David Moore III rushed for four first-half touchdowns as top-ranked Pine Creek flexed its muscles in a win over No. 3 Pueblo West.
The Eagles led 35-0 at the break, and went on to win 41-13. Pine Creek is now 3-1 this season, with the lone loss coming to 5A No. 3 Valor Christian.
“David had a great game,” Pine Creek coach Todd Miller told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “He just keeps ripping off long runs. And our front is doing a good job of blocking and our receivers are chasing downfield and setting up long runs.”
Officially, Moore rushed for 202 yards on 11 carries, with the four scores.
“David, he’s got great vision, and he’s been doing this for a long time,” Miller added. “He’s one of the best young men I’ve been around, and one of the best football players, too.”
In a tight battle, Dakota Ridge held a potent Ponderosa offense in check to secure a top-10 win.
The Eagles expanded a 7-0 halftime lead to 13-0 in the third quarter. Then when Ponderosa cut it to 13-6, Dakota Ridge put the game away with a 16-yard rushing touchdown from Ben Gulting with three minutes to play.
“It was a great win,” coach Ron Woitalewicz told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids played very well, and beat a very good Ponderosa team.”
“We kinda kept the pressure on them, and we shut down the run game,” the coach added. “It’s always good to get a quality win against a good team. Sometimes it’s good to fly under the radar.”
Centauri built a 24-0 lead after the first quarter, and then went on to secure the 37-0 win over Buena Vista.
The Falcons, who have won at least six games each of the past three seasons, are now 4-1 so far this season.

8-man: (5) Dayspring Christian 24, (4) Caliche 18
In a league matchup, Dayspring Christian rallied from down 6-0 at halftime to improve to 4-0.
“The boys really showed up tonight,” Dayspring coach Ben Fusco told the Scoreboard Show. “It was really fun to go up there and come out with a win.”
Trailing at halftime, Fusco said, “the coaches rallied the boys, and they really responded.” Dayspring scored on its first possession of the third quarter.
“Caliche is a physical football team, and you find that coming out here to play these Eastern teams,” Fusco said. “The boys really rallied and embraced that challenge this week. They went toe-to-toe with a couple of big boys on that Caliche squad.”

8-man: (8) Vail Christian 12, (9) West Grand 6
In a defensive battle, Vail Christian nailed down a top-10 win. The Saints scored both touchdowns following long drives in the second quarter.
“Both teams played really well on defense,” coach Tim Pierson told the Scoreboard Show. “We’re grateful to get out of here with a win.”
“We got some big tackles for losses,” he added. “The kids just played hard.”
Vail Christian is now 4-0.

Notables
5A No. 1 Columbine went on a road trip, and beat Olathe North (Kan.) 24-21.
In 4A, Mountain Vista knocked off No. 10 Silver Creek in triple OT, 24-21.
Lamar knocked off 2A No. 7 Alamosa, 48-25.
Prospect Ridge Academy running back Seth Hagan rushed for 348 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Jefferson. Photos are here.
Overland beat Fountain-Fort Carson on the road, 29-21, and is now 3-2 — a year after going 1-9.
Manitou Springs held on to beat rival St. Mary’s on a missed field goal with 10 seconds to play. The Mustangs won 16-15.
Steamboat Springs captured the final boys golf regional on Thursday when the Sailors won Class 4A’s Region 3.
The Sailors edged Frederick by shooting 21-over as a team — one stroke ahead of Frederick’s 22-over. Windsor (+27) finished third, and Northridge and Silver Creek tied for fourth at +30.
Steamboat was led by Beck Kuhlman, who won the tournament individually at 2-over. Frederick’s Nick Formby placed second at 4-over, with Silver Creek’s Ben Harding finishing third at 5-over.
Brian McGee only had about a month to prepare for his first season as a head football coach last year.
The time crunch as he finalized a staff and installed a new offensive system led to some struggles, and Silver Creek went 2-8 in 2018.
This year, they had an entire offseason to prepare for the season, and McGee’s players have bought in to what the second-year coach wants to do.
Already, Silver Creek, sitting a 3-0, has eclipsed last year’s win total. Included are wins over Thomas Jefferson in Week 1 and a 17-14 upset of then-No. 9 Windsor last week. It was a win that was sealed by senior Caleb Sedegan’s goal-line interception late in the fourth quarter.
“That was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had as a head coach, without a doubt,” McGee said.
McGee is this week’s Denver Broncos High School Football Coach of the Week.
Previous stops: Silver Creek defensive line coach (2002-03); Silver Creek defensive coordinator (2004-17); Silver Creek head coach (2018-present).

Ryan Casey: What made you want to get into coaching?
Brian McGee: Well I grew up in Longmont and went to Longmont High School and played for coach Gordon Cramer and coach VanderMolen were my coaches at Longmont High School. After I got out of high school, I went to CSU for a couple of years and then went into the military. Spent six years in the military and then came out and basically went to work in industry, and worked in industry for about 18 years and kind of started coaching before I started teaching.
And I love it. I love the game of football. I love what playing the game gave to me when I was in high school. And I love the fact that I can give back to these kids at the high school level and, and hopefully give them some of the stuff that football gave to me when I was playing.
Matter of fact, when the company I worked for told me they wanted me to stop coaching football, my wife basically told me, “You don’t want to stop coaching football. You love it too much. Just get your teaching license.” And so that’s what I did. I teach business education.
Casey: What kind of coach do you think you are? How do you think it feels to be coached by you?
McGee: I think my players understand that I’m going to hold them accountable. I’m going to push them to achieve what I see their potential is, which sometimes they don’t necessarily agree with me, but I hope they know that I love them.
When I push them it’s because I know that they can give me more than what they’re giving me. And when we get to that point and when that happens, I think they learn that they’ve got more in them than they thought they had. It makes me feel proud that they’re living up to what I knew they could do.
Casey: What has the transition to 4A for the program been like?
McGee: I was here when Silver Creek was in its glory days — three state championship appearances in a row, winning one of them. Really the difference between those days and even last year and this year are really the kids. Do we get the buy-in from the kids?
I think the biggest difference between 3A and 4A is just the depth of your team. We’ve never had great depth just because of the size of our school. I mean we’re a smaller 4A school, but even with that, when we’ve had those teams where the seniors really buy into what we’re trying to do or they’re committed to doing what we ask them to do and they bring everybody along with them. Those are the years we’ve been successful. And you just don’t get that every year.
You know, we can’t go out and recruit. And so we get the kids that we get, and hopefully if we start them off as freshmen and by the time they get to being seniors, they know what it is. But that doesn’t always happen. Your class numbers vary all the time. It’s a process and every high school in the state of Colorado has the same issue.
It’s just, do I have that core group of kids that I can lean on and depend on that are going to bring everybody up around them? And when you have those kids, good things happen. And when you don’t have those kids, you struggle.
Casey: So what’s been the biggest difference from last year to this year? You guys have played some tough teams are are sitting 3-0.
McGee: Last year was tough because I wasn’t named head coach until right before school started. And so we had to finalize the staff and bring in a new offensive coordinator and do all that kind of stuff right before the beginning of school.
So we were learning a new system, a little bit of that. We had a fairly good number of seniors, but I don’t think they bought into what we were going to try to do with our new offense with some of the coaching changes that took place, some of that kind of stuff. This year, we had all summer to work with them. We got them all coming into our offseason stuff and being committed to what we were trying to do, not only in the weight room but with our summer conditioning and our 7-on-7s.
We won our bracket in the Broncos’ 7-on-7, which I think gave us a tremendous boost. We didn’t get to go to Dove Valley because I had too many kids also playing baseball. So we gave that spot up. But we got to do all those kinds of things together as a unit and finalized our coaching staff well before the season started. I think being in that better place was a big part of it. And then also the fact that we’ve got kids that they’ve committed to what we want to do early on over the summer and have put the time in.
Casey: Take me through last week’s game. Obviously, Windsor is a very prominent program. I think the second quarter seemed to be pretty important for you guys, going up 10 right before half. What was that game like?
McGee: After going back and forth on the two opening drives and neither one of us really doing anything, being able to go out and get the first score, I think was really important for us. That kind of proved to us, “Hey, we’re in this, we’re here, we’re here to win. We’re not backing down just because they’re Windsor.”
Being able to go in (at halftime) up 10 points was huge for us. Windsor’s a tough team and they’re going to get their yards and our kids, the resilience we had on the defensive side of the ball, and the fact that we got three takeaways. We went into that game telling our guys, “Look, you know, whoever wins the takeaway battle in this game is probably gonna win the game.” And we won it. And I think that played a key role.
They made their plays, we got some takeaways and some key moments in their drives that kind of put us in great positions and we took advantage of that.
If you’re gonna make the playoffs, if you’re going to have that caliber of team, you’ve got to learn how to take advantage when you get those opportunities. And I think we did.
Casey: You’ve got to be pretty proud as a coach, up three in the fourth quarter, that you guys were able to hold off a late rally.
McGee: Yeah, I can guarantee you that was a nail-biter there at the end. Them marching down the field and us trying everything we can to stop them.
When Caleb Sedegan, made that interception down on the goal line to stop their drive, that was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had as a head coach, without a doubt. Because we’d practiced and we’d practiced and we’d put a lot on our defense all year long and they performed when we needed them to. And that was great to see.
This week’s football rankings feature seven new teams: Legend (5A), Vista Peak (4A), Silver Creek (4A), Frederick (3A), Eaton (2A), Vail Christian (8-man), and Briggsdale (6-man).

Lutheran stunned third-ranked Green Mountain with a 19-15 upset victory in Class 3A.
Brandon Belgrave had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score to open the game, and he added an 80-yard rushing touchdown later in the second quarter.
After Lutheran went up 6-0, Green Mountain and their star QB Trey Towndrown responded with a 10-yard TD on the ground to take a 7-6 lead.
It stayed that way until Belgrave’s second-quarter touchdown, which allowed Lutheran to take a 12-7 lead into halftime.
Towndrow struck again for Green Mountain in the third, this time on a 3-yard rushing touchdown, and the Rams added a two-point conversion to go ahead 15-12.
But Lutheran wasn’t done. The Lions’ Max Rivkin found Andre Norman for a 30-yard touchdown with four minutes left in the third quarter, giving their team a 19-15 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Eaglecrest rallied from a 17-7 halftime hole, and down 24-7 in the third quarter, to win the back-and-forth contest — thanks in large part to 20 unanswered points.
Max Marsh had for three total touchdowns, including two in the final quarter, to help the Raptors rally and win.
Eaglecrest, led by Marsh, grabbed an early lead on a 2-yard run by Marsh in the first quarter. Legacy kicked a field goal to make it 7-3 going to the second.
In the second, Brayden Harris hit Jacob Duran for a 33-yard passing touchdown, and then Braelon Tate rushed for a 2-yard score to put Legacy ahead 17-7.
The Lightning pushed their lead to 24-7 when Harris hit Jaiden Peterson for a 2-yard touchdown with about five minutes to play in the third quarter.
And yet Eaglecrest was unfazed. David Creal rushed for an 8-yard score in the third to make it 24-14 going to the fourth.
And then Marsh did his thing with a 63-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the lead to 24-21, and then a 55-yard passing score to Ty Robinson, to give his team the lead — and the win.
The Raiders rallied to beat their rival after trailing 21-14 at halftime.
“Anytime we play Mullen … both teams come ready to play,” Regis Jesuit coach Danny Filleman told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “It’s just a rivalry where no one is going to give up and no one is going to give in.”
“We just stuck with it and our kids just kept playing,” Filleman added. “They kept fighting until the end. It shows the character of this team.”
Castle View beat Douglas County 28-3 to win their rivalry game for the fifth consecutive season. The Saber Cats are now 4-0, their best start since 2011.
“Our kids really work hard in Basalt, and I think it really shows on Friday nights,” Basalt coach Carl Frerichs told the Scoreboard Show of his team’s 3-0 start. The Longhorns, No. 9 in 2A, beat Pagosa Springs 39-19.
Silver Creek upset 4A No. 9 Windsor 17-14, and is now 3-0 after winning three games last season. “We’ve got a group of kids that have bought in,” coach Brian McGee told the Scoreboard Show. “They’ve worked hard all summer, they’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do, and they’re committed to what we’re trying to accomplish.”
Two 2A top-10 teams fell to out-of-state opponents. No. 2 Sterling lost to Scottsbluff, Neb., 36-13, and No. 10 Bayfield lost to Aztec, N.M., 16-14.
Lamar knocked off 1A No. 8 Burlington 43-27.
In 8-man, Vail Christian upset No. 7 Rangely 34-22.
The boys soccer rankings got a shakeup this week, and when the dust settled, Legacy (5A) and Fountain Valley (2A) were new No. 1 teams.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.
