BOULDER — Ibrahim Sylla scored a quiet eight points during the first 32 minutes of Friday’s 4A semifinal game against Cheyenne Mountain. But the nine he scored in the five-minute overtime period proved to be the difference as the Rebels hung on to defeat the Indians 79-75 to advance to the state championship game against Pueblo East on Saturday.

The Rebels had to weather the storm of the Nehme brothers who combined for 49 points for the Indians. Denver South was able to build a 13-point lead in the second quarter, while taking Gus Nehme out of the game by getting him into foul trouble.

With momentum clearly on their side, the Rebels found themselves getting comfortable which allowed Cheyenne Mountain to sink a couple of late 3-pointers — including one to beat the buzzer at the end of the first half — to cut the lead to seven. A 22-8 run to start the third quarter for the Indians put the Rebels down by seven, backing them against the wall in the waning minutes of the game.

“We just had to regroup the troops; there’s momentum swings and we expected that,” Rebels coach Malik Fletcher said. “We would’ve liked to handle the pressure better, but we’ve been in these situations before. Our team is battle tested. We’ve been in close games where we’ve had to fight back out of situations like that.”

Leading the fight for the Rebels was senior point guard Tyson Purifoy who ended with a game-high 33 points. His surge through the first three quarters of the game helped the Rebels stay within striking distance going into the fourth quarter where his teammates were able to help him seal the victory.

“I feel like it’s a team; we’re a family, so if one person is down it’s the family’s job to pick him back up” Purifoy said. “I feel like we were really prepared with practices, running and situations — everything. We were prepared for it.”

Denver South will now be looking for the school’s first state championship since 1970, which was also the last time the Rebels made an appearance in the state title game. The long-running drought has also produced some very unpleasant years for the school, something that Fletcher and his team hope to erase come Saturday.

As one of two potential teams representing Denver Public Schools, Fletcher is trying to shrug off any added pressure that might come with playing for a championship.

“There no weight (of the city on our shoulders), it’s just the same thing and the same mindset that we’ve had since the beginning of the year,” Fletcher said. “We expect to be here so there’s no added pressure; we’re just anxious to get our opportunity.”

That opportunity will come against a Pueblo East team that will be looking for its first state championship in school history. Unlike the path from the Great 8 to the Final Four, the Rebels will only have a 24-hour turnaround before taking the court again.

“I feel excited,” Purifoy said. “It’s been a long time coming, we’re going to bring (a title) back to DPS and back to Denver South.”

The 4A state championship game will tip-off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Coors Events Center in Boulder.

  • Nehme’s four-point play lifts Cheyenne Mountain over Thompson Valley in 2 OTs

DENVER — Cheyenne Mountain needed a four-point play from senior Ghassan Nehme to finally end the double-overtime Class 4A boys basketball state quarterfinal Saturday against No. 1 seed Thompson Valley.

Nehme was fouled on a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the second overtime period. The senior made the free throw to give the No. 2-seeded Indians (21-5) an 82-81 lead.

“At that time, playing in a second overtime, anything can happen,” said Nehme about his miraculous four-point play. “We were blessed and able to pull this one out.”

Nehme scored a game-high 41 points, which included 17 points in the third quarter. His younger brother Christian Nehme (20 points) sealed the victory sinking a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to give Cheyenne Mountain an 84-81 victory and the program’s first trip to the Final Four in school history.

Thompson Valley (24-2) was the final No. 1 seed remaining after Valor Christian and D’Evelyn were knocked out of the state tournament earlier in the day.

Cheyenne Mountain coach J’on St. Clair said there was no talk before the game with the Indians having a shot to eliminate the last No. 1 seed standing.

“We don’t talk about anybody else,” St. Clair said. “We focus in on ourselves because if you start looking at someone else you seem to get knocked off.”

Thompson Valley had an eight-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Indians went on a 14-0 run to take the lead.

Foul trouble also plagued the Eagles. Senior Collin Smith (17 points) fouled out with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. Also, senior starter Estevan Garcia fouled out for Thompson Valley.

Thompson Valley senior Grant Rohrbouck stepped up with a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help send the game to overtime. Rohrbouck, who finished with 26 points, put in a layup with four seconds left in the first overtime to tie it at 72-72 and send it to a second overtime.

Junior Nathan Resty hit a big 3-pointer for Cheyenne Mountain in the second overtime and Christian Nehme (20 points) was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in overtime to help the Indians’ cause.

“Christian is Mr. Clutch,” Ghassan said of his younger brother who helped guide Cheyenne Mountain’s boys soccer team to a 4A state title last fall. “He did it in soccer and now he is doing it in basketball. He is a fireball out there.”

Cheyenne Mountain will now head to the Coors Events Center in Boulder for the 4A semifinals Friday, March 14. The winner of the all-Denver Prep League semifinal between Thomas Jefferson and Denver South that was the final boys’ game on the docket Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum.

  • Arapahoe, Wheat Ridge lead preseason boys lacrosse rankings

    (Dennis Marpuri/MaxPreps.com)
Wheat Ridge is the preseason No. 1 team in 4A boys lacrosse. (Dennis Marpuri/MaxPreps.com)

Arapahoe and Wheat Ridge, last season’s champions, head the respective preseason boys lacrosse rankings.

The Warriors, No. 1 in 5A, received 10 of the 15 first-place votes in the CHSAANow.com poll, but edged No. 2 Cherry Creek by just one overall point. Arapahoe, a two-time defending champion, does have to replace its four leading scorers who graduated after last season, as well as break in a new goalie.

Cherry Creek, meanwhile, returns its top three scorers from last year’s runner-up squad, including sophomore Henry Adams (19 goals, 16 assists a year ago). Starting goalie Addison Christensen is also back.

The Bruins are followed by No. 3 Regis Jesuit, No. 4 Kent Denver and No. 5 Mullen.

Wheat Ridge won last season’s inaugural 4A title last year, and now leads the preseason poll this year. Top scorer John Roach is back, as is star goalie Jensen Makarov.

Air Academy, runner-up to Wheat Ridge last season, is No. 2. Cheyenne Mountain is third, and is followed by Thompson Valley and Valor Christian.

Complete rankings for both classes are below.

    (Courtesy of Amy Godfrey)

Cherry Creek, a program that has appeared in every girls lacrosse championship game in history, is the preseason favorite this season.

The Bruins, defending champions, received five of the six first-place votes and 58 overall points in the first CHSAANow.com girls lacrosse poll of the season.

With good reason, too: Cherry Creek returns its top five point scorers from last season’s team, including Blair Sisk (47 goals, 11 assists) and Livvy List (38 goals, 16 assists).

Air Academy, a semifinalist last season, is No. 2 in the preseason ranking. Centaurus, last season’s runner-up, is No. 3.

Arapahoe is fourth, and Chatfield rounds out the top five.
