Grand Junction was idle last week. No matter, the Tigers have rejoined this week’s CHSAANow.com football poll in Class 5A.

Grand Junction (5-2), last ranked Sept. 9, is No. 10 in the poll. The Tigers took the spot vacated by Arapahoe after the Warriors were upset by Lakewood last week. Up next for GJ: Unbeaten Montrose, which is No. 1 in 4A.

Valor Christian continued to lead the 5A poll, and received 22 of the 23 first-place votes. Fairview remained in second, and Regis Jesuit in third. Cherry Creek is fourth and ThunderRidge fifth after the two schools swapped places.

Columbine (No. 6) and Chatfield (No. 7) also stayed put, while Pomona moved up to No. 8. The Panthers, coming off a win over rival Ralston Valley, have a big showdown with Fairview on Friday afternoon.

Montrose is a unanimous pick atop 4A, and Monarch remained in that poll’s No. 2 spot. Pine Creek bumped up to No. 3, Falcon is fourth and Pueblo South rounds out the top 5.

Broomfield is No. 8 in 4A. (Pam Wagner)

Broomfield (4-2) joined the 4A ranking after beating then-No. 3 Standley Lake last week. The Eagles are eighth. Standley Lake fell to ninth.

Conifer joined the 3A poll. The Lobos are No. 9 following consecutive wins over ranked opponents Lutheran, D’Evelyn and Rifle. Rifle, No. 3 last week, dropped to No. 10 this week.

Gunnison (No. 10) is the lone newcomer to 2A, while 1A added Yuma (No. 9) and Platte Canyon (No. 10). 8-man added Sargent at No. 10, and 6-man added Otis (No. 5).

  • No. 9 Pomona football runs wild against rival Ralston Valley

ARVADA — The shortest distance between two points was a straight line Friday night on the football field at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Pomona broke out its wildcat offensive formation with tailback Chris Marquez taking a direct snap in the Class 5A North Metro League game against cross-town rival Ralston Valley. Marquez racked up 263 yards rushing on 31 carries as the No. 9-ranked Panthers (6-1, 3-0) took a 42-30 victory.

“We’ve got two great running backs, a great offensive line and two great tight ends,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said of the smash-mouth style running attack. “Ralston Valley has skilled kids. Every time we went sideways they made plays. The best way to handle it was go right at them.”

Marquez threw only one pass on the night that fell incomplete. He had much more success weaving through holes provided by Pomona’s massive offensive line. The 5-foot-5 senior had three touchdowns on the night as he went over the 1,300-yard mark on the ground this season.

“(Marquez) is what high school football is all about,” Madden said. “You don’t have to be 6-foot-5. You don’t have to be the fastest guy on the planet. You just have to be a kid with a huge heart and some pretty good God-given quickness. You can be a special player.”

The Panthers jumped out to a 28-0 lead, scoring on four of their first five possessions. Senior Lukas Russell scored his first of three touchdowns for Pomona late in the first half with a 15-yard score, making the score 21-0 at halftime.

After a 69-yard kickoff return to start the second half, Russell scored again on a 27-yard scamper to widen the lead to 28-0. He finished with 14 carries for 93 yards.

Fittingly, Marquez scored on a 27-yard touchdown run on his final carry of the night to cap off Pomona’s fifth-straight victory.

The victory marked a little revenge for the Panthers against their rival. Ralston Valley defeated Pomona in the regular season last year and also eliminated the Panthers in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

“I told my whole team to remember how it felt losing to Ralston Valley in the playoffs,” Marquez said. “We came out and executed.”

The Mustangs (4-3, 1-2) got their offense going in the second half. Senior quarterback Josh Knipp finished the night 30-for-45 passing for 353 yards and two touchdowns. Senior John Morales was Knipp’s favorite target catching 10 balls for 115 yards.

Despite the offensive outburst after halftime, Ralston Valley fell short on mounting a complete comeback.

“We’ve got to start earlier,” Knipp said. “We’ve got to start like we played in the second half.”

One positive for Ralston Valley was the return of junior running back Andrew Wingard. After missing the previous two games because of injury, Wingard was back on the field and had a solid night. He finished with 79 yards on the ground, including two rushing touchdowns. He also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Knipp for the final score of the game.

“(Wingard) makes a ton of big plays for this offense,” Knipp said. “He kind of makes this offense tick. It’s great to have him back.”

Ralston Valley faces rival in Arvada West at 7 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 17, at NAAC before closing out the regular season on the road against Legacy on Oct. 25.

Pomona has another critical conference game next week that will likely decide the 5A North Metro League title. The Panthers square off against No. 2 Fairview (6-0, 3-0) at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at NAAC. The Knights are the lone undefeated team remaining in 5A.

“It will be fun,” Madden said of next week’s game against Fairview.

Palisade edged then-No. 1 Rifle last Friday after rallying from a 27-14 halftime deficit. Tuesday, Palisade is on top of CHSAANow.com’s Class 3A football poll.

The Bulldogs received all 13 first-place votes in moving up from No. 2 taking over at No. 1. Rifle dropped to third. Unbeaten Coronado, which has the most wins in the state at 7-0, is second.

The 3A ranking added Roosevelt (No. 10) this week.

In the 5A poll, Fairview has moved up to No. 2 from No. 3.

The Knights (5-0) are 5A’s lone remaining unbeaten team, and got one first-place vote. Valor Christian got the other 23 and remained atop the ranking.

Regis Jesuit is third this week, and is followed by No. 4 ThunderRidge and No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Columbine rejoined the 5A ranking at sixth after its wild win over then-No. 2 Chatfield. Chatfield dropped to seventh this week.

Arapahoe is eighth, Pomona is ninth and Cherokee Trail fell to tenth after its loss to Cherry Creek last week.

Montrose, idle last week, remained in 4A’s No. 1 spot. Monarch moved up to No. 2, and Standley Lake is No. 3 this week. That ranking added Pueblo South at No. 8 and Durango at No. 10.

  • Widespread changes as Valor Christian takes over atop 5A football poll

The weekend’s turmoil has bled over into CHSAANow.com’s football polls.

Though, when a total of 17 ranked teams lose in a week — including the No. 1s in classes 5A, 4A and 3A — it’s not hard to see change coming. So, yes, there are new teams atop 5A (Valor Christian), 4A (Montrose) and 3A (Rifle).

But the change didn’t only affect the top. In 5A, where three of the top four teams lost last week, that meant Chatfield, Fairview, Cherokee Trail and Regis Jesuit all made big jumps.

Valor Christian leads the 5A poll for the second time this season. The Eagles are 4-1, but unbeaten against Colorado competition this season, and received 21 of the 24 first-place votes.

Chatfield moved up to No. 2 from No. 5, Fairview went from No. 7 to No. 3 and Cherokee Trail moved into fourth from sixth. Regis Jesuit, which last week knocked off then-No. 1 ThunderRidge, went from No. 9 to No. 5.

ThunderRidge dropped to sixth, and is followed by Grandview and Cherry Creek.

The 5A poll added two new teams this week: No. 9 Pomona and No. 10 Arapahoe.

In 4A, Montrose takes over following its come-from-behind win over then-No. 1 Monarch. The Indians were a unanimous No. 1 pick, getting all 21 first-place votes.

Falcon is No. 2 this week, and Monarch dropped to No. 3. Loveland stayed at No. 4, Montbello moved up one place to round out the top-5.

Pueblo Centennial (No. 9) and Longmont (No. 10) are 4A’s newcomers this week.

Rifle takes over atop the 3A ranking following Silver Creek’s loss to Frederick. New to 3A this week are Mead (No. 7) and D’Evelyn (No. 10).

Brush continued to lead 2A’s poll, which added Bennett at No. 10.

Likewise, Buena Vista remained atop in 1A. That poll added Paonia (No. 8) and Jefferson (No. 9). Jefferson’s addition is especially noteworthy because the Saints were a combined 3-85 from 2004-12.

  • Pomona upsets Standley Lake boys soccer in double overtime

If Monday at the North Area Athletic Complex is any indication, the Class 5A Jeffco League boys’ soccer conference title race will be quite a ride.

The Standley Lake Gators entered its league game against rival Pomona with an impressive 7-0-0 mark and No. 6 ranking in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A soccer poll. While on paper it looked like a mismatch, the Panthers pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime victory to improve to 2-4-0, 1-1-0 in league.

“Anything can happen in Jeffco 5A,” Pomona coach Mike Askin said after the dramatic win. “We needed this to get back in the running.”

The game-winning goal was scored in the 94th minute off the foot of Pomona junior Marcello Laguera. Aided by a strong north wind at his back, Laguera’s shot from well outside the goal box sailed over the head of a leaping Standley Lake goalie Ryan Fernandez and into the back of the net.

“I saw that wind and the ball just took a skip,” Askin said of Laguera’s goal. “Elements are part of the game.”

It was the first goal since Pomona junior Jake Semple tied the game at 1 in the 27th minute of the first half.

The Panthers had a couple of chances for the go-ahead goal in the second half. The best scoring opportunity came in the 64th minute when senior Dillon Fee ripped a shot off the far post.

“I thought everyone put in an extra effort to win today,” Fee said. “There are a lot of good teams (in 5A Jeffco). They are young and fresh like us. We can move the ball around and showed we can play in this league too.”

Standley Lake (7-1-0, 1-1-0) now must rebound from its first setback of the season. The Gators haven’t won a boys’ soccer league title since 1990.

Sophomore Kyler Fowkes scored his eighth goal of the season for the Gators in the 11th minute, but Pomona adjusted to a four-back system to bottle up Standley Lake’s leading scorer for the majority of the game.

“I think it will humble us a little bit,” Fowkes said of the loss.

Standley Lake coach Jeff Vigil expected his team to have a target on its back entering league play after the hot start. He also believes his squad will respond positively after the setback.

“This program the last four years has been build on hard work, teamwork, being a family and being dedicated to each other,” Vigil said. “I think until you face adversity you truly don’t know if you are going to succeed in the big picture.”

The next league test for Standley Lake will be an important one against Chatfield (6-2, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Lakewood Memorial Field. Pomona’s next conference tilt is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at NAAC against Bear Creek.

“This league is just crazy,” Vigil said. “Nobody is going to go undefeated in league.”
