Welcome back, hoop fans to what we call the best time of year. Nothing like March #MileHighMadness energy!

As always, there were criticisms of the RPI system that sets our seeding for the tourneys but Ball Fever Crew believes the “cream will rise” and it certainly did in the 5A and 4A brackets!

Let’s take a look at how things played out and preview our Final 4!

    5A/4A Great 8 Recap

Our CHSAA staff compiled a pretty cool list of social media and direct reports from the 5A/4A coverage. Check it out here.

A compilation of our best photographers were also on hand at the Coliseum to capture the exciting moments.

    Chaparral vs. ThunderRidge

    Overland ThunderRidge boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

It’s been said many times that it’s hard to beat the same team three times in a season. And that’s exactly what Chaparral is hoping to do when it faces ThunderRidge on a neutral court this time.

Chaparral beat a very game Cherry Creek squad 67-62 in the Great 8 to reach this point. Big man Bryce Matthews did a lot of damage inside scoring 20 points while on the perimeter Kobe Sanders and Tanner Giles combined for 23. Tyzelle Lewis took on the challenge of guarding “super soph” Julian Hammond and disturbed him first half until Hammond started to find some rhythm second half finishing with 21 and his running mate Myles Purchase scored 18 in the loss.

16-0 start? I don’t think anyone in the Coliseum expected the start ThunderRidge had in absolutely shocking Overland with that start to the first stage. The quarter ended up 20-5 and this game was never really in question as the Grizz shot 48 percent from the field, a hot 6-8 from 3-point land, and 85 percent from free throw line en route to 73-49 convincing win.

Senior Bailey Verk led four Grizzlies in double figure scoring with 18 and scored in a variety of ways. Young soph Garrett Arnold was dishing the rock to the double digit scorers as he piled up 6 assists with only 1 turnover. Big Graham Ike was the bright spot for Overland on a down day with 15 points and nine rebounds.

As previously mentioned, Chap and ThunderRidge have played each other twice this season and the Wolverines are 2-0, winning both of the previous match ups by double digits. The Grizzlies’ leading scorer Austin Holt at 12 points per game will need to lead the way and have at least two others to join him in double figure scoring in this one.

Kobe Sanders will look to stay out of early foul trouble so he can find his rhythm early for Chap to have success.

It will be a battle inside with the Grizzlies overall size vs. Chap’s horses who will look to push the pace.

Tizell Lewis will be licking his chops to again be a defensive “secret weapon” for Chap and he will need to be allowed to play his defensive style for Chap to take down T-Ridge for the third time.

    Mountain Vista vs. Rangeview

    Rangeview Grandview boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Two teams that have been doubted throughout the season:

Mountain Vista didn’t step up in their big games against Chap and Regis.

Rangeview’s league play and lack of competition will hurt them come playoff time.

These are criticisms these two teams are fully aware of and ready to blast the myths!

Speaking of blasting myths, how about Mountain Vista taking that “no one can shoot in the Coliseum” belief and making it look silly this night. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field and needed every bit of it as Kenny Foster scored 30 for Smoky Hill and had Vista faithful just a little nervous as things got tight in the end.

Smoky Hill Mountain Vista boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

But Ben Grusing was the picture of consistency for Vista scoring 20 points and was 10-12 from the free throw line. Vista was 75 percent from the line as a team which was crucial down the stretch.

We knew plenty about Chap, Vista was hot, and ThunderRidge left looking like a totally different squad from the regular season, but many on press row stated they were most impressed with the overall team play and attack of Rangeview.

The Raiders have a laundry list of capable athletes and defending champ Grandview was missing one of theirs in injured junior Caleb McGill. That certainly didn’t help the Wolves, who with McGill is one of the few teams in the state whose roster you could look at and say, “yep, this stacks up nicely.”

The Raiders are aggressive in attacking the rim but also have a young man, Cade Palmer, who can stretch the floor! He only shot twice on the night but where he shot the DEEP 3s from is what forced Grandview to extend their defense and create lanes for Raiders slashers.

Quincy Jewett led the scoring for Rangeview with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in the impressive 10-point win. Never easy to take out the defending champs!

Rangeview and Mountain Vista are both 24-2, proved they belong here, and both average almost 70 points per game. We won’t have to worry about any slowed pace with Coach Wood and Coach Palmer here!

Watch out for Quincy Jewett to have a huge impact as the Eagles have struggled with teams who have height inside. They are many “above-the-rim” Raiders as well (none more high-flying than the Speller twins), who will make the rebounding, second-chance point game interesting.

The “big 3” of Grusing, May, and Pulling will be called on heavily for the Eagles, who will likely throw multiple defensive looks at Rangeview, daring them to hit from the perimeter (not Cade Palmer though…stay glued to him!) in an attempt to keep those studs out of the paint.

Is there such thing as a fast paced chess match? Can’t wait!

    Lewis Palmer vs. Holy Family

    Lewis-Palmer Cheyenne Mountain boys basketball
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Holy Family has only lost four games on the season but one of those losses was to the No. 1 overall seed by 17 points back in December. Holy Family obviously has played strong ball since that Dec. 1 loss.

Arguably there’s no better team or “hot” squad than 26-0 Lewis Palmer, who isn’t only undefeated but also have a home win over the 5A No. 1 seed on their resume, as well.

Lewis-Palmer won their Great 8 game by more than 30 over Centaurus while Holy Family won by 11 in a revenge game over Mead, who was rolling before their loss to HF.

Joel Scott and the Rangers are no strangers to the Coliseum where he’ll bring his 19-point-per-game average.

The mid-range attack of Tanner Baird’s 16 points per game is what leads the Tigers. Holy Family hangs its hat on defense but allowed 60 to LP in their December match.

Tre McCullough and Noah Baca both scored 12 as Scott led with 21 in the first tilt. Matt Ragsdale did not play the first time around, and that makes the Tigers’ defensive task even greater!

    Longmont vs. Pueblo East

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Lewis Palmer isn’t the sole 26-0 squad! Don’t forget unbeaten defending champ Longmont, who unlike the Rangers who haven’t blown out all contenders. The Trojans have played recent overtime games, including their tight 1-point win over game Harrison on their home court in Great 8 play.

Pueblo East comes in on a four-game winning streak and taking down No. 3 seed Steamboat and Cheyenne Mountain’s scoring machine Javonte Johsnon in Great 8.

Pueblo East has won their last two elimination games by a total of 6 points. Battle tested, as well!

Longmont averages 70 points per game and that is fueled by Brady Renck’s nearly 8 assists per game! Beck Page is the recipient of many of those assists averaging 14 points per match for the Trojans.

Pueblo East is powered by Kain Medrano’s 12 points per game and Joe Padula’s 8 rebounds each night out.

Pueblo East will bring their blue collar, defensive mentality to the Coliseum to see if they can dethrone the champs!

    Final 4 Thoughts

Talking on press row we always discuss the “sexy” match up for the fans and media. Looking at it that way the Fever Crew would be ALL HYPED for a Chaparral/Rangeview final…but we also realize there is “Highlands Ranch” prideful community who would love nothing better than a ThunderRidge/Mountain Vista all “H-Ranch” final! We shall see.

In 4A you couldn’t write a better script than 27-0 vs. 27-0 Longmont/LP rematch from last year. Many feel this has been destined since one year ago and these two top seeds have certainly played that way. But something tells up Pueblo East and Holy Family are just fine with the “unbeatens” getting all the attention which they hope can lead to a sneak attack!

Friday is jam-packed with intrigue, folks. Get out and enjoy!

  • 4A wrestling: Pueblo East wins first title in program history

    Pueblo East wrestling
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — Pueblo East won its first wrestling title in school history at the Class 4A state wrestling championships. After losing the team race last year, this one was about redemption.

“We were in the same situation as last year: it was on me, Zion (Freeman) and Andy (Garcia),” Pueblo East’s Dominic Robles said after his match. “[Last year] two of us had to win, and me and Zion lost. I told them before our matches, before we won the team title, I told them, ‘We have to get redemption from last year.’”

After the Eagles ripped off three straight first place finishes off of two pins, they could breathe out.

“We have the best heavyweight room in the state,” Andy Garcia said. “Obviously, three back-to-back-to-back. Everyday it’s like that, it’s a battle, it’s a grind with all three of us.”

First, with the 195-pound match locked at two and under 30 seconds remaining in the last round, Zion Freeman pinned Cheyenne Mountain’s Nico Gagliardi.

Then came Robles. Robles narrowly lost last year in a 3-2 decision, but this year, he pinned Canon City’s Gage Pruitt in the 220-pound bout in 1:36.

“Right before my match, we clinched the team title, so that was going through my head,” Robles said. “I finally got the individual [title]. I came close last year, losing 3-2. I finally was able to accomplish my goal. Getting a pin in the first period of the state finals, that’s huge.”

Garcia capped the redemption run off in his heavyweight bout to claim his third straight title — a 4-3 decision over Broomfield’s Tyler Carpenter.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

“I felt like I was going to dominate,” Garcia said. “We went out there, and in our first interaction [Carpenter] did a weird foot trip that caught my heel. I felt my knee give out, and that’s when I knew it was gonna be a long match.”

To Windsor and Pueblo County, first place finishes have been commonplace in recent years as five of the last eight 4A titles have come from the two schools.

This year, Pueblo County (181.5 team points) and Windsor (170) were in the thick of it, and rounded out the top three behind Pueblo East (200). Pueblo County made a push on the final day as three wrestlers took first place finishes.

“I always focus on myself and what I can do in my match, so I wasn’t really too worried about the team score,” Pueblo County’s Jax Garoutte said as the gap in the team race thinned. “It’s a great feeling to finally get it done and my teammates are getting it done, too. We’re all working hard, everything is paying off for us.”

With Windsor gunning for a repeat team championship and Pueblo County looking for its third title in four years, Pueblo East took the team title.

    Three wrestlers three-peat

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Three wrestlers will be looking to become four-time champions next year. Dominick Serrano (Windsor), Isaiah Salazar (Windsor) and the previously mentioned Garcia (Pueblo East) all took first and held three fingers in the air in celebration.

Windsor’s Dominick Serrano continued his quest to become a four-time champion with a major decision over Canon City’s James Ruona in the 132-pound division.

“It would mean the world,” Serrano said on capturing the fourth title next year. “I’m just going to focus on winning another title. I just won one today — next year, it’s a new year and mindset. I’m after one state title, one state title next year.”

Serrano was fired up to get on the mat and keep Windsor climbing in the team scores.

“I was ready to get in there after seeing my two teammates win it,” Serrano said. “I was pumped it was my turn. I was ready to go.”

Windsor’s Isaiah Salazar joined his teammate Serrano as a three-time champion after a 10-0 major decision against Pueblo County’s Jayson Davis in the 182-pound division.

“We weren’t in the team race by any means, but just winning it for myself even as an individual— helping my brothers out — it was nice,” Salazar said.

The Wizards could have two four-time champions this time next year.

“Me and Dom next year, we have to take it one match at a time,” Salazar said. “We can’t look to get four right away. We have to grind the season out and see what happens at state.”

    106-pound division

Windsor’s Brady Parker defeated Pueblo Central’s Dominick Castro with a 10-2 major decision in his first year wrestling at the state championships.

    113-pound division

Pueblo County’s Brendon Garcia capped off his high school campaign as a four-time champion. He was the first of three four-time champions this year. Garcia came away with a 7-3 decision over Pueblo East’s Xavier Espinoza.

    120-pound division

Will Vombaur gave Windsor its second individual champion with his pin of Mountain View’s Malachi Contreras.

    126-pound division

Patrick Allis of Discovery Canyon placed first for the second year in a row with an 11-5 decision vs. Ryan Roth of Pueblo East. Allis was the 120-pound division champion in 2018.

    138-pound division

Broomfield’s Darren Green grinded out a 3-2 decision vs. Pueblo East’s Aaden Valdez. Green, a junior, placed third in 2018.

    145-pound division

After losing in a tiebreaker of last year’s championship, Pueblo County’s Jax Garoutte made his way back to the title bout. The result: A 10-2 major decision over Pueblo Central’s Cole Hernandez.

“I had a heartbreaker in the finals last year,” Garoutte said. “I’ve worked my butt off this season, so it’s just a reward for all my hard work. I wouldn’t sacrifice it for anything, I wouldn’t work any less hard. Man, it’s just a great feeling.”

Garoutte waited 371 days for a second chance.

“It weighed on me like, ‘Man I have this deep, dark place I don’t ever wanna go again,’” Garoutte continued. “That motivated me to keep wrestling in that match and put some points up.”

    152-pound division

Greeley Central’s Andrew Alirez etched his name into the list of four-time champions with a pin vs. Pueblo County’s Trevor Singleton. Alirez, a perfect 36-0 this season, secured the pin in just over three minutes.

    160-pound division

Christopher Fasano kept the wins flowing for Pueblo County with a 2-0 decision in his match against Coronado’s KJ Kearns. Fasano ended 2018 with a second place finish, losing to Mesa Ridge’s Elijah Valdez.

    170-pound division

Longmont’s Drake Engelking held off Windsor’s Cody Eaton in a hard-fought 3-2 decision.

  • Colorado’s elite wrestlers battle at Arvada West Invitational

ARVADA — The evidence was overwhelming how competitive and challenging the two-day Arvada West Wrestling Invitational was as it wrapped up late Saturday afternoon.

The annual tournament featured the On The Mat’s top 3 ranked teams in Class 5A and 4A — Pomona, Grand Junction, Grandview, Windsor, Pueblo East and Pueblo County — along with 25 state placers and 11 nationally ranked wrestlers.

“This tournament has got tougher,” Pomona coach Sam Federico said.

The Panthers, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, eventually finished fifth in the team standings. Pomona senior Justin Pacheco was the lone Panther to advance to the championship matches. He lost to Windsor junior Dominick Serrano 7-2.

“Serrano is definitely the guy I wanted to wrestle this year,” Pacheco said. “It didn’t go the way I wanted it to this time, but I’ll see him again at the state duals in a couple of weeks.”

Serrano, a two-time 4A state champion, improved his high school career record to 104-0 with the victory.

A handful of Pomona wrestlers didn’t wrestle during the two-day tournament and the Panthers suffered a couple of more injuries at the meet.

“We are about as beat up as I have ever seen us,” Federico admitted. “The tournaments we go to you get beat up, but I think it makes us better wrestlers and tougher mentally. There are no season-ending injuries. We just need some time to recoup. We have time.”

Windsor junior Isaiah Salazar, left, works on a takedown of Pomona sophomore Franklin Cruz in a 182-pound semifinal Saturday. Salazar remained undefeated on the season winning the 182 title. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Jefferson junior Nick Gallegos made the most of his time in the highly competitive tournament. Gallegos — ranked No. 1 at 152-pounds in Class 3A — took victory by injury default against Pueblo County’s Trevor Singleton — No. 3 in 4A at 152. Singleton appeared to suffer a knee injury midway through the first period and couldn’t continue.

“It feels really good. It took me two years to get here,” Gallegos said of his victory at A-West. “I couldn’t have done this without my coach Dwight Howes. It feels great.”

Howes was a state champion at Arvada High School in his day and has been an assistant coach for Jefferson head coach Oscar Fonseca.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a champion here,” Fonseca said. “That is a pretty great accomplishment. He (Gallegos) never stops working in the wrestling room.”

Gallegos placed third at 138 pounds during his first trip to the state tournament as a freshman in 2017. He was a favorite to win last year, but Gallegos was in a car accident two days before the state tournament. He lost 2-0 in his opening match and had to drop out of the tournament due to injury.

“My focus is winning a state title,” Gallegos said.

Jefferson could be in the mix for the 3A state title. The Saints are currently ranked third. Fonseca had five wrestlers compete at the A-West Invite and four placed in the top 4.

“These tournament are great, but they are just practice,” Fonseca said. “We are looking toward our next match. We don’t look at rankings. We don’t worry about that stuff.”

A nice addition for the Saints this season was the sister/brother tandem of Cayden and Zander Condit. Conifer dropped its wrestling program this year so the Condits are wrestling for Jefferson.

Cayden is looking to join the list of female wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament and Zander placed fifth at 132 pounds in the 3A tournament last year.

“They fit in extremely well with us,” Fonseca said of the Condits. “They have come in and been a part of our family. They have been a great addition for us.”

Arvada West wasn’t able to grab an individual title, but senior Mitchell Romero (106) and freshman Dylan Kruse (113) both advanced to title bouts.

Pueblo East came away with the team title racking up 195.5 points. Rival Pueblo County (188.5) took second and Windsor (185.5) placed third.
