  • No. 3 Pomona football wins 5A Jeffco title by edging No. 5 Columbine

    LAKEWOOD — Two huge scoring plays and a gritty defense is what it took for Pomona to claim the Class 5A Jeffco League title Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.

    Pomona — No. 3 in the CHSAANow.com 5A football rankings — grabbed a 14-11 victory over No. 5 Columbine to finish off an undefeated 6-0 regular season for the Panthers.

    The two Pomona touchdowns were courtesy of senior Jack Pospisil and junior Dominick Nichols. Pospisil opened the scoring up on the second play from scrimmage. The quarterback weaved his way for a 77-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers up 7-0 less than a minute into the regular-season finale for both teams.

    Columbine (4-1, 3-1 in 5A Jeffco) responded with a 20-yard field goal by senior Adam Tasei on the first play of the second quarter to cut the Panthers’ lead to 7-3.

    Nichols put the Panthers up 14-3 midway through the third quarter with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.

    Pomona did turn the ball over three times to help keep Columbine in the game. The Rebels capitalized on the Panthers’ third turnover of the game to get within a score. Junior Seth Cromwell had a big 41-yard run to get Columbine down to Pomona’s 6-yard line.

    Columbine junior quarterback Brock Zanetell scored on a 1-yard plunge and also ran in a 2-point conversion with 4:01 left to cut Pomona’s lead to 14-11. It was the only touchdown drive for Columbine as Pomona’s defense was able to slowdown the Rebels’ rushing attack for the majority of the night.

    The Panthers came up with just the offensive drive it needed clinging to a 3-point lead. Pomona junior Chase Muller had six straight carries on the ground that totaled 36 yards to drive across midfield. On third down-and-12, Pospisil faked a handoff to Muller and preceded to run 23 yards around the right side to ice the game. The senior quarterback took a knee to run out the clock.

    The Panthers and Rebels now wait to see how the seeding for the 8-team 5A state tournament shakes out. CHSAA is scheduled to release the playoff brackets Sunday.

    Pomona was No. 4 and Columbine held the No. 7 spot in the CHSAA seeding index through Week 5.

    The Rebels had a prime opportunity to take the lead before halftime, but a fumble on a quarterback to running back handoff on Pomona’s 10-yard line was recovered by Pomona sophomore Ian Frye to end the drive. The Panthers ran out the remainder of the time in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 7-3 lead.

    Columbine also turned over the ball while inside Pomona’s 30-yard-line early in the fourth quarter. A bad pitch was recovered by Pomona junior Steven Gartman to end the solid drive by the Rebels.

    It’s the second straight victory for Pomona over Columbine during this history powerhouse rivalry.

    Pomona defeated Columbine 34-33 in a thriller last season. The Panthers held off the Rebels’ fourth-quarter rally to hand back-to-back 1-point losses during conference play last season. The Rebels also lost to Ralston Valley — 24-23 — in the regular season before making their playoff run all the way to the 5A state championship game.

  • Jeffco student-athletes ink on first National Letter of Intent Signing Day

    It didn’t looked like a normal National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Wednesday.

    The current COVID-19 pandemic didn’t allow for the normal signing celebrations across Jeffco during the first of four signing days coming up for the Class of 2021. However, a number of Jeffco Public Schools student-athletes signed on Nov. 11 to continue their college careers.

    Ralston Valley had nine girls sign, highlighted by last year’s Class 5A girls diving state champion Isabel Gregersen. She will dive for Florida State University. Sydney Bevington is taking her basketball talent to Santa Clara University and Jordan West is staying close to home to play softball at Colorado State University.

    Columbine’s Korbe Otis, who helped the Rebels to their first state softball title in 2019, officially signed with the University of Louisville.

    The University of Colorado added Conifer’s Zack Gacnik to its roster. Gacnik placed third at the 4A boys cross country state championship last month in Colorado Springs.

    The next National Letter of Intent Signing Day is Dec. 16 and includes the early football signing period.

    Seven new teams have joined the football rankings this week: Cherokee Trail (5A), Conifer (3A), Valley (2A), Simla (8-man), Swink (8-man), North Park (6-man), and Mountain Valley (6-man).

  • No. 3 Columbine football flexes its muscle against Mullen

    LAKEWOOD — Columbine junior Seth Cromwell made appearance-after-appearance into the end zone Thursday night at Jeffco Stadium.

    After leaving last week’s game against Lakewood with an injury, the fullback looked to be at 100 percent in the Class 5A Jeffco League showdown. Cromwell had touchdown runs of 48, 1, 4 and 10 yards in a 32-3 win over Mullen.

    “I was crying like a baby. I thought something was torn, but it wasn’t,” Cromwell said of the ankle injury last Friday night. “I prayed to God and it got better.”

    Columbine coach Andy Lowry held Cromwell out of practice to heal up for the Thursday night game.

    “He (Cromwell) took care of it and it healed,” Lowry said. “He had a great game.”

    Cromwell’s first touchdown was his longest of the night. His 48-yard touchdown run right up the gut put Columbine — No. 3 in the CHSAANow.com 5A football rankings — up 7-0 with 7:19 left in the first quarter.

    The Rebels’ punishing rushing attack put up more than 200 yards on the ground in the first half.

    “Our line was just rolling them over,” Cromwell said of the Rebels’ offensive line. “They did their job and everyone did their assignments. Therefore we got yards.”

    Mullen (1-2, 1-2 in league) was in the game early. A 30-yard field goal by senior Aidan Lehman cut the Rebels’ lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter.

    However, Columbine scored touchdowns on its next three positions to give the breathing room the Rebels (4-0, 3-0) needed to cruise to another victory. Columbine took advantage of short fields starting at midfield and its own 45-yard line on back-to-back scoring drives to end the first half.

    “Our defense played great and helped us out with all of that,” Lowry said of the short fields to work with in the second quarter that allowed the Rebels to extend to a 22-3 lead at halftime. “Proud of our guys.”

    After a 90-yard touchdown drive by Columbine on its first possession of the second half to extend the lead to 29-3, the Mustangs did drive into Columbine territory. Lehman attempted a 61-yard field, but the kick came up just short.

    Columbine junior Wes Jones booted a 34-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.

    The game was more emotional with the passing of Ray Barron earlier this week. Barron was the head wrestling coach at Columbine, along with an assistant football and track coach. While battling brain cancer Barron came to a summer football practice on his birthday, July 15.

    “When I first heard the news it was tough,” Columbine senior Jack Forbes said. “Barron was a tough guy, but we knew it was going to happen. It killed me for the first couple of days, but he is in a better place now. It helped motivate me this week and keeps me working hard these last couple of weeks.”

    Forbes is a football player and wrestler at Columbine. Last winter, Forbes and Zach Schraeder both won state wrestling titles in the final two matches Barron would coach.

    “He motivated all of our guys in the wrestling and football,” Forbes said. “We are going to play hard for him and keep going hard for Coach Barron.”

    The tough part of the Rebels’ regular-season schedule really begins next week. Columbine is on the road at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada next Friday night against No. 8 Ralston Valley (3-1, 2-1). The Rebels then hosts No. 4 Pomona (3-0, 2-0) on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Jeffco Stadium.

    “I’m excited,” Cromwell said of facing Ralston Valley and Pomona. “Competition makes you better.”

    The Columbine versus Pomona shutdown in two weeks will likely determine the 5A Jeffco League champion and a guaranteed spot in the 8-team 5A state tournament field that begins the following week.

  • Video: Jeffco Preps With Pleuss (October)

    Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. Prep football action started up in early October. We’ve got highlights from four games — Columbine vs Arvada West, Pomona vs Lakewood, Central of Grand Junction vs Dakota Ridge and Wheat Ridge vs Chatfield — from the first few weeks of the 6-game regular season. Boys tennis season wrapped up with Lakewood and Ralston Valley having good showings at the Class 5A state tournament at Gates Tennis Center in Denver. Cross country season also concluded with the Jeffco League Championships that led into the state meet held in Colorado Springs.

  • All-state softball teams for the 2020 season

    The 2020 all-state softball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These team were created following a process where the coaches voted upon a list of nominees. Players who were named first-team all-league are eligible for the all-state ballot.

    Coaches also voted specifically for player and coach of the year.
