MONTROSE — Defending Class 4A champion Mullen girls basketball is headed back to the Great 8.

The Mustangs, seeded No. 9, went on the road and beat No. 8 Montrose in a game they controlled from start to finish in a 65-40 win.

“I thought that our defense intensity was terrific,” Mullen coach Frank Cawley said. “We were able to pressure the ball all night and led to some key turnovers and some nice transition baskets.”

Junior Megan Pohs led Mullen with 24 points.

“Megan was special tonight,” Cawley said.

Cawley also pointed to Imani Perez and Alexa Dominguez (13 points) as key contributors.

“Imani’s work on the boards was a difference maker and Alexa Dominquez just does it all well,” Cawley said. “Lex is a coaches dream. She can play every position and brings great intensity every time she is in the game.”

Mullen built at 14-6 lead after the first quarter, and was up 31-13 at halftime. It was 46-23 after three quarters.

“Montrose is a great program and (coach) Steve (Skiff) does a great job,” Cawley said. “That is a very good team we played tonight and I am really proud of my team. All 12 contributed and we are excited to move on.”

Gracie Gallegos also had ten points for Mullen.

Montrose was led by Hadley Greiner, who had 14 points. Caraline Burwell had seven, and Jacie Casebolt had six.

“I could not be more happy with the effort and heart we showed against a really good Mullen team tonight,” Montrose coach Steve Skiff said. “Mullen is a very talented team and give them credit for coming in and executing their game plan. We had a great season and am proud of everything we accomplished.”

Mullen will host No. 16 Canon City, which upset No. 1 Sand Creek in the Sweet 16.

  • Montrose boys basketball beats Evergreen in overtime in 4A’s Round 2

    Montrose Evergreen boys basketball
    (Vanessa Vandehey/vanessa-photography.net)

Montrose boys basketball is headed to the Class 4A Sweet 16 following an overtime win over Evergreen on Saturday.

    Montrose won, 48-46.

“What a great high school basketball game,” Montrose coach Ryan Voehringer said. “I have nothing but respect for Coach Dolan and his team. I though we played extremely well on the defensive end as a unit. We drew five offensive fouls. Are help defense was great and did a great job on their ball-screen action.”

Luke Hutto led Montrose with 25 points and eight rebounds.

“Luke Hutto was a man on both ends,” Voehringer said. “I also thought we had great minutes from two bench players, Ashden Oberg and Fletcher Cheezum. Ashden made two huge plays in overtime. I’ve been telling those two to be ready when their number was called. Ashden stepped up huge. Proud fo him. Great team win. Survive and advance.”

The game was back-and-forth from start to finish. Evergreen led 12-11 after the first and Montrose was ahead 24-22 at halftime. They held that two-point advance by leading 32-30 after three. Montrose led by four with 50 seconds left in regulation, but Evergreen battled back to tie it at 40-40 after four quarters.

Tied at 46 in overtime with 5.4 seconds left, Jordan Jennings found Oberg for the game-winning bucket.

“The win was a grind-out game,” Montrose senior Trey Schwerdtfeger said. “There was no break. Every play counted. Having Luke out during OT was hard, but when it comes down to it, good teams can score all five players and when your number is called you better be ready and our guys were. That’s what it came down to.”

Added Trey Reese, a sophomore: “What led to our win was our defense. Every ball screen we switch, which worked and not getting in a hurry when they pressured us bringing the ball up helped.”

Griffin Lauritano had 18 points to lead Evergreen, and Cam Morlan had 10.

“Montrose played a very good game,” Evergreen coach Jeff Dolan said. “Hutto has an extremely bright future. He made some big plays. Montrose is very disciplined and well coached. Our players did everything we could down the stretch to keep us in the game. Both teams were back and forth and both teams never quit. I can’t be more proud of this team and the fight they have.”

Montrose got 19 points from Kennadie Minerich, and 17 from Allie Nichols.

Montrose led 19-7 after the first quarter, and 32-19 at half.

“I thought we came out with great energy and got off to a great start and played solid the rest of the game,” Skiff said. “I thought we had some great plays down the stretch and made some big free throws at the end.”

Those free throws helped Montrose secure the game. Mesa Ridge cut the Montrose lead to 41-37 with 2:28 to play. Minerich also hit a 3-pointer which helped spread that lead to 44-37.

“We executed the plan really well and did what we set out to do,” Minerich said. “We had great inside-outside game and had big defensive plays throughout the game.”

Said Hadley Greiner: “It was a great team effort and I thought they all contributed in the win.”

MONTROSE — Fruita Monument girls basketball captured the Southwestern League championship with a win over Montrose on Tuesday.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, entered the game at 6-1 in league play, while 4A No. 10 Montrose was 5-1. Following a 55-32 win, Fruita has clinched the league title.

“Happy for the girls,” Fruita coach Michael Wells said. “It’s a culmination of lots of hard work and to end with a Southwest title makes the much sweeter.”

Fruita Monument started fast on Tuesday, opening with a 9-0 run which led to an 18-9 advantage after the first quarter. The Wildcats extended their lead to 38-22 at halftime.

They continued to lead as it was 43-27 after three quarters.

With the win, Fruita Monument finishes the regular season at 21-2 overall.

“Give a lot of credit to Fruita tonight,” Montrose coach Steve Skiff said. “They were able to come in and execute their gameplan and come away with a victory. We will learn from this and we will and we will go back to work tomorrow and prepare for our final league game Friday.”

    (Vanessa Vandehey/vanessa-photography.net)

MONTROSE — In a key league matchup, Montrose boys basketball beat Fruita Monument 53-48 on Tuesday.

With the win, Montrose moves to 6-1 in league play with one game remaining. Fruita Monument has finished its regular season slate, and is now 7-1 in league. If Montrose wins its final game on Friday, it will give them a share of the Southwestern League title with the Wildcats.

Tuesday’s contest was a back-and-forth affair from the start. Montrose led 15-14 after the first quarter, and then built a 27-19 lead midway through the second. But Fruita closed the frame on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 27 at halftime.

Neither team was able to pull away in a hotly-contested third quarter, and the game was tied 40-40 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Montrose was finally able to take control. They led 47-43 with three minutes left in the game. Fruita had to foul and Montrose went on to win, 53-48.

“What a great high school basketball game,” Coach Ryan Voehringer said. “I have nothing but respect for Coach Hayden and his program. I thought my guys battled for 32 minutes on both ends. I thought are switching defenses caused problem for them and slowed them down offensively a bit.

“Free throws were huge in the fourth quarter. We went 9-12, including 6-6 from Luke Hutto. A great win.”

Luke Hutto had 17 points and six rebounds. Sean Alex had 10 and seven, and Jordan Jennings chipped in with nine points and four assists.

“Last time we played these guys, we came out flat,” Sean Alex said of the first meeting, a 68-49 Fruita win on Feb. 8. “In this game we just kept fighting, which I think shocked them. The crowd played a huge role. I’ve never been to a game that was that loud in my life.”

“Great team win,” Jordan Jennings said. “Those games are the reason why we play. We have to keep the energy up and keep playing like that every night.”

Marcus Labonde led Fruita with 21 points.

“I thought Montrose did a great job of making us stretch the floor and taking away the rim,” Fruita Monument coach Ryan Hayden said. “Our guys hit some tough shots. This was a great game to compete in this time of the year and the type of game that gets us ready for the playoffs.”
