  • Boys soccer rankings: All three defending champs lead preseason polls

All three defending boys soccer champions have been declared favorites according the CHSAANow.com boys soccer polls.

Broomfield, Evergreen and Kent Denver all took the No. 1 spots in their respective classes as each team will look to repeat their title runs from a year ago.

In the Class 5A rankings, the Eagles edged out Mountain Vista, the team that they needed overtime to beat in the state championship game last fall.

The Golden Eagles took three first place votes and hold the No. 2 spot heading into the regular season.

Fairview, Arapahoe and Boulder round out the top five teams in the initial set of rankings. All three of those teams advanced to at least the state quarterfinals in 2015.

Heritage, which was a semifinal team last year, comes in at No. 7.

In the 4A rankings, state runner-up TCA lands at the No. 2 spot behind the Cougars.

Cheyenne Mountain takes the No. 3 spot while Standley Lake takes No. 5. Both teams advanced to the semifinals last year and are looking at staying just as competitive in 2016.

Air Academy, which won the 4A title in 2014, lands at No. 4.

All totaled, each team that advanced to last year’s quarterfinals will be ranked to start the season.

The Gore Rangers lost to Kent Denver in the semifinals before the Sun Devils went on to beat Fountain Valley in the 3A title game.

The Danes will start the season at No. 3.

KIPP and Faith Christian will make up the rest of 3A’s top five teams. KIPP advanced to the state quarterfinals and the Eagles lost to Peak to Peak in the second round of the tournament.

After advancing to the semifinals last year, Coal Ridge will start the season ranked at No. 6.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

  • Girls soccer rankings: Top teams holding strong

    Lewis-Palmer girls soccer team
Lewis-Palmer was one of four No. 1 teams to stay put in the girls soccer rankings this week. (Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)

The top teams are holding strong in the CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings. Grandview, Lewis-Palmer, Kent Denver and Vail Mountain all held on to their No. 1 spots as the regular season comes to a close this week.

There was not a lot of over change in the Class 5A rankings. There were no newcomers and the only change in position was Regis Jesuit moving up one spot to No. 6. They simply traded places with No. 7 Broomfield.

A similar occurrence happened in the 4A rankings. There were no new teams to play their way in and any change in place happened mostly by one or two spots.

In 3A, the top four teams all held on to their spot from a week ago. Peak to Peak climbed to No. 5, SkyView Academy climbed to No. 8 and Manitou Springs jumped to No. 9.

Sterling is the only newcomer to any classification this week, landing at No. 10 in the 3A rankings.

The same five teams from last week occupy the 2A rankings. the Dawson School jumped one spot to No. 2 and Front Range Christian dropped one spot to land at No. 3.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

With the regular season wrapping up this week, these will serve as the final rankings of the regular season. The state tournament brackets will be announced on CHSAANow.com on Sunday.

  • Girls soccer rankings: 5A poll adds Pine Creek

Pine Creek is back in the picture when it comes to girls soccer. The Eagles come in at No. 9 in this week’s Class 5A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings and are the only new team in the poll.

Grandview is still firmly in control of the top spot as they received all 12 first-place votes.

With the exception of the Eagles joining the rankings, the 5A poll remained very consistent from a week ago.

The same can be said be for this week’s 4A rankings. Lewis-Palmer is still the overwhelming pick as the No. 1 team in the class.

The top eight teams from a week ago all remained in the top eight spots this week, the only difference being Air Academy (No. 6) and The Classical Academy (No. 7) trading places.

Steamboat Springs (No. 9) and D’Evelyn (No. 10) are the two new teams to break into the rankings this week.

Kent Denver is still the top team in the 3A poll with Colorado Academy only one point behind them at No. 2.

Manitou Springs comes in at No. 10 this week, the only new team in the 3A rankings.

Vail Mountain hangs on to their place at No. 1 in the 2A rankings. Front Range Christian and the Dawson School swapped places at No. 2 and No. 3.

There were no new teams in the 2A poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • No. 7 Fountain Valley girls soccer gets rare win over No. 10 St. Mary’s

Fountain Valley St. Mary's girls soccer
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — A Fountain Valley girls soccer victory over St. Mary’s is sort of like a Halley’s Comet sighting. Neither one comes around very often.

In fact, after the Danes topped the Pirates 5-2 Thursday afternoon, both Carter Gwinn and coach Byron Dacy thought it was the first time in program history that Fountain Valley had come out on top.

But longtime St. Mary’s coach Gregg Braha knew better.

“Since I’ve been coaching, that’s not true,” Braha said. “They either beat us in 2004 or 2005.”

Braha maintains that in whichever year it was that the CHSAANow.com No. 7-ranked Danes (6-1 overall, 2-0 Class 3A Region 1) last won, they went on to win the league title. And that pattern is appearing to repeat itself.

Fountain Valley controlled most of the game, jumping out to an early 2-0 thanks to two shots from 35-yards out from Gwinn, who would go on to finish with a hat trick on the day.

“I just let them rip,” Gwinn said. “I started playing forward just a few years ago and they’ve just taught me to be patient. But sometimes I just get a little too much energy and just rip it as hard as I can.”

The Pirates (6-4, 2-1) were able to cut the lead in half thanks to a penalty kick from Faith Heery. But in the 31st minute, McKenna Monk was able to get that goal back and put the Danes back ahead by two.

Early in the second half, Gwinn was able to get some great looks at a third goal, but wasn’t able to connect.

The Pirates seemed to a better job of balancing out control of the ball and even got some better looks at the Fountain Valley net. It was the second game for St. Mary’s since their star forward Scooter Ross left the team and withdrew from school on Monday.

Braha commended his girls for their ability to remain resilient on the pitch through the whole process.

“I think it’s been hard for the girls, they were a bit surprised,” Braha said. “The coaching staff is sitting here thinking ‘What do we do?’ and the girls are moving on very quickly.”

Trailing 4-1 in the second half Heery was able to score another goal to move the Pirates to within two. But a penalty in the box gave Gwinn another chance at a hat trick and she was able to connect on it.

“She’s been brilliant all year,” Dacy said. “She’s really wanting to make the most of her senior year and she’s doing that. She’s stepping up and scoring goals when we absolutely need them.”

With the win over the Pirates, the Danes are now in a position to come away with a league championship which would allow them to host when playoff time rolls around.

Their next league game will be Tuesday when they host James Irwin.

St. Mary’s will travel to Peak to Peak and Rye for a couple of non-league games before they jump back into league play when they travel to James Irwin on Arp. 28.

  • Girls soccer rankings: Regis Jesuit added to 5A poll at No. 8

The play of the Regis Jesuit Raiders has certainly been of top-10 quality and, as a result, they join the Class 5A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings at No. 8 this week.

They join a tough field in which Grandview has a unanimous hold on the No. 1 spot in the poll. Rocky Mountain made an impressive jump from No. 8 to No. 4 thanks to wins over Mountain Range and Greeley West.

Regis Jesuit was the only new team to join the 5A rankings.

In 4A, avenging a state championship game loss from last May was good enough to keep Lewis-Palmer in the top spot.

Cheyenne Mountain dropped to No. 5 as a result of the loss.

A 2-0 win over Heritage was good enough for voters to make Ponderosa the only new team to join the 4A poll, where the Mustangs land at No. 10.

Kent Denver took six of 10 first-place votes to remain the top team in the 3A rankings. They are still followed closely by Colorado Academy. In fact, the Mustangs came within a point of taking the top spot from the Sun Devils.

SkyView Academy and Lutheran join the 3A rankings this week at No. 8 and No. 9 respectively.

Vail Mountain is still the top team in 2A, taking six of seven first-place votes. The five teams from last week’s poll remain the same, with the only difference being Cornerstone Christian and Denver Christian trading spots at No. 4 and No. 5.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

  • Girls soccer rankings: New No. 1 teams in 3A, 4A

An overtime win over Colorado Academy was good enough to make Kent Denver the new No. 1 team in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com girls soccer rankings.

The Sun Devils dropped a game over the weekend to Smoky Hill, but in the voters’ eyes they look to be the top team after taking down the Mustangs in a head-to-head showdown.

Fountain Valley and Sterling are starting to make some noise amongst the ranks and as a result, broke into the top 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 respectively.

There was also a new No. 1 team atop the 4A rankings as Lewis-Palmer assumes the top spot, edging out league foe Cheyenne Mountain.

Ironically, it was the Indians who helped the Rangers claim that spot as they won a 4-3 thriller over former No. 1 Valor Christian on Saturday night.

Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer will square off Wednesday night at Don Breese Stadium.

The only newcomer in this week’s 4A poll was Littleton at No. 10.

Grandview still has a firm hold on the top spot in the 5A rankings, easily fending off No. 2 Mountain Vista.

Rock Canyon made a sizable jump this week, landing at No. 5 which is up five spots from their No. 10 ranking a week ago.

The 5A poll welcomes two new teams this week as Rocky Mountain comes in at No. 8 and ThunderRidge rounding out the poll at No. 10.

Vail Mountain is still the No. 1 team in 2A as the entire poll itself went unchanged from a week ago.
