  • Football roundup: No. 7 Arapahoe escapes Gateway’s upset bid with goal-line stand

Arapahoe made a stop at the goal-line on the final play of the game to hold off an upset bid from Gateway and win 28-24.

The Warriors, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, trailed nearly the whole game but rallied to take the lead late in the fourth quarter and then held on to keep their perfect record intact. They are now 6-0 for the first time since 2005.

Nick Thompson scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run with 2:52 to play.

Gateway jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, and was up 24-14 at the break.

But Arapahoe’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, and the offense slowly chipped away.

    4A: (7) Dakota Ridge 30, (9) Ponderosa 27

Harper Silliman kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired to lift the seventh-ranked Eagles (5-1) to their best win of the season so far.

It turns out Silliman is Dakota Ridge’s backup kicker. The starter was out with a concussion.

“Harper had made two extra points earlier in the game, and missed a field goal earlier in the game. And I told him, ‘You’re going to be a hero tonight. Keep your head in there. You’re going to have a chance to win it,’” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It was a 44-yard field goal, and it probably went 44-and-a-quarter yards.

“We really felt at that point (of the final attempt) that we were either going to win it or we were going to go to overtime, and so we let him give it a shot. He came through. Big-time, clutch kick for us.”

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Ponderosa grabbed a 24-19 lead at halftime. The lead grew to 27-17, but Dakota Ridge answered with a rushing touchdown from Jeremy Lujan to make it 27-24 with 4:38 to go in the third quarter. A field goal late in the third quarter tied the game.

The teams were scoreless until the fourth quarter — until Silliman’s kick.

Lujan had four touchdowns for Dakota Ridge.

    3A: (9) Lewis-Palmer 63, Canon City 48

The Rangers won a wild one with all kinds of offense.

The two teams combined for 1,184 yards of total offense — the 11th-highest combined total in a single game — and dotted the record book with new entries. Ultimately, Lewis-Palmer’s ground attack won out over Canon City’s passing offense.

Lewis-Palmer rushed for 547 yards and nine touchdowns as a team. Of that, Nick Pavlik had 404 yards and seven touchdowns. The seven TDs are tied for the fifth-most in state history, while the 404 yards are No. 14 all-time.

There’s more: Canon City quarterback Luke Nethercot tied the state record, set just last week against Lewis-Palmer, with 41 completions on 50 attempts. He threw for 461 yards and six touchdowns.

    Lewis-Palmer is now 5-1.

    4A: Pueblo West 66, Palmer 21

Pueblo West’s Devyn Morgan had seven rushing touchdowns and 401 yards in Pueblo West’s win. Again, the seven touchdowns are tied for the fifth-most in state history.

    1A: (3) Paonia 34, (9) Meeker 30

Panoia pulled out the close win to move to 5-1.

“It was a fun night here in Paonia. They had a great gameplan ready for us, and it worked,” Paonia coach Brent McRae told the Scoreboard Show. “It was back-and-forth, and you just kind of had to hold your breath there are the end.”

    [divider]

    2A: (4) Platte Valley 37, (5) Brush 0

Platte Valley jumped out to a 29-0 halftime lead, and cruised from there. The Broncos are now 5-1, and have won five in a row.

“When you lose some of the skill kids we did in the past, some explosive ones, we had to replace them,” Platte Valley coach Troy Hoffman told the Scoreboard Show. “Tanner Schwindt coming in as a quarterback, being a senior, a lot of his time was in the backup role or in some other spot duty, so we had to find a way for him to gain some experience early on, and really just gain some confidence. That’s really, truly, what he’s done.

“Where we are right now, and what we’re doing, I’m very proud of where Platte Valley football is.”

    [divider]

    2A: (2) Bayfield 27, (9) Gunnison 7

Bayfield led 19-7 at halftime, then added to that in the second half to pull out the important top-10 win.

The lead was actually 19-0 in the second quarter before Gunnison got a late score just before the half.

There was some shakeup to the Class 4A football rankings on Monday, with Ponderosa and Aurora Central joining the poll.

The Mustangs (4-1) are back in CHSAANow.com’s 4A ranking at No. 9, while Aurora Central (5-0) joined for the first time at No. 10.

Pine Creek continued to lead the 4A poll following its big win over then-No. 2 Vista Ridge, and is now a unanimous pick with all 17 first-place votes. The Eagles, two-time defending champions, have won 30 games in a row.

Longmont returned to its No. 2 spot after dropping to No. 3 last week, and Windsor is up to third. Vista Ridge fell to fourth, and Greeley West remained in the top 5.

Also this week, there is a new No. 1 team in 8-man, where Sedgwick County has ascended to the top despite having fewer first-place votes than former No. 1 Dayspring Christian. Both teams are 5-0.

The 8-man ranking added Holly (No. 7) and Dove Creek (No. 8) this week.

The other top-ranked teams around the classes include Cherry Creek (5A), Pueblo East (3A), Kent Denver (2A), Buena Vista (1A) and Fleming (6-man).

There were no new teams added to the 5A poll, though Pomona did return to the top 5 at No. 5. Regis Jesuit also jumped Valor Christian for the No. 3 spot.

In 3A, Lewis Palmer (No. 9) was the lone newcomer, but the 2A and 1A polls did not add any new teams. The 6-man ranking added Cheyenne Wells (No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Boys soccer rankings: Kent Denver back on top of 3A

Kent Denver has regained the top spot of the Class 3A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings after relinquishing the spot last week.

The Sun Devils regained their position thanks to a 10-0 win over Bishop Mechebeuf on Friday.

Boulder remained in the top spot in 5A after playing their way into that ranking last week. Two new teams joined the 5A poll as Rampart made an impressive jump up to No. 6 and Arapahoe earned enough points to take over the No. 10 spot.

Evergreen hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 4A thanks to outscoring opponents 5-0 last week. Like 5A, two new teams joined the 4A poll as Skyline comes in at No. 6 with Skyview landing at No. 10.

Along with Kent Denver regaining the No. 1 spot in 3A, Jefferson Academy and Colorado Academy each jumped four spots with the Jaguars coming in at No. 4 and the Mustangs climbing to No. 5.

Vail Mountain is the lone newcomer to the 3A rankings at No. 9 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Boys soccer rankings: All three classes get a new No. 1 team

Three new teams stand atop this week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings, meaning there’s a new No. 1 team in each classification.

Boulder (Class 5A), Evergreen (4A) and KIPP Collegiate (3A) all now lead their respective classes.

In 5A, Boulder moved up due in part to former No. 1 Broomfield’s loss to Mountain Range in overtime last week. The Panthers got eight of the 10 first-place votes to take over.

Fort Collins also moved up, to No. 2, as did No. 3 ThunderRidge and No. 4 Arvada West. Fairview rounds out the top-5. ThunderRidge jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 after an impressive week in which they outscored their opponents 11-3 in three games.

Broomfield fell to sixth, Cherry Creek is seventh and Rocky Mountain is up to No. 8.

Aurora Central and Far Northeast are this week’s newcomers to the 5A poll, landing at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

The top seeds from last week’s CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings all fell out of place this week. In Class 5A, Broomfield was topped by Mountain Range in overtime making Boulder the new No. 1.

Former 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain was upset at the hands of Pueblo West, which helped Evergreen shoot to the top spot.

The occupants of last week’s 4A poll remain the same, but with Cheyenne Mountain falling out of the top spot, there was some shakeup in the order. Valor Christian jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 and Littleton landed at No. 6 this week, up two spots from their ranking last week.

After recording a 3-0 win over Kent Denver Thursday, the Kent Denver Sun Devils played Fountain Valley to a 1-1 draw, allowing KIPP to take over the top spot in 3A.

Other big moves were made in 3A as Faith Christian made the jump from No. 6 to No. 3. There were also three newcomers to the 3A ranks as DSST Stapleton (No. 5), Jefferson Academy (No. 8) and Fountain Valley — fresh off its tie with Kent Denver — (No. 10) all joined the poll this week

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Aurora Central hires Peeples as new football coach

AURORA — Aurora Central has hired Travis Peeples as its next football coach, athletic director Dan Lliteras said on Thursday.

Peeples had been the offensive at Greeley West, where he helped turn the Spartans around from 1-9 in 2013 to 8-3 last season.

“We’re really getting our whole program developed from bottom to top,” Lliteras said Thursday at the CHSAA office. “We’ve got a big, big chore ahead of us.”

Peeples emerged from a group of 25 candidates, including 10 finalists, Lliteras said.

“I think probably what brought us to him more than anything was his preparedness,” Lliteras said. “He knew more about us than some of my interview committee people did. Very well prepared. Really focuses on the details. Understands how to establish a program, not just, ‘I’m the varsity coach.’

“He really is genuinely concerned with, ‘How are we going to develop a full-blown program, top-to-bottom?’ That’s one of my big, big pet peeves. If you’re coming in here to just focus and get radar vision on a varsity level, you probably aren’t going to last with me very long. … He had a plan in place for the whole thing.”

Peeples replaces Taylor Calvert, who was left go after three seasons as coach. Calvert was 6-24 during his time leading the program, including 2-8 in 2014.

At Greeley West, Peeples’ offense was primarily a rushing attack, though quarterback AJ Lopez did throw 11 touchdowns last season.

Peeples has decades of other experience as an assistant elsewhere, including in Florida. He played college football and was a quarterback.

“He’s been around the game his whole life. That’s all he’s done is football, football, football,” Lliteras said. “He really brings a lot of experience to the table with what we need to get done.”

Aurora Central is currently playing as a Class 4A program despite an enrollment of 2,198 students. The Trojans dropped down a class due to an inability to compete prior to last season.

Since the start of the 2008 season, Aurora Central is 10-59, and hasn’t won more than two games in a single year. The program’s last winning season came in 2007, when it went 7-3.

Lliteras’ expectation, along with developing what he calls a “full linear program,” is that the team regain its spot in 5A.

“We’ve got a ton of kids,” he said. “If you walk into Aurora Central and walk down our halls, there’s about 2,000 kids in the building. About every tenth kid you walk by is 6-2, 240. Every other kid you walk by has no idea why he’s not playing football.

“I’ve got enough kids in building, if we can get these kids on the right page and get them going forward, we’ve got a lot of potential sitting in that building. It’s a diamond in the rough. All we’ve got to do is get going in the right direction. That’s my expectation of him is to get this program headed uphill so we can get where we need to go, get back to the 5A level.”

The hope is to return to 5A as soon as possible.

“The goal is to compete with your peers and all the other schools in our conference are 5A schools and here we are playing 4A football,” Lliteras said. “To me, that’s unacceptable. But it’s what we have to do to get competitive and to rebuild our program. That’s what we’re going to do.

“We’ve got one more year in that cycle, and then my hope is we’re back up to 5A again. I’m going to petition for that. I’ve got a meeting with (Peeples, on Thursday) afternoon, and that’s part of that meeting.

    “We’re off to the races.”
