  • Football roundup: Aspen, Middle Park combine to score 130 points; Fruita tops Montrose

    Well, here’s one way to start a football season.

    Aspen and Middle Park combined to score 130 points when the two teams opened the year on Friday night. That total sits just outside the CHSAA record book.

    According to the Aspen Times, the Skiers racked up 707 yards of total offense, and quarterback R.J. Peshek accounted for six touchdowns.

    It was a crazy night.

    “Words can’t explain it,” Peshek told CHSAANow after the game. “Everyone just played out of their mind. The O-line, it wouldn’t have worked without them. It finally clicked for us.”

    The two teams were tied at 20 after the first quarter, and knotted at 34 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter, it was 50-50.

    But Middle Park didn’t score again in the Class 2A contest, and Aspen sure did.

    “That is probably maxes out the highest score that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Peshek, who is now in his third season as Aspen’s starting quarterback. “We run a tempo-style offense, it’s all about tempo, and it gets to the point where it just wears the defense down, to the point where they’re not ready when we’re snapping the ball.”

    4A: (7) Fruita Monument 36, Montrose 35

    The Wildcats and coach Todd Casebier avenged this loss from a season ago. Casebier spent 10 seasons as the coach at Montrose.

    This game was a back-and-forth affair. It featured six lead changes, and saw Fruita Monument rally from down 27-14 at the half, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

    Fruita eventually took a 28-27 lead late in the third quarter, only to see Montrose answer right back and go up 35-28.

    With 2:15 to play, the Wildcats’ Braeden Graham, a senior, scored a touchdown, and Treyton Queen converted the two-point attempt.

    Notables

    • In another crazy game, 3A No. 3 Holy Family rallied to beat 4A Mountain View 33-27. The Tigers scored the winning touchdown with 11 seconds remaining, capping a 92-yard drive, according to BoCoPreps.com. “Zero Week is like the Twilight Zone,” Holy Family coach Mike Gabriel told the paper afterward.
    • No. 7 Sterling ran away from No. 6 Resurrection Christian 33-8 in a 2A top-10 clash. Isaac Harris had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in helping the Tigers win.
    • Alamosa beat Florence 43-0, and Katy Gallegos was 5-for-6 on her extra points. The senior also plays for the school’s girls soccer team. “We were really happy for Katy, she did an awesome job,” Alamosa coach Dillon McNamee told KSPK afterward. “I think every kick was a little more powerful, and little straighter. We love having a sister on our team, and it’s girl power, absolutely.”
    • 5A No. 1 Valor Christian rallied to beat out-of-state foe Faith Lutheran from Nevada 30-21. The turning point was a crazy option pitch from Luke McCaffrey to Joshia Davis which tied the game at 21. The Eagles added a safety shortly thereafter.
    • 1A No. 2 Meeker rolled to a 40-0 win over Highland. The Cowboys used 26 second-quarter points to grab a 34-0 lead at halftime.
    • In 8-man, No. 2 Akron beat Granada for the second-straight season. This one came by a 46-14 score.
    • 3A No. 8 Palisade beat Grand Junction Central 20-14 in overtime. It marked the first time the two teams had battled for their new rivalry hardware: The WarDog Trophy.

  • Baseball rankings: Silver Creek moves up to No. 2 in 4A

    Silver Creek is making the right moves at the right time. The Raptors have climbed to the No. 2 spot in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings. 

    They sit right behind Valor Christian, who holds on to the No. 1 spot.

    Green Mountain also shot up the rankings, gaining three spots to take over the No. 3 position.

    Air Academy (No. 7) and Palisade (No. 9) are the two new teams to crack the 4A poll this week.

    Three new teams made their way in the 5A rankings as Legend (No. 6), Legacy (No. 8) and Brighton (No. 10) have all impressed voters enough with the postseason right around the corner. 

    Cherry Creek remains the No. 1 team in 5A, but Mountain Vista jumped up to the No. 2 spot. Mountain Range is two spots better than a week ago, sitting at No. 4.

    Lamar holds on to the No. 1 spot in 3A with Lutheran climbing up to No. 2.

    Valley made a three-spot jump to come in at No. 4.

    At No. 9 and No. 10 respectively, Delta and Resurrection Christian are the two newcomers to the 3A poll.

    Paonia maintained its spot atop the 2A poll while Sedgwick County jumped a spot to get to No. 3.

    At No. 8, Hotchkiss is two spots better than last week.

    Front Range Christian joins the 2A poll at No. 10.

    Holly remains the unanimous No. 1 team in 1A. Eads was able to jump a spot to No. 2, trading places with No. 3 Fleming. 

    Kiowa jumped two spots to No. 8 while Granada (No. 9) and Manzanola (No. 10) join the rankings this week.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

    During the regular season, new polls are released each Monday.

  • Baseball rankings: Cheyenne Mountain takes over top spot in Class 4A

    It might be too early to say that Cheyenne Mountain is back at a championship level, but a 11-0 start to the season has certainly gotten the attention of voters across the state.

    Fresh off a win over Falcon on Thursday and Canon City on Saturday, the Indians are the new No. 1 in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

    The Indians only broke into the poll a week ago and after leaping over Northridge, Windsor and Ponderosa, they are looking closer and closer to being in championship contention once again.

    Valor Christian made a decent jump this week, gaining three spots to land No. 4. 

    Silver Creek is the only team to join the poll, coming in at No. 9

    Lamar regains the top spot in the 3A poll after being overtaken by league rival La Junta last week. 

    University gains some ground to come in at No. 3 as does Manitou Springs who jumps a spot to land at No. 5.

    Eaton rejoins the top 10 this week, rounding out the 3A at No. 10.

    In 5A, Rock Canyon holds on to the top spot in the poll. Mountain Range, however, made a four-spot jump to come in at No. 2.

    Cherry Creek gets back into the top three, getting a few first-place votes in the process.

    Fruita Monument (No. 8) and Legacy (No. 9) are the two newcomers to the 5A rankings.

    Paonia held on to the top spot in the 2A poll, as did the top four overall teams from last week’s rankings.

    Rocky Ford is two spots better this week at No. 7.

    Lyons is the only new team in the 2A poll, coming at No. 9 this week.

  • Baseball rankings: Longmont, Lamar new No. 1 teams

    A couple of wins over Mountain View has put the spotlight on Longmont baseball. The undefeated Trojans head into spring break as the new No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

    And they earned it. 

    On consecutive days last week, Longmont posted 6-3 and 3-1 wins over then No. 2 Mountain View, who fell to No. 7 this week.

    Valor Christian slipped one spot to come in at No. 2.

    Evergreen bettered their position by three spots to land at No. 5 while Silver Creek jump two spots to take over at No. 8.

    No new teams broke into the 4A poll this week.

    The 3A poll also saw a fresh face in the top spot. After coming away with a couple of wins at their own tournament, Lamar lands at the No. 1 spot formerly held by Faith Christian. 

    The defending 3A champs only dropped one spot to No. 2.

    Lutheran stormed its way into the 3A rankings, coming in at No. 4 despite not ranked in last week’s poll. The Lions are the only newcomers in 3A.

    Colorado Academy is right behind at No. 5, two spots better than a week ago.

    In 5A, Rocky Mountain hangs onto its top spot, but the always dangerous Cherry Creek Bruins jumped two spots to take over at No 2.

    Legend breaks into the top five by making a three-spot jump from last week’s poll.

    At No. 10, Broomfield is the only new team in the 5A poll.

    Haxtun has shown it should be a team to keep an eye on, landing at No. 3 in this week’s 2A poll. That’s a staggering six spots better than a week ago.

    Paonia is still securely in the No. 1 spot in those rankings.

    Calhan and Holyoke are the two new teams to break into the 2A rankings, coming in at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

    Only one new face made an appearance in this week’s 1A poll as Cotopaxi takes the No. 8 spot this week.

    Holly remains the top team in the 1A rankings and it was Dove Creek who made the big jump of the week to land three spots better at No. 7.

  • Baseball rankings: Big shakeup in 5A poll; Rocky Mountain new No. 1

    Rocky Mountain baseball sits atop the Class 5A baseball rankings, but the Lobos have yet to play a game.

    Rocky Mountain came into the season ranked third in the CHSAANow.com 5A baseball preseason rankings.

    Rock Canyon received four first-place votes after a 5-0 start that launched the Jaguars into the No. 3 slot  — up from No. 7.

    Mountain Vista, Legend and Heritage are new additions to the 5A poll. The teams come in at Nos. 6, 8 and 10, respectively.

    Regis Jesuit was the only other team to move up as the Raiders moved from No. 6 to No. 5.

    Cherokee Trail dropped to No. 2, Cherry Creek dropped to No. 4 and Ralston Valley fell to No. 7.

    ThunderRidge held at No. 9.

    In 3A, defending champion Faith Christian claimed the top spot. Close behind are Lamar, University and La Junta.

    Manitou Springs jumped from No. 7 to No. 5.

    Colorado Academy and Peak to Peak joined the rankings at No. 7 and No. 9, respectively.

    Valor Christian held firm at No. 1 in 4A. The top three teams stayed the same.

    Air Academy benefited from a 2-0 start to move into the No. 5 spot, while No. 8 Evergreen joined the mix.

    Silver Creek slid down to No. 10.

    Three teams joined the 2A poll this week, the biggest jump coming from Front Range Christian. The Falcons went from unranked to No. 2.

    Along with Front Range Christian, Haxtun and Peyton joined the 2A rankings.

    Paonia stayed at the top spot.

    There was little change in the 1A poll as Holly and Eads stayed in the top two spots

    Sierra Grande joined the poll while Cornerstone Christian dropped out.

    The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

  • Baseball rankings: Three defending champions among preseason No. 1 teams

    Three defending state baseball champions are starting the season right where they left off. In the initial CHSAANow.com baseball rankings, Cherokee Trail, Valor Christian and Holly come in at No. 1 in their respective classes.

    Cherokee Trail beat Rocky Mountain for the Class 5A championship, Valor won two-straight games to beat Pueblo West for the 4A title and Holly claimed the 1A crown from Fleming.

    The Cougars claim the top spot of the 5A rankings with six first-place votes. Centennial League foe, Cherry Creek, sits right behind them at No. 2. The Bruins are looking to end a four-year championship drought in 2017.

    Last year’s runner-up, Rocky Mountain, starts the season at No. 3.

    Outside of the top three teams, only Rock Canyon (No. 7) and Pine Creek (No. 10) received first-place votes to start the season.

    In 4A, Valor Christian, led by new coach Brian Bonn, claimed nine first-place votes to start the season with No. 3 Pueblo West being the only other ranked team to receive one.

    Mountain View will start the year at No. 2 with Windsor and Longmont rounding out the top five.

    Erie takes the No. 8 spot, meaning that the final four teams that remained in the 4A state tournament on the final weekend will come into the season ranked and carrying high expectations.

    University will start the season as the No. 1 team in 3A. The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals last year before losing 3-2 to Manitou Springs, who finished as the state runner-up.

    The Mustangs enter the season at No. 7.

    Delta, a 4A team a year ago, sits right behind Manitou at No. 8. Defending champion, Fatih Christian sits high in the rankings at No. 2 as they hope to defend their title.

    Paonia enters the season as the No. 1 team in 2A. It’s the same seed the Eagles took into last year’s state tournament where they were upset by Limon in the semifinals.

    The Badgers lost in the state championship game, but will enter the season with the No. 6 ranking.

    Defending champ, Dawson will start the season at No. 2.

    Sedgwick County took enough votes to claim the No. 4 spot to start the year. 

    Like Paonia, the Cougars went into last year’s state tournament with a high seed, only to be shocked in the semifinals.

    Holly was the only team in the preseason rankings to grab a unanimous No.1 ranking as the Wildcats took all nine first-place votes.

    State runner-up, Fleming, enters the season at No. 3 with Eads sliding into the No. 2 spot.

    Dove Creek starts the season at No. 7 after reaching the semifinal game last spring. They upset Granada in the first round of the tournament.

    Granada was the No. 1 seed in the bracket this year, but will start the 2017 season with the No. 5 ranking.

  • All-state football teams for 2016 season

    The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • La Junta, Meeker, Sedgwick County earn tops seeds in football playoffs

    AURORA — Three more classifications of football seeded their brackets on Sunday, and La Junta, Meeker and Sedgwick County each earned No. 1 seeds.

    The brackets in Class 2A, 1A and 8-man are now out. Find them here:

    Each of the three classes begin the playoffs this coming weekend. The quarterfinals are Nov. 10-12, the semifinals are Nov. 17-19, and the championship game will be Nov. 26. All games will be at home sites.

    The fields were set with help from the final RPI standings. Committees then seeded the fields.

    La Junta heads the 2A field. The Tigers are unbeaten at 9-0, including wins over five 2A playoff teams. They will open by hosting No. 16 University.

    Also seeded highly are No. 2 Resurrection Christian, No. 3 The Classical Academy, No. 4 Sterling, No. 5 Bayfield, No. 6 Kent Denver, No. 7 Faith Christian and No. 8 Basalt.

    Bayfield is the defending 2A champion.

    In 1A, Meeker (9-0) is also unbeaten as the No. 1 seed. The Cowboys will host No. 16 Ellicott in the first round.

    Other top seeds in 1A include, No. 2 Strasburg, No. 3 Paonia, No. 4 Bennett, No. 5 Peyton, No. 6 Burlington, No. 7 Crowley County, No. 8 Monte Vista.

    Defending champion Buena Vista is seeded 14th.

    Sedgwick County (8-1) leads the 8-man field. The defending champion Cougars’ lone loss came to Perkins County (Neb.), and they will host No. 16 McClave in the first round.

    Also seedly highly are No. 2 Sargent, No. 3 Akron, No. 4 Hoehne, No. 5 Norwood, No. 6 Pikes Peak Christian, No. 7 West Grand and No. 8 Granada.
