  • Tanner O’Tremba powers Cherry Creek baseball on Day 1 of the state tournament

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — Tanner O’Tremba is good at crushing baseballs. And as a result, Cherry Creek escaped the first day of the Class 5A state baseball tournament unscathed.

The sophomore outfielder belted a three-run home run to help the Bruins beat Grandview 6-1 in the late game at Bishop Machebeuf. O’Tremba also smacked an RBI double in Cherry Creek’s 5-3 with over ThunderRidge earlier in the day.

“We’re definitely a complete team,” O’Tremba said. “Everyone was to together and it’s really easy to do a job when you have a team out there supporting you in all aspects.”

O’Tremba could easily have been seen as a member of the Bruins’ supporting cast Friday. He went 3-7 on the day with six RBIs and the solo shot in the second game.

But it was the starting pitching that truly set the tone for Creek (17-6). Carter Van Gytenbeek was consistent in the first game, working himself out of jam in the fourth where ThunderRidge had runners on second and third with one out.

He did give up three straight hits to start the fifth, which helped the Grizzlies (15-7) pull even. They tied the game on a throwing error from third baseball Clayton Gill. Gill responded by hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give the Bruins the lead back.

Against Grandview (17-6), Javis Steward was nothing short of dominant on the hill. At one point, he had struck out four consecutive hitters. He fanned 10 Wolves on the day.

“I was just trying to mix it up, keep them off guard and find my spots,” Steward said. “I was doing that pretty well today. My velocity was up, but hitting my spots helped me out the most.”

Cherry Creek will face Centennial League rival Cherokee Trail Saturday at 3 p.m. with the winner of the game in driver’s seat to win the Class 5A baseball title. That game will be played at All-City Field.

Bruins coach Marc Johnson knew all he needed from his team was for it to reach the playoffs. If that could happen, he knew the possibility existed for the Bruins to play their best baseball at the right time.

“Our season has been a roller coaster,” Johnson said. “Our whole goal from day one was to qualify and then try to play our best baseball in May. So far, knock on wood, we’ve played well enough.”

At All-City on Friday, the Cougars came away with two wins after beating Dakota Ridge 7-2 and Rocky Mountain 7-0. The Lobos had beat Mullen 5-1 in the first game of the day. Dakota Ridge and Mullen will play Saturday in an elimination game.

Grandview beat Ralston Valley earlier in the day at Machebeuf, meaning Ralston Valley will face off with ThunderRidge where the loser of that game will also be ousted from the state tournament.

Games begin at Machebeuf and All-City Field at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Valro Christian 10, Mountain View 7

Blake Donels hit a two-run double that proved to be the difference for Valor Christian in a 10-7 win over Mountain View.

The Eagles had beaten Windsor 10-4 earlier in the day and will play at All-Star Park Saturday. They’ll face Pueblo West with the winner grabbing control of the 4A baseball tournament.

    Pueblo West 7, Delta 1

After beating Longmont in a 7-6 thriller, Pueblo West took the lead against Delta off a Josh Drury RBI single and never looked back.

The Cyclones will face Valor at 3 p.m. at All-Star Park.

    Class 3A

    Manitou Springs 10, University 9

Dominic Archuleta went 4-4 with two doubles and scored three runs as the Mustangs solidified their spot as one of the four 3A teams that will be alive next week.

Travis Struble hit a home run and got the win on the mound earlier in the day as Manitou beat league rival St. Mary’s. The Mustangs will face Faith Christian Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Butch Butler Field.

Faith Christian 15, Kent Denver 5 (5 innings)

The Sun Devils could not ride the momentum of their upset over Eaton earlier in the day. The Eagles found themselves down 3-1 earlier, but their offense exploded to send them to Saturday’s 3 p.m. game against Manitou.

    Class 2A

    Paonia 7, Akron 2

Paonia broke a 2-2 tie late, then exploded for four more late runs to get the 7-3 win over Akron. With the win, Paonia advances to the 2A semifinals.

    Limon 5, Hotchkiss 3

This one couldn’t be decided in seven inning. Limon scored two in extras to get the win, putting them in the 2A semifinals where’s play Paonia next weekend.

  • Baseball rankings: 4A rankings shaken up from top to bottom

For the fourth consecutive week, the top team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings has failed to hold on to its spot.

Mountain View is the new No. 1 team in the poll, and is the third different team in 4A to be ranked No. 1 this season.

They dropped a heartbreaker to Northridge on Wednesday before taking two games from Greeley Central in three days.

Fresh off taking control of the South Central League last Wednesday, the Pueblo West Cyclones climb to No. 2 and appear poised to make a run at state championship.

Valor Christian made a sizable jump this week, landing at No. 4, five spots up from its ranking a week ago.

Longmont breaks into the top-10 at No. 6, one spot higher than Windsor who is also new to the poll.

Pine Creek remains the top team in 5A and have still only lost once on the year. Grandview and ThunderRidge trade places at No. 2 and No. 3.

Fort Collins (No. 6) and Regis Jesuit (No. 7) each climb three spots from last week’s rankings.

Legacy and Dakota Ridge are the two new teams in 5A, coming in at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively.

Eaton remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A and have yet to yield their ranking at any time this season.

University made the climb from No. 5 to No. 2 after an impressive week where they went 5-0, including two wins over league rival Brush.

St. Mary’s jumped to No. 5 thanks in part of splitting a double-header with No. 3 Lamar on Friday.

Sheridan is the lone newcomer to 3A, landing at No. 9.

Paonia took six of 10 first-place votes to remain the No. 1 team in 2A. Swink made the biggest jump in the class, coming in three spots better than last week. The Lions land at No. 4 this week.

There were no new teams in the 2A poll this week.

There was no change at the top of the 1A poll as Granada remains the No. 1 team. The top five teams from last week held on to their position.

Genoa-Hugo is the only new team in the 1A poll, coming in at No. 8 this week.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Baseball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams in the polls, including Pine Creek atop 5A

    Pine Creek baseball team
Pine Creek baseball is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A — one of three new teams atop the polls this week. (Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)

Three out of the five No. 1 positions in the CHSAANow.com baseball rankings have a different look from a week ago.

Pine Creek takes over as the top team in Class 5A, Silver Creek returns to the top spot in 4A and Granada comes in as the new No. 1 team in 1A.

The Eagles take over as No. 1 in 5A after beating Palmer 10-0 last week, avenging a loss to the Terrors that occurred only days earlier. It is the only loss of the season for Pine Creek.

ThunderRidge is nipping right at the heels of the Eagles as they sit only nine points back in voting. The Grizzlies took down Douglas County last Wednesday in a big Continental League win.

Lakewood (No. 7) and Cherokee Trail (No. 8) are the new additions to the 5A rankings this week.

Silver Creek takes back the top spot in 4A only a week after losing a grasp on the position. The Raptors went 2-0 last week, topping Northridge and Longmont to improve their record to 9-2 overall.

The bottom half of the rankings saw an influx of new teams as Northridge comes in at No. 7, Pueblo South lands at No. 8 and Palmer Ridge rounds out the rankings at No. 10.

The still-undefeated Eaton Reds remain the unanimous No. 1 team in 3A this week.

St. Mary’s is the only new team to that poll coming off a double-header sweep of La Junta on Friday. The Pirates come in at No. 8 this week.

Paonia edged out Sedgwick County by three points to remain the No. 1 team in 2A this week. Akron and Dayspring Christian are the new additions in 2A, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

A 10-6 win over then No. 1 Holly on Friday was good enough to boost Granada to the top spot in the 1A poll.

Manzanola was able to break into the rankings at No. 6 while Stratton/Liberty is the other new addition, coming in at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The 2015-16 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected by team performance at the state meet, as well.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); and strength of a weight classification’s bracket.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Pueblo South jumps into 4A poll at No. 6

The South Central League already had plenty of representation in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings. But Pueblo South was apparently feeling left out.

The Colts stormed their way into the 4A poll, landing at No. 6. They were unranked a week ago. They join league foes Pueblo West and Pueblo East, who have been fixtures in the poll all season.

Sand Creek still has a strong grip on the No. 1 spot in the class as they received 11 of 14 votes this weeks.

The top spot in 5A continues to be held by Highlands Ranch as the Falcons show no desire to relinquish their hold as the regular season nears its end.

Pine Creek remains in the top 10 despite a down-to-the-wire loss to Rampart on Friday.

No new teams were able to play their way into the 5A poll.

Manitou Springs couldn’t overtake Pagosa Springs for the top spot in the 3A poll, despite an impressive blowout win over No. 4 St. Mary’s last week.

After falling out of the rankings last week, La Junta rejoins the ranks at No. 10.

Yuma is still the unanimous No. 1 team in 2A, a welcome sight as they inch closer to the start of the playoffs.

Swink was able to give the 2A poll a fresh face as the Lions come in at No. 10.

Kit Carson hangs on to the No. 1 spot that they took over last week in 1A. While the order was somewhat different, the 10 teams in last week’s 1A poll remain the same.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls basketball rankings: Kit Carson new No. 1 in 1A

By the slimmest of margins, Kit Carson is the new No. 1 team in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com girls basketball rankings.

The Wildcats registered 95 points, only one point better than former No. 1 Sangre De Cristo, which falls to No. 2.

Kim jumped from No. 10 to No. 7 this week, but there were no new teams added to the 1A poll.

Highlands Ranch maintains the No. 1 spot in the 5A rankings, taking 13 of 15 first-place votes. In fact, the top seven teams in the 5A poll maintained their position from last week.

Rocky Mountain did join the rankings, landing at No. 10.

The 4A rankings also saw few changes as Sand Creek is still the top team with Mesa Ridge still nipping at the Scorpions’ heels.

The Western Slope got some love from the votes as Montrose breaks into the 4A poll, coming in at No. 10.

The two remaining unbeaten teams in 3A continue to sit atop their rankings. Pages Springs and Manitou Springs remain entrenched at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. St. Mary’s moved up to No. 4 and have a looming showdown with Manitou on Tuesday.

Liberty Common joins the 3A poll at No. 10.

No new teams were added to the 2A poll, which still has Yuma as the No. 1 overall team.

Kiowa did make a two-spot jump from last week, coming in at No. 7.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.
