  • No. 2 Strasburg knocks off No. 1 Limon in rematch of 1A football title game

    In a matchup of the top two teams in Class 1A football, Strasburg emerged with a 20-13 victory.

    Ahead 14-13, Strasburg chewed up the clock in the fourth quarter as they protected their slim lead. Quarterback Collin Russell secured the victory with a 4-yard touchdown with about one minute to play in the game.

    The game was a rematch of the 2018 title game, won by Limon, and pitted two of 1A’s standard-bearers against one another: The two programs have combined to win the past three 1A titles.

    The loss snapped Limon’s 16-game winning streak, which had been the longest in Colorado.

    Limon struck first on Saturday, with Jeremiah Leeper’s 4-yard run putting the Badgers up 7-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.

    Strasburg leveled the game in the second quarter, when Kody Robson punched in a 1-yard touchdown to cap a near seven-minute drive.

    After forcing a Strasburg punt, Limon marched down the first and took the lead again on a 1-yard score from Leeper, but missed the extra point, to go ahead 13-7.

    Strasburg turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession, but got the ball back when Jack Swanson came up with an interception, setting his team up with the ball at Limon’s 18-yard-line. The led to an 18-yard touchdown from Trystan Graff, which put Strasburg ahead 14-13 with one minute left in the third quarter.

    The teams traded punts in the fourth quarter, and Limon punted once more with six minutes left. Strasburg got the ball at its own 42. Two long passes from Russell pushed possession to the Limon 25 with four minutes to play.

    Then, two minutes later, Jayden Zacher rushed it down to the 9-yard-line. Eventually, Russell scored from four yards out with one minute left, helping Strasburg secure the big win.

  • Boys golf regionals: Sterling and Kent Denver capture team titles

    Two boys golf regionals were on Tuesday, with Sterling and Kent Denver walking away as team champions. Those regionals followed the six that were held on Monday.

    There are three more regionals on Wednesday, one in each classification, and a final one on Thursday.

    3A Region 1

    Kent Denver led the field with an 11-over at Hollydot, with Jeffrey Zhou leading the team, and capturing the individual title, at 5-under. The Sun Devils had two of the top three golfers in the region.

    The Classical Academy (+23) placed second, and Pagosa Springs (+32) finishing third.

    Individually, after Zhou, Pagosa Springs’ Nathan Smith was second at 3-under, and Zhou’s Kent Denver teammate Jacobo Arango was third at 2-over. The Classical Academy’s Liam O’Halloran (+5) was fourth, and Trinidad’s Lance Peters and Alamosa’s Brenden Crowther tied for fifth at 7-over.

    3A Region 3

    Sterling won the team title with a 17-over performance. The Tigers were led by Tayleb Schaefer, who tied for third at 3-over, Trey Kuntz (+6) and Chase Hume (+8).

    Resurrection Christian (+32) was second, and Frontier Academy (+36) placed third as a team.

    Individually, Luke Wright of SkyView Academy won the region at 2-under. Braxton Shelton of Brush was second at 1-over, and Max Noffsinger of Frontier Academy tied with Schaefer for third at 3-over. Strasburg’s Jacob Gilbert and Resurrection Christian’s Grant Rose tied in fifth at 5-over.
