GOLDEN — Good things can happen on the baseball field when you simply put the ball in play.
That statement proved to be the endgame motto for Golden in its home and season opener Saturday afternoon against Elizabeth. Things looked pretty bleak for the Demons after a two-out, two-run double by Elizabeth sophomore Sage Ferguson gave the Cardinals a 9-6 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
Despite trailing since the third inning and needing a late-inning rally to pull out a victory, Golden came through with a four-run bottom of the seventh inning to grab a dramatic 10-9 win.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take what we can get,” Golden junior Ben McLaughlin said moments after the walk-off victory.
Seth Kenner, James Douthit and McLaughlin got things going in the bottom of the seventh inning with three consecutive hits to start the rally. Douthit’s double drove in Kenner and McLaughlin’s double scored Douthit to trim Elizabeth’s lead to 9-8.
“We were striking out early in the game, but we were able to put things together and when you put the ball into play good things happen,” said McLaughlin, who finished with three hits and scored four times.
Junior Zane Covey drove in the game-tying run with a foul ball down the left field line that was caught, but McLaughlin tagged up and scored from third base. The bottom half of the lineup got things going with the bases cleared and no outs.
Junior Conrad Holmes was hit in the helmet with a pitch to get on base. Sophomore Ty Howe grounded to shortstop, but the Cardinals committed an error to keep the inning alive.
“We didn’t take advantage of some situations early in the game,” Golden coach Jackie McBroom said. “We did a better job of that late, but we need to do that earlier.”

It was better late than never for freshman Ethan Lewis. While the freshman struggled at the plate striking out in his first three at-bats, Lewis came through with a flare over the second baseman. Elizabeth’s right fielder had a beat on the fly ball, but it was dropped and pinch-runner Jackson Philleo scored from second base to give the Demons the dramatic 10-9 victory.
“I know we didn’t necessarily played our best baseball, but getting a ‘W’ out of it makes me happy,” said McBroom, who liked what he saw from a pretty inexperience team when it comes to varsity playing time.
McBroom returns just a couple of players from last year’s team with much varsity playing experience.
Lewis pitched the final two innings for the Demons to pick up the victory. McLaughlin went the first five innings on the mound.
“He (McLaughlin) is going to be our guy on the mound. He knows what he is going out there,” McBroom said. “He is going to be big at the plate. He is a good baseball player.”
Elizabeth had to swallow the tough loss despite a great pitching effort from senior lefty ace Tyler Richardson, who went the first four innings with six strikeouts. Senior Casey Berndt showed off his power with a three-run opposite field home run off of McLaughlin in the Cardinals’ five-run third inning.

EDGEWATER — The first day of the Class 3A Region 3 wrestling tournament was held on Friday.

FLORENCE — According to rankings going in, the Mel Smith Husky Invitational probably should have been Pagosa Springs’ show. Don’t tell Eagle Valley wrestling that, though.
The Devils came to prove something. And, after 31 hours of wrestling, they had made a few new believers.
“We’ve had a tough time at this tournament in years past. We knew coming into this tournament we had to wrestle at our best, ” remarked head coach Luke Cross.
And that’s exactly what the Red Devils did.
Although Eagle Valley didn’t end up with even one individual title, but they came together as a team, placed in half of the weight classes, and kept piling up points until the rest of the 30 teams at the tournament were in the rear-view mirror.
That’s not to say the Devils had no special efforts.
In particular, Cross singled out the effort of 182-pounder Davis Ward: “He just really stepped it up. He’s overcome a lot of adversity in his life, and he got third place today. … The kids kind of rallied around that and we all wrestled better with his leadership.”
How much better? Eagle Valley logged three second-place finishes, two thirds, and two fourths.
The seconds went to Matthew Medina at 106, Lucas Comroe at 132, and Noah Baldwin at 152. The Devils did not bring wrestlers in two weight classes, but every wrestler they did bring contributed to the overall winning point total of 168 points.
Hot on Eagle Valley’s heels were the teams from Eaton and Pagosa Springs.
Like Eagle Valley, both Pagosa and Eaton found it difficult to win weight classes. Eaton got their lone individual title on the last match of the evening, courtesy of a late flurry that gave Jeremy Murano the title at 285 pounds.
Pagosa’s Cameron Lucero wrestled perhaps the most entertaining final of the entire evening, going back and forth with Clay Yarnell of Olathe before getting the pin at 3:06. Though both are from the western slope, Lucero had not met Yarnell until this evening. Lucero offered, “I knew he was good on top.”
But Lucero gave Yarnell very little opportunity to show any of that. On the other hand, Lucero took some opportunities that might have left a lesser wrestler on his back. In the end, though, it was Yarnell who ended up on his back.
Lucero smiled about it after it was over, “If you don’t take chances, you don’t win.”
Valley led all schools with three individual titles on the weekend — Isaiah Rios at 138, Colin Brown at 152, and Jaziah Whaley at 160. As sharp as the Vikings were in the middle weights, however, they simply didn’t have enough wrestlers with them to make a serious run at the title. They will, however, undoubtedly be heard from at state.
The only other team with multiple individual title winners was Elizabeth with two. Kris Kramer took the crown at 113 pounds and Abe Leonard pinned his way through the bracket at 195.
Other individual title winners included Brady Hankin of Woodland Park at 106, Ethan Andrade of Lamar at 120, Zach Loft of Sterling at 126, James Ruona of Canon City at 132, Wyatt Pfau of Brush at 170, Nathan Johns of The Classical Academy at 182, and Eli Smith of Salida at 220.
Tim Yount’s rankings generally held true, but there were bits and pieces of new ground turned over.
Ethan Andrade of Lamar dropped down from 126 to beat 120 No. 1 Isaiah Gamez of La Junta. Isaiah Rios jumped all the way up from No. 5 at 138 to win the title over previous No. 1 Dylan Yancey of Eaton. Most impressive of all, Colin Brown of Valley was ranked No. 14 at 145 before taking the crown at 152.
But the disruption there, significant as it is, probably still doesn’t eclipse the disruption brought by the rise of Eagle Valley as a certifiable 3A team contender.

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

Six of the seven state qualifiers for the Elizabeth girls cross country team share a lot in common. Mainly sets of genetics.
Caela and Ella Benkendorf, Alaina and Brenna Jones, and Ashten and Masen Loeks will all compete for the Cardinals on Saturday at the state meet which is held at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs.
The three sets of sisters have helped Elizabeth’s standards in the sport reach a high level. But it wasn’t always like that.
When the Jones sisters, fraternal twins, Ella Benkendorf and Ashten Loeks all came in as freshman, the Cardinals weren’t exactly known for cross country success. But those three helped change the standards the team would try to live up to.
“When the older four girls each came up, they set a whole new standard and a whole new level of expectation for our program,” coach Alan Small said. “We hadn’t been on the state scene or anything like that. They helped bring in something that we had never had before. And so the younger siblings kind of came in expecting how it is. We’re supposed to be competing for things and we’re supposed to doing these kinds of things. The expectations were completely different for the younger ones that have come in.”
But those standards, along with the arrival of the younger Benkendorf and Loeks girls have made the team competitive and a fun environment for the entire team.
At regionals last week, all seven Elizabeth runners finished in the top 21 of the race. The seventh runner is the team’s adopted sister Isa Tebrugg. Small quickly points to her as the glue that holds the team together.
Not that they don’t along. Quite the contrary. Three sets of the girls might share the same last name, but from a personality standpoint, they couldn’t be more different.
“They’re all unique,” Small said. “Every single one of those girls is completely different from the other. It’s kind of funny. They are a hoot, but they are so unique. Each one of them.”
Heading into this week’s meet, the girls are taking the chance not just to try and compete for a state title, but to relish in one of the last events where they’ll compete together.
A lot can be said about sibling rivalry and how it plays into high school athletics, but these girls don’t let it come into play.
There’s not even a sense that they privately want to compete with each other in practice situations. They’d rather take the time to help each other get better so that the team can achieve more.
“They’re pretty chilled when it comes to all that,” Small said. “Even though they’re all sisters, they have a great sense of family (with each other) throughout the year. Just like any team, we spend a lot of time together. We do a big summer camp where we all get together. They’re not hyper-competitive in practice with each other. They want to do well together.
Doing well this year would be a great way for their time together to end. With four of the girls graduating this year, it’s on Masen Loeks and Caela Benkendorf to carry on the level of competition that they came into when they joined the team
“We lose five strong competitors,” Small said. “Those younger two realize they want that trend to continue and maybe even try to find a way to elevate where we’ve been in the past.”
That’s a concern for down the road. The main priority for each girl, regardless of class, is to try and get the best result this weekend.
The most important part from the team perspective is that they get to do it together. There was uncertainty early in the year if they would be able to do so, but as the state meet has come closer, the team has really started to come into its own.
“Caela had been hurt early this year and there was concern of whether she would be healthy enough to compete throughout the year,” Small said. “They were really upset early on that they might not have the chance to share this moment together. If you look at the last few weeks, Masen has really just come on. What it’s done for all of them is that they trust each other and they know that on any given day one of the younger ones can have a great race or one of the older ones can come out and have a great race.”
Come Saturday it won’t matter who has the best race. It won’t matter if one sister finishes faster than the other. The only thing that matters is that they’ll compete together just as they always have.
