  • All-state wrestling teams for 2016-17 season

The 2016-17 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected by team performance at the state meet, as well.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); strength of a weight classification’s bracket; and multiple championships.

Scroll down to see the teams, or use the menu below to navigate to the class of your choosing.

  • First 3A swimming state meet provides new opportunities for girls

THORNTON — New faces and new teams dotted the deck at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center on Friday morning during the Class 3A girls swimming and diving state preliminaries.

It marked the start of the first-ever championship meet in the classification, which was added, in part, to create more participation opportunities in the sport for girls.

    Well, that worked.

Roughly 54 percent of participants in this year’s state meet didn’t participate at state last season. Two schools, Moffat County and Northfield, were represented after not sending a swimmer to last year’s state meet.

“This is great now,” said Kent Denver coach Craig Petersen, who saw his team qualify nine to the state meet — up from an average of three or four per year. “It’s great for the girls, it gives them some confidence, and it’s just so much more fun now for the kids.”

“It’s huge,” added Longmont coach Kelly Shipley, whose team also added a significant number of qualifiers this season. “It gives girls more opportunities to make it at the state level.”

It also has changed the meet in terms of competition as the enrollment gap has shrunk. Now, the top-end of the class is 1,234, spanning 42 schools. Last season, the cap was 1,410 — but that spanned 70 schools.

“This is so great for these girls. We’ve been trying to get this 3A classification going for years,” said Petersen, who credited Ron Johns — the Chatfield coach, coaches association president and state meet director — for his role in advocating for a third classification. “It hasn’t been right from the standpoint of schools. We had to compete at essentially a 4-to-1 ratio against some of these bigger schools. But this is huge. I couldn’t be happier for my girls.”

On Friday, St. Mary’s Academy senior Alex Reddington stood out in the prelims.

She ended the session with the top qualifying time in the 200 freestyle (1:52.93) and the 100 butterfly (56.35) — which wasn’t too surprising considering she won both events at the 4A state meet last season.

But Reddington also helped her team qualify second in the 200 medley relay, and anchored the Wildcats’ 400 freestyle relay that posted the top time of the round (3:41.79).

“It went really well,” Redding said of the prelims. “I posted some times I’m pretty proud of. I’m excited for tomorrow. It felt really good.”

Reddington added that while 3A was “a little less competition,” she liked the new class because “we were able to bring another relay here, we had a few more individual swimmers.”

    “That is great,” Reddington said.

Aspen, the top-ranked team heading into the state meet, also had a number of girls who stood out.

Sophomore Davy Brown qualified first in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Senior Kennidy Quist was first in the 50 free and second in the 100 free.

The team also qualified first in the 200 medley relay and second in the 400 freestyle. Both relays included Brown and Quist.

Pueblo County notched the top time in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 1:42.67. That group included Amanda Blickensderfer, who also qualified first in the 100 breaststroke.

The 3A finals are Saturday at VMAC. Races begin at 2:30 p.m.

  • Girls basketball rankings: St. Mary’s now No. 1 in 3A

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

St. Mary’s has taken over the top spot of the Class 3A girls basketball rankings.

The Pirates notched a win on Friday night, taking down rival (and No. 10) Manitou Springs, impressing enough voters to move up from their previous spot at No. 2.

They take the spot from Sterling who falls to No. 2.

Only one new team broke into the 3A poll as Olathe comes in at No. 8.

In 5A, Grandview hangs on to the top spot while receiving the news that Michaela Onyenwere was named a McDonald’s All-American.

Highlands Ranch jumps one spot to land at No. 2.

At No. 10, Rocky Mountain is the only newcomer to the 5A poll.

Pueblo South keeps the No. 1 spot in 4A with Evergreen also holding firm at No. 2.

Mesa Ridge made a three-spot jump to land at No. 4 this week.

Palisade (No. 9) and Windsor (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 4A rankings.

Paonia received 16 of 17 first-place votes to keep the top spot in the 2A rankings. At No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, Lyons and Swink each jumped two spots from a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 2A poll.

The same situation applies to the 1A poll as all 10 teams from a week ago remain in the top 10, with just a tweak here and there.

Kit Carson remains at No. 1, but Antonito takes the No. 2 spot from Fleming who falls one spot to No. 3.

South Baca (No. 6) and Kiowa (No. 7) also traded spots from last weeks rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Pueblo South is the team to beat in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings. At least for this week.

The Colts are the new No. 1 team in the 4A poll, uprooting Evergreen, which fell one spot to No. 2.

Other Pueblo-area schools shot up the rankings as well with Pueblo East coming in at No. 4 and Pueblo West going from unranked to No. 6.

Grandview holds its spot at No. 1 in the 5A poll, taking all 15 first-place votes.

Doherty made a significant climb, land three spots better at No. 5.

Fossil Ridge rounds out the rankings at No. 10 and is the only new team in the 5A poll.

Sterling and St. Mary’s each remain undefeated and have yet to relinquish their spots at No. 1 and No. 2 in 3A.

The Pirates looked strong in a win over Lamar on Friday and Sterling was able to edge out No. 10 Manitou Springs on Saturday.

Liberty Common made a four-spot jump to land at No. 3 this week. There are no new teams in the 3A poll.

Paonia is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 2A. There were no significant jumps this week, but Del Norte (No. 4), Haxtun (No. 5), Evangelical Christian (No. 7) and Highland (No. 9) are all one position better than the previous rankings.

There are no new teams in the 2A poll.

Kit Carson remains the No. 1 team in 1A with Fleming and Antonio also holding strong at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

South Baca improved by two spots to land at No. 7.

La Veta (No. 8), Briggsdale (No. 9) and Holly (No. 10) are the three new teams to crack the 1A rankings.
