  • Boys golf regionals: Montrose, Rock Canyon and Montezuma-Cortez are team champs

    Montrose, Rock Canyon and Montezuma-Cortez won regional boys golf championships on Wednesday.

    This follows three regionals held on Tuesday, and six on Monday.

    A final regional will be held Thursday.

    4A Region 4

    For the fourth-straight year, Montrose has won the 4A Region 4 tournament. They finished with a team score of 223 (3-over). Mullen was second at 238. Summit and Conifer were tied for third  third at 250. Palisade was fourth at 251.

    “Great win for the team,” Montrose coach Dave Woodruff said. “Looking forward to state.”

    For the second year in a row, Micah Stangebye and Jordan Jennings tied for first at even par. Stangebye won the playoff after one hole which made him a four-time regional champion.

    “Today I hit the driver pretty well,” Strangebye said. “The pin placements were very tough on the greens. It is really great to say I’ve won the regionals as a team and individually four years in a row. Now on to state.”

    Said Jennings: “I didn’t play my best today, but hung in there. Most excited about the team. We have more more goal to reach. I’m super excited for Micah to be a four time regional champ is awesome.”

    Their Montrose teammate, Ryan Lords, tied for third along with Rhett Johnson of Mullen and Hunter Swanson of Northfield at 3-over.

    “I putted good today, but just hit a few that put me behind a little bit,” Ryan Lords said. “It is a great accomplishment to win regionals four times in a row.”

    5A Western Regional

    Rock Canyon won the region, held at Gold Course, by finishing at 3-over. Fairview (+6) was second, and Valor Christian (+17) placed third.

    The Jaguars were paced by Nick Fallin, who won the region after finishing his round tied at 2-under with Fairview’s Ryder Heuston and winning in a playoff. Rock Canyon also had Finn Olson (+2) place fifth, and Beck Duncan (+3) tie for sixth.

    Legacy’s Trenton Homchanh placed third individually at even, and Prairie View’s Jeff Nelson (+1) was fourth.

    3A Region 4

    Montezuma-Cortez captured the region, held at Aspen Golf Club, with a team score of 23-over. Host Aspen was second at 25-over, Basalt (+44) was third, Delta (+46) was fourth, and Gunnison (+60) placed fifth.

    The Panthers had the top two individual finishers, with Blake Keetch claiming top individual honors at 2-over, and Thayer Plewe (+3) placing second.

    Delta’s Atley Harris (+4) was third, and Aspen teammates Nic Pevny and Jack Pevny tied for fourth at 5-over.

  • Makayla Middleton, of Golden softball, is batting .952 through five games

    GOLDEN — It’s not even debatable who is the hottest hitter in Colorado to begin the prep softball season — Golden senior Makayla Middleton.

    The leadoff batter for the Demons has put together an incredible five-game stretch to start the season. Middleton is 20-for-21 from the plate with five home runs, 16 RBIs and 18 runs scored, all equaling up to an unthinkable .952 batting average.

    “I honestly couldn’t tell you,” Middleton said when asked to explain her remarkable start that continued Tuesday with a 5-for-5 day from the plate that included a solo home run, double and three singles while scoring four runs in a 9-2 home victory over Conifer. “I’m just going up there to hit the ball. I’m in that leadoff spot to get on base. That’s all I’m trying to do.”

    Middleton has already nearly reached her hit total from her freshman season where she finished 21-for-63 from the plate, a .333 average.

    “Has anyone had a player start 20-for-21 from the plate? She is seeing the ball extremely well. That’s obvious,” Golden coach Chad Herbers said. “She is going up the middle, going the other way and hitting line drives.”

    Makayla’s identical twin sister isn’t off to a bad start either. Makenzie Middleton is batting .773 with three home runs and 17 RBIs.

    The twins aren’t doing the damage alone for the Demons, ranked No. 5 in CHSAANow.com’s Class 4A softball preseason poll. Junior Marla Goodspeed is batting .550 with 14 RBIs and belted her second home run of the season Tuesday against Conifer.

    “That is what we needed,” Middleton said of Goodspeed’s three-run home run to give the Demons an early lead Tuesday. “Those early runs are crucial.”

    Goodspeed’s blast gave Golden an 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Demons’ starting catcher also drove in a run with a bases-loaded squeeze bunt in the fifth inning that scored Makayla from third base.

    “Marla does exactly what she needs to do,” Herbers said. “In the same game she hits a three-run home run and squeeze (bunt) somebody in. Not many people can say they’ve done that.”

    Senior Molly Hord is also batting over .500. While she was just 1-for-1 from the plate due to four walks Tuesday, she has been key batting in the No. 2 hole between the Middleton twins.

    “I think it’s confidence right now,” Makayla said of the Demons’ offense that has scored 69 runs in five games.

    Golden senior pitcher Emma Graham has been solid in the circle. Graham didn’t play high school softball last season after transferring from Lakewood High School. She has been just what the Demons needed to fill the shoes of graduated three-year starting pitcher Cassidy Paulson.

    “I really enjoy the team,” Graham said after allowing just two runs and three hits in a complete-game victory over Conifer. “We have a really good dynamic. I’m able to depend on girls when maybe everything doesn’t go perfectly.”

    The Lobos (1-3 record) touched up Graham with a two-run single by Conifer sophomore Cheyenne Prieto, but he senior retired the next seven batters she faced to close out the game.

    “She (Graham) has stepped up and is throwing strikes,” Herbers said. “She has bought in to the defense and letting them work for her.”

    Golden is back on the field on the road against Thomas Jefferson at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. The Demons should get a good test against 5A Jeffco’s Arvada West on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

    Conifer has another road game against a 4A Jeffco program. Wheat Ridge (3-1 record) hosts the Lobos at Pennington Elementary at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29.

  • Jeffco boys golfers tackle tough Bear Creek Golf Club

    LAKEWOOD — It’s not even September, but Monday’s boys golf tournament marked the midway point of conference play for the Class 5A and 4A Jeffco League.

    On the toughest of the six courses of the Jeffco League tournament schedule, Chatfield senior Max Heupel soared up 5A individual standings with a strong 1-over-par, 73. Heupel was six strokes better than Arvada West’s junior Zach Tyson and Valor Christian’s tandem of Logan Byler and Lucas Schulte, who all shot rounds of 79.

    Heupel is tied with Lakewood sophomore Max Lange atop the 5A Jeffco individual standings. Valor widened its lead in the team race over second-place Ralston Valley and third-place Lakewood.

    Defending 5A Jeffco individual medalist — Lakewood junior Ryan Liao — shot a round of 80, but did have one of the highlights with a hole-in-one on the No. 7, 99-yard par 3.

    On the 4A side, Golden’s Grayson Flambures took the individual title with a round of 80. The Demons also edged Evergreen by six strokes in the team race. Golden and Evergreen are locked in a tight race for the conference team title. The Demons are one stroke ahead of the Cougars with three league tournaments remaining.

    Evergreen’s Clayton Whitton and Jack Mitchell are currently one-two in the overall 4A Jeffco individual standings. Green Mountain sophomore Ollie Gibbons is third, Flambures and Conifer junior Dakota Dolph is tied for fourth.

    The final three Jeffco League tournaments are scheduled for Indian Tree (Aug. 30) West Woods (Sept. 9) and The Broadlands (Sept. 17).

  • Jeffco boys golfers hit the links at Deer Creek GC

    LITTLETON — A 7:30 a.m. shotgun start for the second boys golf Jeffco League tournament Tuesday morning allowed golfers to avoid temperatures the 90s at Deer Creek Golf Club.

    The defending Class 5A Jeffco League medalist — Lakewood junior Ryan Liao — actually wasn’t at the second conference tournament of the season. Liao was in New Jersey playing in the KJ Choi Foundation Junior Championship.

    Lakewood is primed to be in contention for high individual and team accolades this fall. Liao is back after placing fourth at state last season. The Tigers finished second at state in the team standings, five shots behind Fossil Ridge.

    “We are really driving toward that state championship,” Liao said during the CHSAA Media Day on Aug. 9. “We want to get Coach G (Alan Gonzales) one. He deserves one. That is the main goal for us.”

    Lakewood coach Alan Gonzales has guided the most consistent boys golf program in Jeffco for the past several years. The Tigers placed second in the 5A state tournament in 2014, 2015 and 2018 to go along with a third-place finish in 2016.

    Lakewood sophomore Max Lange won the first medalist title in the opening Jeffco League tournament Aug. 12 at Applewood Golf Course. Lange shot a round of 65 for a six-shot victory. Lakewood junior Noah DiBiase and sophomore Jace Wright gives the Tigers a legitimate shot at the program’s first team title.

    “My team has really stepped up their game. It relieves a lot of pressure on my part,” Liao said. “Of course I want to go for the (5A Jeffco League individual medalist) again, but the main thing is the team.”

    Ralston Valley and Valor Christian will likely be right on the Tigers’ heels in the race for the conference title that concludes with the final league tournament Sept. 17 at the Broadlands.

    On the 4A side, Evergreen will be the favorite with senior Clayton Whitton leading the way for the Cougars. Jake Dekoker and Jack Mitchell gives Evergreen not only a chance for another conference team title, but a chance to be in the mix for the 4A state title.

    Conifer junior Dakota Dolph and Green Mountain sophomore Ollie Gibbons — both finished in the top-20 at the 4A state tournament last season — look to break into the top-10 in 2019.

  • All-state baseball teams for the 2019 season

    The 2019 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

    Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.
