  • Boys golf regional roundup: Heritage wins at Colorado Springs Country Club

Heritage’s Sam Blackwood (left) claimed a regional championship on Monday. (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story originally had Sam Blackwood as the sole winner, but scores were recalculated after the on-site reporter left the course. The story has been changed to reflect the accurate result.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Sam Blackwood and Canon Olkowski played well down the stretch and as a result are co-regional champions.

They both shot a one-under-par 70, one stroke better than teammate Blackwood’s teammate Ben Carrington, to take the Class 5A southern regional boys golf championship on Monday.

“My game was more steady,” Blackwood said of his play on the final nine holes. “My ball striking was a lot more inconsistent on the front nine. I found my swing on the back nine and that really helped.”

His birdie on his 18th hole proved to be timely as Olkowski sank a nearly 20-foot birdie putt to get to get to one-under as well.

Heritage also took the team win with Grand Junction finishing second. Both teams have qualified for the 2017 5A state tournament at CommonGround.

The top two teams in each region, along with the next 13 individual qualifiers, will head to state next month.

Complete results for each regional tournament can be found here.

3A 1: Defending champ Oliver Jack cruises.

Oliver Jack, the reigning state champion in Class 3A, cruised to a win in 3A’s Region 1 at East to Links.

Jack shot a 2-under 69. His round included five birdies, including his final two holes.

Jack’s teammate, Jackson Klutznick, tied for second with Lance Peters of Alamosa at 1-over. Klutznick tied for fourth at state last season.

Kent Denver also won the team title, shooting 1-over. Lutheran (+24) was the second-place team, and also qualified for state.

    [divider]

4A 1: Defending champ Luke Trujillo also cruises.

Discovery Canyon’s Luke Trujillo won 4A Region 1 at Elmwood by eight strokes, shooting a 5-under 65. Trujillo won the 4A championship last fall.

Niwot’s Jack Hoover placed second at 3-over, while Falcon’s Ryan Welsh was third (+5).

Discovery Canyon easily won the regional title as a team at +11. Niwot (+33) also qualified as a team.

    4A 4: Montrose’s Stangebye wins in playoff.

    (Tom Hoganson)

Montrose golfer Micah Stangebye won a playoff to win 4A’s Region 4, held at The Bridges at Black Canyon.

Stangebye and Bridger Tenney of Evergreen were tied at even par after the round, but Stangebye won on the second playoff hole.

Montrose’s Dawson Hussong (+1) finished third.

    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Cherry Creek edged out Legend to claim the top overall seed in 5A. The Bruins (14-5) got back on track after a two-game skid just in time for the state tournament.

No. 2 Legend will host Region 5 which includes No. 31 Pomona, No. 19 Grand Junction Central and No. 18 Fairview.

Last year’s runner-up Rocky Mountain comes in at No. 4. The Lobos won’t be seeing the team that won the title over them as defending champion Cherokee Trail did not make the postseason.

No. 3 Mountain Vista will play host in Region 7.

No. 5 Rock Canyon gets Grandview in the first round in Region 4. No. 12 Heritage and No. 21 Grand Junction are on the other side of the bracket.

Mountain Range grabbed the No. 6 spot and will host Region 8.

No. 7 Regis Jesuit and No. 10 Broomfield are set up for a potential matchup in Region 6 if they can get past No. 26 Loveland and No. 23 Arapahoe, respectively.

Legacy is the final regional host at No. 8.

Denver North is on top in 4A after capping an undefeated regular season. The Vikings went 18-1 in the regular season last year, before losing to Niwot in district play.

The Vikings are out to learn from last year’s failure and turn it into success this year.

Defending champion Valor Christian and runner-up Pueblo West will both host. The No. 3 Eagles will host Region 7, while the No. 6 Cyclones will host Region 8.

No. 2 Windsor (17-2) is the Region 5 host. Also in the bracket are No. 31 Wheat Ridge, No. 15 Summit and No. 18 Thomas Jefferson.

Evergreen, Fort Morgan and Pueblo East will be making the trek out to No. 4 Palisade as the Bulldogs earned a host spot.

Air Academy came in at No. 5 and will face Rifle in its first round matchup.

No. 7 Silver Creek and No. 8 Canon City make up the rest of the regional hosts.

The Mustangs are in Region 5, hosted by Lutheran — the No. 2 overall seed.

No. 3 University will host Region 7 that includes defending champion Faith Christian and The Academy. The Bulldogs will face Kent Denver in the first game.

La Junta and Peak to Peak are the No. 4 and 5 seed, respectively.

Delta came in at No. 6, earning a Region 4 host. The Panthers are on an 11-game win streak.
