Fossil Ridge and Ralston Valley have joined this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball poll.

Fossil Ridge is off to a 4-0 start, including in-state wins over Chaparral and Fruita Monument, as well as a 2-0 showing in Wyoming. The SaberCats are No. 9 this week.

Ralston Valley is No. 10 in the poll. The Mustangs went 2-1 last week with a loss to Rock Canyon, but beat Cherry Creek and then-No. 3 Arapahoe. Arapahoe dropped out this week.

The No. 1 teams from last week all stayed put. So Regis Jesuit (5A), Broomfield (4A), Holy Family (3A), Yuma (2A) and Caliche (1A) all continue to lead their respective polls.

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Rangeview and Fossil Ridge both made big jumps in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A boys basketball poll.

Rangeview, ranked fifth last week, is up to No. 3 following a 2-0 week. Included was a 74-70 win over then-No. 9 Chaparral.

Fossil Ridge, meanwhile, went from sixth to fourth after going 3-0 last week. The standout win was a 58-51 win over then-No. 3 Eaglecrest.

The 5A ranking continued to be led by Denver East, which has also started 3-0 at the Great Western Shootout in Utah. Overland remained in the No. 2 spot despite going 1-2 at the same tournament.

Highlands Ranch rounds out the 5A top 5.

The other No. 1 teams also stayed the same this week: Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A), Sanford (2A) and Caliche (1A).

  • Regis Jesuit on top of 5A girls basketball’s preseason ranking

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
Regis Jesuit begins 2013-14 atop the 5A girls basketball poll. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Regis Jesuit is the unanimous No. 1 selection in CHSAANow.com’s preseason girls basketball ranking in 5A.

The poll, released on Monday, featured 18 first-place votes. The Raiders received each one. And it makes sense: Regis Jesuit did not graduate any players from last year’s team which won the title. The squad also has six seniors committed to Division I schools, including Diani Akigbogun (Texas) and Justine Hall (Purdue).

Highlands Ranch, last season’s 5A runner-up, is No. 2 in the preseason ranking. Arapahoe is third, Grandview is fourth and Rock Canyon rounds out the top-5.

Monarch, with coach Gail Hook returning from a one-year hiatus, is sixth. Castle View is seventh, ThunderRidge is eighth, Cherry Creek is ninth and Poudre is tenth.

    (Pam Wagner)
Holy Family is ranked No. 1 in 3A girls basketball. Broomfield is No. 1 in 4A. (Pam Wagner)

In 4A, Broomfield heads the preseason poll. The Eagles reached last year’s semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Pueblo South by three points. Pueblo South begins the season ranked No. 2.

Holy Family is on top of the 3A ranking. The Tigers won last year’s championship.

The 2A poll is headed by Yuma, even though the Indians received three first-place votes to Akron’s four. Akron beat Yuma in last season’s title game, and is ranked second.

Caliche is the preseason No. 1 team in 1A. The Buffaloes lost in last season’s quarterfinals. Defending champion Wiley is unranked to begin the season.

Denver East begins the season ranked atop the 5A poll. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Denver East, Valor Christian, Holy Family, Sanford and Caliche are the preseason boys basketball favorites in their respective classifications.

Those teams were the No. 1 picks in the 5A through 1A CHSAANow.com rankings released Monday morning.

Fossil Ridge is sixth in the 5A poll, Regis Jesuit is seventh, Mountain Vista is eighth, Chaparral is ninth and Legend is tenth. Monarch narrowly missed the top-10.

VONA — After being ousted from last year’s playoffs in the quarterfinals on a last second play, the Liberty/Stratton Knighted Eagles got revenge and won the 6-man football state championship on a beautiful November Saturday afternoon.

Liberty/Stratton held off a last-minute score to hold on for a 44-40 title win, their first in 6-man, but seventh in football.

The Patriots wanted to close out Jim Smith Memorial Field with a state championship win as they are building a new school and a new football field next year in Seibert and this was the last game to be played at the Vona field.

    It wasn’t meant to be.

Liberty/Stratton senior quarterback Trevor Thompson hit senior Clay Corliss on a 36-yard pass for the first score. The Patriots blocked the extra point attempt.

The Patriots answered quickly with senior Alex Nelson’s 14-yard run, and, with senior Avery Marzolf’s kick, the Patriots took a 8-6 lead.

The next play from scrimmage, Thompson found MC Griffin for a 60-yard touchdown to regain the lead, 12-8, after another missed PAT.

Alex Nelson gave the Patriots a lead with a three-yard scamper. Marzolf extra point kick gave the Patriots a 16-12 lead.

Justin Miltenberger’s interception as time ran out in the half stopped the Knighted Eagles threat of scoring.

In the third, Liberty/Stratton’s Griffin scored from nine yards out to switch the lead to 20-16.

Liberty/Stratton junior Kyle English dashed 50 yards and Flint Corliss’ kick gave the Knighted Eagles a 28-16 lead.

The Patriots answered right back with Nelson taking the kickoff return 64 yards to narrow the gap 22-28.

The Patriots got the turnover they needed when Miltenberger intercepted a Thompson pass and took it 20 yards to tied it up at 28 with 43 seconds left in the third.

With 7:12 left in the game, Liberty/Stratton’s Thompson again connected with Clay Corliss to go up 36-28 after the extra point kick.

The Patriots answered with senior Logan Henry hitting Miltenberger for a 19 yard TD strike. Liberty/Stratton’s Thompson blocked the extra point to keep the lead at 36-34 with just under 5:00 left in the game.

The Eagles wanted to put it away and answered with a Thompson to Clay Corliss 26-yard pass and, with the extra point kick, went up 44-34 with only 3:38 left in the game.

The Patriots came back with what could have been a touchdown pass but a fumble in the end zone and a Liberty/Stratton recovery gave the Knighted Eagles the ball back and took away a Patriots score.

The Patriots held the Eagles and took over on downs with 1:53 left in the game and quickly made it a one possession game with Nelson hitting senior Clay Cordell for a 28-yard touchdown, but still trailed 44-40.

The Knighted Eagles were able to run out the clock to claim their first ever 6-man title.

  • Fairview grabs 5A’s top seed as football brackets are released

    (Courtesy photo)
Fairview is the No. 1 seed in 5A. (Courtesy photo)

The groundwork, as is so often the case, was laid four years ago. Tom McCartney saw it in his freshmen then. Those freshmen are now seniors, and that group has Fairview seeded No. 1 overall in the Class 5A football playoffs.

“We knew that it was a special group,” McCartney, Fairview’s coach, said Sunday morning. “We also knew that for them to do the things and reach some of the goals they’ve set, you’ve got to have junior compliments. You want to know that your juniors are also part of that.

“We’ve been kind of waiting on this group of seniors for a while, and a lot of them have gotten a lot of playing time as sophomores and juniors,” he continued. “When you get in those kinds of battles against teams like Pomona and Ralston Valley, and Legacy and Arvada West and Boulder — and Grandview in the playoffs last year, and Regis the year before — all of those experiences help. So, yes, to be honest with you, we’ve seen this coming from this particular group. We knew this was a talented group.”

The Knights were the lone 5A team to finish the regular season unbeaten (9-0). They were ranked No. 2 in the CHSAANow.com football poll in recent weeks, but were No. 1 in Wild Card points during that stretch, and finished atop the final Wild Card standings released Sunday morning.

And so, when the 5A bracket was unveiled, it was Fairview in the No. 1 spot. (See the full bracket.)

“It feels awesome,” McCartney said. “It’s playoff football. We’re just going to prepare. We understand that if you win you move on, and if you don’t you’re done. We want to keep playing. The best way to keep playing is to be prepared and to improve.”

Fairview draws No. 32 Mountain Vista (3-6) in the first round. The two teams played in 2010 and 2011, both Mountain Vista wins.

“Our seniors, when they were freshmen, played them. And so we know a little bit about them,” McCartney said. “We’ve got a ton of respect for coach (Ric) Cash. His teams are always prepared. They’re always hard-nosed.”

Rounding out the top-5 seeds in 5A were No. 2 Valor Christian, No. 3 Cherry Creek, No. 4 Regis Jesuit and No. 5 ThunderRidge.

The top 16 seeds host in the first round, meaning No. 6 Cherokee Trail, No. 7 Columbine, No. 8 Pomona, No. 9 Chatfield, No. 10 Grand Junction, No. 11 Mountain Range, No. 12 Doherty, No. 13 Prairie View, No. 14 Rangeview, No. 15 Ralston Valley and No. 16 Douglas County will get home games.

The 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man brackets were also released on Sunday.

Brush is 2A’s top seed. As the top-8 host in the first round, No. 2 Manitou Springs, No. 3 Platte Valley, No. 4 Faith Christian, No. 5 Gunnison, No. 6 Bennett, No. 7 Kent Denver and No. 8 Florence will all get home games.

Additional 1A qualifiers were No. 9 Resurrection Christian, No. 10 Rye, No. 11 Burlington, No. 12 Cedaredge, No. 13 Colorado Springs Christian, No. 14 Wray, No. 15 Lyons and No. 16 Front Range Christian.

Hoehne is 8-man’s top seed. Also hosting in the first round will be No. 2 Dayspring Christian, No. 3 Norwood, No. 4 Simla, No. 5 Caliche, No. 6 Kiowa, No. 7 Sargent and No. 8 Dove Creek. Mountain Range, 7-1 this season, has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 10, are riding a four-game winning streak, including a 22-16 decision against Rocky Mountain last week. Their lone loss this season came at Grand Junction on Sept. 20.

Valor Christian remained atop the 5A ranking with 19 of the 22 first-place votes. Fairview, which got the other three first-place votes, stayed in the No. 2 spot following its big win over Pomona, and continued to be followed by No. 3 Regis Jesuit, No. 4 Cherry Creek and No. 5 ThunderRidge.

Columbine stayed in sixth this week, while Cherokee Trail bumped up two spots to seventh. Pomona remained in eighth and Grand Junction moved up to ninth after beating 4A No. 1 Montrose.

Despite the loss, Montrose remained atop the 4A ranking. Pine Creek moved up to No. 2, jumping Monarch, which fell to No. 3.

Coronado is now atop the 3A poll after Palisade’s loss to Delta. Discovery Canyon is second and Palisade dropped to third.

Delta joined the ranking at No. 7, as did Roosevelt (No. 9) following its win over then-No. 3 Silver Creek. Silver Creek dropped to No. 8 this week.
