  • Video: February’s Jeffco Preps With Pleuss

A roundup of Jeffco prep highlights from January with Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ Communication Specialist. This month’s edition features wrestling action from the Arvada West Invitational where Jefferson, Pomona and A-West made an impact. Boys basketball action between rivals Dakota Ridge and Columbine. Evergreen and Golden locked up in a big Class 4A Jeffco League boys basketball matchup. Ralston Valley hooked up against Dakota Ridge in girls basketball action. Golden’s Coed Cheer squad was honored at an all-school assembly after winning a state title.

  • No. 2 Jefferson on course for more wrestling success

WHEAT RIDGE — Jefferson’s wrestling program is on a similar course it took two seasons ago.

The Saints are looking to regain the form at Pepsi Center they had two years ago. Jefferson placed second at state in the Class 3A team standings with Kyle Cisneros (132) and Oscar Lopez (220) closing out their senior seasons with individual titles.

As a freshman, Nick Gallegos took home third place at 138 during the Saints’ second-place finish in 2017.

“I think we have even more depth this year,” Jefferson coach Oscar Fonseca said when comparing the 2017 state runner-up team to this year’s squad. “We have more kids this year that are right there in the hunt for a state title and placing at state.”

On The Mat wrestling ranking guru Tim Yount agrees. He moved the Saints up a spot to No. 2 in his latest 3A team rankings released this week.

Cayden Condit, Angelo Lozado, Daniel Soto, Cruz Ortega, Andrew Sansburn, Zander Condit, Gallegos and Alberto Zelaya are all ranked individually by Yount with the state qualifying regional tournaments coming up Feb. 15 and 15.

“I definitely think we have some kids who are ready to scrap down at state,” said Sansburn, who is ranked No. 2 at 132 pounds after placing third last year at state 126 pounds. “I think Coach Oscar is going to have us peaking at the right time.”

Cayden Condit, far right, will attempt to be a two-time state qualifier after making the state tournament last year wrestling at Conifer. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

The addition of the Condit sister/brother tandem has helped the Saints’ depth. Cayden and Zander are students at Conifer High School, but the Lobos dropped their wrestling program this season.

“It’s been great we love Jefferson,” Cayden said of her and older brother Zander Condit wrestling for the Saints. “They have really welcomed us and made us part of the family that they have already established.”

Cayden qualified as a freshman last year to join the elite list of females who have qualified for the Colorado state wrestling tournament. Zander placed fifth at state as a sophomore.

The road for Cayden won’t be easy. She is in one of the roughest 3A regionals for the 106 pounders, but she isn’t backing down from the challenge.

“I’ll just prepare like I do for any other tournament,” said Cayden, who won a girls wrestling tournament in California earlier this month. “I’m just pushing in the wrestling room and drilling more and more every day.”

Cayden hasn’t wrestling any girls tournament in Colorado. Her main focus remains qualifying for state again with the ultimate goal of becoming the first girl to place at the state tournament.

“I’ve just been sticking to the boys tournaments,” Cayden said. “I’ve wrestled boys all my life. I feel like the competition is a little harder. Beating up on boys is kind of fun.”

Jefferson’s Cruz Ortega, top, scored a 15-0 tech fall against Wheat Ridge’s Steven Merrill at 126 pounds. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Jefferson will have the luxury of hosting the 3A Region 3 tournament.

“It will be fun and really cool,” Sansburn said of the Saints hosting the regional sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Wagner Wealth Management Group coming up next month. “I’m really excited to have that home-field advantage this year and us not having to drive down to Pueblo this year.”

Sansburn is approaching the 100-win career mark during his prep wrestling career that started at Bear Creek. Juniors Zander Condit and Gallegos just reached the 100-win mark.

“We have the tools to do something special,” Fonseca said. “It’s the same thing like a couple of years ago because we are working hard, doing extra practices and in really good shape. We are even going to be better in two or three weeks.”

Jefferson dominated Wheat Ridge in a dual Thursday night on the Farmers’ home mat. Only five varsity matches were wrestled. The Saints earned four wins by pin and a technical fall to sweep all the matches.

However, Wheat Ridge coach David Osse said he will be rooting for the Saints as they continue toward another magic finish to the season.

“He (Fonseca) has done a wonderful job growing that program,” Osse said. “I think it’s great for Jefferson High School. He has really given them something to hang their hat on. They are going to continue being successful.”

Wheat Ridge heads to Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver for the Class 4A Region 1 tournament coming up in a little over three weeks.

Wheat Ridge senior Frank Castillo qualified to the 4A state tournament last year at heavyweight. He was the lone Farmer to pick up a victory Thursday night. Jefferson forfeited at 285 so Castillo got the win in his final home dual.

  • Colorado’s elite wrestlers battle at Arvada West Invitational

ARVADA — The evidence was overwhelming how competitive and challenging the two-day Arvada West Wrestling Invitational was as it wrapped up late Saturday afternoon.

The annual tournament featured the On The Mat’s top 3 ranked teams in Class 5A and 4A — Pomona, Grand Junction, Grandview, Windsor, Pueblo East and Pueblo County — along with 25 state placers and 11 nationally ranked wrestlers.

Brighton sophomore Kenny Sailas, right, defeated Arvada West senior Mitchell Romero in the 106-pound title match Saturday. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“This tournament has got tougher,” Pomona coach Sam Federico said.

The Panthers, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, eventually finished fifth in the team standings. Pomona senior Justin Pacheco was the lone Panther to advance to the championship matches. He lost to Windsor junior Dominick Serrano 7-2.

“Serrano is definitely the guy I wanted to wrestle this year,” Pacheco said. “It didn’t go the way I wanted it to this time, but I’ll see him again at the state duals in a couple of weeks.”

Serrano, a two-time 4A state champion, improved his high school career record to 104-0 with the victory.

A handful of Pomona wrestlers didn’t wrestle during the two-day tournament and the Panthers suffered a couple of more injuries at the meet.

“We are about as beat up as I have ever seen us,” Federico admitted. “The tournaments we go to you get beat up, but I think it makes us better wrestlers and tougher mentally. There are no season-ending injuries. We just need some time to recoup. We have time.”

Windsor junior Isaiah Salazar, left, works on a takedown of Pomona sophomore Franklin Cruz in a 182-pound semifinal Saturday. Salazar remained undefeated on the season winning the 182 title. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Jefferson junior Nick Gallegos made the most of his time in the highly competitive tournament. Gallegos — ranked No. 1 at 152-pounds in Class 3A — took victory by injury default against Pueblo County’s Trevor Singleton — No. 3 in 4A at 152. Singleton appeared to suffer a knee injury midway through the first period and couldn’t continue.

“It feels really good. It took me two years to get here,” Gallegos said of his victory at A-West. “I couldn’t have done this without my coach Dwight Howes. It feels great.”

Howes was a state champion at Arvada High School in his day and has been an assistant coach for Jefferson head coach Oscar Fonseca.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a champion here,” Fonseca said. “That is a pretty great accomplishment. He (Gallegos) never stops working in the wrestling room.”

Gallegos placed third at 138 pounds during his first trip to the state tournament as a freshman in 2017. He was a favorite to win last year, but Gallegos was in a car accident two days before the state tournament. He lost 2-0 in his opening match and had to drop out of the tournament due to injury.

“My focus is winning a state title,” Gallegos said.

Grandview senior Fabian Santillan, right, takes down Jefferson junior Zander Condit during a semifinal match at 138 pounds. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Jefferson could be in the mix for the 3A state title. The Saints are currently ranked third. Fonseca had five wrestlers compete at the A-West Invite and four placed in the top 4.

“These tournament are great, but they are just practice,” Fonseca said. “We are looking toward our next match. We don’t look at rankings. We don’t worry about that stuff.”

A nice addition for the Saints this season was the sister/brother tandem of Cayden and Zander Condit. Conifer dropped its wrestling program this year so the Condits are wrestling for Jefferson.

Cayden is looking to join the list of female wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament and Zander placed fifth at 132 pounds in the 3A tournament last year.

“They fit in extremely well with us,” Fonseca said of the Condits. “They have come in and been a part of our family. They have been a great addition for us.”

Arvada West wasn’t able to grab an individual title, but senior Mitchell Romero (106) and freshman Dylan Kruse (113) both advanced to title bouts.

Pueblo East came away with the team title racking up 195.5 points. Rival Pueblo County (188.5) took second and Windsor (185.5) placed third.

  • Alameda boys basketball improves to 8-0

EDGEWATER — A few days before the winter break beings there are three undefeated boys basketball teams remaining in Class 4A.

Not surprising, Lewis-Palmer and Longmont — ranked No. 1 and 2 in the current 4A boys CHSAANow.com poll — hold two of those undefeated spots. The third might be a bit of a surprise.

Alameda International holds an 8-0 record after Thursday’s 56-32 road victory against Jefferson.

Jefferson senior Antonio Portillo (0) goes up strong against Alameda International senior Orlondo Aguilar on Thursday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“I never thought we would go 8-0, but I knew we had the team to do it,” Alameda senior Isiah Lawson said after the Pirates’ latest win. “The coaching and the bond the team has is the difference.”

Last season, Alameda finished above .500 in more than a decade. Second-year varsity head coach Geremey Gibson, who spent one year as an assistant coach at Alameda, has the majority of last year’s squad back and so far the Pirates are perfect.

“It feels really good, especially with the players we have,” Gibson said of the undefeated record. “They have been working hard. I’ve been with this group for three years, so I knew what they are capable of. I knew we had something special.”

Lawson was special against the Saints pouring in a game-high 15 points. The Pirates’ point guard and floor general did it on both ends of the floor. He had several strong drives to the basket that resulted in layups or trips to the free throw line.

Just before taking a seat on the bench in the fourth quarter Lawson had a monster block on the defensive end.

Alameda International senior Fernando Dominguez, far right, has his shot blocked in the first half Thursday night. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“Lawson is very important,” Gibson said. “On the court he gives us that toughness that we need from a football player who transitions to a basketball player. He builds everyone else up.”

Alameda’s zone defense held Jefferson to single digits in three of the four quarters. Seniors Antonio Portillo (10 points) and Kurvonte Rice (nine points) led the Saints (2-3 record) in scoring.

Seniors Derik Gutierrez (12 points) and Orlondo Aguilar (10 points) joined Lawson in double-digit points for the Pirates. Senior Dominic Creazzo added nine points off three 3-pointers for Alameda.

“We are disciplined, especially during practice,” Lawson said. “We have to stay disciplined. With discipline comes winning games.”

Gibson has focused on the defensive end. That work paid off Thursday night with Alameda allowing a season-low 32 points.

“As the season goes on it gets long I harp that defense is going to carry us,” Gibson said.

The Pirates are right back on the court tomorrow (Friday) to finish off play before winter break. Alameda faces Pueblo Centennial at 6:30 p.m. The game will be played at Denver West High School.

“Tomorrow is a very big game,” Gibson said. “I feel if we can go to 9-0 it would be very big for the kids spirit and also for the Alameda crowds.”

After tomorrow night’s game the Pirates won’t play again until Jan. 10 when they host Denver North. The goals and expectations have definitely been raised for Alameda with the strong start.

“I don’t think we’ve been to the state tournament since 2007,” Lawson said. “We want to make the playoffs and advance to the Elite 8.”

Jefferson is back on the court Jan. 8 when it begins conference play in the 3A/2A Frontier League. The Saints host Middle Park at 7 p.m. in their league opener in a little more than two weeks.

Alameda International senior Benito Aragon (2) snags a rebound between Jefferson’s Josh Martinez (15) and Kurvonte Rice (2) during the Pirates’ 56-32 road victory. The win improved Alameda to 8-0 on the season. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
