ThunderRidge is the preseason No. 1 in 5A. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Defending champions lead CHSAANow.com’s preseason baseball rankings in four of the five classifications heading into the 2014 season.

Those No. 1 teams: ThunderRidge (5A), Mountain View (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Denver Christian (2A). Stratton (1A) is the lone preseason No. 1 to not win a title last season; defending champ Fleming opens at No. 5.

ThunderRidge received 11 of the the 17 first-place votes in the 5A poll, and topped the ranking with 154 overall points. The Grizzlies return a number of key pieces, including shortstop Brody Westmoreland, pitcher/outfielder AJ Jones, pitcher/outfielder Tyler Loptien and infielder Josh Brown.

Regis Jesuit got three first-place votes, and is No. 2. Rocky Mountain is No. 3, Cherry Creek is No. 4 and Grandview rounds out the top five.

Holy Family leads the 3A poll and is followed by No. 2 Eaton, No. 3 Faith Christian, No. 4 Lamar and No. 5 Brush.

In 2A, Denver Christian leads the way. Resurrection Christian is second, and is followed by Lutheran, Las Animas and Paonia.

Stratton is on top of the preseason 1A poll. No. 2 Caliche, No. 3 Elbert, No. 4 Eads and No. 5 Fleming compile the top five.

  • 3A wrestling’s 120-pound state final should be epic

DENVER — Whoever wins the Class 3A 120-pound championship Saturday night at Pepsi Center will add to an already impressive resume.

Olathe senior Trenton Piatt is undefeated on the season with a 34-0 record. Piatt’s opponent in Saturday night’s championship bout will be Brush junior Conrad Cole, who won the 113-pound title in 2013 and took third at 106 as a freshman.

“(Piatt) is a good opponent. He is undefeated for a reason. It’s going to be a battle all the way through,” said Cole, who used a late third-period pin to end his close semifinal match Friday night against Cedaredge sophomore Austin Todd. “It might be one of the best (finals) in the whole state tournament.”

The parade of champions is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Pepsi Center with the finals in all four classifications to follow.

Cole and Piatt have never faced each other. While Cole came in as a defending state champion, Piatt was the top seed with his undefeated record.

“You are always nervous coming into state,” Piatt said after pinning Lamar sophomore Michael Johnson in the second period of his semifinal. “The atmosphere is just crazy.”

Cole already has something Piatt wants, a state title. Piatt came up just short on his previous three trips downtown. As a freshman he took third at 103. He was a state runner-up at 113 in 2012 and placed fourth at 120 last year.

Piatt has cruised to three pins in his first three matches of the three-day tournament. A fourth pin Saturday night would finally give the senior his elusive state championship.

“The ‘W’ most of all, but if that pin happens that would be nice too,” Piatt said. “I’m just looking for the win.”

Monte Vista senior Diondre Garcia will also attempt to end his prep career on the top of the podium for a second straight year. Garcia dominated Fort Lupton freshman Jody Sandoval with a 15-5 major decision in the semifinals at 106.

“I’ll try not to think about it,” Garcia said when asked if it was hitting him that his high school wrestling season is nearly over. “I’ll focus on tomorrow’s big match. I’ll let that all come after the final.”

Garcia has been a staple at 106 pounds in 3A all four years. He won his first state title last year after being a state runner-up in 2012 and placing sixth in 2011.

“I feel like I have a lot of experience over these kids,” Garcia said. “I feel like the big dog here.”

Garcia will square off against Alamosa freshman Isaiah DeLaCerda in the final. The senior has defeated the freshman twice already this season, but their second battle went overtime.

After losing in state final as a sophomore Garcia decided to focus on wrestling so he could train year round. He believes that was a turning point in becoming a state champion.

Holy Family will attempt to make school history tomorrow. The school has never had a state-wrestling champion. Twin brothers Julian and Joseph Prieto are both in the final. Joseph became the first Holy Family wrestler to make a final last year, but lost his match at 126.

Julian will wrestle Dolores Huerta senior Jared Mestas in the 132 final. Joseph will face Valley senior Omar Sotelo at 138.

“It’s going to be fun,” Joseph said. “It’s going to be nice to have someone there with you that you know.”

Joseph took a glance over at his younger brother – by a minute – before starting his semifinal match Friday. Joseph pinned Monte Vista junior Jacob Vance at the 1:30 mark in the first period.

Moments later, Julian pinned Olathe junior Austin Shank midway through the third period to join his brother in the championship matches.

Before Saturday’s championships matches, it will be a busy day for those wrestlers working their way through the consolation brackets at Pepsi Center.

The third round of consolations will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The fifth- and third-place matches begin at 2 p.m. for both the 3A and 2A classifications.

Valley is closing in on its first team wrestling title in the school’s history. The Vikings have a healthy lead with 124 points going into the final day. Centauri is second with 105 points. Monte Vista holds third with 90.5 and Brush is fourth with 87.

Valley takes five wrestlers into the finals, including sophomore Macoy Flanagan who scored the biggest upset in the 3A semifinals. Flanagan upset defending state champion Andrew Register of The Classical Academy with a 3-1 overtime victory at 145.

  • Mestas focused coming into final 3A state wrestling tourney

DENVER — Last year’s Class 3A state wrestling tournament is in the past for Dolores Huerta senior Jared Mestas.

“It’s just a totally a new year. Leave it in the past. What happened, happened,” Mestas said after a second-period pin of The Classical Academy junior Charles Baker in the opening round Thursday at Pepsi Center in the 132-pound bracket. “I’ve got to focus on what I need to do the next few days.”

What happened last state tournament is something Mestas has clearly learned from and now has in the rear-view mirror.

“I’ve been training and working hard for this moment,” Mestas said. “Working hard on my grades too. You can’t wrestle without grades. You can’t go to college without grades.”

After claiming the 3A 126-pound state title as a sophomore in 2012, Mestas came to Pepsi Center last year as the top seed at 138. However, an unexpected loss in the quarterfinals to Hotchkiss senior Jesse Head ended his dream of becoming a two-time state champion. Mestas had to settle for fourth place in 2013.

Mestas has changed his approach this season after failing to repeat. He has friends film every match he wrestles and go over them frame-by-frame to learn from his mistakes. Having a good mental preparation is a key for Mestas to win his second state title in his final shot.

“I’ve got to keep my mind focused on what I need to do,” Mestas said.

There are seven wrestlers in 3A who are attempting to stake claim to a second state title. All had no problem getting through to the quarterfinals that begin 10 a.m. Friday morning.

One of those looking to return to the top of the podium is Centauri senior Jason Buhr. The four-time state qualifier has run the entire scale of emotions during his previous three state appearances.

Buhr placed sixth as a freshman at 135. Had to settle for runner-up at 145 as a sophomore before joining the ranks as a state champion last year winning at 152 in 3A.

“A little more pressure,” Buhr said of being a defending state champion. “I just want to repeat for sure.”

Buhr enters his final trip to state as top seed at 152. He scored a 17-2 technical fall over Faith Christian senior Clark Kelly in his opening match Thursday.

Buhr’s teammate, senior Jereb Aziz, is one of only two undefeated 3A wrestlers entering the state tournament. Aziz improved his unblemished record to 45-0 with a pin in 59 seconds against The Classical Academy sophomore Will Campos in the opening round at 195.

“I just push myself. I really don’t care what record I have,” said Aziz, who won the 182 title last year. “It’s 0-0 now. I just go hard as soon as I step on the mat.”

Olathe senior Trenton Piatt (32-0 record) is the other undefeated 3A wrestler. Piatt pinned his first-round opponent in 33 seconds.

In the team race, the goal is to see who can dethrone three-time defending state champion Alamosa. After the opening round Lamar (29 points), Valley (27 points) and Centauri (26.5) put themselves in good position.

Valley senior Jackson Wright comes in as the top seed at 170 with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Wright lost in the semifinals at 152 before taking third.

“It’s been a long time,” Wright said of waiting for state. “This tournament for me, besides being my last, is pretty much to avenge that loss.”

Wright, along with teammates Ruben Lucero (126), Omar Sotelo (138), Macoy Flanagan (145), Zac Miller (152) and Brendan Gonzales (160) spearheads a strong Valley Vikings contingent that is favored to win the 3A team title.

“It’s been in the back of our heads,” Wright said about going in as the favorite. “What we can do as individuals will give us our team points.”

  • 5A girls basketball ranking adds Mountain Vista at No. 9

    Mountain Vista girls basketball
Mountain Vista joined this week’s girls basketball ranking in 5A. (Taylor Blatchford/Mountain Vista Journalism)

Mountain Vista has joined this week’s CHSAANow.com girls basketball ranking in 5A.

The Golden Eagles, who have won 11 straight games, toppled then-No. 6 Rock Canyon as part of a 3-0 week last week. They are now ranked No. 9.

Aside from Rock Canyon, ranked teams in 5A went 20-0 last week. Regis Jesuit held on to the top spot in that poll.

However, there is a new team in the 2A poll, where Lutheran takes over for Yuma. The Lions moved up from No. 2 after Yuma lost to then-No. 4 Akron on Saturday. Lutheran also went 2-0 last week.

Akron moved up to No. 2 this week, while Yuma dropped to No. 4. Heritage Christian was the lone newcomer in 2A, joining at No. 10.

The other No. 1 teams stayed put. Those are Valor Christian (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Caliche (1A).

The 3A poll added No. 10 Brush, while 1A added No. 7 Briggsdale and No. 9 South Baca.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.
