LAKEWOOD — Chatfield’s rushing attack was simply unstoppable Friday at Jeffco Stadium.

The Chargers racked up 279 yards on the ground on 34 carries — in the first half — against Palmer. Senior Dalton Keene (13 carries for 132 yards) and junior Ben Frenette (nine carries for 89 yards) each ran for a pair of scores in the first half as the No. 3 ranked team in the Class 4A football CHSAANow.com poll took a 40-0 lead at halftime.

The final score was 53-7 in favor of the Chargers (2-0).

“It definitely brings a whole new speed to it,” Keene said. “It let’s you slow down and relax sometimes. It’s definitely a lot different then our high-tempo spread offense.”

Chatfield went old school with its rushing attack, bringing back formations that Green Mountain teams coached by Don McGatlin in the 1990s. Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin, Don’s son, decided to go to the old Rams’ rushing style to honor his father. Don, an assistant coach for the Chargers, lost his mountain cabin because of a fire on Monday. The cabin hosted numerous football camps over the years.

“We did it for him (Don McGatlin) because it was a tough week,” Bret McGatlin said.

The game-plan was clear from the start of the non-league game. Chatfield ran the ball on its first 21 offensive plays from scrimmage. Junior quarterback Colton Arne put the ball into the air just six times in the first half, but did have a 31-yard completion to senior Andrew Mangold during the Chargers’ 33-point second quarter.

Chatfield junior linebacker Cameron Manzanares had the defensive highlight in the first half with an interception that he returned 20 yards for a defensive touchdown. Palmer (0-2) was held to just a pair first downs in the opening half.

“It was solid effort from everybody,” Manzanares said. “Everyone was doing their job. We got the job done.”

With a running clock for the entire second half, Chatfield added on to its lead with a 9-yard touchdown run by senior Logan Dannenhauer and yet another defensive touchdown when junior Josh Cronin recovered a fumble and returned it 11 yards for the score in the third quarter.

“We have a solid defense. We just made some big mistakes last week,” Bret McGatlin said about last week when the Chargers allowed nearly 500 yards of total offense against Pine Creek. “It was a lot different today.”

Palmer prevented the shutout with a 60-yard touchdown run by senior Daniel Martinez in the fourth quarter to make the score 53-7 with seven minutes to play.

Chatfield rocketed up the 4A state football poll after an impressive 50-39 road victory against perennial 4A powerhouse Pine Creek. The Chargers went from unranked in the preseason poll to No. 3 this week.

“We said when we came to 4A that we wanted to match-up with the best,” Bret McGatlin said. “We are excited, but it is a long, long way to go.”

The schedule gets a little more intense the next two weeks for Chatfield. The Chargers face Wheat Ridge in a battle between two Jeffco schools at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 at Jeffco Stadium. That game will be broadcasted live on Altitude.

Looming after that is the annual showdown against rival Columbine (ranked No. 5 in the 5A poll) on Sept. 22 at Jeffco Stadium.

“We need to stay humble. We can’t take it easy,” Keene said. “We have a tough schedule ahead of us.”

EVERGREEN — The defending Class 4A boys soccer state champions began the 2016 season right where they left off.

Evergreen, ranked No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com preseason poll, opened the season Thursday with a dominating 6-0 victory over Palmer at Evergreen High School. Five different Cougars found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.

“It feels like we’ve been in preseason forever,” Evergreen coach Ross Fowler said. “It is good to be in the regular season. We love coming out here and playing.”

The non-league game against the Terrors (0-4-1 record) was actually cut short. A lightning storm quickly moved in after Evergreen senior Steven Belrose put in his second goal of the game five minutes into the second half.

Officials put the game into a delay with 32 minutes, 40 second remaining in regulation time. The decision was made quickly to call the game because of the lightning, but since the game was in the second half it was already an official game to get the Cougars off to a 1-0 start.

“I just wanted a good start to the season,” said Evergreen senior Richard Benson, who scored the Cougars’ first goal in the ninth minute with a header off a corner kick from Belrose. “We obviously have a target on our back and we want to get back to that state championship.”

Evergreen defeated The Classical Academy 1-0 in the 4A state championship game a year ago to give the Cougars their first boys state soccer title since 1989.

Junior Brendan Maus, along with seniors Adam Babb, Brock Anderson, Benson and Belrose all scored in the first half Thursday night to give the Cougars a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime. Four of the first-half goals all were assisted goals as Evergreen showed off its scoring ability.

“Our motto is possession,” Benson said. “We like to go up the flanks and just try to go as quick as we can. We’ve got a lot of speed. We want to keep the ball and put it in the goal.”

Palmer wasn’t able to get a shot on goal against Evergreen senior goalie Logan Westgard in the first 40 minutes. Junior Brian Belrose took over in the net in the second half for the Cougars in the eventual shutout victory.

“We know we’ll be reasonably strong going forward,” Fowler said. “We have really put a lot of focus on defensive shape, defensive pressure and decision making. The first thing we wrote on the board tonight was protect the shutout.”

Fowler believes his squad has more depth that last year’s state championship team. However, the Cougars know they will get everyone’s best game this season.

“We’ve got to make our mark as the frontrunners again,” Steven Belrose said. “Everyone wants a piece of the best team. We’ve got to bring it every night.”

Evergreen will get a great test when it travels down to Colorado Springs next Tuesday, Sept. 6, to face No. 4 ranked Air Academy (3-0).

“(Air Academy) is obviously a really good team,” Benson said of facing the Kadets next week. “It is always fun to go out there. I think it will be a good game and a good test for us.”

  • Owen Pasvogel, Discovery Canyon start boys golf season with win at Spartan Invite

COLORADO SPRINGS — Owen Pasvogel couldn’t help himself. On the 12th tee box, his curiosity got the better of him, so he asked the scorekeeper a simple question.

“What’s the low score right now?”

He was told the low score was 2-over.

    “Well I’m at 1-over.”

Well then, the low score is 1-over.

So with three holes left to play, the senior-to-be from Discovery Canyon changed his approach and decided to play like he had a lead.

“I saw a lot of kids at 1-under during the round so I thought that I needed to make a couple of birdies to finish,” he said. “Once I knew (that I had the lead), I knew I just had to hit fairways and hit greens.”

And he did just that to end with a 1-over-par 72 on Monday to come away with the individual championship at the Doherty Spartan Invitational.

To top it all off, his teammates added plenty of support and it was the Thunder who also came away with the team title, shooting 226 as a unit.

“It felt great just to see what the kids were going to do,” coach Mark Liggett said. “They’ve been playing all summer and in a lot of tournaments and it’s carrying over to right now.”

For the most part, it was never a question as to which team was going to come away with the win. Pasvogel and Caleb Blackburn each had their name atop the leaderboard at least once throughout the round and Hayden Fry was consistently near the top as well.

Fry finished at 4-over while Blackburn ended his day at 5-over.

So it was the individual race that provided most of the drama at the Colorado Springs Country Club. Palmer’s Arick Roberts sank a birdie on the 18th to move to 2-under, which was tied for the lead at that point. With his day over, all he could do is wait around to see if anyone would be able to beat that number.

“I wasn’t playing great all day and I had to finish strong,” Roberts said. “I always like to start out strong because you can always fall back and relax when you get a good score out there.”

It was only a few minutes later that Pasvogel sank his birdie on the 11th. He nearly pushed the lead to two strokes on the 12th green, but just ran the ball past the hole on his downhill putt.

“I knew I put a good stroke on it, I just hit it too firm,” Pasvogel said. “I had nice, easy, uphill, right to left breaking putt (after that) which is my favorable putt.”

Rampart ended with the best score of all the Class 5A teams in the tournament, ending the day at 238. They finished second place overall, only behind Discovery Canyon. It was an encouraging sign for the Rams to see early success against a lot of teams from the Colorado Springs Metro League.

“We emphasize that the offseason is important so I want my kids to play well in the summer,” coach Scott Blatnick said. “So to come out and play like this in their first round, it shows that they worked hard all summer.”

Cameron Como had the best finish for the Rams, ending his day at 4-over.
