  • 4A boys golf: Stangebye goes low as Montrose hunts for third straight title

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

MONTROSE — There’s no place like home. That was certainly the case for Micah Stangebye and the rest of the Montrose boys golf team after the first day of the Class 4A boys state golf tournament.

Stangebye, the winner of last year’s state tournament, didn’t card a bogey on his day and shot a 4-under-par 67 to take a three-stroke lead over Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford and Northfield’s Hunter Swanson.

Stangebye’s steady approach had him even after six holes before he found his first birdie on the 170-yard par 3 seventh.

He ramped things up after making the turn, making back to back birdies on 10 and 11 to move to 3-under.

“I was hitting the ball really well, hitting the down the middle and then I’d hit the greens and it just came down to either making the putt,” Stangebye said. On the back nine I made a couple of more birdies.”

Stangebye’s round set the tone for Montrose, but he got help from fellow senior Ryan Lords who shot a 73. That’s good enough to sit at a tie for fifth place individually but overall it was a big boost in the team race.

Montrose finished the day just 4-over as a team and will have a chance on Tuesday to claim a third consecutive team title. It helps that they’ll have a chance to do it the The Bridges, which serves as the team’s home course.

“The kids played really well today. Knowing the course is an advantage for us,” coach Dave Woodruff said. “I think tomorrow, especially for our seniors, let’s just play like we did today and stay relaxed and both seniors just went out and just played phenomenal golf. I’m really happy for them.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Pueblo West sits in second place in the team race at 18-over. Freshman Noah Wagner and junior Toby Salinas each shot 76 to put the Cyclones in a position to go home with some hardware. But like Montrose and its bid for another championship play, West will have to see similar – preferably better – numbers on Tuesday.

Ford made the turn at 1-over before making consecutive birdies at 14 and 15. He made par on the last three holes to finish a round of 70.

Swanson, however, took a bit of a different route to his 70. He was sitting at 2-under heading into his 18th hole but finished on a bogey. He had eagled the hole in his Sunday practice round so it was a little discouraging, but overall wasn’t upset with his day.

“I’m pretty happy with my round,” Swanson said. “I made a couple bad decisions that led to a few bogeys but can’t be mad with it. And it was a nice little 1-under round for the first round.”

He’ll have some work to do if he’s going to catch Stangebye. The Montrose senior has course knowledge on his side and a good mental approach to his game. That was evident on the par-5 10th when facing a downhill, right to left putt for eagle.

His goal wasn’t necessarily to make it, but rather to get it close enough for an easy birdie, which he did. It was that hole that started his accumulation of red numbers on the back nine.

“On that putt speed was the most important thing,” Stangebye said. “You can’t blow it by or leave it well short. I had a pretty good putt that just rolled four or five feet past the hole and then made it coming back.”

That same approach will go a long way in his winning a state title on Tuesday. But it can’t just be mental. He has to execute the shots as well, which is something he has shown time and time again that he is more than capable of doing.

  • No. 7 Palmer Ridge volleyball takes down No. 1 Discovery Canyon

    (Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com)

MONUMENT — The Discovery Canyon Thunder came into The Cave at Palmer Ridge High and made a ton of noise, but it was the Palmer Ridge Bears who had the final say, winning 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9.

It’s a win that can reshape the outlook of the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference as the Thunder was ranked No. 1 in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com rankings with the Bears checking in at No. 7.

Senior Naeemah Weathers sealed the victory with a vicious spike, giving the Bears a 15-9 win in the final set. Weathers also had some key blocks in the middle sets that gave Palmer Ridge the momentum they needed.

Weathers said that the message before the final set was that if they fought as hard as they did in the first sets that they played, that they needed to finish through no matter what

    (Derek Lee/CHSAANow.com)

“Even if we lost, we had to push our hardest,” said Weathers. “We lost to (Discovery Canyon) in state last year so that was a big motivator for us to be able to beat them in a home game in our gym and just be able to take it home.”

“They’re just as tough as they were last year,” said Bears head coach Trevor Sullivan. “I’m very proud (of my girls)), their tenacity was probably my favorite thing. We kept our foot on the accelerator, we’ve got to push to the end.”

Discovery Canyon took the first set, but Palmer Ridge was able to even it up one apiece after the second set. The Thunder won the next set by a slim margin after Palmer Ridge lost the lead late in the set, but the Bears came roaring back with seven-point win in set four.

“I like to tell our team if the first few sets don’t necessarily go our way that we have to decide what team we want to be,” said Sullivan. “I think at that point we decided that we were going to be the team that was the aggressor in this one.”

The final set was all Palmer Ridge as they jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and never relinquished it.

“We had momentum going into that fifth set,” continued Sullivan. “So that was kind of my mindset going into that and again focusing on being the aggressor and not waiting for teams to strike at us but striking first. (Discovery Canyon) is an awesome team and I think that’s how our league stacks up. Every night we go out, it’s going to be a battle just like this.”

The Bears now stand at 8-4-0 while Discovery Canyon suffer just their third loss of the season. The Thunder are now 10-3-0 on the season.

  • Boys golf regionals: Arapahoe’s Wilkinson among Monday’s medalists

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Arapahoe’s Matthew Wilkinson likes golfing in Colorado Springs. The sophomore had himself a day on Monday at the Colorado Springs Country Club where he shot a 4-under-par 67 to win the Class 5A Southern Regional golf tournament.

He didn’t get a fast start as he bogeyed the third hole of the day, but got on track with a birdie on No. 4, a 199-yard par 3.

He went out in 34 and turned it on once he got on the back nine. He made birdies on 11, 15 and 16 to claim the win over Regis Jesuit’s Bo Wardynski by three strokes at a course that Wilkinson saw as good prep for the 5A tournament which will be at Pinehurst.

“It’s a similar to the state course,” he said. “It’s tree-lined, tough greens, fast greens and firm fairways.”

The Warriors also got top-five finishes from Will Kates and Max Zadvorny to take home the team title. Arapahoe and Regis Jesuit were the top two teams in the tournament, earning automatic bids to state.

As for Wilkinson, he’s hoping that he he can take what he did at regionals to state in two weeks.

“I was in a groove,” he said.

    Class 5A, Northern Region

Fossil Ridge’s Gavin Hagstrom got the win shooting a 5-under-par 67 at Broadlands. Three players finished the day in red numbers, the most of any 5A regional on the day.

The Sabercats also won the team championship. Broomfield claimed the other team qualifying bid, eding Castle View by just a single stroke.

    Class 5A, Central Region

Lakewood’s Ryan Liao led the field with a 2-under-par 70 at South Suburban. Cherry Creek’s Charlie Flaxbeard was the only other kid to shoot under par and it was the Bruins who came away with the team win by placing three kids in the top 16 spots.

Highlands Ranch finished second to secure a trip to Pinehurst in two weeks.

    Class 4A, Region 2

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Golden’s Chankrit Sundurapura kept himself under par for most of the day but struggled on the par 4 16th hole at the Country Club of Colorado. The 16th was his final hole of the day and the tricky pin placement led to a three-putt, ending his day with a 1-over-par 72 to take medalist honors.

Site host Cheyenne Mountain had three players in the top-seven to take the team title. Ponderosa shot 28-over as a team to also qualify for the 4A tournament at The Bridges Country Club in Montrose.

    Class 4A, Region 1

Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford shot a 1-over-par 73 to get the win at Desert Hawk. He doubled up with wins as the Thunder shot 21-over to edge Pueblo West by three strokes.

Individual qualifiers from Coronado, Canon City and Durango also came out of Region 2.

    Class 3A, Region 2

Prospect Ridge Academy’s Walker Franklin made par on the first playoff hole to secure medalist honors at 3A’s Region 2 tournament. Holy Family claimed the team title with Colorado Academy securing the other team berth at the 3A state tournament.

The qualifiers will be back on the course in two weeks at the Eisenhower Blue Course at the United States Air Force Academy.
