Lakewood, coming off a big win over Montrose, has joined the Class 5A football poll this week.

The Tigers beat Montrose, then ranked No. 2 in 4A, on Saturday. Monday, they entered CHSAANow.com’s ranking at No. 9.

Elsewhere in 5A, Valor Christian remained the unanimous No. 1 team, but things changed behind the Eagles. Cherokee Trail (No. 2), Pomona (No. 3) and Grandview (No. 4) all moved up one spot this week after Cherry Creek, last week’s No. 2, fell to Pomona.

Creek is No. 5 this week, and is followed by Fairview, Ralston Valley, Regis Jesuit, newcomer Lakewood and Overland.

The 4A ranking also added one team in No. 10 Longmont, which was ranked in the preseason. Pine Creek maintained its spot at No. 1. Pueblo South moved up to No. 2 after Montrose’s loss, and Denver South bumped up to No. 3. Montrose is fourth this week, and Vista Ridge is fifth.

In 3A, Erie joined at No. 10. Lutheran continued its stay at No. 1, and Delta remained just behind at No. 2. Discovery Canyon bumped up to No. 3 after its big win over Holy Family last week.

The 2A poll added No. 8 Bayfield, while 1A added No. 7 Cedaredge and No. 9 Platte Canyon. Granada (No. 7) joined the 8-man ranking, while 6-man added No. 8 Cheyenne Wells and No. 9 Flagler.

The No. 1 teams in each of those classifications remained the same. Those are Brush, Paonia, Dayspring Christian and Stratton/Liberty, respectively.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Dakota Ridge latest No. 1 team in 5A softball rankings

    (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

Is there a clear-cut favorite in Class 5A softball? Three weeks into the season, it doesn’t appear that way.

For the second week in a row, there is a new No. 1-ranked team. Dakota Ridge takes over atop CHSAANow.com’s poll, and follows Legacy (preseason) and Brighton (last week) as top teams in the classification.

The Eagles are 7-2-0 this season and went 2-1 last week with wins over Castle View and Erie. Dakota Ridge also beat Legend earlier this season, but did drop a game to Mountain Range last week.

Brighton dropped to No. 2 following a loss to Columbine last week. Legend moved up to No. 3 after going 3-0 last week with wins over Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest and Grandview.

Mountain Range, meanwhile, moved up to No. 4 from No. 9. Legacy rounds out 5A’s top five teams.

Columbine is the lone newcomer in 5A, joining at No. 10.

Frederick (4A) and Strasburg (3A), the other two No. 1 teams, stayed the same this week.

4A added Windsor (No. 8) this week, while 3A added Brush (No. 9) and Skyline (No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Pueblo East, Wheat Ridge, Discovery Canyon make big moves in football rankings

There were a number of major movers as CHSAANow released the first football rankings of the regular season on Monday.

New Wheat Ridge football coach Dan Reardon. (Tracy Renck)
New Wheat Ridge football coach Dan Reardon. (Tracy Renck)

Pueblo East (Class 3A), Discovery Canyon (3A), and Wheat Ridge (4A) all made big jumps after being unranked in the preseason.

Pueblo East had the biggest climb, and wound up at No. 3 in the 3A poll after winning its first two games. The Eagles beat Longmont, No. 4 in the preseason 4A poll, in Zero Week, then topped Coronado, the defending 3A champion which has since moved up to 4A, in Week 1.

Discovery Canyon is No. 6 in 3A this week. Last Thursday, the Thunder beat Silver Creek, the 3A runner-up a season ago which has also moved up to 4A.

And Wheat Ridge, also off to a 2-0 start under new coach Dan Reardon in 4A, has won its games by a combined 91-0. The Farmers are No. 5 in this week’s 4A poll.

In total, those moves were just a microcosm of the new rankings, which saw massive change. All seven polls got at least one new team, with 4A and 6-man getting four new members, and 3A adding three.

There’s also a new No. 1 team in 2A, where Brush takes over for Platte Valley.

The least amount of change occurred in 5A, where Valor Christian continues its stranglehold on the No. 1 spot following its physical win over Pomona. The Eagles received all 13 first-place votes.

Teams Nos. 2-4 stayed the same behind them: Cherry Creek (which beat Regis Jesuit), Cherokee Trail and Pomona. Grandview joined the top five this week, bumping up three places from its preseason No. 8 spot.

    (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)
    More photos. (Tim Visser/TimVisserPhotography.com)

Chatfield remained at No. 6, Fairview moved up three spots to No. 7, Regis Jesuit fell to No. 8 and Ralston Valley remained at No. 9.

The lone newcomer in 5A is Overland, which joined at No. 10.

In addition to Wheat Ridge in 4A, new teams include No. 8 Vista Ridge, No. 9 Falcon and No. 10 Fort Collins. Pine Creek remained atop that poll following its escape of Falcon’s upset bid.

Besides Pueblo East and Discovery Canyon, D’Evelyn also joined the 3A ranking. Lutheran stayed atop that poll after its overtime win in Texas last week.

2A added No. 9 Eaton, while 1A added No. 7 Meeker. Paonia is still No. 1 in 1A.

The 8-man ranking added No. 8 Akron and No. 9 Springfield. Dayspring Christian continues to lead that pack.

Finally, 6-man added No. 6 Prairie, No. 7 Pawnee, No. 8 Walsh and No. 10 Cotopaxi. Stratton/Liberty remained in the top spot.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

  • In a bruising football game, Windsor tops Roosevelt

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

WINDSOR — Friday night at Dudley Field, home of the Windsor Wizards, old school football fans would’ve been pleased.

In a 24-7 Wizard win over Roosevelt, both teams displayed a smash-mouth, hard-hitting style with the pigskin almost solely in the hands of the tailbacks and fullbacks.

Windsor, ranked No. 10 in CHSAANow.com’s Class 4A poll, threw enough second half punches to pull away from 3A No. 5 Roosevelt (1-1) after a 7-7 score at the break.

“It was a slugfest,” Windsor coach Chris Jones said. “We came out pretty high strung early on. I believe we had seven penalties in the first quarter, which hurt us and helped them a little. They stayed pretty calm.”

Roosevelt was coming off a 34-25 road win at 4A Thompson Valley in Zero Week. And the Riders, with lightning painting the background far off in the distance, struck first after recovering a muffed punt return at Windsor’s 41 yard line.

The Wizards had two critical personal foul penalties, giving Roosevelt further momentum. Power back Christian Majszak ran in a two-yard touchdown and the extra point gave the Riders a 7-0 lead with 10:28 to play in the first half.

“We’ll just attribute that to first game jitters with a couple new guys,” Jones said of his team’s early miscues.

“We just came out a little emotional,” fullback Jake Shields added. “We were high-strung and ready to hit. Things got a little out of hand. But eventually, we really just put things together.”

“We calmed down in the second quarter, drove one the length of the field, and put one in,” Jones noted. “We got the ball back in the second half, drove down and scored again. I think we calmed down and our coaches schemed real well how to stop the attack and get after the attack. That’s a very tough team and a big team, if you saw compared to us.”

Windsor’s own bruiser, Cody Johnson, capped off a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to tie the game at seven with 3:44 remaining in the opening half.

From then on, it was all Windsor as the home team utilized a multi-faceted rushing attack and a gritty defense to wear down the Riders. Juniors Jake Shields (16 carries, 94 yards, two touchdowns) and Landon Schmidt — the speedsters — and seniors Noah Winick and Johnson — the bulldozers — controlled possession.

Shields found the edge for a 16-yard touchdown run with 4:59 left in the third to give Windsor a 14-7 lead. The Wizards dominated the ball before a lightning delay with 5:12 remaining. A field goal and another touchdown run by Shields sealed a season opening win for Windsor.

“Jake came back from last week’s scrimmage and did a great job,” Jones said. “He’s a short slippery guy with great vision. You don’t see that little (5-foot-5) dude back there. He runs hard, protects the ball. As far as for pound for pound strength and for how hard he runs, he’s definitely a help.

“Then, we put Cody back there and he’s a bulldozer,” Jones added. “It was a fullback game for us mostly. They took away the quarterback, but if you take away the quarterback, we’ll go fullback wings. Defense played well and wrapped up in tackles. It was a fight. We knew it was going to be 48 body blows.”

“O-line did their jobs and we did all the little details we’ve been working on all summer,” Shields said of the victory. “We just came together as a brotherhood.”

“Thanks to the sacrifice of the kids to do our year-round stuff, conditioning and training, how our coaches push them in practice, and how they push each other in practice, it all goes back to that,” Jones said of his team’s ability to wear down Roosevelt late. “It’s almost like we need a fifth quarter sometimes, because we start off a little slow at times.”

Windsor moves to 1-0 before taking on No. 6 Broomfield, always a tough 4A opponent, at home next Friday.

Quarterback Tanner Bohm was pleased with the season opening win. “That was a good team, good team to play in the first game, and good team to work our kinks out,” he said.

“Our expectations are always high,” Bohm added. “We have a standard at Windsor that we have to uphold every year. Like we say, tradition never graduates, tradition keeps going on and on. We’re held to high expectations and we all know that.”

  • Defending champs rule preseason football rankings

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)
Valor Christian is the preseason No. 1 in 5A. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Defending champions head six of football’s seven preseason CHSAANow.com rankings, which were unveiled Monday morning.

The lone exception is Lutheran in Class 3A — which saw both its champion (Coronado) and runner-up (Silver Creek) move up to 4A this cycle.

In fact, that ranking was also the most split of any other, with both Lutheran and preseason No. 2 Delta both getting three first-place votes. Lutheran got the No. 1 nod with 65 total points. Delta had 53 points.

Lutheran was eliminated in the first round of the 3A playoffs last season, while Delta made the semifinals. Lutheran is entering its first season under new coach Blair Hubbard, formerly of Faith Christian.

Valor Christian, a five-time defending champion across three classifications, opens up as No. 1 in Class 5A for the second year in a row. The Eagles topped Fairview to win the 5A title last season.

Cherry Creek, a quarterfinalist a year ago, is No. 2 in 5A. Cherokee Trail is ranked third, Pomona is fourth and Columbine is fifth.

Chatfield begins the season as No. 6, Regis Jesuit is No. 7, Grandview is No. 8, Ralston Valley is No. 9 and Fairview rounds out the preseason poll.

Among those receiving votes in 5A were ThunderRidge, Overland, newcomer Monarch and Legend.

In 4A, Pine Creek begins as the No. 1 team. The Eagles beat Montrose in last year’s title game. Montrose is No. 2 in the ranking.

Other preseason No. 1 teams are Platte Valley (2A), Paonia (1A), Dayspring Christian (8-man) and Stratton/Liberty (6-man).

The rankings are voted upon by coaches and select media members, and are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, rankings will be released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

  • Notebook: Hubbard starts new challenge with Lutheran football

Perhaps no football coaching change this offseason was as major as Blair Hubbard leaving Faith Christian for Lutheran.

Hubbard won three state championships in 15 seasons as head coach at Faith Christian, a perennial power in the Class 2A ranks. His teams were 148-30, made the playoffs 14 times and won 10 league titles.

But in the offseason Hubbard was looking to tackle something new. Lutheran — a 3A team since the school was formed by a merger of the old Denver Lutheran and Lutheran-Parker schools prior to the 2012 season — was a fit.

Hubbard was hired on Feb. 20.

“I was just kind of looking for a new challenge, so when the opportunity presented itself I took some time to think about it, talked it over with my wife and some other wise council and decided to go ahead,” Hubbard said. “This was a good opportunity to make the change. I’m excited about this season and just the future of Lutheran High School football in general.”

Faith Christian moved quickly to hire Ralph Nance, Hubbard’s defensive coordinator, as his successor. It meant that Hubbard’s staff — which had been together for “over 10 years,” he said — was not going to stay intact.

“I’ve hired a completely new staff,” Hubbard said. “That was a specific challenge. And it was a good process.”

Hubbard’s new staff at Lutheran comprises 10 assistants — five of whom are in the building.

“I feel very comfortable with the coaches that we have on staff,” Hubbard said. “We’ve just got a good cohesiveness together. Everybody’s on the same page and is there for the same reason. We’re there to help build young men into men, boys into men. We’re not there necessarily for the wins and the losses. If we do our jobs, those kinds of things will hopefully take care of themselves. Our purpose is to have an effect in young men’s lives.”

Lutheran was 31-11 in former coach Daryl Moe’s four seasons, including three playoff appearances. So Hubbard is inheriting a great program.

Included are quarterback James Willis and receiver Josh Clausen, both seniors and four-year varsity members, who combined for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns through the air last season.

Willis, entering his third year as the starter at quarterback, threw for 2,306 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

“He’s someone that’s just a humble leader, he’s a hard worker,” Hubbard said. “That’s the kind of athlete we’re looking to model our program after. Someone’s that just has that blue-collar work ethic and is humble and willing to help other kids out along the way.”

Clausen already has 2,312 receiving yards in his three seasons, which is just outside the top-10 in the state’s career record book.

“He’s (6-foot-4) and he’s got very good speed and great hands,” Hubbard said. “He’s getting some looks from some of the area Division I schools, so it’s exciting to work with him. He’s got that same kind of work ethic that we’re looking for, as well.”

A group of linemen also return.

“They have been very consistent in the weight room, and whenever you’ve got the kids up front that are dedicated to spending time in the weight room, you’re going to have a good opportunity to win some battles up front,” Hubbard said.

Lutheran opens the season in Houston, playing at Lutheran South Academy — a Division II school in Texas which went 8-3 and made the playoffs last season. It’s an opportunity for everyone to get to know one another really well, really quick.

“It will be a fun experience for the kids and for the coaches,” Hubbard said. “There’s a lot of logistics involved and we’ve gotten a lot of outstanding administrative support from the school.

“They’re of the mindset that they’re there for the athletes and the athletic program and want to do as much as they can to help the young men and women out in the athletic programs to have a great experience in their time at Lutheran.”

    Short stuff

    • During its transition to a regional program, the former Montbello High School athletic department will be known as the Warriors (Montbello). Eventually, the plan is to simply call the teams the Warriors — without including the Montbello clarifier.
    • Last week at the All-School Summit, a new approach to the classification structure was discussed. Every impression I’ve gotten seems like this is where the state will head this fall — though there was some resistance voiced during the classification breakout session at the Summit. We’ll see if that initial uneasiness turns into action ahead of CLOC’s November meeting.
    • Valor Christian’s Eric Lee Jr. and Pine Creek’s Avery Anderson, both defensive backs, will enroll at Nebraska early, the school announced.
    • Regis Jesuit offensive linemen Tim Lynott’s father tweeted out his official offer letter from Colorado. Lynott is a CU commit, and was recently moved up to a 4-star recruit by Scout.com.
    • Here’s a neat picture of Windsor’s football team playing in a flooded field near its school during storms last week. (Coach Chris Jones was quick to urge safety to his players: “Be smart about the water in front of the school,” he tweeted.)
    • Brighton pitcher/shortstop Conner Reynolds committed to Northern Colorado for baseball last week.
    • Tony Ramunno had been the head football coach at Lewis-Palmer for 25 seasons, but he resigned late last month. “I really like Friday nights; it’s probably the best job a guy can have in the country,” he told the Colorado Springs Gazette. Former defensive coordinator Dustin Tupper will replace him.
    • Moffatt County hired longtime coach Keith Gille to head its football program, according to the Craig Daily Press.
    • Grandview hired Patrick Chapla as its boys lacrosse coach. He had been an assistant at Mountain Vista, and is also a club coach at 3d Lacrosse. “We are excited to add his passion, experience and love of the game to our program,” Grandview athletic director Jamee Ulitzky wrote in an email.
    • Smoky Hill hired Robert Kennedy as baseball coach, according to the Aurora Sentinel.
    • Eagle Ridge has a new girls basketball coach, according to the Brighton Blade: Vern Rathbun, who has been coaching for more than 30 years.
    • The numbers from the NFHS Network are in from the past school year, and the most popular events were as follows: Arapahoe-Fossil Ridge boys basketball in the 5A tournament; Overland-Denver East boys basketball in the 5A tournament; and the state track meet.
    • It seems like this is a weekly occurrence now, but here’s another reminder to kids that how you act on social media can have a very negative effect on your recruitment.
    • Englewood’s getting a new turf field.
    • Cherry Creek’s gym is “getting a major upgrade.”
    • Fruita Monument wrestler Jacob Seely earned All-American status with his seventh-place finish at a national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota last month.
    • Doherty is holding a golf tournament at Colorado Springs Country Club on Aug. 18, and is seeking teams to participate. That’s the same course where the Class 5A state meet will be held. Interested schools should contact Doherty AD Chris Noll: CHRISTOPHER.NOLL@d11.org.
    • Likewise, Jefferson Academy is seeking schools for its golf invitational on Sept. 2 at Omni Interlocken Golf Club Resort. Contact Jags’ AD Michael Wilson: mwilson@jajags.com.
    • Horizon is inviting schools to its annual Popsicle Run at the Adams County Fairgrounds on Sept. 5. It’s a 4k course, and offers popsicles at the end. Contact: Antonio.Ricciardi@adams12.org.
    • Kim and Branson will co-op in football (ineligible for the playoffs), boys golf, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, as well as track. They will be the Kim Mustangs in all sports but football, where they will compete as the Branson Bearcats.

    Alumni short stuff

    • Heritage alum Shane Opitz, now playing minor league baseball, was interviewed by the Dunedin Blue Jays’ radio network about a recent rehab of an injury, but also spoke about hailing from Colorado. “There’s a lot of talent coming out of Colorado, but people don’t necessarily recognize that because we don’t play year-round,” Opitz said. “There’s not a lot of good weather during the winter time, we’re under snow. But there’s a lot of talent.” A 2010 grad, he’s hitting .280 at Dunedin in 13 games so far this season.
    • Chaparral alum Shane Callahan has been cleared to play immediately for CU following his transfer from Auburn. Here he is in a video speaking with the media after practice. “I’m proud to wear Colorado on my jersey, this is my hometown,” he said. “Excited to have the chance to play for my home state this year!” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
    • Kalen Ballage, a 2013 Falcon graduate, is “turning heads” as Arizona State opens football camp. Coach Todd Graham said he’s “the most impressive freshman running back we’ve ever had. Ever.”
    • Bobby Dalbec, who graduated from Legend in 2013, tore it up at the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer. He had five home runs and 18 RBIs in just 29 games, and hit .228. He also took part in the home run contest during All-Star festivities. Dalbec just completed his freshman season as the starting designated hitter/first baseman and reliever at Arizona. He hit .266 with two home runs and 30 RBIs for the Wildcats, and also had a team-best 2.13 ERA in 22 appearances. Dalbec did tell the Arizona Daily Star that his future is as a position player: “If we really need a guy to be a starter, I’d obviously do it. But I like my future after Arizona to be with the bat. I’m not real big on pitching. I do it and compete, but I prefer to be in the box.”
    • 2003 Golden graduate Mark Melancon, a three-sport star in high school, returned to Colorado as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates late last month, and picked up a save at Coors Field. It was the third save he’d gotten against the Rockies in nine days. “Always fun playing on the field I grew up dreaming of playing on as a Big Leaguer,” Melancon tweeted.
    • This was neat: Former Grandview boys basketball star Eric Garcia pointed out that he (now at Wofford), Denver East alum Dom Collier (CU) and former Regis Jesuit player Josh Perkins (Gonzaga) will all be on national television at the same time during the college basketball season.
  • Final alignment for 2014 football season

The 2014 football league and classification alignment, as set by the football committee, and approved by CLOC and the legislative council.
