  • Notebook: 2014 season has obliterated the football record book

There have been 57 new entries to football’s record book through Week 6 this season.

Is it the best offensive season Colorado has ever seen?

    It’s hard to say.

2014 has been special, there’s no question. We’ve seen a 553-yard, nine-touchdown rushing performance, and a new state passing record — in the same game. We’ve seen Cheraw throw nine team touchdowns in a game, also a new record.

We’ve seen Cotopaxi’s Alex Burger score ten total touchdowns in a game. D’Evelyn quarterback Owen Burke threw for more than 530 yards in consecutive weeks. Cheraw’s Tristan Headrick tied the state receiving touchdown record with six. Two players have recorded 99-yard touchdowns runs.

Last Friday, two quarterbacks threw for six touchdowns.

Pass completions, pass attempts, passing yards, rushing touchdowns, rushing yards, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, total offense, all-purpose yardage. Nothing’s safe.

Put it this way: Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig threw for an eye-popping 491 yards on Sept. 5. That’s just the fourth-best mark this season.

    But.

This is how we tally records at the CHSAA office. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

This has undoubtedly been the most closely-followed football season in terms of combing for records. After each week, we literally go through each boxscore to scan for outstanding (perhaps record-setting) performances. Additionally, our partners at MaxPreps — specifically, Gerry Valerio — have been kind enough to create a weekly report which highlights similar individual performances.

In the past, the record book has been solely reliant on schools reporting performances to the CHSAA office. And while we still verify each record-setting performance with the school or coach to ensure the accuracy of the record, finding the data is now largely on us.

“We’ve always relied on schools sending us information,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgman, who has been in charge of CHSAA’s record books for years. “Now, with a vehicle like CHSAANow and a resource like MaxPreps, we are able to go out and find these things ourselves.”

So, yes, there has been a dramatic increase in record book-worthy performances this season. But the reason for the increase likely boils down to this: When you go looking for data, as opposed to waiting for it to come to you, you will inevitably find more of it.

Expect similar record results for the upcoming basketball season. We’re also looking at restarting the volleyball record book, which has sat dormant for a few years.

    Short stuff

    • Passing this along as a PSA: Boys tennis’ state tournaments will likely be delayed tomorrow. Here’s the plan.
    • Our board of directors is taking a look at the transfer rule. Expect some type of change to be forwarded to the Legislative Council.
    • A look at field hockey’s growth as a sport.
    • There will be no Stableford scoring system for girls golf next spring. In my mind, this is a move that eventually needs to be made. Alas, not yet.
    • La Junta beat Lamar in volleyball on Tuesday night. It was their first win over Lamar since 1995, according to the La Junta Tribune-Democrat. “We wanted to end this nightmare and get it over with,” La Junta coach Heath Grantham told the paper afterward.
    • Two weeks ago, legendary basketball coach Guy Gibbs gave a speech to Regis Jesuit students about his life experiences. Midway through, he brought up CHSAA associate commissioner Tom Robinson, who was his assistant at Regis for 10 years before becoming head coach himself. Gibbs mentioned that he would often turn to Robinson on the bench at crucial points of games for his thoughts. I pointed this out to Tom, who shrugged in his way and said, “Well, I was always sitting there.”
    • In an email to CHSAA staff this week, a field hockey official who did the Regis Jesuit-Fossil Ridge game complimented the Raiders on their sportsmanship. Regis led 7-1 at halftime, “but instead of racking up an embarrassing score,” the official wrote, “(Regis Jesuit coach) Spencer (Wagner) had his team play a ‘training game’ in the second half. … At no time did they attempt to advance their 7-1 score. … Coaches like Spencer know what absolute sportsmanship is and demonstrated this (Monday).”
    • Nice column here detailing the good sportsmanship displayed by Vail Christian senior Cooper Gould, who missed a short putt that helped his opponent win the state title.
    • Lewis-Palmer volleyball is ranked No. 5 in MaxPreps’ latest national poll released Wednesday.
    • Chatfield’s Kyle Winler committed to Miami (Ohio) for baseball.
    • Two highlight packages to pass along: First from Glenwood Springs quarterback Dante Sparaco, a sophomore who is seeing wide recruiting attention already. Secondly: Doherty running back TeQuan Baker.
    • Ponderosa hired longtime Douglas County assistant Bob Maloney as its baseball coach.
    • Another new baseball coach: Jeff Allen at Fort Lupton.
    • The softball programs at Rock Canyon and Regis Jesuit raised more than $5,000 for charity on Saturday.
    • 2014 Fairview graduate Sam Martin, who holds a few career state receiving records, scored four touchdowns in Miami (Ohio)’s win over UMass on Saturday. The in-state schools made a mistake in not offering him a scholarship.
    • Lewis-Palmer grad Josh Scott, now a star for Colorado men’s basketball, graces the cover of Sporting News.
    • Grandview grad Kevin Gausman, now with the Baltimore Orioles, started the last home game in Derek Jeter’s career. “That’s pretty incredible!!” he tweeted. Now, he’s in the ALCS.

There was some upheaval in the Class 5A volleyball rankings this week as both Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail moved into the top five.

The Raptors (10-2) jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 in CHSAANow.com’s poll, while Cherokee Trail went from No. 6 to No. 3.

Rampart received 11 first-place votes and remained atop the 5A poll. The ranking added Denver East at No. 10 this week.

Each of the other No. 1 teams remained the same this week, as well, including Lewis-Palmer (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Grandview, a winner last week over then-No. 2 Eaglecrest, has made a big jump in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A volleyball poll this week.

The Wolves moved from No. 5 to No. 2 following the sweep of Eaglecrest, and another of Arapahoe.

Meanwhile, Castle View joined the 5A ranking at No. 10 following a win over No. 3 Chaparral. Chaparral remained at No. 3, just behind consistent No. 1 Rampart and Grandview.

Rampart remained at No. 1 despite its loss to 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer, which owns the claim to the best team in the state at the moment.

Each of the three other No. 1 teams also stayed put. Those are Eaton, Resurrection Christian and Fleming.

Douglas County has joined this week’s Class 5A volleyball ranking after winning the inaugural Early Bird Tournament over the weekend.

The Huskies, off to a 8-0 start, are ranked No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s poll.

The other big mover in 5A was Chaparral, which went from No. 5 to No. 2.

Olathe joined the 3A poll at No. 10, while 2A added Rye (also No. 10) this week. The 1A poll has two newcomers: No. 9 Springfield and No. 10 McClave.

All five No. 1 teams stayed the same this week: Rampart (5A), Lewis-Palmer (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A).

The biggest battle for the top spot came in 3A, where four different teams received first place votes, including Eaton, Valley, Manitou Springs and Platte Valley. Those teams are Nos. 1-4 in this week’s poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Chaparral is No. 5 in this week’s 5A volleyball poll. (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Chaparral and Regis Jesuit both joined this week’s CHSAANow.com volleyball ranking in Class 5A.

Both teams were unranked in the preseason. Chaparral joined the poll at No. 5 after going 4-1 over the first two weeks of the season. Regis Jesuit, meanwhile, is No. 10 after going 3-2.

Rampart remained atop the 5A ranking. In fact, the only No. 1 team to change this week was in 3A, where Eaton takes over for Manitou Springs. Lewis Palmer (4A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Fleming (1A) all held firm in their respective top spots.

Mullen (No. 9) was the lone newcomer in 4A, while Gunnison (No. 10) joined 3A. The 2A poll added Swink (No. 6) and Hoehne (No. 9). Cheraw joined 1A at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, polls will be released each Monday.

The 2013-14 all-state girls basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches.

The players who received the most votes in their classification were selected as the player of the year in their class.

Those players of the year: Regis Jesuit’s Diani Akigbogun (5A), Mesa Ridge’s Gabby Purnell (4A), Holy Family’s Katie Chavez (3A), Akron’s Jordan Baer (2A) and South Baca’s Allyson Grahn (1A).

  • 1A girls basketball Great 8 roundup: Norwood edges Kit Carson

    (Brock Laue)
    (Brock Laue)

LOVELAND — Norwood, the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A girls basketball state tournament at the Budweiser Events Center, had a commanding 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter over No. 7 seeded Kit Carson in the quarterfinals.

The Mavericks looked like they might run away and hide from the Wildcats, but Kit Carson showed a lot of heart and took a 28-27 lead with 5:20 remaining. Norwood never lost its cool in an exciting 38-35 victory to advance to their first final four since 2012 when it finished as runner-up to Pawnee.

Norwood held a 27-17 lead in the third quarter, but Kit Carson senior guard Brooke Crawford came alive. She was cold shooting in the first half with a mere three points, but ignited the Wildcats’ offense with 15 second-half points on an array of jumpers and drives.

The Mavericks remained poised as Jordan Williams, the leading scorer this season for Norwood with a 16.9 average, buried 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the final two minutes in a 13-point performance. Lucia Viukova, a skilled 6-foot versatile player with a good mid-range jumper, chipped in 3-of-4 free-throws down the stretch and scored 15 points.

Norwood coach Greg King, also the head boys coach for the Mavericks’ playoff team, knew the matchup against Kit Carson wouldn’t be easy.

“It’s a good thing we got off to a good, quick start, because we knew they were going to comeback,” King said. “At some time they were going to make a run, but I thought our kids, when we lost the lead the one time, they were resilient and we took the lead back. It was a good win for us.”

Kit Carson will play Dove Creek in a consolation game Friday morning.

Norwood, now 23-1 this season, moves on to face Eads in the final four Friday evening. Eads, 21-1, beat Dove Creek 56-26 on Thursday.

“We knew it would be just like this,” King said about the hard-fought win over Kit Carson. “There are eight pretty good teams here.”

    Briggsdale 34, Idalia 33

In the day’s first game, the Briggsdale Falcons led 19-10 at the half, but Reagan Shaffer and Idalia fought back to take a 26-25 lead into the fourth.

Shaffer had 12 second-half points, but the Falcons’ Leilani Carrasco drained a winning jumper with two seconds left to lead Briggsdale to a 34-33 victory and a trip to the Final Four.

The Falcons will take on No. 1-seeded Caliche in the semifinals.

    Eads 56, Dove Creek 26

The Eagles were dominant and impressive throughout with leads of 26-12 at the half and 39-17 at the end of the third.

Kailyn Lane (13 points), six-foot-one Tanaia Hansen (12 points), and Brittanie Newman (10 points), led a balanced attack for the Eagles.

Eads has nine state titles in girls basketball, with its last crown coming in 2008.

The Eagles will take on Norwood in the Final Four at 4:00 p.m.

    Caliche 69, Cheraw 32

Caliche, the girls state title favorite, looked every bit as good as their hype with a dominant 19-0 start. The Buffaloes never looked back as they used all their speed, ball movement, and pressure defense to overwhelm the Wolverines and advance to the Final Four against Briggsdale.

Four Buffaloes scored in double figures led by Jessica Taylor’s 14 points.

The Caliche vs. Briggsdale matchup will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday.
