AURORA — Cherry Creek baseball, seeded No. 18, advanced to the Class 5A state tournament by winning District 5 on Saturday.

The Bruins beat No. 15 Grand Junction 11-0, and No. 2 Regis Jesuit 11-0.

  • District baseball brackets released for first time under RPI system

Back in January, the Legislative Council approved the recommendation of the CHSAA baseball committee to fast track the use of RPI as the system to determine the playoff fields.

Wednesday saw the results of that vote for the first time as district brackets for Class 3A through 5A were released. Unlike the Wild Card system used previously, the RPI format takes into account the overall strength of schedule for each team and combines it with their win/loss record to create the field of 32 teams.

Pine Creek came away with the top overall seed in 5A, and will host this weekend. Other host schools are Regis Jesuit, Lakewood, Heritage, Rock Canyon, Grandview, ThunderRidge and Mullen.

Rock Canyon, which won last year’s 5A championship, is the No. 5 overall seed and will play Bear Creek in their first game. If they advance they’ll see the winner of Dakota Ridge and Chaparral.

Three of the final four teams left in last year’s playoff field made it back to the tournament with Grandview landing at No. 6, Chatfield at No. 26. District play will begin this weekend with the state tournament starting next week.

Mountain View leads the way in 4A, taking the top overall spot in the class. They’ll host their district where they will play Roosevelt. The winner of that game will meet the winner of Palisade and The Classical Academy.

The other host schools in 4A are Canon City, Valor Christian, Windsor, Pueblo West, Fort Morgan, Denver North and Delta.

Two-time defending state champion Green Mountain did not make it inside the top 32 teams and did not qualify for district play.

Last year’s runner-up, Lewis-Palmer, drew the No. 26 seed and will head to District 6 and play host Fort Morgan. The potential of a showdown with league rival Palmer Ridge is there as the Bears play Longmont in that same district. Lewis-Palmer swept the season series against the Bears this year.

Of last years final four teams in the tournament, only Lewis-Palmer and Ponderosa (No. 29) qualified for districts this year.

Defending 3A champion Eaton held strong as the No. 1 team in that class all season and is the No. 1 seed coming into districts. The Reds will face Olathe in their first district game with the winner of that game playing the winner of No. 16 Lutheran and No. 17 The Academy.

University, St, Mary’s, Lamar, Faith Christian, La Junta, Valley and Kent Denver are the other host teams in 3A.

All four of last year’s final four teams in the tournament qualified for districts this year. Eaton and University are the top two teams in the brackets, Brush comes in at No. 9 and will play No. 24 Buena Vista in District 2 at Kent Denver and Sterling lands at No. 21 and will play No. 12 Colorado Academy in District 4 at Faith Christian.

  • Regis Jesuit, Dawson lead the way in boys state lacrosse brackets

The teams that were seen as the top dogs at the end of the boys lacrosse regular season will hold on to their distinctions in the 2016 state tournament.

Regis Jesuit earned the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 5A boys lacrosse bracket that was released Monday morning. Dawson assumes the top spot in the 4A bracket.

Defending 5A champion Cherry Creek lands at No. 4 with Mountain Vista and Arapahoe taking the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

The Bruins, Raiders and Golden Eagles all advanced to last year’s Final 4. Kent Denver, the other Final 4 team from 2015, lands at No. 14 this year.

This year’s bracket sees three fresh faces as Palmer (No. 10), Chaparral (No. 13) and Legend (No. 16) all made it into this year’s tournament after failing to qualify last year.

First round games for the 2016 5A state lacrosse tournament will be played on Wednesday.

After starting this season 0-3 Valor Christian won 11 of their final 12 games to play up to the No. 2 seed. Following the Eagles are Conifer at No. 3, Windsor and No. 4 and Cheyenne Mountain at No. 5.

Defending champion Aspen lands at No. 11 and will face No. 6 Air Academy for its first round game.

Dawson School, Valor Christian and Cheyenne Mountain all joined Aspen in last year’s semifinals and with the layout of the bracket, it’s possible for all those teams to return to that point.

Like in 5A, there are three teams in this year’s bracket that did not qualify in 2015. Golden lands at No. 7, St. Mary’s is No. 8 and Vail Mountain is the No. 14 team.

First round games for the 4A tournament will be played on Tuesday.

  • Valor Christian boys lacrosse gets second half rally to beat Palmer

COLORADO SPRINGS — Valor Christian may have found one of the best ways to carry momentum into the Class 4A state lacrosse tournament.

Down by three goals, halfway through the third quarter, the Eagles exploded on offense, scoring the final four goals of the game to beat Palmer 6-5. The win came against a team from a higher class and on senior night.

“A couple of guys on the field were keeping level heads and telling us to keep calm,” sophomore midfielder Sean Traynor said. “We knew we were still in because we knew we could come into this game and take on a 5A team.”

But it was the way in which they took on this 5A team that really stood out.

The 5A CHSAANow.com No. 5-ranked Terrors (12-3 overall) were coming off a rough loss to Mountain Vista and were honoring their seniors for their final home game. Combined with the fact that the Eagles (11-4) were without their starting goaltender Logan Lee and it would be an easy assumption to make that it would be Palmer’s night.

But freshman goalie Aiden Columbia was up to the challenge. He surrendered two quick goals to start the second half, giving Palmer a 5-2 lead, but would shut the Terrors out the rest of the way.

“Our freshman came in and stood on his head,” Eagles coach John Grant said. “I couldn’t be prouder of that young man.”

The Terrors jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead thanks to Ike Mahan cleaning up a loose ball in front of the Valor net. Traynor tied it up 31 seconds later before Palmer would go on a 4-1 run, taking a 5-2 lead.

And with that kind of lead and a goalie like Caleb Espinoza in net, a comeback was going to be difficult. But the Eagles kept their heads in the game and their freshman goalie was more than ready for the challenge ahead of him.

“I was so amped up for today,” Columbia said. “Everybody was a supporting and I was so ready to do this for my teammates and not for myself.”

He kept his teammates in it and then watched as they began to chip away at the Terrors’ lead. Dalton Ziegler, Grayson Goodyear and Lance Tillman each put one in net to get the game squared away with just over ten minutes remaining in the game.

A minute later, Traynor took another shot at the net and while Espinoza was able to tip it, the ball still found the net to give Valor the 6-5.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Traynor said. “Both my goals were assisted and without the team we couldn’t get any of the goals that we got.”

Both teams now await the release of the state brackets, which will happen on Monday.

It was a tough final two games for the Terrors, but coach Sequoia Bowan knows that playing tough teams down the stretch is only going to make his players battle-tested for next week.

“Each game we play, we hope to learn from it and grow and get better for the next one,” Bowan said. “We have a lot of things to work on. We have the weekend to work on them and then we’ll see how the seeding works.”

  • No. 2 Mountain Vista boys lacrosse sends a message with blowout win over No. 5 Palmer

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

HIGHLANDS RANCH — After suffering its first loss of the season, the Mountain Vista boys lacrosse had been sent a message: They needed to play better.

    Message received.

The Golden Eagles came out aggressive on Wednesday and sent a message of their own with a 15-7 win over Palmer to clinch the Douglas County League championship.

“Our league is stronger than most as far as how many playoff teams it will get,” Golden Eagles coach Jamie Munro said. “But it doesn’t have the elite teams that will just kick the (snot) out of you like a Regis, (Cherry) Creek or Arapahoe. We needed to get beat down, so it was good.”

The Golden Eagles (13-1 overall, 10-0 Class 5A Douglas County) came into the game ranked No. 2 in the final CHSAANow.com boys lacrosse rankings with only Regis Jesuit standing above them. And unlike in the game against the Raiders, Mountain Vista came out aggressive and put four quick goals on the Terrors (12-2, 8-2).

Sophomore attacker Jake Govett accounted for two of those four quick scores and was one of two Golden Eagles players to finish the day with a hat trick. Jake Harvey also scored three times, including a laser at the halftime buzzer to give Mountain Vista a 12-1 lead.

“We knew (Palmer) was a tough team and just came out strong,” Govett said. “We’re getting into the playoffs soon so we just had to get the fire rolling going in.”

If anything, the win may serve as an eye-opener to teams across the state. The Terrors had climbed up to No. 5 in the state and boast one of the premiere goaltenders in all of lacrosse in Caleb Espinoza.

But a series of quick strikes put Palmer on its heels and they faced a deficit that soon was too much to overcome.

“I don’t know what it was,” Palmer coach Sequoia Bowan said. “We picked the wrong day to not play our game, that’s for sure. We need to have a short memory, hit the reset button and get ready to go.”

A team that will win games based on the strength of its defense, the Terrors went scoreless for the first 18:24 of the first half and had already surrendered nine goals. It was Noah Smith who finally got them on the board.

But even with an eight-goal lead and momentum on their side, the Golden Eagles didn’t feel like they had the game well in hand.

“It’s easier to protect a lead then to play from behind,” Mountain Vista goalie Paxton Boyer said. “At the end of the day, no matter how many goals we’re up by, I still have a job to do and the defense still has a job to do.”

The Golden Eagles have one more crucial non-league game remaining. They host Arapahoe on Friday night at Shea Stadium. The Warriors are right in the mix of the top four teams and with the added pressure of the seniors playing their final game, it will make for a rough night.

“It’s going to be an emotional one with senior night,” Boyer said. “But we’re going to get back to work tomorrow and be ready.”

Palmer will also honor its seniors Friday as they host Valor Christian at Garry Berry Stadium.

  • Photos: Dakota Ridge girls lacrosse wins sixth-straight game

LITTLETON — Dakota Ridge girls lacrosse won its sixth game in a row on Tuesday, defeating Palmer 20-4.

The Eagles, now 11-2 this season, got eight goals and two assists from Kailee Lammers, and four goals and an assist from Hannah Krats.

A 14-8 win over Cherry Creek earned Mountain Vista the right to be named the No. 1 team in the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys lacrosse rankings this week.

The Golden Eagles were able to ride that momentum to wins over Lewis-Palmer and Chaparral, solidifying their spot as the new top team in the class.

The Bruins fell one spot to No. 2.

After falling out of the rankings last week, Rock Canyon is back in the mix, coming in at No. 10. They are the only newcomer to this week’s 5A poll.

The Dawson School still looks like the favorite in 4A and the Mustangs held on to their spot at the top of the rankings.

Confier was able to get a 14-13 win over Windsor to jump up to No. 3 this week. As a result, Cheyenne Mountain is the new No. 2 team in the poll.

A big win over Pueblo West helped Air Academy jump to No. 5 ahead of a big showdown with Cheyenne Mountain this week.

St. Mary’s is the only new team in the rankings as they come in at No. 10.

Colorado Academy and Chaparral are starting to get noticed at the right time.

The Mustangs and the Wolverines each won two crucial games last week and those wins were good enough to get them into the Class 5A CHSAANow.com boys lacrosse rankings.

Colorado Academy breaks in at No. 9 and Chaparral lands at No. 10.

An overtime win over Regis Jesuit ensured that Cherry Creek would remain the top team in the rankings. The Raiders stayed put at No. 3, with the loss not affecting their position.

In fact, the top five teams last week all held on to their spots this week.

The Dawson School is still the No. 1 team in 4A, taking eight of nine first-place votes.

Thanks to a comeback win over Golden, Windsor held on to their spot at No. 2.

Air Academy and Valor Christian each jumped two spots from a week ago with the Kadets coming in at No. 7 and the Eagles landing at No. 8.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
