  • Girls basketball rankings: Top teams stay put after the break

    Highlands Ranch Legend girls basketball
Highlands Ranch maintained its grip on the No. 1 spot in the 5A girls basketball poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Consistency would be the best word to describe the CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings this week. While some new teams played their way into some of the polls, the overall tops teams continued to do what top teams tend to do: win.

Highlands Ranch fought off a good effort from defending Class 5A champion Broomfield to maintain their spot atop the 5A rankings.

The close game did get the attention of quite a few voters as it helped Broomfield jump two spots to land at No. 4.

No new teams were able to crack their way into this week’s 5A rankings.

For the most part, the 4A poll looks about the same as it did going into the winter break. Sand Creek remains the No. 1 team in the class and Mesa Ridge, Valor Christian, Longmont and Pueblo West all kept their spots at 2-5 respectively.

Holy Family made the biggest jump in 4A, gaining two spots to come in at No. 6.

Pueblo East broke into the 4A rankings at No. 10.

All 10 teams from the previous 3A rankings remained in this week’s poll. Pages Springs holds on to their spot at No. 1 with Sterling keeping a firm grasp on the No. 2 position.

Manitou Springs regained some first-place votes after beating a couple of top-10 teams in Lutheran and Lamar last week.

Moffat County jumped two spots to land at No. 7, the biggest jump for any team in 3A.

The 2A poll saw more changes than any other class this week. Yuma is still firmly in the No. 1 position, but Haxtun jumped two spots to land at No. 5.

There were three new teams to the rankings as Soroco (No. 7), Ignacio (No. 9) and Evangelical Christian (No. 10) all played their way into the top 10.

Despite not playing a game since Dec. 17, Sangre De Cristo maintains the top position in the 1A rankings. Kit Carson, who received a couple of first-place votes remains at No. 2.

Heritage Christian jumped into the 1A poll at No. 8 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

No. 3-seeded Dawson moved on to the Class 2A girls soccer semifinals with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Colorado Rocky Mountain on Friday evening.

The Mustangs seized the win on the strength of a 2-0 first-half lead on a night when the rain just seemed to keep coming … and coming.

Hannah Isenhart gave Dawson a lead 20 minutes in, and Morgan Powers added a second on a penalty kick 13 minutes later following a handball in the box.

The game was delayed a half-hour from its original 5 p.m. kickoff.

Denver Christian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, and then continued its ways in the second half.

The Crusaders went on to win 4-0.

    (2) Front Range Christian 5, (7) Evangelical Christian 0

Front Range Christian took a 3-0 halftime lead, then cruised to the win to advance to the state semifinals.

The Falcons are now 14-1-1, with a lone loss this season to Vail Mountain, the 2A tournament’s top seed.

    (1) Vail Mountain 4, (9) Clear Creek 0

The top seed moved on with a convincing win in the quarterfinals.

The win sets up a rematch with Denver Christian, which is the only team to beat Vail Mountain this season. That game was a 4-1 Denver Christian win on March 27.

  • Rock Canyon, The Classical Academy new top-ranked teams in girls soccer

Rock Canyon is the new No. 1 team in this week’s Class 5A girls soccer ranking. The Jaguars received six of the 10 first-place votes from CHSAANow.com’s voters.

But that turned out to be just the start of the upheaval in 5A, where five teams received at least one first-place vote.

Arapahoe jumped from No. 9 to No. 2, and four newcomers joined the poll this week. Those new teams: No. 4 ThunderRidge, No. 6 Broomfield, No. 7 Grandview and No. 10 Fairview.

Mountain Vista is No. 3 this week, and Pine Creek is No. 5.

Things weren’t much more stable in 4A, where The Classical Academy vaulted from unranked to No. 1. Evergreen went from sixth to second, Valor Christian from eighth to third and Ponderosa from unranked to fourth.

Wheat Ridge (No. 9) also joined the 4A poll this week.

The No. 1 teams in 3A (Colorado Academy) and 2A (Front Range Christian) did stay put this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Columbine opens the year as the No. 1 team in Class 5A girls soccer. (Dennis Pleuss)

Defending champions are on top of three of CHSAANow.com’s four preseason girls soccer rankings. The fourth? Well, it’s a new classification this season.

Columbine (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A) are all coming off of titles last season, and all opened the year at No. 1 when the poll was released on Monday.

Front Range Christian leads the first-ever 2A poll. The Falcons made the 3A state tournament field last season.

In 5A, Columbine got four of the 10 first-place votes to edge No. 2 Mountain Vista. Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon (No. 3) and Pine Creek (No. 5) each received two first-place votes.

Ralston Valley, last year’s runner-up, is No. 4 in 5A’s preseason poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
