  • Jeffco seniors shine as Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Games return

LAKEWOOD — It was one final time to play basketball with your friends and even some old foes on the hardwood Thursday night at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse.

“Getting to play with my teammates (McKenna Nichols and Brooklyn Seymour) one more time and play with people who have been competitors for four years was nice,” Ralston Valley senior Sydney Bevington said after the conclusion of the girls’ Jeffco High School Senior Basketball game. “We needed redemption from that last game. It felt good to get out there one last time.”

Bevington didn’t what her final memory of her stellar prep basketball career be Ralston Valley’s Class 5A state quarterfinal loss to Highland Ranch on March 16. The versatile Mustang led the White squad to a 70-58 victory.

Bevington scored a game-high 24 points. Green Mountain’s Courtney Hank, Columbine’s Adrienne Harnum and Nichols each had 10 points in the victory that was coached by Green Mountain’s girls basketball coach Darren Pitzner.

Golden senior Erika Dowell had a huge final quarter for the White team. The Demon scored all of her seven points in the final quarter.

It wasn’t an easy victory for the White squad that had a solid height advantage on the Blue squad. The White led 28-13 early in the second quarter, but the Blue team coached by Arvada West’s girls basketball coach Brady Meeks chipped away at the lead to keep within striking distance.

“The White team was good. They definitely had the height,” Arvada West senior Alexis Folks said. “I think we did a good job battling with them.”

Folks led the Blue squad with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. She was the only player in double-digits for the Blue team, but the squad had 10 different players score as they tried to rally from the double-digit first-half deficit.

“It was great having the team come together even a lot didn’t know each other,” Folks said. “We came together and worked hard.”

The White team buckled down defensively in the final minutes holding the Blue scoreless for the final two minutes after the White’s lead was trimmed to 63-58 with 2 minutes to play.

“They knocked down a lot of 3-pointers and then we kind of stopped playing defense,” Bevington said. “We figured it out and got the win.”

Bevington and Folks were named the MVPs of the game.

“It was a great experience. Especially being able to play with my teammate (A-West senior Madison Manson) one last time and to have (Meeks) coach us one last time,” Folks said. “It was really fun and a great experience.”

The annual senior basketball games that have been put on by the Gold Crown Foundation since 2018 was canceled last season right as the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown all sports around the world.

The crowd was limited this year and everyone inside the Gold Crown Fieldhouse wore masks, but being back on the court was the most important thing for these seniors to close out their high school careers.

“It was the best four years of my life playing with my teammates,” said Bevington, who will continue her basketball career at Santa Clara University. “My coaches and teammates were always there for me. I’m headed off, but I’ll be back. I’m maintain those friendships for the rest of my life.”

  • Video: Jeffco wrestling teams take 7 individual state titles

While the venue was different this year for the 2021 state wrestling championships, Jeffco wrestling teams from Columbine, Chatfield and Pomona came home from Pueblo with a load of first-place medals along with the Class 5A boys wrestling team title. Columbine seniors Jack Forbes (195 pounds) and Zach Schraeder (285 pounds) both repeated as state champions. Chatfield senior Jacob Badger (182 pounds) finished off a perfect 23-0 record by winning his first state title.
Pomona needed to rally in the place matches to overcome Ponderosa for the Class 5A team title. The Panthers claimed its third straight team title, fifth in six years and eight team title since 2000. Pomona had four individual state champions with sophomore Jakob Romero (120 pounds), junior Elijah Olguin (126 pounds), junior Daniel Cardenas (145 pounds) and senior Franklin Cruz (220 pounds). Cruz claimed his third state championship title. Cardenas also won his third and has a chance to join the elite 4-time state championship club next year. Cardenas would actually be the first Pomona wrestler to become a 4-time state champion.
Jefferson had three state placers in the Class 3A state tournament. Juniors Daniel Soto (113 pounds) and Angelo Lozado (126 pound) both took fourth place. Senior Alberto Zelaya battled his way to a third-place finish at 170 points.

  • Chatfield makes history as first girls wrestling state champion

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — A year ago to the date, it felt like the world was ending. But after a night of tough competition and well-earned medals, high school wrestling in Colorado indeed stepped into a brand new world.

Two years ago, the CHSAA Legislative Council sanctioned girls wrestling as the newest sport. At the Southwest Motors Event Center in Pueblo, a year after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Chatfield became the very first face of that sport as the Chargers claimed the first official state championship.

“This has been the best thing we could ask for,” coach Sandra George said. “We’ve been having duals all season the. To just come into a tournament and fight from the beginning was special. At regionals we had to fight to get here and here we had to fight to be on top.”

Overall, the Chargers finished with five placers and totaled 91 points. Jeffco League rival Pomona took second as a team with 65.

The championship night for Chatfield was highlighted by the 127-pound championship performance from Savannah Cosme.

Her 9-3 decision over Doherty’s Sarah Savidge was the Chargers only gold medal of the night, but it served as the perfect representation of the effort the overall team gave since the start of the season in mid-January.

“It means a lot to me,” Cosme said. “I love my team. We put in a lot of hard work together. To all come together and be able to win this is really amazing.”

Janessa George took second in 105 while Journey Ruiz (111) and Taylor Miess (136) each finished third.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

But the real winners of the night were each every single girl that stepped on a mat; from the very first 100-pound match of the day to the 215-pound championship. It will be something that each girl can point to in five years as a significant moment in Colorado school sports history and identify their role in laying the foundation.

“I’m going to look back and see that we made history,” Cosme said. “We’ve created something where people can continue to come and continue to grow. We’re going to make Colorado one of the top states for girls wrestling.”

The Chargers will have the unenviable burden of heading into the 2020-21 season with a target on its back as the first defending state champion.

But with the way the girls competed throughout the one-day, it’s a challenge their eager to take on and they’re anxious to get back on the mat, continue competing and using every opportunity to get better.

“My girls are such a great group of girls,” George said. “They’re appreciative of everything we’ve worked for. It’s amazing. We’re all on Cloud 9 and we’re going to keep wrestling through the summer. Next year will be even better because hopefully we’ll do this at (Ball Arena).”

While the future of the event’s home has time to get sorted out, one very important fact is clear: the evolution of girls wrestling in Colorado has only just begun.

The future is bright, but the historic night that saw the first state champion crowned will forever serve as a launching pad for future generations of student-athletes.

  • Video: Wrestling history made in Pueblo

The first CHSAA sanctioned girls wrestling state tournament took place Thursday, March 11, at Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo. Chatfield racked up 91 team points to take the state team title. The Chargers’ team — Janessa George, Journey Ruiz, SaVannah Cosme, Taylor Miess and Isabel Garcia — all placed in the top-4 of either weight class. Cosme finished her undefeated season 20-0 to claim the 127-pound title.
Pomona’s strong trio — Perseus Gomez, Jayden Lange and Alicen Dillard — guided the Panthers to a second-place finish in the team standings. Gomez won the 105-pound title and Dillard was the state champion at 136 pounds.

  • Columbine girls hoops finishes strong with win over No. 13 Chatfield

LITTLETON — It’s not how you start the season, it’s how you finish.

Columbine girls basketball team had a tough start to the season missing the first week of the regular season due to a COVID quarantine. The Rebels held a 4-4 record after back-to-back Class 5A Jeffco League losses to Valor Christian and Chatfield two weeks ago.

However, the Rebels (8-4 record) grabbed its fourth straight victory Friday night with a come-from-behind 44-36 road victory in the rematch against rival Chatfield, ranked No. 13 in the CHSAANow.com 5A girls basketball rankings.

“You never know what you are going to get walking in here,” Columbine coach Greg Bolding Jr. said. “They (Chatfield) is missing two of their big players and I think mentality we weren’t ready for that.”

The Chargers (11-3) were without leading scorer Grace Talbot and fellow junior Peyton Shepard in the regular-season finale for both squads. However, Chatfield held a 20-10 lead when senior Madison Shepard buried a 3-pointer midway through the second quarter.

Shepard and junior Millie Hubbell combined for 18 points in the first half to pace the Chargers, but the Rebels went on a 9-0 run to close out the final 3 minutes of the first half to cut Chatfield’s lead to 23-22 at halftime.

“It was just desire,” Bolding said of the Rebels turning things around after falling behind 20-10. “Our base is our defense. We had to be more disciplined on the defensive side. We had some young kids come in and change the tempo a little.”

Junior Jessica Bollwahn was the huge difference maker for Columbine. The junior forward scored a season-high 19 points to bolt the Rebels past the Chargers.

Bollwahn’s biggest basket came with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter. The junior spun the ball off the backboard for a layup from a tough angle and was fouled. She completed the 3-point play to give the Rebels their largest lead of the game at 40-27.

“Honestly, when it went in I was like, ‘Thank god.’ We really needed that,” Bollwahn said of the 3-point play. “We have really been focusing on finishing our shots.”

Bollwahn had one more strong basket inside the paint before senior Adrienne Harnum had a steal and layup to seal the victory for the Rebels.

“I’ve been on her about the finish mindset,” Bolding said of Bollwahn. “It took the air of out Chatfield I thought when that went in. She leads us on and off the court.”

Shepard finished with a game-high 13 points for Chatfield. Hubbell finished with four 3-pointers for her dozen points off the bench for the Chargers. The hope is Talbot will be back for the playoffs next week.

The Chargers and Rebels now await the state brackets, which are scheduled to be released by CHSAA on Monday, March 8.

“Of course you are hoping for a home game no matter what,” Bolding said of the playoff seeding. “We have no control over that. I’ve been preaching to these kids to play defense. We can control that.”

The state bracket was trimmed down to a 32-team tournament in 5A this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shortened season. The state tournament is normally a 48-team bracket with the top 16 seeds getting first-round byes. There will be no first-round byes this season. All teams will have first-round games Tuesday, March 9.

“Beating Chatfield on their home court is a big goal for us,” Bollwahn said. “This good mentality and adrenaline will help us going into playoffs.”
