  • Ball Fever: A final look back at the 5A and 4A boys basketball season

    Rangeview Chaparral boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Has everyone caught their breath?!!! What a tournament in both 5A and 4A the Denver Coliseum treated us to.

Yes, the Coliseum has its detractors as a Final 4 facility but the energy, excitement, and the joy of the players/coaches performing on that stage cannot be denied!

We took a little heat for what the Fever Crew called the “sexy matchups” that a lot of hoops fan wanted to see in Chap/Rangeview and Longmont/Lewis Palmer. No surprise, dedicated fans should pull for their squad and not want to hear that but as the Crew says: The Cream Will Rise and it did just that in these exciting finales…let’s take a look!

A look back at the live coverage of EVERY championship game here.

    [divider]

    5A Championship

    Rangeview Chaparral boys basketball
    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Our Dan Mohrmann was the man on the scene to catch the immediate aftermath of Rangeview’s first title in 34 years!

Our guy, “Coach K” of Keyser Images, caught the “one shining moment” photos of the Raiders championship.

With the Final 4 game and Championship game being 24 hours apart, there was some discussion on press row about which team had the depth to survive to taxing games in that short amount of time and quick turnaround?

The answer became clear as the Raiders attacked early and often vs. Mountain Vista and Chaparral. Obviously Vista and Chap were talented squads but the depth, overall length, and athleticism of the Raiders proved to be more than enough as they won both games by double digits.

Having some surprise players step up on our states biggest stage doesn’t hurt either as Obi Agbim, who averaged 6 points per game for the season, went a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc for 13 points in the title game giving the Raiders a huge boost off the bench. And what about Christopher Speller?!! How about 38 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots in the 24 hoursperiod of Final 4 and championship game! Speller also went 15-18 from the free throw line to seal the title for the Raiders.

    4A Championship

    Longmont Lewis-Palmer boys basketball
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

“Digital Dan” Mohrmann on it again with the fresh report of Lewis-Palmer’s “Dream of Perfection”

Jack “Action Shots” Eberhard throws elbows on press row and takes some nice action pics too! Here’s your 4A title shots.

Speaking of dominant performances and perfection the Fever Crew was thoroughly impressed with Noah Baca who was a perfect 8-of-8 vs. Holy Family from the field, scoring 20 points and game’s leading scorer in semifinal.

Surviving a 24-hour turnaround was crucial in 4A as well and in our eyes they have a 5A starting lineup. Not saying the entire squad would survive a full season of 5A ball but there are no doubts Baca, Ragsdale, Forrester, McCullough, and Joel Scott could toss the ball up with just about any other starting 5 in the state.

Tre McCullough brought energy and dunks, Forrester is very smooth around the basket, and Ragsdale was the leading scorer of the title game with 23 and game clinching free throws.

And Joel Scott? He’s special, a different kind of physical dude. When the game was in doubt or got tight there was no denying him in getting to the rack!

In two back-to-back days Scott gave the Rangers: 32 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots, flat out getting it done on both sides of the floor.

    Final thoughts on the season

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Another great season we were treated to by our “awesome athletes” and dedicated coaching staffs. RPI, “sexy match-ups”, our home-town favorite…throw it all out the window and “lace em up” come tournament time and believe that the cream will rise!

It certainly did in our 5A/4A big school ball this year. Congrats Rangeview and Lewis-Palmer for magical seasons and endings.

In our “Waaaaaaaaaaay too early” look ahead: 5A Rangeview returns almost everyone and will again be a beast to deal with (EMAC doesn’t matter when it comes to this crew of players…they’re battle tested). In 4A keep an eye out for Mead, who has a group of current juniors who will be ready to lead and heard from a year from now.

For now, it’s off to the club ball scene and time to get it in! Couldn’t do this without the support of the “Digital Media Guru” Ryan Casey, CHSAANow staff, and our supportive readers.

Enjoy the off season, folks! Peace.

  • Rangeview beats Chaparral for first boys basketball title in 34 years

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — It’s hard for the Rangeview players to remember the school’s last boys basketball title. Probably because none of them were alive when it happened.

That’s no longer the case as the Raiders beat Chaparral 61-47 to win the Class 5A boys basketball championship.

It’s the first state title for the Raiders since 1985.

They wasted no time in jumping out to a lead, going up 13-7 after the first quarter. And getting the early lead was something that coach Shawn Palmer was pleased to see.

“It was really important. We did a good job last night of getting off to a good start early offensively. We really set the tone defensively. We got stops early and I thought we missed some opportunities in transition but then Obi Agbim came off the bench and just caught fire.”

Agbim hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter to keep Rangeview ahead. But the Raiders (26-2) were far from comfortable up seven after two. They couldn’t help but think back 24 hours when the Wolverines (23-5) were trailing ThunderRidge but clamped down defensively in the second half.

“We always start the third quarter off pretty slow,” Agbim said. “This championship game we had to set the tone to have our best game of the season. We wanted started the third quarter as strong as we possibly could.”

A 9-2 run put them up 14 midway through the third quarter and Chap kept struggling to make baskets. Kobe Sanders made his first field goal with less than two minutes left in the third quarter and Matthews picked up his fourth foul shortly after. Still, the ability of Chap to change the game with defensive pressure made Palmer uneasy.

“We talked about ThunderRidge’s 25 turnovers in the second half,” he said. “We expected to see some different things, but I trust my guards so much.”

Sanders found his stroke in the fourth quarter, but every time he got the Wolverines close, Christopher Speller found a way to keep the Raiders ahead. He had four points going into the fourth quarter but finished with a team-high 17.

“He made his free throws,” Palmer pointed out.

“I just didn’t want to lose,” Speller said. “When he was hitting those 3-pointers, I knew we had to keep the momentum up and keep up our pace.”

But it was a timely performance from the Rangeview junior guard. Since he arrived in the Raiders program, his quest has been to raise another state championship banner for the school. With trophy in hand, it was hard for him to process the feat that he and his teammates accomplished in front of thousands of fans at the Denver Coliseum.

“I feel amazing,” Speller said. “I’m just happy we got the job done. I’ve been waiting for this since I was a freshman. I’m glad we finally got the win. We got it for Aurora and we got it for our school.”

And it was no easy task. The Wolverines had been ranked at or near the top of the CHSAANow.com basketball rankings all year. They looked impressive in wins over Smoky Hill and ThunderRidge early in the year. They beat Mountain Vista when the Golden Eagles were considered the top team in the state.

And through the season, they averaged scoring 64 points per game. But the Raiders held them to 47, the lowest scoring game of the year for Chap.

That wasn’t the ultimate goal though. They didn’t care how many points they surrendered as long as they scored even one more than the Wolverines. It harps back to the conversation that Palmer had with his boys about the state championship.

Thirty-four years is a long time and it’s something the Raiders have openly discussed with each other.

“We have,” Speller said. “We wanted to change that.”

They got their wish. And they got their banner. And the championship drought for Rangeview is over.

    Chaparral vs. ThunderRidge

    (Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

It’s been said many times that it’s hard to beat the same team three times in a season. And that’s exactly what Chaparral is hoping to do when it faces ThunderRidge on a neutral court this time.

Chaparral beat a very game Cherry Creek squad 67-62 in the Great 8 to reach this point. Big man Bryce Matthews did a lot of damage inside scoring 20 points while on the perimeter Kobe Sanders and Tanner Giles combined for 23. Tyzelle Lewis took on the challenge of guarding “super soph” Julian Hammond and disturbed him first half until Hammond started to find some rhythm second half finishing with 21 and his running mate Myles Purchase scored 18 in the loss.

16-0 start? I don’t think anyone in the Coliseum expected the start ThunderRidge had in absolutely shocking Overland with that start to the first stage. The quarter ended up 20-5 and this game was never really in question as the Grizz shot 48 percent from the field, a hot 6-8 from 3-point land, and 85 percent from free throw line en route to 73-49 convincing win.

Senior Bailey Verk led four Grizzlies in double figure scoring with 18 and scored in a variety of ways. Young soph Garrett Arnold was dishing the rock to the double digit scorers as he piled up 6 assists with only 1 turnover. Big Graham Ike was the bright spot for Overland on a down day with 15 points and nine rebounds.

As previously mentioned, Chap and ThunderRidge have played each other twice this season and the Wolverines are 2-0, winning both of the previous match ups by double digits. The Grizzlies’ leading scorer Austin Holt at 12 points per game will need to lead the way and have at least two others to join him in double figure scoring in this one.

Kobe Sanders will look to stay out of early foul trouble so he can find his rhythm early for Chap to have success.

It will be a battle inside with the Grizzlies overall size vs. Chap’s horses who will look to push the pace.

Tizell Lewis will be licking his chops to again be a defensive “secret weapon” for Chap and he will need to be allowed to play his defensive style for Chap to take down T-Ridge for the third time.

    Mountain Vista vs. Rangeview

Two teams that have been doubted throughout the season:

Mountain Vista didn’t step up in their big games against Chap and Regis.

Rangeview’s league play and lack of competition will hurt them come playoff time.

These are criticisms these two teams are fully aware of and ready to blast the myths!

Speaking of blasting myths, how about Mountain Vista taking that “no one can shoot in the Coliseum” belief and making it look silly this night. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field and needed every bit of it as Kenny Foster scored 30 for Smoky Hill and had Vista faithful just a little nervous as things got tight in the end.

But Ben Grusing was the picture of consistency for Vista scoring 20 points and was 10-12 from the free throw line. Vista was 75 percent from the line as a team which was crucial down the stretch.

We knew plenty about Chap, Vista was hot, and ThunderRidge left looking like a totally different squad from the regular season, but many on press row stated they were most impressed with the overall team play and attack of Rangeview.

The Raiders have a laundry list of capable athletes and defending champ Grandview was missing one of theirs in injured junior Caleb McGill. That certainly didn’t help the Wolves, who with McGill is one of the few teams in the state whose roster you could look at and say, “yep, this stacks up nicely.”

The Raiders are aggressive in attacking the rim but also have a young man, Cade Palmer, who can stretch the floor! He only shot twice on the night but where he shot the DEEP 3s from is what forced Grandview to extend their defense and create lanes for Raiders slashers.

Quincy Jewett led the scoring for Rangeview with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in the impressive 10-point win. Never easy to take out the defending champs!

Rangeview and Mountain Vista are both 24-2, proved they belong here, and both average almost 70 points per game. We won’t have to worry about any slowed pace with Coach Wood and Coach Palmer here!

Watch out for Quincy Jewett to have a huge impact as the Eagles have struggled with teams who have height inside. They are many “above-the-rim” Raiders as well (none more high-flying than the Speller twins), who will make the rebounding, second-chance point game interesting.

The “big 3” of Grusing, May, and Pulling will be called on heavily for the Eagles, who will likely throw multiple defensive looks at Rangeview, daring them to hit from the perimeter (not Cade Palmer though…stay glued to him!) in an attempt to keep those studs out of the paint.

Is there such thing as a fast paced chess match? Can’t wait!

    4A Final 4 Preview

    Lewis Palmer vs. Holy Family

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Holy Family has only lost four games on the season but one of those losses was to the No. 1 overall seed by 17 points back in December. Holy Family obviously has played strong ball since that Dec. 1 loss.

Arguably there’s no better team or “hot” squad than 26-0 Lewis Palmer, who isn’t only undefeated but also have a home win over the 5A No. 1 seed on their resume, as well.

Lewis-Palmer won their Great 8 game by more than 30 over Centaurus while Holy Family won by 11 in a revenge game over Mead, who was rolling before their loss to HF.

Joel Scott and the Rangers are no strangers to the Coliseum where he’ll bring his 19-point-per-game average.

The mid-range attack of Tanner Baird’s 16 points per game is what leads the Tigers. Holy Family hangs its hat on defense but allowed 60 to LP in their December match.

Tre McCullough and Noah Baca both scored 12 as Scott led with 21 in the first tilt. Matt Ragsdale did not play the first time around, and that makes the Tigers’ defensive task even greater!

    Longmont vs. Pueblo East

    (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Lewis Palmer isn’t the sole 26-0 squad! Don’t forget unbeaten defending champ Longmont, who unlike the Rangers who haven’t blown out all contenders. The Trojans have played recent overtime games, including their tight 1-point win over game Harrison on their home court in Great 8 play.

Pueblo East comes in on a four-game winning streak and taking down No. 3 seed Steamboat and Cheyenne Mountain’s scoring machine Javonte Johsnon in Great 8.

Pueblo East has won their last two elimination games by a total of 6 points. Battle tested, as well!

Longmont averages 70 points per game and that is fueled by Brady Renck’s nearly 8 assists per game! Beck Page is the recipient of many of those assists averaging 14 points per match for the Trojans.

Pueblo East is powered by Kain Medrano’s 12 points per game and Joe Padula’s 8 rebounds each night out.

Pueblo East will bring their blue collar, defensive mentality to the Coliseum to see if they can dethrone the champs!

    Final 4 Thoughts

Talking on press row we always discuss the “sexy” match up for the fans and media. Looking at it that way the Fever Crew would be ALL HYPED for a Chaparral/Rangeview final…but we also realize there is “Highlands Ranch” prideful community who would love nothing better than a ThunderRidge/Mountain Vista all “H-Ranch” final! We shall see.

In 4A you couldn’t write a better script than 27-0 vs. 27-0 Longmont/LP rematch from last year. Many feel this has been destined since one year ago and these two top seeds have certainly played that way. But something tells up Pueblo East and Holy Family are just fine with the “unbeatens” getting all the attention which they hope can lead to a sneak attack!

Friday is jam-packed with intrigue, folks. Get out and enjoy!
