up at 2-1 on a goal by Hanlon, who put a rebound home.

Again, Coulter tied the game at 2 for Montorse. The assist came from Montrose goalkeeper Taylor Ullman.

The game was tied at 2 at halftime before Coffin scored for the Tigers, from an assist by Hanlon.

Montrose is now 8-3 this season following the loss.

“We played hard the whole game and had a lot of dangerous opportunities, but had a hard time finding the back of the net,” Montrose coach Cassie Snyder said. “We have made growth every day and we intend to continue to grow. We will learn from this loss and be better the next time we play Grand Junction.”

  • No. 8 Montrose girls basketball rallies to beat Grand Junction

MONTROSE — After being shut out in the first quarter, and trailing 10-6 at halftime, eighth-ranked Montrose girls basketball rallied to beat Grand Junction on Tuesday.

Montrose won, 27-24, in the cross-classification matchup.

“We missed shots in the first half,” said Montrose junior Joise Eccher said. “We fought all the way through the game.”

Montrose chipped away at a 6-0 Grand Junction lead in the second quarter to make it 10-6 at the break. Then, a 15-9 advantage gave Montrose the lead at 21-19 after three quarters.

One key moment in that quarter came on a 3-pointer by Kennadie Minerich that tied the game at 14. Later, with Grand Junction up 18-16, Minerich hit another 3-pointer to give Montrose the lead.

In the fourth quarter, Montrose’s Michaela Ladage hit a key free throw which pushed her team’s lead to 26-22.

“It was a great match up and always is,” Montrose coach Steve Skiff said. “They came in with a ten-game winning streak. We talked about playing for 32 minutes. Our offense got off to a slow start and our defense carried us in the first half. Brenna Moss and Kennadie Minerich played the whole game which isn’t easy to do.

“We kept fighting to the end.”

Minerich finished with 14 points to lead Montrose. She also had six steals.

“Tough, tough game,” Grand Junction coach Sam Provenza said. “We need to finish our shots in the first half. I thought our defense was really good. … We stayed close, we just didn’t get it done. We will put this behind us and prepare for Central and Durango Friday and Saturday.”

Montrose (17-2, 4-0 in the Southwestern League) is off for a week, and will be at Grand Junction Central on Feb. 5. Grand Junction (13-5, 2-1) hosts Grand Junction Central on Friday.
