  • Telluride’s Soleil Gaylord wins Wendy’s High School Heisman

Telluride senior Soleil Gaylord was named this year’s female Wendy’s High School Heisman winner on Friday.

The prestigious national award honors high school seniors who give back to their communities, treat people with respect, seek to continue their education, and excel in athletics.

Gaylord was one of five national female finalists for the award. Longmont’s Brandon Staple was one of the five male finalists. The male winner was Jackson Destine of Delray Beach, Fla.

For winning, Gaylord will receive a $10,000 college scholarship. Staple will receive a $5,000 scholarship for being a finalist.

Gaylord is the first Colorado winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman since Wiggins’ Kyle Pollock won in 2009.

Gaylord is a multi-sport athlete who competes in track and cross country, and is also the student body president at Telluride.

She is the two-time defending champion in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races at the 2A state track meet, and also finished second in the 800 last season. Gaylord was also part of Telluride’s championship-winning 4×800 relay.

Gaylord finished second at last month’s 2A state cross country championships, and was named first-team all-state earlier this week. She was fifth as a junior, third as a sophomore, and seventh as a freshman.

Outside of high school athletics, Gaylord has also competed in the World Mountain Running Championships, and is a World Champion snowshoe runner.

She is passionate about the environment. From the release announcing Gaylord as a finalist:

She presents to her town government two times a year about a native species garden that she designed and maintains on 500 acres of protected land. She also founded a program to save and rebuild Telluride’s Monarch butterfly population, and works in her school’s greenhouse to promote healthy eating and supply low-income families with fresh produce. In everything she does, Soleil passionately believes in putting in the hard work. As her long list of accomplishments shows, the rewards are well worth the effort.

Two of the ten finalists for this year’s Wendy’s High School Heisman award are seniors from Colorado high schools.

Telluride’s Soleil Gaylord is a finalist for the girls award, while Longmont’s Brandon Staple is a finalist for the boys award. Both will attend Heisman Weekend in New York City, with the winner announced on Dec. 8 during the Heisman Memorial Trophy Presentation.

The one boys and one girls will will each receive a $10,000 college scholarship, and the four finalists who do not win will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Gaylord is a multi-sport athlete who competes in track and cross country, who is also student body president at Telluride.

She is the two-time defending champion in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races at the 2A state track meet, and also finished second in the 800 last season. Gaylor was also part of Telluride’s championship-winning 4×800 relay.

In everything she does, Soleil passionately believes in putting in the hard work. As her long list of accomplishments shows, the rewards are well worth the effort.

Staple is also a multi-sport athlete, competing in soccer and track for Longmont.

In his recently-completed high school soccer career, Staple scored 29 goals and had 13 assists in 52 games played. That included a senior campaign where he led the Trojans with 15 goals.

Last season, Staple was named second-team all-state in Class 4A. This year’s all-state boys soccer teams have not yet been announced.

Outside of athletics, Staple is a leader of a variety of math and science clubs at Longmont. He plans to start the orthopedic surgery study program at Stanford after he graduates.

He’s also heavily involved and interested in solving social problems. From the press release announcing Staple as a finalist:

Brandon is committed to doing his part to solve social problems as well. Leveraging his love of technology, he came up with a plan to create an app that promotes positive police-youth engagements in his own neighborhood. He’s working to improve conditions much further from home, too. After visiting his father’s native country of Jamaica, and witnessing kids playing soccer in the streets with no shoes, Brandon started a program to provide soccer gear for underprivileged Jamaican youth. Every Christmas, he works with his soccer team and the local community to gather old uniforms, cleats, and balls. Then, Brandon ships the items to Jamaica to be distributed to those in need.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Peak to Peak set out with a lofty goal.

The Pumas finished 1-2-3 in the 3A girls cross country race to go on to win the team title, lead by junior Quinn McConnell.

“We wanted to go 1-2-3. We wanted to make a statement like that,” McConnell said. “We’ve been doing it the past few races. I’m so happy for Tiana (Bradfield) who got it done.”

McConnell entered into the stadium ahead of her teammates, turning in a time of 18:31.6. Teammates Anna Shults and Bradfield followed.

“We’ve worked hard and wanted this all season,” McConnell said. “It was something that we knew we could do. We came here and executed it today.”

Peak to Peak, with three juniors and one freshman running, took the team title with 82 points.

“We have a lot left that we haven’t shown,” McConnell said. “We have some really big goals. This is just a stepping stone, and I’m super excited for what we can do.”

Steamboat Springs (101) and Classical Academy (120) rounded out the top three teams.

Nederland’s Helen Cross sets meet record in 2A

Nederland sophomore Helen Cross didn’t expect to be on top of the podium.

Cross, a sophomore, set a cross country state meet record for Class 2A with a time of 18:52 — beating the record by 55 seconds.

“I really wanted to do that,” Cross said. “I didn’t know that was going to happen this season. I was not expecting that at all. It’s exciting.”

Cross set out to keep up with Telluride senior Soleil Gaylord on the course.

“I thought I would keep up with Soleil,” Cross said. “I was going to try to stay behind her. I didn’t really have a set plan necessarily.”

She kept up with Gaylord, and then turned it up to take the win.

Gaylord finished behind her with a time of 19:09. In third, Cross’ teammate Sarah Davidson finished at 19:29.9 to give Nederland a boost in the team race.

“Sarah, she’s been trying to break 20:00 her whole career,” Cross said. “And now, she’s a senior and she just did it.”

The Panthers won the girls team title with a score of 24. Nederland edged out Paonia (30) and Lyons (33).

Battle Mountain grabs 4A team title behind Elizabeth Constien

Battle Mountain’s Elizabeth Constien and Palmer Ridge’s Isabella Prosceno were tied, unoficially, at the second mile of the 4A girls race.

Constien found something in her to push the last stretch of the race and take the 4A girls title.

“All I had to do was want it and pull ahead,” Constien said. “I managed to go just fast enough to put a gap on me and Isabella. She really made me push. I thought she was going to catch me, and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t get in my head.

“I basically sprinted for 800 meters as fast as I could go.”

It was her sister that gave her the motivation to keep going forward and give it her all.

“My sister was here today,” Constien said. “She stood right before the corner into the woods. She just reminded me how much I wanted this.”

In her senior year, Constien captured the individual and team titles for Battle Mountain.

“I can’t even believe it,” Constien said. “I wanted this so much and I didn’t think I was going to get it. I’m so happy.”

Palmer Ridge (157) finished in second ahead of third-place Durango (165).

Mountain Vista takes 5A team title with 1-2 finish

Mountain Vista took the top two spots in the 5A girls race to take the team title.

Sophomore Jenna Fitzsimmons came in first at 18:10.3, followed by her teammate Caroline Eck.

“My legs were burning, but I kept telling myself, ‘Do it for the team. Do it for the team,’” Fitzsimmons said. “I was saying it over and over again in my head.”

Fitzsimmons and Eck embraced next to the finish line.

“It was so good to have them next to me,” Fitzsimmons said. “To all be next to eachother, I don’t think I could have finished without them there.”

Fitzsimmons made a final push after the second mile to get out ahead and cross the finish line in first place.

“One of the hardest parts was, after the two mile, knowing how close you were,” Fitzsimmons. “You had to keep going and really put in the work.”

As a result of Fitzsimmons and Eck’s strong effort, Mountain Vista swept the boys and girls team titles. The girls had a score of 64.

Broomfield (92) came in second, while Rock Canyon (164) finished in third place.

  • Cheyenne Mountain Stampede gives cross country runners a sneak peek at state venue

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Runners from all four classifications got a chance to test their race at the course the state cross country championships will be held in October.

The annual Cheyenne Mountain Stampede was all day Friday at the Norris-Penrose Event Center.

Running at the state meet venue “really helps us with our times, because you can set a mark for that state meet when you’re here,” said Rocky Ford’s Cody Danley, who finished second at state a year ago to Custer County’s Jerald Taylor. (Taylor has since graduated.)

Danley won the Class 2A boys race with a time of 17:22.6, 30 seconds faster than Telluride’s Jaden Evans, who was second. Danley’s effort also helped pace his team to a win in the 2A boys division with 12 points.

“We’ll know what to go for and try and beat and do our best to beat out there,” Danley added.

While every team didn’t attend, the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede drew a large number of teams. Still, Danley said he knows more competition is out there.

“I know there’s going to be a lot more competition at the state meet, and that’s what I’m looking for,” he said. “I like it. It helps me push.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Colorado Academy senior Anna Ponzio won the 3A girls race in 19:59.6. Alamosa’s Lilly Lavier was second in 20:40.8.

The Holy Family girls won the 3A race, led by Alyssa Wells, a freshman, who finished third in 20:52.2.

“I’ve been training really hard this summer, and I knew I wanted to get out fast,” Ponzio said. “My coaches told me to stay with the top group. I got out, and I was in the lead, and I just felt really good.

“It helped me so much mentally, because I’ve been really struggling,” she continued. “After last year’s state (meet), I really want to come out and run a great race.”

Ponzio was 15th at last year’s state meet.

St. Mary’s won the 2A girls team race, led by seniors Hannah McReavy (20:08.5) and Ana Muehlbauer (21:35.1), who placed first and second, respectively.

Lamar’s Blake Davis won the 3A boys race in 17:09.5, and Gunnison’s Colton Stice (17:20.3) took second place. Faith Christian won the team race, led by junior Macklin Brockmeyer, who was fifth with a time of 17:44.7.

In 5A girls, Legacy sophomore Brynn Siles topped the field in 18:21.9. Thornton senior Stephanie Carrasco was second in 19:29.9. Rocky Mountain won the team race, with junior Julia Schlepp placing third.

Battle Mountain was the top team in the 4A girls field, finishing with 49 points. The Huskies had five runners in the top 14, led by junior Lizzy Harding in seventh place.

Air Academy swept the top two places in that race, with sophomore Tatum Miller (19:30.1) winning and junior Paige Embaugh (19:34.9) taking second.

In 5A boys, Legend senior Landon Rast led his Titans to the team title by winning the individual race in 16:46.5. Douglas County’s Michael Long was second in 16:53.9.

In the final race of the day, Cheyenne Mountain held serve at its own invite. The school won the team race, and senior Thomas Chaston captured the individual event in 16:27.4. Air Academy junior Cal Banta (16:27.8) was second.
