  • 2A girls soccer semifinals: Dawson and Front Range Christian game suspended by weather

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — The second Class 2A girls soccer semifinal game between Dawson School and Front Range Christian was suspended before play could be completed on Wednesday.

The two teams were scoreless in the second half when play was stopped due to lightning in the area. They waited 45 minutes, but the storm hovered in the area of All-City Stadium, where the game was being played.

As the night wore on, and teams tried to wait out the delay, both schools agreed postpone the game to Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Denver Christian.

Play will resume with 31:52 remaining in the second half. Dawson has the ball on the opposing 15-yard-line, as marked on the football field. There will be no entrance fee.

In the first 2A semifinal, Denver Christian beat Fountain Valley 6-1.

The two teams will resume play on Saturday at 1:30 at Denver Christian with the score at 0-0 and 31:52 remaining.

  • 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A state baseball brackets released

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The state baseball brackets for Class 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A were released on Monday.

5A host sites are All-City Stadium and Metro State. 4A first-round games will be at All-Star Park and Machebeuf, and 3A is at Butch Butler and Niwot high school. 2A’s regional and state bracket will be played at Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.

In the 5A, 4A and 3A tournaments, the first game at each site will be played at 10 a.m., with the second played directly after. The winners of the first-round games will play at 3:00 p.m. at their original site.

There are no seeds in the 3A-5A tournaments, and first-round matchups are predetermined based upon the region each team won last weekend.

After breezing through the regional round with two run-rule wins, Legend will play Broomfield in 5A’s first round at Metro State.

It’s Mountain Vista vs. Dakota Ridge in the second game of the day at Metro State. Dakota Ridge upset Mountain Range and Highlands Ranch in the regional rounds, and will be looking to shake things up further in the state tournament.

Cherry Creek and Legacy will face off at All-City Stadium.

Rocky Mountain and Rock Canyon play in the second game.

In 4A, Thompson Valley plays Golden in game one at All-Star Park. Evergreen and Air Academy follow in game two.

Both Golden and Evergreen were No. 4 seeds in the regional brackets. Thompson Valley upset undefeated Denver North to win Region 1.

Thomas Jefferson and Silver Creek kick things off at Machebeuf. Valor Christian and Pueblo West follow.

Defending 3A champion Faith Christian will play Valley in game two at Niwot HS.

Eaton and Salida play in game one.

Colorado Academy run-ruled its way into the state tournament. The Mustangs will play Lamar in the first game of the day at Butch Butler.

La Junta and Peak to Peak will play after Colorado Academy and Lamar.

Paonia grabbed the No. 1 seed in 2A. The Eagles will play Sargent in the first round.

The winner of the above game will play the winner of N0. 8 Hotchkiss and No. 9 Dayspring Christian Academy.

Peyton is the second seed and gets No. 15 Limon. Should Peyton win, they’ll get the winner of No. 7 Haxtun vs. No. 10 Lyons.

Sedgwick County and Front Range Christian are head to head in the first round after the Cougars landed in the No. 3 seed. No. 6 Holyoke and No. 11 Rocky Ford play to determine who gets the winner.

No. 4 County Line plays No. 13 Evangelical Christian, while No. 5 Burlington gets No. 12 Yuma.

  • 2017 girls soccer state brackets released in all classes

    Cherry Creek heads 5A field

    (Matt Daniels/mattdanphoto.com)

The 2017 spring state championships are officially underway with the release of the girls soccer playoff brackets on Sunday.

Cherry Creek (5A), Valor Christian (4A), Jefferson Academy (3A) and Denver Christian (2A) earned the top seeds in their respective fields, which were determined by the final RPI standings.

Postseason play will officially kick off on Tuesday with first round games in Class 5A and 2A. First round games for 4A will be played on Wednesday with 3A games coming on Friday.

Defending 5A champion Grandview comes in at No. 2 this year, sitting only behind Cherry Creek, which earned the top spot by going 14-0-1 in the regular season. Mountain Vista (No. 3) and Ralston Valley (No. 4) round out the top four spots in that bracket.

Grandview and Mountain Vista are the two highest seeded teams from last years Final 4. Broomfield comes in at No. 8 and Columbine lands at No. 9 this season, meaning they could meet in the second round.

ThunderRidge is the No. 5 seed this season, and Regis Jesuit is No. 7.

Valor Christian earns No. 1 in 4A

Some familiar faces sit at the top of the 4A bracket as the 2016 4A runner-up, Valor Christian, takes the No. 1 spot.

Defending champion Lewis-Palmer sits at No. 3.

Wheat Ridge grabs another high seed, taking the No. 2 spot. As the No. 2 seed last year, the Farmers lost to Valor Christian in the quarterfinals.

D’Evelyn rounds out the top four in the bracket.

Windsor and Mullen, Final 4 teams a year ago, also come in with favorable seeds, taking the No. 6 and No. 8 spots respectively.

The Classical Academy rounds out the top five seeds, while Evergreen is No. 7.

    Jefferson Academy top-seeded in 3A

Jefferson Academy takes the No. 1 seed in 3A, coming off a 13-1-1 season. Perhaps no team in the 3A bracket has a more impressive resume as the Jaguars have beaten Manitou Springs, Kent Denver and the The Academy — all top-10 seeded teams.

The loss to Jefferson Academy is the only loss of the year for Manitou Springs, which grabs the No. 3 spot, the best seed for the Mustangs since they were the No. 4 seed in 2010.

Defending champion Kent Denver takes the No. 7 spot. Colorado Academy and The Academy — semifinalists from last year — take the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, respectively.

Liberty Common is the No. 4 seed, while Peak to Peak is fifth.

With a 24-team field in 3A, the top eight seeds earn first round byes, which means No. 8 Colorado Springs Christian also will begin its journey in Round 2.

2A’s field led by No. 1 Denver Christian

    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Denver Christian grabbed the top seed in the 2A bracket. The Thunder sit just ahead of defending champion Dawson, the No. 2 seed.

Denver Christian beat Dawson 5-0 back on Apr. 20.

Front Range Christian takes the No. 3 spot while Evangelical Christian comes in at No. 4, giving last year’s semifinalists an opportunity to get back.

    Fountain Valley is seeded fifth.

The top four seeds in the 2A field earn a first-round bye.

  • Baseball rankings: Silver Creek moves up to No. 2 in 4A

Silver Creek is making the right moves at the right time. The Raptors have climbed to the No. 2 spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

They sit right behind Valor Christian, who holds on to the No. 1 spot.

Green Mountain also shot up the rankings, gaining three spots to take over the No. 3 position.

    (Courtesy of Palisade HS)

Air Academy (No. 7) and Palisade (No. 9) are the two new teams to crack the 4A poll this week.

Three new teams made their way in the 5A rankings as Legend (No. 6), Legacy (No. 8) and Brighton (No. 10) have all impressed voters enough with the postseason right around the corner.

Cherry Creek remains the No. 1 team in 5A, but Mountain Vista jumped up to the No. 2 spot. Mountain Range is two spots better than a week ago, sitting at No. 4.

Lamar holds on to the No. 1 spot in 3A with Lutheran climbing up to No. 2.

Valley made a three-spot jump to come in at No. 4.

At No. 9 and No. 10 respectively, Delta and Resurrection Christian are the two newcomers to the 3A poll.

Paonia maintained its spot atop the 2A poll while Sedgwick County jumped a spot to get to No. 3.

At No. 8, Hotchkiss is two spots better than last week.

Front Range Christian joins the 2A poll at No. 10.

Holly remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 1A. Eads was able to jump a spot to No. 2, trading places with No. 3 Fleming.

Kiowa jumped two spots to No. 8 while Granada (No. 9) and Manzanola (No. 10) join the rankings this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

During the regular season, new polls are released each Monday.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

The defending Class 4A girls soccer champs are gaining ground.

Lewis-Palmer jumped a spot to come in at No. 2 in the 4A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings. They sit only behind No. 1 Valor Christian, the team the Rangers beat in the title game last year.

They weren’t the only one making their way up the poll, however. Windsor jumped two spots to land at No. 5 and Evergreen better their position by three spots, coming in at No. 7.

Rounding out the final set of girls rankings is Durango, the only newcomer in 4A.

Cherry Creek kept its grasp on the No. 1 spot in the 5A poll, but this week it’s Mountain Vista sitting at No. 2.

Columbine jumped a couple of spots to land at No. 5, but it was Rocky Mountain with the big leap, gaining four spots to take the No. 6 position.

Legacy was the lone newcomer to the 5A poll, coming in at No. 7.

Jefferson Academy remains the top team in 3A, taking seven of nine first-place votes. The other two went to No. 2 Colorado Academy.

Overall, the top seven teams in the 3A rankings held their spots from last week.

There were no new teams in the 3A poll.

No one in 2A could unseat Denver Christian who held on to the No. 1 spot in the poll.

Front Range Christian jumped two spots to land at No. 3.

At No. 5, Telluride is the only new team in the 2A rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

New polls are released each Monday during the regular season.
