  • Becca Schulte has Fort Collins in the race for 5A girls track champion

LAKEWOOD — Becca Schulte had never toed the line for the 800-meter run at the state track and field championships, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t keep the idea handy in her back pocket.

“I wanted to give it a better shot this year, especially when I saw that no one had run super fast yet,” the Fort Collins senior said. “I was like, ‘This could be mine.’ It’s kind of crazy looking up and seeing the time.”

Schulte, the defending 400-meter state champion in Class 5A, was the No. 3 seed for the two-lapper on Friday at Jefferson County Stadium. Her season best of 2 minutes 15.12 seconds was within reach of Dakota Ridge’s Cayli Hume at 2:14.33.

“The first lap I just tried to stay at the front of the pack,” Schulte said. “It was a little faster than what I was expecting and what I had run in the past, but it’s the state meet. I was just trying to stay there.”

The seasoned veteran, arguably Colorado’s most versatile big-school standout, started to separate from the leaders on the back stretch of the final lap.

“Then Hannah from Fairview started to come up on the outside, so I had to start picking it up,” she explained. “Then once I hit the 200 I knew it was time to go, get around that turn as fast as I could and finish that straight.”

With four competitors separated by a mere 1.20 seconds, the one with the best closing speed turned the last curve and finished the home straight just ahead of the group. Schulte’s winning time of 2:11.62 was enough to hold off Hume (2:12.07), Madison Mooney (2:12.43) and Hannah Freeman (2:12.83).

Schulte’s 10 points in the event were critical for the team race between likely Fort Collins, the favorites and 2014 champions, and Cherokee Trail, the defending champions.

Schulte is also a top-four seed in the finals of both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Denver East freshman Arria Minor, who came close to state records in both on Thursday at 23.42 and 52.80, is the No. 1 seed.

The second day of the state meet heated up in a number of events, but especially so for the 800. The race has a way of captivating the crowd — plenty of speed, tactics, and toughness all play a role in the physical and psychological challenges that come with the event.

With all five classifications going back-to-back during the afternoon session, Jeffco Stadium was alive after Shining Mountain Waldorf senior Jordan Cherin ran way under the 1A state meet record of 1:57.86.

“Before the race I had planned to start off fast,” he said. “I went out a couple seconds too fast. When Eric (Enriquez-Acosta) passed me I was already more tired than I was expecting to be. All I was thinking was that I had to stay with him. If I gave him a gap he would just blow me away.”

Enriquez-Acosta, the Idalia junior who ran away from Cherin for the 2015 title and record time, passed Cherin with about 250 meters to go. But he never let him get away and eventually passed him back while rolling to a time of 1:54.83.

The senior, who hopes to walk-on to the track team at Baylor University, had designs on his first state championship but the time caught him by surprise.

“I wasn’t expecting to run that fast,” Cherin said. “I still don’t know what to think about it, but it’s kind of unbelievable to me.”

Also the No. 1 seed in the 400 with the only 1A time under 50 seconds this season at 49.53, Cherin will have a busy Saturday with the 100 and 200 finals as well.

As for other 800 champions, Bree-ann Carwin of Baca County (2:23.58) won 1A girls, Katy Parsons of Hotchkiss (2:18.91) won 2A, Quinn McConnell of Peak to Peak won 3A (2:16.02), and Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy won 4A (2:09.97).

McConnell is part of a stellar freshman group for the Pumas. Rainsberger, if she wins the 1,600 on Saturday, will complete a distance state championship sweep in cross country, the 3,200 relay, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 junior and senior years in 4A. Her time of 10:23.24 in the 3,200 on Friday was 32 seconds ahead of runner-up Lexi Reed of D’Evelyn.

Ben Kelley, a sophomore at Soroco, shattered a record of his own in 2A with a winning 1:55.61 800 to oust Paul Roberts of Lyons (1:58.08). Jared Keul of Manitou Springs (1:55.70) was the 3A winner, while Durango’s David Moenning (1:52.26) and Poudre’s Henry Raymond (1:51.97) were the big-school champions in 4A and 5A.

On a day where a number of state records fell, Roberts added to his legacy in the 2A 3,200 with a state meet record time of 9:26.17. The Cedaredge girls 400 relay broke their own 2A state record of 49.71 from 2015 with a 49.51 in prelims. Faith Christian’s Sarah Yocum set a new 3A standard in the 300 hurdles with a prelims time of 42.45, while Discovery Canyon’s sprint medley relay (Ayannah Lang, Jenny Hall, Lianna Ubungen, Lauren Gale) shattered the 4A record with a winning 1:44.54.

The Springfield girls (Audrey Rau, Jordan Reed, Jayci Westphal, Tatelyn Lasley) broke the 1A record in placing first in the 800 relay in 1:48.27. Both Valor Christian and The Classical Academy shattered the 4A record in the same relay in both prelims and finals as Valor’s Tess Boade, Megan Maccagnan, Bianca Lopez and Gianna Tesone won in 1:39.80. TCA went 1:40.28 for second.

In the 2A boys pole vault, both Cooper Daniels of Vail Christian (15-2) and Brandon Hinkle of Yuma (14-11) launched past the 1984 record of 14 feet, 9 inches held by Bill Culbreath of West Grand. Taylor Alexander, also of Vail Christian, cleared 14 feet, 9 inches to shatter the girls all-time best.

Classification records were also broken by Brianna Van Vleet of Paonia (2A long jump), Trent Loeffler of Arickaree (1A triple jump), and Jenna McKinley of Sangre de Cristo (1A shot put).

Ian Meek of Montrose won a memorable 4A 3,200 by two seconds over Tanner Norman of TCA 9:32-9:34, while Fountain-Fort Carson boys blitzed the 5A 800 relay field in 1:25.96.

The state track and field championships resume at Jeffco Stadium at 9:30 am on Saturday with the finals of the 100 hurdles in every classification.

  • Castle View’s co-ed cheer title felt like a win for everyone

DENVER — The Class 4A/5A co-ed state champion award was just seconds away from being announced and the Denver Coliseum became completely silent.

The Castle View Sabercats were named 4A/5A coed state champions for the second year in a row. Their routine was executed to the max with proper form and technique.

When the big announcement was made, not only did the team itself get up and cheer, but other teams, coaches, and fans throughout the Coliseum celebrated their huge accomplishment, as well.

Usually a respectful applaud is the norm for situations like this, but there was an unbelievable amount of excitement during this time. Several coaches from other schools both in and out of this division stood in a line waiting to congratulate coach Heather Acampora.

Acampora makes a conscious effort to support all other teams even if they are considered competition with her team. She is not just about big schools, she is about all of them.

“In her division, out of her division, because she loves the sport,” said Nikita Breslin, coach of St. Mary’s and Vista Ridge. “We had a joint practice this morning, on her practice time, it was awesome.”

Acampora and other CHSAA coaches truly value the fact that the Castle View cheer program genuinely cares for other schools. This morning’s practice hosted at Castle View consisted of multiple teams that competed in today’s state championship.

This year’s fairly new team — with less than half of them returning for last, along with six freshmen — preparation for state was not a smooth road. They dealt with a handful of unusual injuries that were a true setback. But Saturday, they came together as one and proved themselves on the mat.

Until this year, Acampora has always had the mentality to beat other teams but she has come to the realization that she just wants what’s best for her team and for her team to be safe. Her positive attitude and change of thought turned out to be one of the best decisions she has ever made, both for her, and her team.

After 19 years of coaching, 10 at Castle View, Acampora brought in the first team victory throughout Castle View’s athletic program, and now the first back-to-back team victory in the history of the school.

The Sabercats performed a phenomenal routine with no drops, no bobbles, and no touch downs. Every skill performed was solid, clean and had Acampora so excited that she had to kick off her heels mid-routine to contain herself.

It was a great night to be a Sabercat.

  • Football rankings: Bayfield moves to the top of 2A

    (Pam Wagner/CHSAANow.com)
Bayfield is the No. 1 team in 2A this week. (Pam Wagner/CHSAANow.com)

There’s a new No. 1 in the CHSAANow.com Class 2A football rankings. After a convincing 41-7 win over Alamosa, Bayfield comes in at the top spot of this week’s poll.

The rest of the 2A rankings are relatively unchanged as no teams dropped out this week. Despite a 41-13 win over Brush, Sterling was unable to gain any spots, but look very dangerous as the No. 6 team in 2A.

Columbine held on to the top spot in the 5A rankings with an impressive 31-7 win over Chatfield Friday. The big surprise in 5A comes with Grandview’s jump from No. 4 to No. 2, overtaking Valor Christian, which won a physical 10-0 game against Cherry Creek on Friday night.

The Wolves and Eagles will play this coming Friday with the Centennial League title up for grabs. That game is scheduled for a 8 p.m. kick and Altitude will carry the broadcast.

Fresh off a 41-3 win over Durango, Pine Creek comes in as the unanimous No. 1 team in 4A. The top four teams from last week were able to hold their positions.

Denver South and Wheat Ridge both made their way into this week’s top 10 with the Rebels coming in at No. 9 and the Farmers taking the No. 10 spot. Wheat Ridge topped Aurora Central 37-14 Friday.

There were very few changes to the 3A poll this week. Pueblo East remains in the top spot after a 36-21 win over The Classical Academy.

TCA fell one spot as a result of the loss and Mean moved up to No. 9.

Buena Vista holds on to the No. 1 in 1A this week and the rankings overall went unchanged from a week ago.

In 8-man, Sedgwick County remains at No. 1 after a 44-18 win over No. 5 Dayspring Christian Academy. Vail Christian jumped two spots to No. 7 and Hohne is the lone newcomer to this week’s poll.

Fleming is still the No. 1 team in 6-man. No newcomers were added to this week’s rankings, but Peetz did fall two spots to No. 7 despite a 55-13 win over Weldon Valley.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Cheyenne Mountain takes over No. 1 in 4A

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
Cheyenne Mountain is the new No. 1 team in the 4A volleyball poll. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

For the first time in the history of the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings, Lewis-Palmer does not sit atop the Class 4A rankings.

After beating the Rangers 3-1 last week, Cheyenne Mountain now sits in the No. 1 spot. It was Lewis-Palmer’s first in-state loss since Oct. 26, 2013.

Cheyenne Mountain will host a tournament this weekend, but there will be no rematch with Lewis-Palmer as the Rangers opted to participate in a tournament in Arizona earlier this season.

Valor Christian was the only new team in this week’s 4A rankings as they break back in at No. 10.

In 5A, Cherokee Trail hangs on to the top spot. Legend jumped form No. 9 to No. 6 and defending 5A champion Grandview breaks into the poll, coming in at No. 10.

Eaton remains a unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in 3A, but a big shakeup occurred in the top three. Alamosa jumped from No. 6 to No. 3, pushing Manitou Springs down one spot.

Resurrection Christian is still the No. 1 team in 2A. No new teams were added to this week’s poll, but Union Colony and Ridgeway each jumped two spots coming in at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively.

With a stunning 3-1 upset over Idalia, Otis took the No. 1 spot in 1A away from the Wolves as the two teams head into the playoffs.

Flagler jumped five spots this week to come in at No. 3 and Briggsdale and McClave both joined the 1A rankings this. The Falcons come in at No. 9 and the Cardinals land at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday. These will be the final rankings of the regular season.

  • Football rankings: Columbine ascends to the top of 5A

    Pomona Columbine football

Following a 42-35 win over Pomona Friday night, combined with Cherry Creek’s 28-20 loss to Grandview, Columbine takes over the top spot in this week’s Class 5A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Cherry Creek falls to No. 2 as a result of their loss to the Wolves. This week, they square off against No. 3 Valor Christian in a rematch of last year’s 5A state championship game. The Bruins walked away with a 25-24 win. Cherry Creek also won last year’s regular season meeting 33-17, a game in which the Bruins didn’t allow a single point in the second half.

No new teams were added to the 5A poll this week, but with its upset win over Cherry Creek, Grandview jumped from No. 9 to No. 4.

Like they have all season long, the Pine Creek Eagles firmly held on to the No. 1 spot in 4A. Like the 5A poll, no new teams were added in 4A.

Durango was able to beat Palmer Ridge 48-35, helping them jump up to No. 5 in the rankings. The Demons travel to Colorado Springs this week for a league game against the No. 1 Eagles.

This will be the fourth time this season that Pine Creek will be facing a team also ranked in 4A’s top five. They won the three previous games by a combined score of 107-38.

Pueblo East remains a strong favorite in 3A and is still ranked as the top team in that class. Both Roosevelt and Rifle garnered first place votes thanks to weekend wins over other top 10 teams. Roosevelt topped Holy Family in a shootout, 64-63 and Rifle edged Palisade 13-7.

No new teams broke into the 3A poll this week.

    Kent Denver Gunnison football
Kent Denver remains No. 1 in 2A. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

A great week for Kent Denver continues in this week’s 2A poll. After Scott Yates recorded his 300th win, the Sun Devils held on to the No. 1 spot in 2A.

There were two new additions to this week’s 2A rankings as Moffat County comes in at No. 9 and Bennett breaks in at No. 10.

Buena Vista is still holding on to the top spot of the 1A rankings, but Resurrection Christian is nipping on their heels, trailing by only two points.

Meeker, who dropped out of the 1A poll last week, returns at No. 8.

Sedgwick County is still the top team in the 8-man rankings. There was little movement in that poll, but undefeated Vail Christian did make it’s way into the top 10, landing at No. 9.

Although Fleming is still the No. 1 team in 6-man, there was movement near the top of that poll. Kit Carson topped Eads 22-8 Friday night causing those two teams to swap places.

Kit Carson now sits at No. 2 while Eads fell only one spot to No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Legend returns to 5A poll

    Legend volleyball team
Legend volleyball is back in the top-10 in 5A. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

As the season comes into the home stretch the top teams of the CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings are all holding their positions.

Cherokee Trail, Lewis-Palmer, Eaton, Resurrection Christian and Idalia held on to the No. 1 positions in their respective classes.

The big movement in 5A was the return of Legend to the top 10. The Titans briefly held on to the No. 1 spot in 5A this season and fell out of the poll last week, despite getting a big win over then-No. 4 Rock Canyon.

Legend swept Douglas County on Tuesday, which played a part in their return to the top 10.

The top eight teams in the 4A rankings remained intact this week. The Classical Academy was the lone newcomer as they took over the No. 8 spot.

This week will see plenty of excitement in 4A as No. 1 Lewis-Palmer travels to No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain in a huge league contest. This has also become a big volleyball rivalry in the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference over the last few seasons.

After sweeping No. 2 University last week, Platte Valley is climbing back up the top 10 in 2A. They jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 as result of the win. The loss did not affect University, however, as the Bulldogs remained in the No. 2 spot.

Faith Christian joins the 3A rankings at No. 9. The Eagles fell out of the poll two weeks ago.

Panoia made the biggest jump in 2A this week, going from No. 9 to No. 6. Union Colony and Ignacio are this week’s newcomers, coming in at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively.

The 1A rankings also saw the addition of two new teams as Norwood lands at No. 9 and Walsh comes in right behind them at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Volleyball rankings: Cherokee Trail returns to No. 1 spot in 5A

Cherokee Trail has regained the top spot of the Class 5A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings. The Cougars were voted as the preseason No. 1, but early losses knocked them down in the polls.

Chatfield had held onto the No. 1 ranking since Sept. 14, but a surprising loss to Ralston Valley last week was enough to knock them off their perch. Grandview and Rocky Mountain were this week’s newcomers to the 5A rankings at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Lewis-Palmer remains the top team in 4A. Holy Family jumped two spots, landing at No. 5 this week and Steamboat Springs comes in as the lone newcomer to the 4A poll.

The Eaton Reds are continuing their impressive season and still hold a firm grasp on the No. 1 spot in 3A. Despite going 0-1 last week, Colorado Springs Christian School jumped one spot this week to land at No. 3 this week.

SkyView Academy breaks into the 3A rankings at No. 9 this week. The Hawks are winners of six of their last seven matches.

Ridgway and Limon break into the 2A rankings at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively this week. Resurrection Christian holds on the top spot in 2A despite their 70-match winning streak coming to an end.

Still-undefeated Idalia remains the top team in 1A. They’re joined in the rankings this week by La Veta (No. 8) and Community Christian (No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.
