Hitting the road isn’t always a sign of impending doom when it comes to basketball playoffs. That certainly turned out to be the case for Pine Creek as it made its way west on I-70 for the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball state tournament.

The Eagles entered the tournament as the 39 seed, but it didn’t deter them as they left the western side of Colorado with a 29-26 win over Grand Junction Central. They’ll stay a little closer to home on Saturday when they head to Arvada to take on No. 7 Ralston Valley.

Pine Creek jumped out to a 20-8 lead at halftime but the offense quickly slowed down in the second half. Leah Redding knocked down a big 3-pointer for Central early in the fourth quarter to cut the Eagles’ lead to eight points.

Pine Creek made its way to the free throw line where Brynae Stewart made two and Jordyn Gutierrez made one to keep the game just out of Central’s reach.

  • Arvada West girls basketball sinks conference win over Dakota Ridge

ARVADA — Amanda Neff is making a name for herself while following in the footsteps at of her older brothers — Thomas and Luke — at Arvada West High School.

“It’s cool to have my brothers and stuff,” Amanda said of her two brothers that had stellar careers at A-West before both played at the University of Denver. “But I want to make my own name too.”

Neff had her breakout game Saturday afternoon on the Wildcats’ home court against Dakota Ridge. The sophomore poured in a career-high 29 points to lead A-West to a 64-47 victory.

“She (Neff) had a complete basketball game today,” A-West coach Brady Meeks said. “That’s what I’ve been expecting from her all year. It’s nice to see that come out in a big league win for us today. It wasn’t just her scoring today. She did a great job on defense and gobbled up her (rebounds) like she normally does. She was making the right basketball decisions.”

A-West (11-6, 2-1 in Class 5A Jeffco) had a decent first half, but trailed Dakota Ridge (7-9, 1-2) at halftime — 25-22. The Wildcats took the lead early in the third quarter when they scored five points over the span of one second.

Sophomore Jasmyn Williams, who hit her career-high with 18 points, made a layup and was fouled. Williams missed the free throw, but junior Madison Manson grabbed the rebound, scored, was fouled and was able to convert her 3-point play.

“We’ve had a hard time getting to 40 points in some games this year,” Meeks said. “Amanda had a great game and Jasmyn really stepped up her game as well. At halftime we really talked about how we were we going to win the game and it was by slowing down a little bit.”

A key 12-0 run in the fourth quarter put the game away. A-West made a living at the foul line in the second half. The Wildcats finished going 19-for-27 from the line after halftime.

A-West outscored Dakota Ridge 42-22 in the second half.

“Credit goes to the girls,” Meeks said of the Wildcats outscoring the Eagles by 20 points in the second half. “They adjusted to just the simple execution items.”

Neff nearly hit the 30-point mark. She missed a free throw in the final minute that would have given her 30 points.

“I knew this was going to be a tough game and I knew we had to get going early,” Neff said after her breakout game that included two 3-pointers and going 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. “I just started scoring in the flow of the game.”

Dakota Ridge senior Emily Doolittle poured in 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half to keep the Eagles within striking distance. However, it wasn’t enough to get the road victory.

“I think this is the first time we’ve got more than one league win in a few years,” said Meeks, who is in his second year at the helm of A-West’s girls basketball program. “I think the game against Lakewood proved we aren’t the doormat of the league anymore. I think we are moving in the right direction.”

Lakewood edged A-West 56-50 early in the week, but Meeks took it as a positive that the Wildcats are a team on the rise and able to compete with some of the historically good programs in 5A Jeffco.

It’s clear the youngest Neff will be a big part of the growth that is yet to come.

“I’m really happy that this year our team and program has improved a lot,” Neff said.

A-West returns to the court at Bear Creek on Wednesday next week. Dakota Ridge has a non-league game at home against Legacy on Monday before getting back into conference play at home versus Chatfield on Friday, Feb. 7.

  • Arvada West girls hoops off to best start in 5 years

ARVADA — It wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but Arvada West’s home-opener victory Wednesday night marked the best start for the program in five years.

The Wildcats (3-1 record) held Boulder (1-4) to just eight made field goals in A-West’s 35-30 victory. Still, A-West coach Brady Meeks knows there is plenty of room for improvement as the Wildcats struggled offensively.

“Sometimes winning ugly is a good thing,” said Meeks, who is in his third year at the helm of the program. “We just need to learn from this and get better because when we start playing more talented teams we aren’t going to get away with that.”

A-West held a 19-12 lead at halftime, but couldn’t extend its lead in the third quarter. Both teams sputtered offensively after halftime. The lone field goal made in the third quarter came by A-West junior Alexis Folks with less than a minute to play in the period.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” Meeks admitted. “Sometimes when you don’t shoot the ball well you have to do the little things.”

The biggest offensive play for A-West came with just less than 2:30 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. A-West’s leading scorer — sophomore Amanda Neff — on the season had a nifty pass inside to senior Calayia Vickles for an easy layup.

“That was a monster play,” Meeks said of the assist from Neff to Vickles that put the Wildcats up 31-25 with 2:26 to play. “That play from Amanda to Calaiya was monster for us.”

Sophomore Jasmyn Williams finished with a team-high 9 points for A-West, including going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the second half. Freshman Payton Reed had a pair of big free throws with 35 seconds left seal the victory.

“It was important because I felt after last season a lot of people doubted us,” Vickles said. “To get a home win was really important for us.”

Boulder senior Tessa Van Bussum hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough for the Panthers. Sophomore Ella Bartsch led all scorers with 11 points. Junior Abbie Gillach was held below her 11.5 points per game average.

“We really worked on shutting down (Abbie Gillach) that was our main goal,” Vickles said of holding Gillach to 9 points.

A-West has three straight road games ahead. The Wildcats begin with a trip to Fort Collins to face Rocky Mountain on Tuesday, Dec. 17. A-West already has a win over the Lobos this season. The Wildcats took a 52-37 win over Rocky Mountain in A-West’s season opener Dec. 4 at the Mountain Vista/Rock Canyon Tournament.

“It’s a win, but we’ve got to get back to work tomorrow,” Meeks said.

Vickles said a big focus this season is to improve in conference play. The Wildcats haven’t been above .500 in Class 5A Jeffco League play since going 14-2 back in the 2011-12 season. A-West has just won one league game the past two years.

“It all starts on how we play during pre-season,” Vickles said preparing for conference play after Winter Break. “Building our team camaraderie for sure is our biggest thing this year.”
